DISCUSSION Delivering mail on Sunday šŸ˜‚

Post image
251 Upvotes

Today was an easy Sunday and even the supe said ā€œwe should have a quick 4 hour dayā€ I love all the lies im told I knew something was up. Once I finished up I guess this station had trouble finishing yesterday so they still had splits sitting on cases from yesterday and I was told to run a 30 minute split and I’m good to go home afterwards. Easy grievance I hit up my steward so quick

I realized being a RCA isn't that bad. It's my 3rd amazon sunday and I'm quite enjoying it! I've been driving a van the last 2 times so I was nervous to use the LLV but she held strong!

Work Discussion New hire already being told I’ll be fired if I don’t work for free

I am being told I need to report to work an hour/hour and a half early and im not allowed to clock in (as I’m hourly) is this normal for USPS? last I knew this is highly illegal.
Also I was told by my supervisor that I would need to start doing so so I don’t get fired.
I’ve been there about 30 days.

Rural Carrier Discussion General customer question: Does my carrier benefit more from scheduled pickups or the convenience of not having to do a pickup? (~50 packages/day)

I ship about 50 packages a day from home, all lightweight small bubble mailers that fit into one tub. My carrier counts the packages before leaving. He's been helping me for years, so he's very fast at it. I tip him at least once a week.

Recently, I've been going to the post office because I'm getting more mail in my PO Box. I figure I can skip a scheduled pickup on those days, but would that mess with my carrier's numbers? Does he benefit more from the pickup, or the convenience of not having to do a pickup?

If I switch to doing pickups every other day, he could go from picking up 10,000+ packages per year to 5,000-6000.

USPS considers my address rural, but I live in a busy suburb so it's not actually rural.

He's too nice to give me a direct answer, which is why I'm asking here. Thanks in advance for your insight.

City Carrier Discussion I'm a rehire (city carrier PTF) and I'm told the new hire rules don't actually apply to me

I naively thought I would get eased back into this.

Nope, constant 12-12.5 hour shifts. Being told that the hourly restrictions for new PTFs (40 hours for the first 4 weeks, weeks 5-8 is 56 hours a week, etc) don't apply to me because I'm a rehire. I told the steward about this and he looked confused on why I was asking him about it.

So yeah. Getting burnt the hell out already. This is just as bad as it was a couple of years ago when I was doing 13-14 hour shifts during my first week after OJI.

Work Discussion How many offices have you worked at as a USPS carrier?

I’ve been an ARC for a bit over three years. I retired from owning a business for 24 years and came on board when I was 56 and have no desire to go career. I’ve worked in over 35 offices within a 70 mile radius. Though not trained ā€œon the mailā€ I’ll run mail routes in addition to running packages, both city and rural, even done a walking route a time or two, and have gotten a reputation as a troubleshooter. It’s almost as if I still run a business, and that’s how I treat it. I work as much as I want with the contacts I’ve managed to build. Anyone else on here do something similar, treat the job almost as a business?

Rural Carrier Discussion What kind of leeway are you allowed for just kind of being a bit bad at this job?

RCA for several months.

I'm undiagnosed Something, don't know what but I know I'm on SOME kind of spectrum, struggle with communication, and cant afford any actual diagnosis for documentation.

I complete my tasks, I show up every day, I've never called in sick or missed a day, I've never not finished my route. I feel like I struggle a lot with anything thats unfamiliar (new routes, etc) and get overwhelmed really easily but I try my best even if I do sometimes bring back mail/flats because i cased it wrong.

my biggest problem is communication. I think I understand, but sometimes I don't and I end up doing the wrong thing or going to do a different task than what I was assigned because of it and I just feel like I get a lot of 'dude wtf' when I get back to the office. I get really nervous that I'll get fired for making so many mistakes

I don't think I've done anything catastrophically wrong but I am just kind of stupid and struggle with communication, even when I try to make sure to get clarification. I'm worried I'll get fired because I just kind of consistently make small mistakes and miscommunications, but I also just haven't gotten the chance to work many jobs because of these issues and I just don't know how much leeway is allowed for this kind of thing. I don't have medication or documentation to back up anything 'real':tm: so for all purposes, I do just kind of look like a ditz and it worries me because this is the first job I've managed to get since covid and I actually really like it minus the constant 'did i fuck up' panic attacks.

