Recommendation Browser Recommendation Megathread - October 2026

There are constantly a zillion, repetitive "Which browser should I use?", "What browser should I use for [insert here]", "Which browser should I switch to?", "Browser X or Browser Y?", "What's your favorite browser?", "What do you think about browser X? and "What browser has feature X?" posts that are making things a mess here and making it annoying for subscribers to sort through and read other types of posts.

If you would like to keep the mess under control a little bit, instead of making a new post for questions like the above, ask in a comment in this thread instead. Then, one can choose to follow this thread if they want. Or, post in r/suggestabrowser.

Also, check out all the individual browser recommendation posts and make use of the search field for this subreddit before asking for a recommendation.

Bare Bare Browser is finally on Google Play! Open-source Chromium browser with extensions, MV2 support, and more!

Hey everyone!

We're really excited to share that Bare Browser is finally available on the Google Play Store!

For those unfamiliar with the project, Bare is a free, open-source Chromium-based browser for Android.

Our goal has always been simple: build a browser that gives users more freedom, customization, and control without unnecessary bloat or telemetry.

Here's what Bare currently offers:

  • Full Chrome extension support, including Manifest V2.
  • Install extensions directly from CRX files.
  • uBlock Origin bundled.
  • List view for open tabs.
  • Developer Tools
  • AMOLED dark mode.
  • Long-press videos or images on most social media platforms to download them directly.
  • Background video playback.
  • Support for external download managers.
  • Bitwarden integration and passkey support.
  • Bookmark import and export.
  • Option to disable websites opening external apps.
  • No telemetry, no tracking, no in-app purchases.

And quite a few other features!

Bare has already reached thousands of users on github, which is honestly incredible considering this started as a personal project.

Getting through Google Play's approval process took longer than we expected, but we're finally here! An F-Droid release is on the roadmap too!

Bare is completely free and open source, and we intend to keep it that way.

We'd love for you to give it a try and share your thoughts. What features would you like to see in Bare? What frustrates you most about existing Android browsers?

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.barebrowser

GitHub: https://github.com/BareBrowser/bare-browser

Subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/BareBrowser/

Thanks to everyone who's supported the project. There's a lot more coming!

Adblocking uBlock Origin vs AdGuard on YouTube. AdGuard is significantly better.

I'm pretty sure all of you have dealt with the fake buffering on YT when using uBlock Origin and I assumed that there was no way to prevent it. Well, turns out AdGuard is way better. It loads videos instantaneously every single time. I tested this on both Chromium and Firefox, both MV3 and MV2. In every situation AdGuard loaded videos instantly while uBO fell victim to the fake buffering. Just wanted to point this out in case people were interested.

Discussion Can Firefox and Brave users stop fighting

Firefox and Brave users are always fighting in Youtube comment sections on videos related to browsers and Reddit posts in this subreddit, it's not that serious, people can use what browser they like, both sides need to chill out.

Extension I made a Chrome extension that answers your personal AI questions with Chrome's built-in AI, so they never leave your computer

Hi r/browsers, this is what you'll see in the video: I start typing a personal question into ChatGPT. Before anything is sent, the extension notices it's personal and offers "Ask Melo". One click and the question moves to Chrome's side panel, where Melo answers it with the AI that's built into Chrome (Gemini Nano, through the Prompt API). The answer is made on your own computer, and ChatGPT never gets the question.

A few things browser people might care about:

- The extension itself makes no network calls. Every build runs a test that fails if any file opens a connection of its own.

- The "is this personal?" check runs locally: a word list in five languages, plus Chrome's on-device model as a second opinion.

- It only works where Chrome's built-in AI can run (Chrome needs a GPU with more than 4 GB of VRAM or 16 GB of RAM, and 22 GB free space). On other computers it offers the site's temporary chat instead.

- Edge and Firefox don't have an equivalent on-device API I can use yet, so there it's the temporary chat only.

