GUIDE What is a Decor Painting? How do I know if I have one?

What is a “decor painting”?

A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.

Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.

Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.

Where are they made?

They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:

Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.

At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.

Who’s the Artist?

While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.

Do they have any value?

Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Can I see some examples?

Decor paintings are posted to this sub almost daily, while not definitive, here are some common examples:

To locate your painting, please try the reverse-search tools Google Images/Lens, Yandex Images, and Tineye. (Remember that cropping your picture differently will yield different search results!)

If you have an artist name or signature, I recommend searching for it within r/WhatIsThisPainting itself. I also use the following websites for research; all are free.

Unsolved What do I have here?

My in-laws inherited some land with a mobile home on it in east Texas years ago. The house was given to them fully decorated and furnished by the previous owners.

This painting came with the house, and I admired it every time we visited. A few years ago, my MIL brought it to me as a gift, since I loved it so much.

Since I've had it, I've done what research I can on it. It appears to be an original oil on canvas, and the signature matches a fairly well-known Hungarian artist. I have poured through what I can find online about Bela Kontuly... but this painting doesn't appear anywhere in galleries or auctions of his works.

Could I have an unknown original, or was someone copying his later style and using his name?

I'm including photos of the front, back, signature, and gallery tag on the back of the canvas. I know very little about art collection and sales, and no idea where to even begin! I don't really want to part with the painting, but if it's a missing piece of work from a known artist, I'm sure someone out there would like to know it exists.

Any advice?

Chalk portrait of a girl, signed with three letters (I read "Géo") and dated 41 — sold at auction under an attribution that can't be right

I'm trying to identify the artist of this drawing and I've run out of leads. Any help appreciated.

The work — trois crayons (red chalk, black chalk, white chalk highlights) on buff laid paper, 50 × 31 cm (19.7 × 12.2 in) sight size, in what appears to be its period frame. Some wear and foxing. No inscription, label or stamp anywhere — not on the back of the frame, not on the back of the sheet. Bought at a small French auction near Paris in September 2026.

The signature — lower left, in black chalk: a very flattened, rising hand, underlined by a long sweeping paraph. Only three letters, then a raised two-digit date "41" followed by a dot. I read it as "Géo", though "Féo" or "Téo" are possible. Second image is the signature straightened and contrast-boosted.

What I've already ruled out

  • Jean Geoffroy, known as "Geo" (1853–1924) — this is the attribution printed in the auction catalogue, but he died seventeen years before the date on the sheet, and he signed "Geo ·" with the full year written underneath, not an abbreviated one alongside.
  • Géo-Lachaux (1891–1966), Géo Ham (1900–1972), Géo-Fourrier (1898–1966) — all three sign with their surname, never with "Géo" alone.
  • Henri Fehr (1890–1974, Geneva) — very close in style, format and the habit of dating his sheets, but he signs "fehr" in small round lowercase.

Reverse image search (Google Lens, Bing) returns nothing: this sheet has never been online, so there's no sibling work to compare against.

The sitter's clothes — large taffeta bow, Peter Pan collar, the hairstyle — fit around 1940, which matches the date. The hand is clearly a trained portraitist's, not an amateur's.

If this signature "Géo … 41" rings a bell, or you've seen it on another sheet, I'd be very grateful.

Picked this up at a thrift store. Not much info. It is a heavy wood frame. Maybe 15” wide or so? Possible initials of TH or IH in bottom left?

Picked up this oil painting at a thrift store in Washington. Been to Ecola State Park several times and recognized it immediately. Anyone recognize the signature? The style of the signature doesn’t seem to match signatures for Nancy Stein or Thomas Van Stein, two west coast artists that pop up from image searches. Back doesn’t provide any additional information. Thanks!

Unsolved Surrealist abstract ink on paper from New York, 1958

Long story short, I bought this last week at an auction in the UK purely because every time I walked past it, I had to pick it up. It was attributed to Mark Schaller but is dated 4 years before he was born. The date is correct, as I found other evidence confirming that. That also told me that the drawing was posted from Alice Behr Cottage School in Pleasantville NY to London in the late 1950s. The school helped Jewish refugees from Europe, mostly orphaned children, and the recipient was a Jewish refugee who arrived in the UK in 1938. I have vacillated over and pretty much ruled out this being Louis Schanker (though the signature is similar to one example I have found) but I am sure the signature reads "Schaller". I'm just reaching out for a fresh pair of eyes on it. It would be lovely to identify the artist.

I’ve talked myself out of buying this multiple times the past few weeks and finally decided to bring it home today. Is anyone familiar with the artist’s signature? I believe the first name is David but I’m unable to determine the last name accurately. Purchased near Dayton, Ohio at a local antique store. It reminds me of the farms where I grew up and I love it so much 🤍

Likely Solved Possibly Georges Michel?

I have this painting that I am unsure what to do with. I don’t see a signature on it but suspect it might be a Georges Michel. The family member who I inherited it from once said the artist had other artwork in the metropolitan. It definitely appears old, the other dilemma is it has damage by the base of the tree, missing paint with a hole in the canvas. Would love other opinions or suggestions what to do with it!

Unsolved Can’t make out the signature and don’t recognize the style. Any ideas?

I got this from an estate sale recently, but neither I nor the estate managers knew who this work is by. I love both the image and the frame, and don’t own many etchings of my own which is why I got this. But the signature is impossible to make out. The first name looks like it might be Edgar, but I can’t make out the last name.

I can’t take it out to examine it further without destroying the frame but maybe I’ll have to as a last resort. From what I can tell with it still in the frame, the work and signature look legit, with the signature probably done in pencil.

I’ve no idea when it was made (although the two notches next to the signature could refer to 2011?) and I can’t match the style to any artist I’m familiar with. Could very well just be a decorative piece, but without a clear name I can’t find out. A reverse google image search didn’t help either. If anyone has any ideas that would be great!

(For context, the frame sticker is from a framing company in Texas but I purchased this from an estate in Washington)

Is this table one of a kind? Was it plain before and then someone else did their own artwork on it?
I found it at a goodwill for $15.
Is it a cobblers table?
I can’t find another like this. I am 100% keeping it but I am just curious. Is it antique? What time period is this from?
Love this table.

Hello, I have this lovely photograph printed on a glass plate. It’s from the late 1800s-1910s. It is framed in a lovely carved gilt frame. I bought it at a flea market in Nashville.
It’s signed but I haven’t been able to find the photographer/artist. Does anyone recognize the signature?
Nothing else on back!

Unsolved Winnipeg/Saskatoon Art

I recently picked up two pieces from a secondhand art sale in Winnipeg. Pictured here is one of the pieces. I absolutely love them so much, but I have no clue who the artist is and I would love to know more. The only clue I have is that on the back of each piece, it said that they were sold from the Main Street gallery in Saskatoon. That gallery is no longer in existence and I’ve called around a little bit to find out, but no answers yet.

Would love to know any theories you might have!
