Problem/goal: I just really need to get this off my chest because until now, I still canāt believe how everything ended. My ex and I were together for almost 5 years. We wouldāve celebrated our 5th anniversary this coming January, but we broke up right after our daughterās birthday. For context, our relationship was never perfect. We went through so much together, and honestly, ang dami na niyang nagawang kasalanan sa akin. When we were only 2 years into our relationship, he cheated on me not once, not twice, but FOUR TIMES.
I know. I know some people will probably judge me for staying, and Iām already expecting comments asking why I didnāt leave the first time.
But please understand that we have a child together. I grew up knowing what itās like to have separated parents, and I never wanted my daughter to experience the same thing. I wanted her to grow up with a complete family, even if that meant giving someone more chances than they deserved.
Fast forward to this year, our relationship started falling apart. Ang dami naming unresolved issues, and whenever we had problems, we never really sat down and talked about them properly. He was busy because he was a graduating student, and I didnāt want to add more stress to his life. So most of the time, I just kept everything to myself.
During his last year in college, he became close with a group of girls. At first, I honestly had no problem with them. He introduced them to me, and they were actually nice to me in the beginning.
But eventually, I discovered something that completely changed how I saw them.
One time, he left his Messenger account open on his laptop. And thatās when I saw conversations about him asking to be set up with another girl from their circle.
YES. MY OWN BOYFRIEND WAS ASKING HIS FRIENDS TO SET HIM UP WITH ANOTHER GIRL WHILE WE WERE STILL TOGETHER.
And the worst part? Those girls knew about me. They knew he was in a relationship and that we had a daughter together.
I honestly couldnāt understand how they could entertain something like that knowing he already had a family.
Around that time, I also found out through my old friends that he had been going out with those girls several times.
And hereās the ironic part.
Those were the same friends my ex previously asked me to cut off because they kept telling me whenever he was doing something behind my back. They were also the people who had exposed his previous cheating incidents.
Looking back, I honestly regret cutting them off.
And you know what hurts the most?
During those same days, I had been asking him to go out with me. Kahit simpleng date lang, because we barely spent time together anymore. We werenāt living together because I personally didnāt want to live at his parentsā house, so seeing each other regularly was already difficult.
Whenever I asked him out, he would always say he was busy or didnāt have money.
But apparently, he had time to go out with his girl friends.
Of course, we had a huge fight about it. Eventually, we made up, but honestly, nothing was really resolved.
Then came his graduation.
He told me that only two people were allowed to attend, so our daughter and I didnāt go. I was completely fine with that because I wanted his parents to have that moment with him. After all, they supported him throughout college.
Later, some of my old friends invited me to their graduation party, so I decided to attend.
And thatās when I found out something else.HE BOUGHT ALL FOUR OF THOSE GIRLS BOUQUETS OF FLOWERS.
Yes. FOUR bouquets.
I was honestly speechless. This was the same guy who constantly told me he didnāt have money whenever I asked him to go on a date with me.But somehow, he had enough money to buy flowers for four other girls? Iām not even saying that giving flowers to friends is automatically wrong. Itās the fact that he could make that kind of effort for other women while constantly making excuses whenever it came to me.
And to make things worse, he found out I attended my old classmatesā graduation party because he saw me in someoneās story.
He messaged me about it because those were the same friends he had told me to stay away from. The audacity, right?
So I confronted him about everything. The girls, the flowers, the times he went out with them, and how unfairly I felt I was being treated. We had another huge argument. At that point, I genuinely wanted to break up with him. I was so tired of feeling disrespected and constantly questioning my place in his life.
But there was one problem. **The next day was our daughterās birthday.**We had already planned a celebration for her at his parentsā house, and I didnāt want our issues to ruin her special day.
So once again, I swallowed my feelings. We acted like everything was okay, even though he never really explained anything to me.
Then came the birthday party.I honestly didnāt even want to push through with it anymore because of how hurt I was. But I reminded myself that the celebration was for our daughter, not for us.So I showed up, smiled, and tried my best to enjoy the day. And guess who else was there? Yup. Almost all of those girls. What made everything worse was that they didnāt even bother greeting me. They literally walked past me as if I didnāt exist. These were the same girls who used to act nice around me. And my ex? Instead of making me feel comfortable, he kept them somewhere off to the side of the house, away from where I could easily see them.
I donāt even know what he was trying to accomplish by doing that.
Then those girls gave our daughter a small bouquet of flowers as a birthday gift. And I swear, seeing that bouquet brought back everything I had been trying so hard to suppress. I know my daughter had nothing to do with any of this, and I appreciated that they brought her a gift. But I couldnāt stop thinking about how my ex could buy flowers for those girls while making me feel like asking him for a simple date was already too much. The entire party, we acted like a normal, happy couple. You wouldnāt even think we had serious relationship problems.
After the celebration, his parents were wondering why our daughter and I werenāt staying at their house.
But I just wanted to go home.
My ex drove us back to my place, where our daughter and I lived. I genuinely thought that once we were alone, we would finally talk about everything that happened.
But we didnāt. And then, the following day, something happened that I honestly never expected.
HE BROKE UP WITH ME.
Yes. HE was the one who ended our relationship.
I was completely shocked. Not because I didnāt want to break up. In fact, I had already been thinking about leaving him. But after everything he had done, the cheating, the disrespect, the lies, and all the times I had forgiven him, somehow HE was the one who decided to walk away?
I know it sounds ridiculous, but part of me felt insulted.
Parang ako pa yung may kasalanan sa lahat. After everything I endured just to keep our family together, he was the one who gave up. And the most painful part was realizing that I had spent years trying to save a relationship that he could apparently walk away from just like that. For once, though, I didnāt chase him.
A few days after our breakup, his mom messaged me asking when our daughter and I would visit them again.
I didnāt reply. I know some people might think that was wrong because his parents werenāt necessarily involved in our relationship problems. But at that point, I was so hurt and angry that I didnāt want to deal with anyone connected to him. A part of me also felt like they would naturally side with their son anyway.
A few weeks later, I found out that his mom had blocked me.
And honestly, that hurt too. I donāt even know why she did it. Sometimes I wonder if my ex told them a completely different version of what happened, making it seem like I was the bad person in our relationship. But I donāt know for sure, and I donāt want to assume.
Itās been a month since we broke up. And although Iāve finally started accepting that weāre no longer together, I still have moments when I question everything. I keep thinking about how much I tolerated, how many times I forgave him, and how I kept choosing our family even when I was already hurting. I know staying after being cheated on multiple times was my decision. Iām not trying to justify it. I just genuinely believed that keeping our family together was the best thing I could do for our daughter. But now Iām slowly realizing that maybe having separated parents isnāt the worst thing that could happen to a child.
Maybe growing up watching her mother constantly get hurt and disrespected wouldāve been worse.I donāt regret having my daughter with him. Sheās the best thing that ever happened to me. But I do regret losing so much of myself trying to keep someone who repeatedly showed me that he couldnāt love me the way I deserved. And what hurts the most is that after everything, I feel like Iām the one who ended up looking pathetic, while he got to walk away like nothing happened. Iām trying to move forward now, not just for myself but especially for my daughter.
I just hope that one day, Iāll stop wondering why I wasnāt enough for someone I gave almost five years of my life to.
For those who stayed in a relationship because you wanted to keep your family together, how did you finally learn to let go?