- Free, open source (AGPL), no account.

Honest limit: Gemini Nano is small. It's fine for talking a personal question through, not for writing your thesis, you can still use chatgpt, but when you have a personal question. Melo will help you to keep your data private.

Curious what you think, especially from Edge and Firefox users: would you want this, and what would you need to trust it?

Can I replace Bing's AI Mode in Edge with Google Gemini?

Hey everyone!

I'm using Microsoft Edge on Windows, and there's one thing that's been bugging me.

When I search for something on Bing, I get the usual tabs like All, AI Mode, Images, Videos, Maps, and News. The problem is that when I click AI Mode, it opens Microsoft's AI instead of Google Gemini, which I'd rather use.

Is there any way to change that button so it opens Gemini instead? Maybe through an Edge extension, a redirect, or some other workaround?

I know I can just open Gemini in another tab or switch my default search engine, but I'd prefer to keep my usual workflow without having to do that every time.

And yes, I'm a Windows user asking how to replace a Microsoft feature with a Google product. I know how that sounds. 😂

Has anyone found a way to make this work?

Extension Small free tool for anyone who prints several tabs at once (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Firefox)

Something I couldn't find in any browser: select a handful of tabs and print them as one job, in order, without doing Ctrl+P on each one. I needed it for work (lots of health insurance pages for the same case), so I built an extension and it's now on both stores.

How it works: select tabs → right-click → Print Selected Tabs → one combined preview → print once or download one PDF. Text stays real text (no screenshots), and nothing leaves your computer.

Happy to answer questions about how it handles tricky pages.

Extension I ported my two browser extensions to Firefox — looking for feedback from Firefox users

Hey r/browsers — I've been building extensions for Chrome and just finished porting both to Firefox. Curious what Firefox users think, since I know this crowd cares about things like privacy and performance more than most.

Obsidian Citation Capture — one click turns a journal page into an Obsidian note with the full citation, abstract, and PDF link. For researchers who live in Obsidian.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/obsidian-citation-capture/

DevTools Full-Spectrum Assistant — a DevTools panel that audits pages for form issues, accessibility problems, and runtime errors, then suggests fixes and re-scans to prove they worked.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/devtools-full-spectrum-asst/

Both are free to try. I'm the solo dev, so honest feedback (especially "this is broken") is genuinely useful.

Feature-by-Feature Comparisons of Browsers

Is there a website that will allow me to select several browsers and compare their features at a line-by-line level with a focus on privacy and security? I'm not looking for browser recommendations. I'm looking for tools that will let me compare browsers, not just today, but again and again so I can stay on top of how they fair.

Discussion If your main browser ceased to exist tomorrow, which would you move to?

NOTE: This is meant as a non-judgmental open forum post, so take your negativity and shove it if you're planning to shit on people for their choices.

I use Trivalent on my main Fedora build. But if Trivalent didn't exist and I was aiming for a secure alternative that I can trust will be maintained for years to come... hmm, genuinely, it just comes down to the big corporate browsers. I am skeptical of the claims of many big "privacy browsers", all I care about is that it loads the stuff and has protections against big exploits. So for me that leaves me with a few choices: Chrome, Edge, and Brave. I'd have to debloat all with policies to get them near what Trivalent has, but for me the biggest focus is on update pace, so it would probably just be Chrome with some flags altered and integrations disabled via policy (mainly the Gemini stuff).

What would you guys move to if tomorrow your daily driver browser died?

Helium Helium suddenly taking 10-20 seconds to load pages? Changing the default search engine actually fixed it—has anyone else experienced this?

Hey everyone, I use Helium as my daily browser. Lately I've been seeing posts about Helium acting up with slow page loads, and the same thing happened to me. At first I told myself it was fine, but it got to the point where every refresh took 10 to 20 seconds. As a mod I'm constantly jumping between modmail, notifications, and comments, so that delay was driving me insane.

