Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Approached in public

I don’t think I give off inviting vibes at all in public and yet I get approached atleast once a week by a man. It genuinely annoys me and creeps me out. Last week I was walking home by myself at 11pm from a concert and a man followed me around the corner to hit on me. Today I had headphones on and a man stopped me to ask me for a coffee. Is this normal in a bigger city? Can any women give me some advice for feeling more safe when I am walking alone or tips to not get approached .

Housing and Moving 🏑 Anyone move from Toronto to Metro Vancouver with a young family? Was it worth it?

My husband and I are seriously considering moving from Toronto to Metro Vancouver next year with our baby, and I'd love to hear from anyone who's made a similar move.

I grew up in Vancouver but moved to Toronto about 10 years ago. I've visited BC regularly over the years and honestly never felt the desire to move back. Toronto has always seemed to offer so much more in terms of lifestyle, neighbourhoods, restaurants, and things to do. My husband was born and raised in Toronto, and we both genuinely love living here, especially neighbourhoods like Leslieville, The Beaches, and Roncesvalles.

But now that I'm a mom, my priorities have shifted. My closest family and friends live in Metro Vancouver, and they all have young kids now too. The thought of our children growing up together and having that sense of community is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Also, we're finding more townhouses within our budget in Metro Vancouver than in the Toronto neighbourhoods we'd want to live in.

Despite a slight salary cut, we're lucky to be able to transfer our jobs from Ontario to BC.

What's making us hesitate:

- My husband's entire family and career are established in Toronto. We both have better job opportunities here

- We love Toronto's walkable neighbourhoods, independent shops, restaurants, and overall energy

- I'm concerned that suburban life in Metro Vancouver might feel too quiet or isolating compared to what we're used to

- We'd be leaving behind a financially comfortable, established life for something that still feels uncertain

We're mainly considering Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and possibly New Westminster. Ideally, we'd love a safe, family friendly neighbourhood with other young families and cafΓ©s, restaurants, and shops within a reasonable walking distance (15-20min max).

I know Vancouver isn't perfect, and I never thought I'd seriously consider moving back. But becoming a parent has made me rethink what matters day to day.

For those who've lived in both Toronto and Vancouver, especially with young kids, how does the quality of life compare? Do you miss Toronto? Did moving closer to friends and having more of a community make a meaningful difference? Would you do it again?

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Immigrants/newcomers/transplants, who do you rely on during hardship?

β€’ Upvotes

Hey everyone,

This question is specifically for immigrants and newcomers who "recently" moved to BC on their own (without a partner/family), either from another province or another country.

Who do you rely on during crises? Who's your emergency contact?

I moved to Vancouver 5 years ago, and I think I've been too caught up with being an overachiever and putting all my time and effort into my career that I forgot to build a connection here and find my chosen family. I'm going through a rough time currently and it just dawned on me that my support system is non-existent, and even worse than that, I have no idea where to start building it.

Admittedly, it's hard, especially as an adult, but I'm wondering if anyone's done it and, if so, how.

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Best spots for first snow experience?

I'm staying in the city until the second week of january and am looking for seeing snow for the first time. Where should I go? What should I do? Honestly, I'm not really interested on spending a lot of money in ski gear or anything like that... just wanted to check the life list of seeing snow at least once in my life lol

Travel πŸš— ✈ YVR to LAX on Wed afternoon

Real talk (not whatever Google suggests):

How many hours in advance should I arrive in YVR for a flight to LAX if my flight leaves at 4:00 pm on a Wednesday? I am checking a bag and I am a U.S. citizen with Global Entry. I feel like three hours is excessive, but given that I haven’t traveled to Vancouver before, I thought I’d ask y’all. 😊

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Landing in Van at 1am

Doing my yearly stopover in Whistler from Aus, before flying to my parents in Ontario this Chrissy.

I will be landing in Van at 1am early December, compared to my usual late afternoon arrival.

My shuttle bus to Whistler leaves from the airport at 9am so I have a pretty big chunk of time to burn through. I’m assuming I’ll have my bags and be ready to perch about 2am, so about 6 hours to kill before I make my way to the shuttle.

My question :

- would it be worth it to check into the Fairmont at the airport at this time? Has anyone done it before had had a seamless easy experience?

- should I just rough it somewhere in a cozy corner for those 6 hours?

