Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

My great grandfather took this photo - probably in India, possibly in Patiala. It's quite a distinctive building and we're trying to figure out where it is/was. The photo was probably taken between 1917 and 1927. Any help greatly appreciated

Finally got back my space selfie of my dog after a wait of two years, and honestly have no idea where this is. I can't seem to see any land, but I'm not really good with geography. Is anyone able to help out with this? Much appreciated.

Does anyone recognize this location from a Loud Cvlt ad?

This is a frame from a Loud Cvlt Instagram ad promoting Before Long. Does anyone know where this was filmed, or if it's even a real place?

Photos was taken of my late grandparents on their eurotrip (Copenhagen/Malmö) as far as I know.

Photos were taken some time from 1988 onwards based on Chatgpt (Canal Tours Copenhagen), but I can't seem to pinpoint the exact location where the photos were taken.

The pier photo could be at Ofelia Plads but I'm not entirely confident..

Will be heading to Denmark/Sweden later this year and would like to pay a visit to these locations.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Thanks everyone for the kind help! Will mark the post as solved.

These 2 photos were taken in either 1997 or 1998 on the south coast of England. The figures in the foreground (a dance group) have been erased to protect privacy. I always thought it was Chichester but others disagree and one thought it might have been Christchurch. Does anyone recognise where this might be please so that the group can update its archives. Thanks.

Solved A Fun American Apartment Building Mystery!

I have studied this card for a while, and my wife and I spent about 30 minutes trying to figure it out. It shows an apartment building that a little kid has scribbled on, and the back says, "Home and Apartments on Lafayette Blvd. and 23rd street". I am thinking the industrial Northeast, but the street names are woefully common. What do you think?

Solved Can anyone identify this exact location in the Italian Dolomites?

Hi everyone!

I’m currently on a photography trip through the Italian Dolomites, and I’ve been trying to find this incredible location, but without any luck so far!

I’ve found several photographs taken by different photographers showing exactly the same mountain peaks and a beautiful little waterfall in the foreground.

One of the photographers mentioned that this location is close to her home. She lives in the Misurina area, with views of Tre Cime di Lavaredo, so it might be somewhere nearby, although I’m not completely sure.

I’ve already spent hours comparing mountain silhouettes and searching Google Maps, but I haven’t found a match.

Does anyone recognize these distinctive rock formations, especially the tall, sharp peak in the center?

Even knowing the name of the mountain range or valley would be incredibly helpful!

I’d love to visit this place and photograph it before my trip ends.

Thanks so much for any clues or suggestions!

Space Selfie from Satgus. I got the email on October 19th at 2:00pm EST. The actual screen on the image has 7:24 very blurry in the left upper corner and idk if that’s accurate or even what time zone it would be. My prediction is Brazil but I couldn’t really tell because the clouds. Wanted a second opinion from others.

Solved [Germany] Looking for the exact location of a woodwork barn in the Allgäu region (3 photos from Dec 2016)

Hi everyone,

I am trying to find the exact location of a standalone wooden barn/workshop I photographed in the Allgäu region (Bavaria, Germany) on December 16, 2016. Unfortunately, my photos don't have GPS tags, but I have a precise timeline that might help Geoguessr pros and locals.

• Photo 1: Taken at 09:03 AM. It shows a standalone wooden barn directly next to a normal, two-lane federal highway (Bundesstraße). On the wall of the barn, there is a white company logo with the name "Reichart" and a stylized wood plane (hand plane tool) symbol above it. Right in front of the house is a "60" speed limit sign, and directly below it is a green/yellow rural hamlet sign (Ortshinweistafel) that reads "Haus". In the background, behind some trees, a high-voltage power line/mast is visible.

• Photo 2: Taken at 09:07 AM (exactly 4 minutes after the barn). Driving along the same road, the view opened up to this stunning panorama. Looking southeast into the low December sun over a thick layer of valley fog covering the Alps.

• Photo 3: Taken at 09:09 AM (6 minutes after the barn). Shows a classic Allgäu farmhouse on a hill and high-voltage power lines emerging from the fog on the left. These are likely part of the same power grid line that passes behind the barn.

Important Clues:

• The road is a regular two-lane highway (not a small, winding village road, but also NOT a 4-lane divided highway/autobahn).

• The hamlet is called "Haus".

• Based on the 4-to-6-minute driving distance from the barn to the panoramic viewpoints, all three spots must be within roughly 4–6 kilometers (2.5–4 miles) of each other.

Can anyone recognize the exact mountain silhouette or know where this specific "Reichart" barn in the hamlet of "Haus" stands along a German Bundesstraße? Thank you so much for your help!

A Literal Train Wreck (A tough one)

My wife and I spent about a half an hour on this one as well, and I feel like it should be easy. This is a train wreck. It's snowy and there are open plains. The engine and cars can be seen. At one point someone wrote So. Pac. RR on the back, but I can't be sure if that is accurate or just speculation. It's a fascinating picture, but it remains a mystery to me!

Final Scene in film: Berliner Ballade (1948

Thumbnail

The final scenes of this film are set in a cemetery - the (damaged) sign says 'friedhof zur auferstehung' which I was interested to discover is a real cemetery in Berlin (Auferstehungsfriedhof). I'm just wondering if anyone could figure out where these scenes actually were shot - I thought they might be on Indira-Gandhi-Straße as there is a bridge possibly over a railway. Unfortunately I can't see any sign of the gasometer in a 1943 image on google earth but to be fair the image may not be clear enough to show that level of detail

Honestly, there isn’t much information. I am from Spain, and I assume this photo was taken in Spain, given the "tricorne" hat worn by the *Guardia Civil* and the presence of bulls. There isn’t much else to go on. Searching online, I’ve found similar photographs involving the herding of bulls on horseback, but I haven’t come across this specific one, and the others don’t seem to have the same tone. Another clue is that my grandfather had two similar copies; this suggests it wasn’t a private, personal photograph, but rather one taken by a professional photographer, with copies subsequently distributed or sold. Based on the details in the photo seems impossible, but perhaps it could be found if the collection it belongs to is identified. Thanks!

Some stuff I noticed:
little chapel with a pointy bell tower on top
the house next to it looks pretty destroyed, probably from the war
there’s a soldier standing in front, I think German?
a village down in the valley behind, with white houses and hills
My guess is somewhere in Poland or Ukraine but honestly no clue. Would be cool if someone recognizes it!

Solved Photo from my deceased grandma's things

Post image
155 Upvotes

Where is this? This photo is from my paternal grandma's things (USA, Pennsylvania Dutch) that my father had among his possessions and both are deceased. Her maiden name is Aborghast and her married name is Roush. She was born in PA, USA, and I'm fairly certain she had never traveled to Europe. This picture appears to be either in Switzerland (see flag with a white cross on the building to the left), or Austria based on a Google search of the words "Haus Sonnblick" from the building in the middle. I have no idea other than my Swiss/Austrian/Bavarian genealogy, where this photo was taken exactly and how it was passed down to me. There's no other information on the back of the photo and there are no other similar photos among my father or grandma's possessions.
