question Advice for my cousin's teeth?

• Upvotes

Good teeth have always ran in my family, but for some odd reason, my first cousins, starting with their mother, have a history of tooth rot. Their mother (my aunt) started having tooth rot in her early 20s and was always fearful of going to the dentist to get it sorted because she didn't want to be judged. By her mid 30s, her diet was only liquid foods because her teeth were so rotted. Well now my male cousin's teeth are doing the same. He's only 22, but his teeth look just as bad now, as my aunts teeth did in her early 30s, granted, he doesn't take care of them. He never brushes, shoot I don't even think he knows what his own teeth look like. They're all there, however, they're literally black and there's holes all in them. Just last night, he started having tooth pain with bleeding and is acting as if he has no clue why. I don't want to tell him that it's because his teeth are rotting out of his face, as it sounds rude. I told him he should go into the dentist office as an emergency walk in but he refuses, saying that he's gonna wait to see if the pain subsides with the next week and that, until then, he's just gonna keep using orajel to numb the pain. He literally seems to have no clue as to why his teeth hurt. It sucks to see someone close to me willingly be so uneducated about tooth health.

question Numb feeling ~2weeks after RCT retreatment

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello,

I had a root canal re-treatment 12 days ago on molar 19. Took about 40 min and endodontist said everything looked the way he wanted it to.

Pain from procedure went away in 2 days. On the third day while eating a salad it felt like bit down too hard or something scraped that molar and the top of it no longer felt the same on my tongue. I called my endo office and sent them the above pic. They said it looks normal and that the material they use does dissolve and break off normally, so I went about my day. Everything has felt fine since with just occasional dull throbbing sensations.

Woke up today with a strange feeling directly under the molar. Not pain but sort of a soft, dull, numbness like the feeling when the rct anaesthetic is starting to spread across my jaw (except this one is just staying under the molar).

I don’t think it’s swollen any more than the minor swelling thats been there since before the procedure yet, but it’s hard for me to say for sure.

Three weeks before the procedure I did swell up there and got put on antibiotics which brought it down. I can’t remember if it felt like this before it swelled up but I’m on high alert to any sensations around this tooth.

I would call my endo but it’s the weekend. I’m wondering if this is a normal thing or if I need to go get looked at? I have been having a lot of anxiety flare ups this year and want to make sure I’m not just overthinking something that’s actually nothing.

Thanks dentists 🧡

question Extraction vs root canal

Post image
• Upvotes

I was told a while ago I needed a root canal in my top left (3-7) tooth. Well losing dental insurance and just overall financial difficulties delayed this. I started getting pretty significant pain on that side of my mouth last week. Went to the dentist, (xray attached) and was told there’s infection and prescribed antibiotics. I was told the root canal dentist would look over it next week to determine if a root canal is able to be done. I was also told that there’s a possibility my wisdom tooth could come down but no guarantees if so or when.
I’m debating between extracting and root canal. I’ve already my bottom right (3-7) extracted.
It makes me nervous to spend so much on something that may not be 100% successful.

Opinions welcome!

question Exostose????

Post image

question Post-Op mouthwash is awful (chlorhexidine)

• Upvotes

Just had my upper wisdom tooth extracted and lower coronectomy in Wednesday (both on same side). I was told to rinse starting after 3 full days with chlorhexidine mouthwash. It’s left a tingling sensation on my tongue and has made everything taste terrible. After looking it up, I keep seeing things about it being dangerous or not used much anymore and now I’m afraid to use it. Is it safe? Is there any alternative I can use?

question What to eat after tooth extraction?

It's been 31 hours since my tooth got extracted and I have barely ate anything. Only a banana smoothie, then a few packs of applesauce and pudding, then an oatmeal smoothie. I cant even chew on the opposite side of my mouth because a tooth there needs a root canal. So one side has the extraction site, and the other has the tooth needing a root canal. The tooth I had extracted was the one I was chewing all my food with, but it was infected and had to go. So im all out of options. But i am absolutely starving, and I'm unsure if i can even eat this noodle soup that I have here right now. It has like small little noodles that look easily swallowable.

question Newly Sensitive Tongue

Post image
• Upvotes

I used to like moderately spicy and moderately sour things. Nothing too crazy. But I’ve noticed my tolerance for these things disappearing over the years. It’s to the point now that my tongue is sensitive to even basic things (like black pepper).
How does my tongue look? Anything that might explain this change?

I don’t drink nor smoke. I do have Eosinophilic Esophagitis & Eosinophilic Asthma.
I had three esophageal dilations this year.

Fun fact: I have not, nor will I ever, have wisdom teeth. I was born without the roots for them. 😊 I like to think it was God’s way of giving me a break, since I’ve had a lot of other health issues. lol.

question 2 root canals NAD

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all! I am 28yo drink and smoke socially and I had three teeth needing root canals I have extracted one so now it’s just two left but these prices are insane. I don’t have good credit so any payment plans don’t apply to me (I have been denied 3 times). I’m in immense pain and feeling like I need to bite the bullet soon. They are both molars one upper and one lower i am already missing two upper on the opposite side. Is both extracted really that bad and is there a way to fix the gaps?

question 1 month after filling - hurts when chewing

• Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I had a small cavity that required a filling on my 1st molar located on the upper left side of my jaw. It's on the side that's adjacent to the 2nd molar (I think it's called an interproximal filling).

