question Is it easy to remove a permanent crown installed with a temp cement?

Post image
• Upvotes

Here’s the cement

I received my crowns today and they were a shade lighter than I like. The dentist ordered a new set and installed the permanent crowns with temp clear bond. Will they come off easy? How is he going to pull them without damaging the teeth underneath? These are front teeth 7 thru 10 and I’ve had root canal before. I’m afraid they are too fragile

question Advice needed, starting to get skeptical of our child's dentist/ortho

Post image
• Upvotes

Our oldest daughter went to the dentist years ago and needed a bunch of stuff done. They cut into her mouth to expose incoming teeth, attached chains to pull them into place and then years with braces.

We were fine with it, stuff happens right?

Well now our middle child is being told the exact same thing is needed. They want to cut into her mouth and use chains to pull the teeth into place.

It feels like a script. This was not a problem my wife or I ever had so id be skeptical of it just being a genetic thing... but idk

Here's the xray they used to show us the "problem"

I guess I just want to ask if anyone can look at this and confirm there actually is a problem or if this is a common pathway some dentist use to get clients to a partnered ortho for years of payments from a new patient.

Patient is a 10yo female who appears to be healthy in all other aspects, no developmental or physical disability (if that makes a difference) and has naturally lost a good amount of her baby teeth but the exact number is not something I know off the top of my head. No history of cavities or other oral related problems. Parents history, father had impacted wisdom teeth which were not removed until mid-late 20's, several teeth damaged physically by impacts. Very little dental care but other than physical injuries causing teeth to need to be removed, has straight healthy teeth except lower front has one tooth that "overlaps" another (idk how to explain it better than that) and had several cavities as a child. Mother had braces in her teens for roughly 3 years, several cavity that had been filled over a lifetime. Teeth are straight and healthy except one tooth that was chipped due to an impact.

question Options for fixing my front tooth chip on a budget? (No veneers)

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I fell and chipped the bottom corner edge of my upper front tooth a while back, and it's making me really self-conscious about my smile.
Veneers are out of my budget (£4,000 is way too much for me right now). What are my best, more affordable options to fix this chip? Has anyone done composite bonding for a chipped front tooth, and how did it work for you?
Also, my dentist offered a professional home whitening kit. Is a dentist-provided whitening kit significantly better than over-the-counter teeth whitening strips, or is it worth the extra money?
Would love to hear your experiences or advice!

question Confused about state of tooth extraction.

• Upvotes

My tooth extraction site has been experiencing weird characteristics. Yesterday there was a worrying amount of pain but I would not describe it as excruciating at all like maybe people would say about a DS. I actually went to the dentist yesterday and they did say I had a DS. But it still didn’t explain why it responds well to medication. For most of yesterday the pain was a 3/10 that would only go up to 5/10 if I was talking a lot. No pain while eating either. For context yesterday was day 4 after my extraction and I want to say I started noticing the pain on day 3. Today is day 5. And I woke up with a 6/10 pain. But as soon as I got up and took my pain medication the pain went right back down to a 3/10. This is very confusing as I’m not sure if I require the painful medical packing that the dentist is offering me today. I really do not want to go through that. But it’s hard because I do not know exactly how bad this thing will get from here.

question Crown prep before discussing material

• Upvotes

Hi all, went in for a crown on a molar. It is my first time having a procedure like this. the dentist began shaving down the tooth and put on the temporary when I asked about the material that would be used. Is prepping the tooth before discussing material common? From what I understand gold allows for more enamel to be saved. Was my tooth unnecessarily reduced more than required based an a dentist assumption I would get porcelain? I’m honestly a little stressed about this thought.

Also, any input on material would be appreciated. The tooth is the top back molar. aesthetics is very important to me, but the tooth experienced resorption and just underwent a root canal to try and preserve it. Along with bruxism (wear a night guard) I feel like I need to give the tooth all the fighting chance I can. against the tongue does porcelain and gold feel the same.

Thanks for any suggestions.

question I need a possible 2nd opinion regarding calculus build up

• Upvotes

I recently got a new dentist. Not by choice but because my old one retired and sold it to a new doctor.

This is my 3rd appointment with this new outfit, and the last cleaning was abrasive. I actually told the hygienist to stop because I was in pain. Then she says I have a lot of calculus build-up around my teeth and some 4-6mm pockets around my gum line.

Im a little suspicious. She wasn't my regular hygienist, who is also a hygienist instructor. My normal hygienist stated I needed to get a water pik, and the new lady said I do not.

Im being recommended a full scalling and deep cleaning with anesthesia.

Now, I brush and floss every day. I do not stay hydrated enough. that's true. Maybe that could cause the calculus build-up?

You could see the calculus in spots on my x-rays, but it didn't seem like it was out of control.

Dental hygiene is a big deal for me. Im curious if I should get a second opinion or if this new office is on point with their diagnosis.

