/r/WiiU's Monthly Question Thread

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Monthly Question Thread, a place where all of your Wii U-related questions can be asked and answered in. Besides questions, feel free to post your unboxing videos and pictures here, so that way it doesn't back up the main subreddit page.

Please make sure you check out our other Wiki pages, make a search through the subreddit or Google before you ask a question. Most of the time it has already been answered. If you're too lazy, then this thread is perfect for you!

Handy Resources

Which games can you recommend me?

What features does the Wii U have?

What controllers work with this game?

Which USB hard drives will work with my Wii U?

Can I get a free game? - Begging for games is prohibited and may result in being banned.

Question My Wii U killed2 2.5inch HDD already

I bought a Wii U that came with a 500GB HDD, used in conjunction with an adapter and a Y-cable. After a while, the HDD started acting up, eventually failing completely, the drive would spin up and then stop repeatedly. I later replaced it with a portable HDD, but that one also stopped working after a short period. It seems like there might be an issue with the power supply from the Wii U’s USB ports, perhaps a voltage drop or something similar. Has anyone else experienced this? If my USB drives are degrading, what should I do?

How to tell if I soft or hard modded my Wii u?

So I brought a Wii u and modded it but have never really touched it so going to give it away. I want to offer it to someone unmodded as I feel that will be their preference but I just don’t know how to tell if I soft modded or hard modded it. I saw someone say just take out the SD(?) and it will boot to stock if it’s soft modded, but I don’t know the difference between what a stock boot and modded boot would look like, and I can’t for the life of me remember anything about the modding process.

Does external storage (HDD) do really need a Y connector?

ive just modded my wii U and 32gb internal (SD) card is not enough for the games i want to install. ive searched or recently viewed that the modders were using USB Y connector to connect to their HDD. is it necessary or i can just use an ordinary single one. i dont have HDD and a connector rn, basically the reason im asking. and one more thing. ive got an old internal HDD from my old PC, i believe it is still working. can i use it as will and find a right cable/connector to use it as my Wii U's external storage? many thanks good sir/s

Question Looking for recommendations for where to get Wii U gamepad parts!

I got a Wii U and gamepad from GameStop a year or so ago, eventually the battery went dead and I had to remove it, but one of the screws was totally stripped out so I had to cut a chunk out of the back door to replace it, and in general the gamepad shell and sticks are all marked up. Does anyone have a recommendation as to where to get a new/used shell, thumb sticks, and probably digitizer? Thanks! Wish the Wii U was popular enough for there to be all kinds of custom shells for it.

[Guide/Tutorial] How to fix Error 150-3032 on Wii U, format the drive, and recover your saves

Hi everyone! If you ran into Error 150-3032 on your Wii U, it usually happens due to corrupted data or bad sectors on your external hard drive. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to check if your drive is still alive, format it properly, and recover your save files using dumpsterU and SaveMii.

Step 1: Check if the Hard Drive is still working

Before doing anything, verify whether the hard drive suffered a permanent hardware failure or if it still responds:

  1. Connect your external hard drive to your PC.
  2. Open Command Prompt (CMD) as Administrator.
  3. Type diskpart and press Enter.
  4. Type list disk and press Enter.
  5. Check the list: If your Wii U hard drive appears with its correct storage capacity (e.g., ~465 GB on a 500 GB drive), the hard drive is not dead and you can proceed.

Step 2: Backup your Saves using dumpsterU

To extract your save files before formatting:

  1. You will need your console's otp.bin and seeprom.bin files (you can dump these easily using nanddumper or similar homebrew tools on your Wii U).
  2. Download and launch dumpsterU on your PC, then load your otp.bin and seeprom.bin files when prompted.
  3. Load your Wii U hard drive in dumpsterU and dump/extract the save data folders (save.data) for the games you want to recover.
    • Note: You don't need to dump the entire game files with dumpsterU, as you can re-download games much faster using WiiU Downloader.

Step 3: Clean and Format the Hard Drive on PC

Once your saves are safely backed up, wipe the drive clean to remove the corrupted Wii U file system:

  1. Open CMD as Administrator and launch diskpart again.
  2. Type list disk.
  3. Identify the disk number corresponding to your external hard drive (e.g., Disk 2).
  4. Type select disk X (replace X with the exact number of your Wii U hard drive).
  5. Type clean and press Enter.
  6. Close Command Prompt.
  7. Press Windows + X and open Disk Management.
  8. Find your drive (it will show as unallocated space with a black bar), right-click on it, and select New Simple Volume.
  9. Follow the setup wizard by clicking Next through all steps (assign a drive letter and standard NTFS or FAT32 format) until finished.

Step 4: Prepare your Wii U and Games

  1. Reconnect your hard drive to your Wii U. Important: Always use a Y-cable (dual USB) to ensure the drive receives sufficient power.
  2. The console will detect the drive and prompt you to format it for Wii U use. Accept the format.
  3. Download your games again using WiiU Downloader and install them onto your freshly formatted hard drive.
  4. Essential step: Launch the game you want to restore saves for, and play for a minute or two to create a new, basic save file. This generates the system file structure that SaveMii requires to overwrite.

Step 5: Organize the SD Folder Structure & Restore via SaveMii (Aroma)

dumpsterU extracts save folders in Cemu-compatible layout (with account subfolders like 80000001 or common folders). To allow SaveMii to detect them on your Wii U, organize your SD card folders like this:

  1. Find the Game's Title ID:
    • Look up the Title ID for your specific game version (a 16-digit code, e.g., 000500001010EC00) on sites likeutik.91wii.com.
  2. Create the Folder Path on your SD Card: The final path on your SD card should look like this: SD:/wiiu/backups/[TitleID]/0/80000001/
    • Go to your SD card directory: SD:/wiiu/backups/
    • Inside backups, create a folder named after the Title ID of the game.
    • Inside that Title ID folder, create a slot folder named 0 (or 000).
    • Move the extracted folders from dumpsterU (such as 80000001 and common, if present) inside that 0 folder.
  3. Restore with SaveMii:
    • Insert the SD card into your Wii U and launch SaveMii from the Aroma menu.
    • Locate and select your game from the list.
    • Select Restore savedata and choose Slot 0.
    • Choose the source user folder from the SD (e.g., 80000001) and select the target Wii U user profile you want to assign the save to.
    • If prompted to restore the common save, select Yes.
    • (Note: If you have multiple user accounts on the console, repeat the process to restore each user's respective save profile).

And that's it! Once you boot up your game, your saved progress will be fully restored and the 150-3032 error resolved.