My flight is 10hours Syd - Honolulu (6hr layover), then 6 hrs to Van. A SHIT FLIGHT but was free with points. I’ve done this flight many times but so over it. Any extra tips for my Van airport experience would be so appreciated πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Hi everyone, I’m considering taking the Welding Foundation program at UAPICBC. For anyone who studied there, how was the school, training, and overall experience? Also, how easy was it to find a welding job after graduating?

Would you recommend the program? Thanks!

Events and Activities πŸ±β€πŸ Went to Bruno Mars in Vancouver last Wednesday and loved it. What upcoming Vancouver concert should I go to next?

I went to Bruno Mars last Wednesday and had such a good time that I’m now chasing that feeling again. The energy, the live band and the crowd singing along were all amazing.

I’d love to catch something similar in Vancouver over the next few months. Let me know your thoughts.

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Recommendations for realtor for buyer?

I found a few threads from 4-5 years ago where it seemed people were DMing good recommendations! Instead of randomly DMing someone based on a 5 yr old comment, I'll give it another shot - does anyone have recommendations for a good realtor for a buyer? We are looking for probably a detached property somewhere in Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, or North Van.

From previous advice, it seems we should stay away from the bus ads and big names, and rely on word of mouth recommendations. However, we're the first in our social circle to buy, so I'm humbly coming to reddit in the hope of recommendations! Would also welcome any tips anyone has for FTHB.

Food πŸ˜‹ Richmond food crawl

Visiting Vancouver for the first time and planning to do a self-guided food crawl in Richmond. Should I plan to bring cash to Parker Place and Aberdeen Centre? I normally never have cash on me, but if I should come prepared because some vendors don’t accept credit cards, I’d love to know before flying out.

Work 🏒 Seaspan Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation Job?

The Seaspan Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation position has been posted for quite some time, and I’m wondering whether it’s worth applying.
Can anyone offer some insight into what it’s like working at Seaspan, particularly within the Electrical and Automation department?
I’ve come across mixed reviews about working at Seaspan, but that seems to be fairly common with any large organization. I’d be especially interested in hearing from anyone with firsthand experience in the department or a similar role.

Oddly Specific 🎯 lost black pouch with keys on 14 bus at 6:08 pm heading downtown from UBC

hi I dropped my black pouch and keys on the bus at around 6:08pm today on the bus around sasamat stop. It was on the 14 heading downtown and it has my student ID, work keys and other keys. I’d really appreciate it if anyone knows about it to let me know. I’ve contacted the lost and found by submitting a ticket and will have to call the helpline in the morning so hopefully it works out. Just wanted to cover my grounds and post on here just in case :)

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ What is the propper pool eitiquette for speed and passing?

The community center pools are small, and it's bound people will be different speeds. I go in the lane I match best, but there are still people faster than me sometimes who will pass me. I've found I will occasionally get passed in the fast lane, but will usually be passing everyone in the medium lane. Do you jus keep swimming when someone passes you? Sometimes instead of trying to pass someone myself, I'll just turn and swim the other direction if I would hit someone coming towards me if I tried to pass. What is the proper etiquette? I've also had people get disgruntled with me sometimes if I bump them without meaning too.

I tried lord bying at 6am and it was just unpleasant it's so small

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Where do people in their 30s go?

I’m newly single after being in a relationship for nearly a decade and I want to meet new people and feel alive again. I’ve outgrown clubs and bars. Where do all the folks in their 30s go to meet people?

My hobbies include Lagree, going to the gym, cooking, gardening, and I’m just getting into running. I tend to do all these on my own and don’t really belong to a community so I find it difficult to meet people.

Any advice?

Housing and Moving 🏑 People that live at 5058 Joyce Street - what's it like?

Wife and I have some viewings coming up for 2 apartments in this building(tall newer building at Joyce Skytrain).

Location seems good and price is decent for the current market.

My main concern is it is owned by Westbank and seeing them in the news over the past few years does not fill me with confidence this is not a dud.

From laying off staff to being in serious amounts of debt makes and seeing people online compliants about them cutting corners in construction has me worried about the quality of the building itself, future repairs and lack of a contingency fund to help pay for any special levy down the road.

Anybody live here, worked on the building itself or have any experience with Westbank properties?

Cheers!

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Homesick student

My daughter is in her first year at UBC and feeling very homesick and has yet to really connect with a good group of friends. She’s far from home and I hate not being able to help her out. That said, I wondered if anyone knows of any cool things happening on or close to campus for students away from home and struggling to connect socially. I know there are other quiet kids out there!! How do they find each other??