What's the difference between a 'you annoyed the supervisor and made someones life hard for a few hours/day' talk and a 'you're on thin ice' talk? i'd really love some insight into expectations/allowances/whatever just to at least have something to gauge my panic attacks into X_X

City Carrier Discussion Converting soon, how's OTDL list work?

After almost 2 years of torture as a ptf city carrier I'm finally converting to reg soon and I don't want ANY OT.

So how's otdl list work for someone whose freshly converted?

The list aint up anymore at my office so are you just no OT desired by default?

Or do they still give you OT until the next list is posted and you sign up for no OT?

Maintenance Discussion Current MM7, scheduled to take 955 tomorrow, but just got promoted to MPE

Earlier this month, I scheduled my 955 as it’s been six months since my last exam. But since then I have been promoted to MPE. Which is the position I was looking to increase my score on. I have no interest in going to ET.

It’s too late to cancel my exam, which is tomorrow. Would it be an issue if I just didn’t go?

And since I got the position, I was looking to increase my score on there’s really no reason for me to take the exam.

Work Discussion CCA to PTF questions

Why does it take so long to convert?

I have access to eCareer right now, while still technically a CCA, I was never able to access it before - so in some way I'm considered career... But not on eOPF?

How does that make sense?

Additionally, it is likely I will be officially converted during open season - as late as December though. I wonder if I can select a career health plan when open season starts, or I will have to wait until my official paperwork goes through?

I've got some dental work I really want done before the holidays...

Anyway I'm glad I made it this time - put in 1.5 years at another office, took a .5 year break and applied again. This place drives me crazy sometimes.

Work Discussion USPS with a Bachelor's degree?

I'm in my early thirties and am about to begin as a PSE clerk at a plant, Tour 3. However, before this I tried for a little over eight years to build a career for myself as a freelance video editor editing movie trailers -- I did manage to work for some clients. I applied to numerous entry-level government jobs in my city, -- San Diego, -- but ultimately couldn't land any. I have a Bachelor's of Science in film studies.

My current plan is to work as a PSE clerk and work on directing my own films in my spare time from feature-length screenplays that I've written years ago. For the sake of keeping me creatively fulfilled, if nothing else.

For those of you currently working at USPS with Bachelor's degrees, do you enjoy your life overall? Are you mostly content with the work you do, or do you feel regretful or frustrated, like you're losing out on something better of yourself?

Rural Carrier Discussion New RCA with some questions

So im starting soon as a Rural Carrier Associate (non career), I just bought a car from a friend (It is a sedan like my personal car but can convert into right wheel and not put miles on my main vehicle), im serious about making this my career. To give some background, I'm in Hampstead NC and its a small town that is growing very quick. I just want some tips and advice on how I can exceed at my job. I have observed mail boxes on my way to my current job and have been very confused (1406- next mailbox 1489) Seen "follow the mail" but how do I do that when the numbers are wild? Appreciate any advice.

Mail Handler Discussion Just got an offer to be a mail handler

I just got a job at the post office, I've been reading some of the post here. I have been basically a NEET for my entire adult life and I've been scraping by with occasional part time jobs and internet scams. I get by without alot of money but I'm quite averse to work. 10-15k would probably last me a year or 2 possibly more. I'm wondering if it's possible to work this job as a seasonal employee. I've heard that they make you do over time but they pay you time and half for over 8 hours of work a day plus time and a half for work over 40 hours a week which sounds pretty good. I obviously don't want this to be my life but if I work to get a stack this year and quit within a few months how easy would it be to get rehired annually. Also what should I expect from this job going forward?

DISCUSSION PM telling an RCA to stop gaining hours

A fellow RCA shared that their PM at their office has been complaining to them that they are getting too many hours. RCA didn’t understand why PM was getting mad about it and later heard their complaints is that it would affect their bonuses this year.

How the heck does our working more hours affect how much a bonus is given to a PM?
