AUSTRALIA Can we get ALDI to listen? An idea for customers who want ALDI to stay the people’s choice 🇦🇺
I’ve recently been seeing posts from people discussing self-checkouts being closed and concerns about cost-cutting and staffing. Today, I experienced it myself: a long queue at the staffed checkouts while the self-checkouts were closed.
It got me thinking about what makes ALDI appealing in the first place. For a lot of us, it’s the affordable groceries and the fact that ALDI offers an alternative to the big supermarket chains like Coles and Woolworths.
But I don’t want ALDI to lose what makes it different in the pursuit of cutting costs.
This is what I sent to their feedback form
Hi ALDI team,
I wanted to provide some feedback regarding the checkout experience in your stores and the direction ALDI appears to be heading.
I’ve recently seen increasing discussion from customers about self-checkouts being closed, alongside concerns that this may be connected to reducing staffing costs. Today, I experienced this myself, with a long queue at the staffed checkouts while the self-checkout area was closed.
As a customer, it’s frustrating to stand in a long line when additional checkout facilities are available but aren’t being used. One of the reasons I shop at ALDI is its affordability and efficiency, but experiences like this make shopping unnecessarily time-consuming and leave customers questioning whether cost-cutting is being prioritised over the customer experience.
I think now is the time for ALDI to remember what makes it different, rather than risk becoming just another supermarket giant like Woolworths or Coles. What makes ALDI special is that it has the opportunity to remain the people’s choice by continuing to do what it does well, staying true to its values and putting people first.
And when I say people, I mean both customers and employees.
Customers shouldn’t be left standing in unnecessarily long queues, and staff shouldn’t be put under additional pressure because of decisions that leave them trying to manage growing queues with insufficient support. Employees deserve to feel heard, valued and supported in their roles, rather than feeling that their working conditions and wellbeing are being compromised to reduce costs.
I understand that running a business comes with financial pressures and that there may be operational reasons for closing self-checkouts at certain times. However, I believe there is a difference between running an efficient business and cutting costs in ways that negatively affect both the people who shop there and the people who work there.
ALDI has built a strong place in the Australian supermarket market by offering an alternative to the major chains. I would hate to see that point of difference lost through decisions that prioritise short-term savings over customer satisfaction, staff wellbeing and long-term loyalty.
Please continue to be the ALDI that people choose because it offers value, but also because it respects people’s time, supports its workers and listens to its customers. Being the people’s choice should mean more than having affordable groceries; it should mean making decisions that consider the people who make the business what it is.
I hope this feedback is taken seriously and shared with the relevant team. I want to continue choosing ALDI, and I hope the business continues to make decisions that give customers and employees reasons to feel good about doing so.
Kind regards,
A concerned customer
Maybe if enough customers independently share their experiences and concerns, it could help make these issues more visible to the company