Any advice is appreciated.

question What’s the aftercare for two extractions (6 year old patient)?

• Upvotes

My son needs his front two bottom teeth extracted because the adult teeth are growing in behind them (“shark teeth”). The appt is on a Thurs at 1:30pm. I’m sure the dentist will provide some care instructions but I’m trying to plan ahead. Should I plan to keep him out of school on Friday? Should I pick certain foods up at the store beforehand?

question First time having issues, dentist is suggesting root canal + crown here is this correct ?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello, everyone,

First time having "big" dental issues, I took one appointment and the dentist is suggestting root canal + crown for my case here. I don't really have any aching maybe drinking cold water only slightly, unfortunately in my country they kind of like to overcharge and do as much health treatment as possibles even when not necessary, hence why I'm asking for your advice here

Thanks in advance.

question Wisdom tooth pain, not sure what to do

• Upvotes

I'm sorry I can't get a good picture, don't have my recent X-rays either

Saw a dentist last Wednesday to establish care as I've had sensitive but only occasionally painful wisdom tooth for some time and finally was able to get dental insurance that would cover enough to let me get seen. They did a routine cleaning and scheduled the extraction of both my upper wisdom teeth (only one is currently in pain/really troublesome) in December, as that's the earliest they had. Completely understandable!

However, since then, I've had four of the worst pain days with it I've ever had. I caught a slight cold and since then it's been very swollen and much more painful than usual, enough that it's difficult to sleep, move or open my mouth, or swallow. I've tried managing it with ibuprofen and Tylenol, as well as brushing it extra carefully (which is difficult due its placement and the fact that about half of it has already crumbled away, so there's a pocket that is both very sensitive and difficult to clean) but it just isn't letting up.

They're already trying their best and I don't want to be a bother, but the pain is pretty difficult to just work through. It's radiating up the side of my face and gives me headaches behind that eye on that side of my face, and I can't talk comfortably nor play my instrument (I'm a classical musician who plays a wind instrument)

When is it ok to reach out and ask for help or to be seen sooner? I don't want to annoy them and they probably will just tell me I have to wait, but I don't know how to manage this for another month and a half. Dentists, would you want to know if a patient was hurting like this or is it clinically irrelevant and am I just being weak and should hush up and work through? If so, any advice for how to do that?

Two different dentist have different opinions. One dentist says I have decay under filling and other dentist disagrees.

These are composite fillings.

experience/story Composite filling fell out, dentist said it was too shallow and fine to not replace

• Upvotes

I'm seeing a new dentist (moved to new area with new insurance). Found someone a with great reviews as an upfront honest and reliable dentist. He's been doing it for 40+ years, so some I figured some validity to the reviews.

Had my routine cleaning a month ago with no issues, but over the weekend my back molar (I believe #30) had a composite filling shifted/chipped. I called the dentist to schedule something and he could see me this morning. He says the original filling was trivial and very shallow, so my options were to do nothing or have a new filling put in. The new filling he said he would have to go deeper into the tooth to make sure it sets and holds, so for now I had him shave the sharp edge down (his recommendation) and walked out with no filling but assured I can call back if I change my mind.

Is this normal or safe? I'm obviously not a dentist but have had my fair share of dental work through the decades (minimal in the past 5+). My dental plan is difficult to change providers so I don't think seeing someone else is a quick option. He did recommend a metal filling in the back as they tend to last longer and are cheaper.

Lastly no x-rays were taken which was the most abnormal part to me. Just want some opinions, but this dentist seemed confident he has done this with many other people for decades and it's very unlikely to become an issue from this missing chunk alone.

Edit: I have had no sensitivity in that tooth before or after this filling shifted and came out to cold, sugar, or heat. He said if I get pain that lasts more that 5s from those things go back and see him.

question full denture implants at 22, advice needed

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

i’m posting on behalf of a good friend (my ex) who doesn’t like to post on reddit.

M (22y/o male, smokes weed & vapes nicotine, drinks rarely) received the news yesterday that all of his teeth need to be pulled and the poor guy needs dentures. he has decided to opt for denture implants, where they screw posts into your bones and the dentures can pop on and off. M’s parents never prioritized dental hygiene as a kid, so he never got into the habit of brushing his teeth often and unfortunately is now facing the consequences.

