Hi r/browsers, this is what you'll see in the video: I start typing a personal question into ChatGPT. Before anything is sent, the extension notices it's personal and offers "Ask Melo". One click and the question moves to Chrome's side panel, where Melo answers it with the AI that's built into Chrome (Gemini Nano, through the Prompt API). The answer is made on your own computer, and ChatGPT never gets the question.
A few things browser people might care about:
- The extension itself makes no network calls. Every build runs a test that fails if any file opens a connection of its own.
- The "is this personal?" check runs locally: a word list in five languages, plus Chrome's on-device model as a second opinion.
- It only works where Chrome's built-in AI can run (Chrome needs a GPU with more than 4 GB of VRAM or 16 GB of RAM, and 22 GB free space). On other computers it offers the site's temporary chat instead.
- Edge and Firefox don't have an equivalent on-device API I can use yet, so there it's the temporary chat only.
- Free, open source (AGPL), no account.
Honest limit: Gemini Nano is small. It's fine for talking a personal question through, not for writing your thesis, you can still use chatgpt, but when you have a personal question. Melo will help you to keep your data private.
Curious what you think, especially from Edge and Firefox users: would you want this, and what would you need to trust it?