Out of frustration I switched my default search engine from DuckDuckGo to Kagi. The first load was almost instant, pages opened smoothly. Then I switched again to Bing, and honestly? Pages are loading great now, and even media loads way better.

So my question is: is it actually possible that the default search engine can slow down page loading in Helium? Or am I just tripping? 😭 I'm not tech savvy at all, I don't really understand how speed and all that works, but this trick genuinely worked for me.

I also wanted to ask: is Bing a good search engine privacy-wise? Since I'm using it now, I figured I'd check. I love Helium and don't want to switch browsers, I just want to understand what's going on.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is a dumb question lol.

Helium Helium, probably the only browser I've went to workarounds to keep using

Thumbnail gallery
97 Upvotes

I've tried a few browsers, mainly the most popular ones, and Helium is the ONLY one that despite its issues, because every browser has their issues, I've gone out of my way to find workarounds to keep using

I'll keep the post short because that's how much I've gotta say about Helium, and specifically that's the thing I love about it:

  • It's a minimalist browser, it doesn't have ANYTHING that's not absolutely necessary for the browser to work, and it's got the exact settings that I (personally) look for in a browser
  • It's clean, like, DEAR GOD it looks clean, side tabs? it's a small space compared to other browsers and have absolutely NO more than absolutely necessary
  • The cherry on top: frameless mode, it already looked clean, like Brave Origin, but with a proper frameless mode that you couldn't even get in Vivaldi (because forced panels, yeah fuck off), the auto hide works... perfectly, I don't even find myself accidentally poppin the hidden panels nearly as often like in other browsers
  • It works, and it works FAST, low on RAM usage, incredibly light weight, after using Brave for so long and getting used to Vivaldi for half a month, Helium was just FAST
  • UBO out of the box, standard already but still very damn good nonetheless

The only downside (for me), is the absolute lack of DRM, that means no Netflix, Spotify or Crunchyroll, I've had other issues with other browsers, but Helium is literally the ONLY one I've gone and found fixes for these issues which were to... just install these services as apps, nothing else, I miss Vivaldi's mouse gestures, but Helium is so perfect for me that I am willing to go back to keyboard shortcuts

I put in a few pictures to show how much Helium actually uses of my screen, it's just clean, yeah you can make other browsers look similar, but idk what Helium has that makes it look... so simple, and I love it, and yeah I know I'm not using ALL of my screen, but the lack of panels make the browser blend so perfectly with my desktop that I don't care

Extension Update: MRU Tab Switcher 1.1.0 – Ctrl+Shift+Tab in reverse, a settings page, and much easier Ctrl+Tab setup

A while ago I shared MRU Tab Switcher, an extension I built with Claude’s help to get Brave’s Ctrl+Tab behaviour back after moving to a Chromium browser. Thanks for the feedback! Version 1.1.0 is out:

  • Ctrl+Shift+Tab goes the other way through your recent tabs. Pressed on its own, it jumps to the tab you used least recently.
  • Brave-style history: every tab you land on while cycling counts as recently used, same as Brave.
  • Settings page (right-click the icon → Options): how long a pause ends a cycle (0.3–1.5 s), Brave-style history on/off, and cycling the current window or all windows.
  • Much easier Ctrl+Tab setup: a welcome page opens after install with a “Copy setup code” button, so you just paste it on the shortcuts page. Chrome still doesn’t let extensions take Ctrl+Tab by themselves, so that one-time paste is still needed.
  • The icon goes grey when it’s off, and the right-click menu has shortcuts, Ctrl+Tab setup and help.

Still no page access, no tracking and no data collected. Free and open source.

Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ffkjkhogdepleegfoakgihhmcfekdnoa
Code: https://github.com/Hariprasad-b-s/mru-extension

If you already have it, Chrome updates it automatically. To get Ctrl+Shift+Tab, rerun the setup code from the settings page. Feedback and bug reports welcome!
