Announcement Wiki editors and maintainers wanted!

Hey folks, r/askseattle and our team over at /r/Seattle are looking for folks to help us build, update, and maintain our wiki and sidebar content. The /r/Seattle wiki was once a boon of information for new visitors and locals alike, but the subreddit has grown and sites/businesses have come and gone. Our mods are busy moderating and the wiki is collecting cobwebs.

I'm reaching out to members of this community specifically as you are most likely to benefit from (or be knowledgeable about) this content space. This community is entirely based around helping visitors and residents alike find answers to questions that frequently get buried / reported / removed for being duplicates in r/seattle due to the size and velocity of other posts.

If you're interested in helping us out, here are some details:

  • The main areas of work are obviously the wikis on this subreddit and r/seattle
  • You'll be working with the mods here and r/seattle to help decide the organization and categorization of wiki pages, and how we add content / posts / etc to them
  • You will not be asked to moderate, so no need for moderation or wiki experience
  • The only requirements are a post history shows activity in either this subreddit or in r/seattle that we can trust with edit access to our wiki

If you're interested, shoot a message to the mods here or the seattle sub - these links have the title all filled out for you - or just send me a message or comment here.

Cheers!

Question Tower 12 had NO hot water for 7 days. Management threatened to have security FORCIBLY REMOVE us for handing out flyers in the lobby. Help! What are our rights/how do we move forward?

Hey Seattle we are at a complete loss and need tenant advice immediately.

I live at Tower 12 Apartment Homes (managed by Weidner Apartment Homes). Back in September, our building went without hot water for over 7 full days. We have elderly and disabled neighbors living here whose daily health, hygiene, and dignity were severely impacted.

When we asked for fair rent credits for lost habitability, management refused. When residents left honest 1-star reviews online to warn others, management got them scrubbed and deleted.

AND TODAY IT GOT WORSE

We were just standing in our lobby handing out flyers to organize our neighbors outside of management's moderated online app. The building director walked out and claimed she “just got off the phone with their legal department” and told us that what we were doing was illegal and that they would have security FORCIBLY REMOVE US if we didn’t stop and leave the lobby immediately.

Except under Seattle law (SMC 22.206.180), tenants have an EXPLICIT LEGAL RIGHT to organize, leaflet, distribute information, and gather in common areas without landlord harassment, interference, or retaliation.

Multiple residents have already filed code complaints with the city (SDCI), but management using fake legal threats and security to intimidate tenants into silence is out of control.

What is our best move right now? How do we hold Weidner accountable for illegal tenant intimidation and habitability breaches?

Question Local Artists

Does anyone know where to find good local artists within the Seattle area? I am working on a TTRPG game and I am at the point where I'm needing a lot of artwork to flesh out my world. However, I refuse to work with AI so I figured I would try to find a local artist to work with.

If anyone can lead me to the right place, that would be most appreciated.

Chill cozy lounges open late?

Trying to find a place to chill and draw nearby when I want to go out but need to keep things lowkey, ideally with music/live music. I live in Greenwood. I love Swamp Cow Kava Lounge (which, if you are in the Belltown area, great sober place to keep things chill) but some days it's a bit too far.

Question Snoqualmie Pass Question

I live out near Ellensburg and bought a flight out of Seattle on the 23rd of December. How bad does it usually get snow-wise? Can my Honda accord make it through the pass or am I royally cooked? Are there alternate routes that are better? Do I need to buy chains now or hope for the best later? Thanks!!!

Moving / Visiting Visiting First Time Early Jan

Hey everyone,

My partner and I are visiting Seattle early January and we’re coming from SoCal. As you can presume, we are not used to cold weather and I am very worried about being unprepared for this trip. Id also like to mention this will be our first solo trip, so I have no fucking clue what i’m doing. I’d like to ask if anyone could give any advice/suggestions as to what to bring and as well as what to do. I thought bringing a somewhat decent puffy jacket, layering, and a pair of 1420 doc martens were enough until I learned it wasn’t. Thanks for reading, any advice would be appreciated. 🫪

EDIT: we do enjoy colder, gloomy, and rainy days so thats why we aimed for January.

Moving / Visiting DFW to Seattle with kids in college and high school: what should a family consider?

If your family moved from DFW to Seattle with older kids, what took more adjustment than you expected?

This family has one child in college and another in high school. The appeal is the climate, access to nature and potential career opportunities. Higher living costs are already on the list of concerns; I'm more interested in the parts that are harder to price in advance.

How did the move affect the kids' routines and your own day-to-day life? Was there anything you wish you'd checked before committing?

On the work side, testing a few suitable roles before moving seems more useful than assuming the location alone improves the options. For anyone juggling that with family logistics, spending less time filling out applications is a practical reason to try autofill.

Would you make the move again, and would you change the timing around school?

Sailing in Seattle

Hi all!

I’m from Australia and moved to Seattle a decade ago. I grew up sailing from a family of sailors and am looking to get back into in over here.

Any recommendations on how to get involved / find a crew spot on a yacht here? Not looking for anything too hardcore but evening / weekend racing.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Question Seed donation in Seattle?

My gardening needs have changed and I’ve been going through my seed binder and I have a ton of partially used packets of seeds that I’m not going to need. Is there a place I can donate these seeds? The vast majority are flower seeds, but there are a few tomato, bean, and gourd seeds mixed in there too.

What was the Kingdome like in its prime?

Howdy howdy! I apologize if this is the wrong sub, but this has been nagging me since like 2011 when I found out it had existed.

What was the Kingdome actually like to see events in and such before it got imploded? I know it was a multi-use stadium that wasn’t good at any of them, and people pissed in the sinks, but past that I don’t know much.

Thank you very much in advance for any response, and I hope y’all have a wonderful day!

Question Does Anyone Know…

I went to a restaurant/coffee house in Seattle years ago that had amazing Vietnamese coffee. It was a quaint little 2 story house. Restaurant upstairs. Coffee shop downstairs. I met my niece there maybe like 8-10 years ago. I still think about that coffee. She doesn’t remember where it was. I’m wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone and if they are still in business.
Thanks!
