Rants Please keep your shoes on

Y'all I know it's getting cold so our footwear can be unbearably warm. But I'm sorry your feet smell and it's distracting during lectures and class. If you wanna take them off in the halls or sub at least I can walk away.

Please keep your shoes on in lectures and class.

Also what happens if the fire alarm goes off? You might not have time to lace your dog's back in, think of it that way. Bring a pair of sneakers or slippers etc if you sensory wise can't handle it and make sure to put the stinky shoes zipped up in a bag.

Campus Life Update on Daily Grind Items on the Perks Shop

TLDR: Coffee is back in the Shop! Key changes to Daily Grind items include: monthly limits on how many of each item you can claim per month, monthly expiration of items after you’ve claimed (use it or lose it!), and certain items will have monthly caps and staggered replenishment (not all available first of the month).

What happened to coffee in the Perks Shop?
In simplest terms, engagement is up, WAY UP, and our standardized prizes didn’t have flexible enough processes in place to meet that demand.

With all the changes we’ve been making to Perks this year (new app, new prizing strategy, pop-up shops, etc), we've done exactly what we wanted: boost Perks engagement and usage! Thus, you folks claimed a semester’s worth of coffee in less than one month. It took us a minute to figure out what we should do. We had to take a hard pause to dive into the data and figure out a way forward that would give you what you need (coffee), while making sure that we’d have enough pricing budget to last the full year! We discussed numerous options and have landed on a few changes we’ll be trying out over the next few months.

How will these changes affect you?
If you had previously been getting your daily coffee through Perks, this will be a change!
There will be a monthly cap of 3 per person, per item, and the purchase will expire at the end of the month. On top of this, we will have a monthly overall cap as well, which will be dispersed throughout the month. This means the first of the month there will be new barcodes and new items that go live, then there will be restocks throughout the month so everyone has a chance to get some coffee.

Will long pauses like this happen again?
You may see coffees become out of stock, once the monthly cap has been hit, but we will do our best to make sure that coffee is replenished. We are working to make sure everyone has a chance to get their coffee, within a reasonable amount for the Perks economy. So while we hope that long pauses do not become a regular thing, the new changes are also new to us, and we will be figuring out the best ways together. Keep getting your coffee, and we will keep updating as we can!

So if I can’t redeem everything on coffee, what else can I get?
If you're looking for our next big set of giveaways, you should keep an eye on our socials for our October’s Perks Pop-up & November’s GUYA Giveaways!

Will changes and new rules keep happening?
Honestly, maybe. We know it’s frustrating, and we appreciate you for bearing with us while we figure out how we can best manage these things. We’ve learned a lot over the past few weeks, and we’re going to keep a close eye on what’s working and what’s not. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions here or email us at [perks@uasu.ca](mailto:perks@uasu.ca)

Academics I wanna drop a class

• Upvotes

Im a first year student and I feel incredibly sad that my first semester grade’s is not high. My major is Political Science, and i took stats 151. I have a few days before midterm, but i feel that i might fail it, and i just wanna drop it after the midterms as not to risk my marks. Even my Poli Sci marks are not as good. I feel lonely about it, is this normal? I had such good grades in high school.

Academics Psych 213 online lab and tutor

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m taking PSYCH 213 next semester, but unfortunately, I’ll be missing the first week due to personal reasons. I was wondering if anyone who has taken the course could explain how the first online lab works and whether it’s easy to complete from home, since I won’t be in Edmonton that week. I really don’t want to fall behind, so I’d appreciate any advice!

Also, does anyone know of any good tutors for PSYCH 213, or would anyone be willing to tutor me? I’m more than happy to pay an hourly rate!

Thank you so much in advance! 💗

Academics How did people pass math 214💔

I’m constantly practicing but I can never get a question right. I fear I’m not even gonna pass. To the people who have done this course, what were the exams like? Were they doable or diabolical and what were the averages like? The midterm is next week and I’m already sad because I don’t think I’m passing.

Miscellaneous I literally am not able to do this anymore

I am in a STEM degree. Also in depression. This thing never leaves me. I get better for a few days, and just come back to extreme depression and anxiety.

It really started almost an year ago and I have tried seeking therapy. It really was not able to help me. I am not complaining, please bear with me

I have no friends I could cry to, except maybe one (and to them too I have not cried yet because I am always very conscious about being looked as a perpetually crying person - which I am not, though)

Besides that person (whom too I meet very less), I really have no one. I am away from home, and miss my home. But I also cannot talk to them due to family issues.

I really don't even know what to do. I feel so stuck. I really just want to cry.