I went in August 26th when the filling was done. I had pain when eating and flossing that continued for weeks so I went back to my dentist and she redid the filling on September 16th (almost a month ago).

Since then, it's been way better, but I still have pain when eating harder or crunchier foods. It's not as sharp, but rather a dull-ish pain. I also have mild discomfort when floss goes in or out. I went to my dentist in the beginning of the month and she said it should settle down within 1-2 months and said the filling is fine. She did an xray and bitewing and both showed nothing.

To me, this is not normal, but I'm not a dentist so I'd appreciate some insight from people who understand this. Is this normal for such a filling and should I just wait it out? I don't want to keep going every week to my dentist about this.

question Professional Advice + Route to take -

Thumbnail

What is YOUR assessment on these teeth?

Patient is 35, doesn’t drink, smoke or drink coffee. Patient has been pregnant x2 and noticed gums got worse afterwards. Patient clenches teeth a lot and in their sleep. Jaw may have started shifting- to be checked again. Those bumps in second pic are like extra tissue? They pull away from the teeth.

Gums receding but what is the route you would take to fix? What about those flaps of gums?

Thank you.

question Deep filling sensitivity even after a year

• Upvotes

So I actually suddenly got a brust of cavities out of nowhere this year, they were all minor ones and got it filled and never had any issue since then...however there is this one filling which the second last premolar on the left side of lower jaw that was done a year ago, it was a deep filling so it remained quite sensitive after the treatment was over. I though its the normal healing process but now fast forward to a year and the sensitivity is still there. I can eat most food fine I face no pain or bite issue either however the tooth gets triggered to water...its just a brief sensitivity which might last only a second or two or even less and settles as if nothing happened but since it still reacts I know my nerve is irritated. Just to get a confirmation thats everything was fine I got an x ray about two months back and as expected my dentist confirmed the tooth was healthy with no infection and that I was just over thinking stuff. I dont know what to do...should I still wait it . Is there anyone with similar experience who can share some advice?

question Day 6 after mucocele removal - stressed

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi, I’m 31F and I do not smoke, drink, or use tobacco. I had a mucocele on inside of bottom lip removed Monday morning. It is now Saturday morning, and the inside of my lip still feels swollen, tingly, and there’s a red bump at the knot of the top stitch. Is this normal in this stage of healing? My lip is also super dry as you can see because I haven’t wanted to put anything on my lip and mess up the stitches or healing process. I am brushing and flossing (carefully) daily as well as a few warm salt water rinses. I feel like from everything else I’ve read everyone said they were back to 100% normal in a week. I just want my mouth to feel normal again and not be on a soft diet and look so gross. Also worried that my lip still feels tingly and heavy. Is it normal for it still to be so red on the inside like this?

question Hit implant, now my bite feels off

• Upvotes

Hi! I had an implant about 10 years ago, top front tooth, and I've had no problems. Last night I was reading in bed, and I guess I dozed off, cuz my phone fell from my hand and landed right on the implanted tooth. Immediately it felt like the tooth moved back 1-2mm, and was impacting my bottom teeth when I bite. I went to sleep hoping it'd sort itself out overnight.

This morning, it's not as bad, like it's moved back to it's normal position somewhat, but it's still hitting the bottom teeth when I bite. There's no pain, some mild soreness is all. I'm hoping it will scooch forward on its own overtime, since every bite kinda pushes forward on the implant, but I suspect this may not be optimal lol. Should I get it checked out?

If so, follow up: I'm between dentists at the moment, because of insurance reasons. Should I just get in with a normal dentist (which I need to do anyway), or try contacting the dentist who did the implant to begin with?

I drink occasionally, do not smoke, don't use recreational drugs, photos would probably be uninteresting (there's no visual damage or change).

Thanks!!!!

question Help ! Lump in my inner lip

Post image
• Upvotes

I recently noticed a lump inside my lip (visible in the photo), and I'm worried it could be something serious.

A few details:

Location: Inner lip, towards the upper side.

Size: Slightly larger than a pea.

Texture: Smooth, round, rubbery, and slightly movable.

Pain: Completely painless.

Appearance: Slightly whitish and swollen.

Some background:

I used to accidentally bite that area, causing it to turn white and become painful, but that was months ago.

I've been smoking for about 2 months.

Not sure how long the lump has been there, but I noticed it recently.

I'm worried about oral cancer, especially because I smoke.

question Bourbon tonight after composite fillings this morning?

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I had some composite fillings this morning that were completed just before 10 AM. My dentist said no crunchy, hard, sticky foods for first 24 hours, but I forgot to ask about bourbon.

Saturday nights are typically my "bourbon" nights where I have a glass or two of whisky and watch one of my shows or a movie. I was planning on doing the same tonight at around 1030-11PM (so 12-13 hours after filling), but I looked up "can i have alcohol after a composite filling" and online it says wait 24 hours.

However, all of the reasons listed tend to be like "it might burn a bit, it might sting, it might be sensitive, you could bite your cheek if you're still numb, etc."

If I truly shouldn't drink within 24 hours, I wont. However I know that a lot of these guidelines tend to be out of abundance of caution, so I was wondering if it would be (realistically and practically) safe to drink a bourbon or two tonight as long as its not hurting when I do so.

Realistically, what complications/risks could I expect if I were to have a glass or two this evening 12-13 hours after the filling? My concern isn't so much with a little stinging, I just don't want to ruin the filling and be a "bad patient" for my dentist.