- he is incredibly scared, rightfully so in my opinion. his main concerns are regarding the healing process and the “after,” he does not know what to expect at all, he’s terrified of the pain and the time it will take for him to heal. also, he’s always had problems gaining and keeping weight, he’s tall and skinny - about 6’3 and 120-130lbs. he recently lost about 10lbs due to stress from back-to-back life trauma (my mom died suddenly, we broke up, his family has their own issues etc etc) and i’m concerned that he will just deteriorate over the 6+ months it could take him to heal.
- he is also wondering whether or not to opt for anesthesia or laughing gas. he’s had someone tell him “dentists aren’t anesthesiologists,” which i know is not entirely true - dental anesthesiologists are absolutely a thing. he is just afraid to be put under and wake up in the middle of the operation, but he also doesn’t want to be awake or conscious for the whole operation, which could take 7-8 hours or longer.

we do not know anyone IRL who has had this kind of operation done, and would appreciate any tips or advice from people who’ve been through this. he’s really scared and i’m scared for him too.
surgery is currently scheduled for early January, so we still have time to discuss and decide exactly what he wants to do.

main question : is this the right choice?

question where to go from here...

Post image
• Upvotes

24f, over a decade of poor dental hygeine due to severe depression along with difficulty maintaining routines due to adhd. im not in pain, i've had a habit my whole life of breaking and chewing on bones after eating meat and haven't had difficulty doing so even now, though i definitely shouldn't be doing it.

my gums are obviously messed up. it's progressed to this point slowly over the years, and despite constantly being afraid all my teeth will fall out i have largely brushed it off as a minor issue since i don't have pain. now though the papilla between the bottom centre teeth is very explicitly coming off, like its a flap of gum there instead of being stuck to the teeth like it should be. i havent included a photo of the extent to which it has come off, as I don't wish to let it peel further.

i'm terrified right now, particularly i am afraid that I won't be able to bring myself to do anything about this in time. one, because i still struggle constantly to care for myself, two because i have no insurance and have no idea how much it will cost to fix this and if i can afford it. i have already been putting off seeing my therapist again since she moved to a private clinic and will require significant payment.

i know i need someone to tell me straight out that i can't keep procrastinating on this, and that it's going in a terrible direction. even if i'm aware of it myself, i think being told by a professional that i need to take action might help. I don't know. i'm scared and im tired of myself. any advice is appreciated.

edit: mod reply said to include medications being taken, sertraline and vyvanse. vyvanse can cause dry mouth so probably important. often vape cannabis at night, short infrequent hits accompanied by drinking water cuz i cough otherwise.

question Composite bonding

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I had composite bonding done on my to front teeth yesterday to help blend my natural teeth with my Maryland bridge (missing lateral incisors) The office didn’t have bleach shades and this was the lightest shade they had. In office I felt like it looked okay but inside my home in dim lighting I don’t feel like the color is right. Photos are with flash and second without. Can I get a second opinion on this? Thanks so much!

question Is it normal for a tooth not to be restored to its original shape?

Post image
• Upvotes

I went to the dentist to have a tooth restored because it was broken, but the dentist ended up restoring the adjacent tooth—which was perfectly fine—making it larger than it should be, while the broken tooth remained broken. I went to another dentist, who discovered that the broken tooth had a cavity. She performed a restoration, but it seems she only filled the broken area rather than reconstructing the tooth to its original shape; it’s clear that the tooth is not fully intact. Furthermore, when I asked about the tooth that had been restored by mistake, she said there isn't much that can be done, as removing the resin applied by the first dentist would leave that tooth vulnerable. Is she correct about this? Should she have reconstructed the tooth completely, or are there situations where it is better to simply fill the broken part? This whole situation has been very distressing. I was already quite wary of dentists, and now it’s even worse. If the second dentist also made a mistake, I’ll be terrified to see a third one, fearing that they might make an error as well. Both dentists had excellent reviews. As I was writing this, I noticed that there seems to be resin connecting the two teeth, making it impossible to use dental floss. I apologize if this is confusing; I am using a translator.

In the image, the top tooth is the one that shouldn't have been restored, and the bottom one is the tooth that was broken.

question My two upper front teeth are too big

• Upvotes

Hiee so I'm 18f and my two upper front teeth are really big and it makes me hate them. I've had my braces and they've been removed and I've asked for a teeth reduction but they've declined saying that I'm young for it and wait a little because years down the line my face shape shall change.

But I'm really insecure about it, and I have started to hide my laugh behind my hands because everybody is pointing it out.

So at what age shall I seek for the teeth reduction process and how much longer should I wait?

experience/story Is this normal?

Post image
• Upvotes

Yesterday I went to dentist for a routine filling. When I got home I was surprised to find my lip and face quite swollen and four chunks out of my lip. Picture is from 24 hrs later. Bruising is developing now.
Should I be following up on this? I see the dentist in a hospital because I have a bleeding disorder. So normally they’re very gentle with me, as I can bleed excessively. This has never happened to me before. Am I just lucky I went this long without getting cut like this? Is there not a way to protect my lip? It was not a back tooth, only about halfway back.
ETA - I know that the amount I bleed can make it hard for dentists to see what they’re doing. I have overheard them complaining about it. So maybe he just lost sight of the drill?

Noticed this small white bump today, it is painless but asymmetrical to the other side.