Below this is just extra info and not needed to be read:

I feel damn lonely. Am I being ungrateful for the one friend I have? Maybe, I dont know (and I am really sorry to them if it is so). And it is not that I am bad at making friends - I have like 100 friends, except that I am not close to any of them.

I just wish people understood me? I really love all my friends. Really love them

Residence Lister is not great for my mental or physical health

Has anyone successfully left Lister mid-year or received a medical meal-plan exemption?

I'm currently living in Lister and am exploring moving to another residence for health and well-being reasons. I also have medical reasons for needing more flexibility with meals.

Has anyone successfully received an early release from their residence contract or a waiver/refund of the mandatory meal plan with supporting documentation from a doctor? I'd especially appreciate hearing about the process, whether the university approved it, and any unexpected fees.

Feel free to DM me if you'd prefer not to comment publicly. Thank you!

Question Opinions on Psychiatry 511

I am a 3rd year neuroscience major student and was thinking about requesting to take PSYCI 511 in my second semester. I couldn’t find people’s opinions on the class on Reddit or elsewhere and was wondering if anyone here has taken it. I just want to understand what the class is like and if people who have taken it would recommend it.

Admissions Got a low grade in a class I was doing well in and I’m scared I won’t get into med school cuz of this

I had been getting really high grades in this class all above 90% and my grade before the final was a 94%. After I did the final I got a 72% and I’m still shocked how I did this badly. But now I’m scared I won’t be able to get into med school because of this because it was also an upper level class (third year) and I’ve heard they like to see better grades in these classes. I’m just so terrified right now and it’s been the only thing on my mind for the last couple weeks.

I know that ECs are a big factor in the admission decisions but having a higher gpa would’ve helped because the max amount I can end this year with now is a 3.88. and next year I can end with 3.91 but that’s just the max, I can’t get higher than that. So there’s a possibility I could get even lower.

how are my chances?

Rants Mental vs Physical Health Absurdity

Disclaimer: This post is not meant to mock those suffering from mental health issues.

This is more of a vent post, but I feel like a lot of you will find this relatable. Professors tend to emphasize mental health over physical health nowadays. I believe the goal was to have them on equal footing. However, if you ask a prof to excuse you for a missed quiz, extend an assignment deadline, or accommodate any other academic pursuit of relatively smaller weight (items with greater weight have completely different clauses for consideration), they are far more likely to excuse you for a mental health issue than a physical one.

While I do understand that a good portion of students fake these issues for a quick escape, it is absolutely not fair to those who are truly sick. Not to mention, when you are physically ill, it affects your mental well-being as well, so it seems absurd that they would not consider accommodating something that would comprise, say, 0.5–1% of the total grade. One can argue that such an insignificant amount can be made up throughout the semester, which it might be, but for someone pushing to improve their grades while going through a temporary illness of some sort, that is a massive slap in the face, as if to say they absolutely do not care how you perform.

The other context is that university is supposed to prepare you for jobs. I have met very few people who have joined university simply to get educated. I mean, almost nobody gets a university degree to sit at home and do nothing. If that is the case, then university is also supposed to prepare you for circumstances at a potential workplace. You likely cannot use mental health as an excuse for a day off at work. That is not out of inconsideration; it is expected out of professional maturity. However, you can get physically sick, have a fever, allergies, an accident, etc., and take the day off. It is actually appreciated when you take the day off if you have something contagious like the flu. So, to follow the complete opposite of that again seems like absurdity.

It is funny how some uncooperative profs think that restricting students from earning those minor percentages would "teach" them a lesson, as if to say not to miss lectures and to come to classes, while in reality, you are jeopardizing the health of everyone in a huge class.

Hah, what a joke!

Context: I had a high fever and missed a lecture where the prof took a quiz. Someone else I know skipped the lecture since they did not want to go. I emailed the prof explaining my situation and asking to let me take the quiz, but they refused. Meanwhile, this other person emailed with a makeup mental health issue and got an exemption.

Question Sick before a midterm. Anyone have experience with Dr. Myron?

I’ve been really sick for the past two days, and I’m worried I won’t recover in time for my midterm. I checked the syllabus, but I could only find information about deferred finals, nothing about missed midterms. Has anyone taken a class with Dr. Myron and know how they handle midterms missed due to illness? I’m planning to email them, but I’d appreciate hearing about anyone’s experience. I’m unsure what to do if I’m still sick on exam day. I don’t want to miss the midterm without knowing the policy, but I’m also worried about getting my classmates sick. Thanks!
