This is exclusively a community for discussing True Crime Podcasts and the cases they cover: there are many other subs where you could get advice depending on your topic of discussion; do a general search on Reddit to find which could be the best sub to post your concern.

Here are some other helpful and free online resources to find more podcasts:

  • The Google Docs Spreadsheet, a community-maintained document with most true crime podcasts in existence, don't forget to go to the bottom of the doc to find other tabs for Episodic Podcasts and Docuseries. You can also score the podcasts you've listened by following the big arrow on top.
  • Listen Notes, search any topic, case, name, etc., and find which podcasts have covered it.
  • Rephonic Graph, enter the name of the podcast of your liking and the site will create a constellation of similar podcasts.

None of these replace word-of-mouth or personal recommendations, but they are fun tools to use when looking for new things to listen to.

Are you listening to this one?

There are 5 of 6 episodes out and I really enjoyed listening to it.

It is not exactly a who dunnit, and the podcast is not trying to solve a case. It is mostly telling this case about Mindi Mibane's murder. BUT the whole story is craaaaazy. Almost unbelievable.

And the podcast is well done, by Erin Moriarty (I love her unique voice).

Anyway, this is a good one for me. And I'd love to hear your opinion.

Discussion The Silvia and Guojun case (In the Dark)

The Silvia and Guojun case is genuinely so upsetting to listen to because there were SO many red flags and signs of abuse and neglect, yet this kept going on for YEARS. And honestly, it really shows how disappointing the system is when you have a couple who were reported multiple times, like five or six times, and somehow these kids were still being failed.

And this case hits especially close to home for me because I'm adopted myself. So hearing about children being failed by the very system that's supposed to protect them genuinely hurts to listen to. You grow up thinking that social workers and people working in these fields are supposed to recognize the signs of abuse, look at the bigger picture, and advocate for vulnerable children. But then you hear about cases like this, where there were multiple reports and so many warning signs, and the system fails.

And what's even more disturbing is that, from what I've listened, the abuse wasn't even hidden particularly well. These kids reportedly had legitimate bruises and scars and had to go to the hospital. This wasn't just some vague suspicion that something might be happening behind closed doors. There were physical signs that something was seriously wrong. And apparently Silvia was bringing them to the hospital, which raises the question of why these repeated injuries didn't trigger stronger intervention???

They knew this couple had around 20 children through surrogacy, there were repeated reports of alleged abuse and neglect, and yet it seems like their wealth and their big ass mansion in California somehow made people feel like everything was fine.... It feels like people were looking at their financial status instead of actually looking at what was happening to these children.

Also why was nobody looking at the bigger picture? Why is a man in his 60s having around 20 children through surrogacy? Why are there so many children in one household? Why are there repeated reports of abuse and neglect? Why did the couple lie about their reasoning for surrogacy, etc?

They allegedly presented themselves as a couple who wanted another child when they already had one, but then continued having more and more children. They also created their own surrogacy company, Mark Surrogacy. Like, at what point does somebody stop and ask why this couple is having so many children and whether they're actually capable of caring for them?

And honestly, this also makes me question the ethics of the surrogacy industry and the loopholes that can exist when there's not enough oversight. Let's not pretend that financial vulnerability isn't a factor in this industry. Surrogacy isn't inherently unethical, and women who choose to become surrogates aren't automatically being exploited, but there's a huge difference between informed consent and someone taking advantage of a person's financial circumstances. If these women were being given a sob story about a couple desperately wanting a child when they already had numerous children, then that's a whole other level of manipulation. Absolutely bonkers.

I will say I understand social workers are overworked and under paid, but at the same time my sympathy is genuinely low because these are vulnerable kids who need help. I'm not saying every individual social worker involved intentionally ignored these children or had all the same information. I'm angry at the system, period. What is the point of having a system that's supposed to protect vulnerable children if reports keep coming in, warning signs keep piling up, and nothing meaningful happens until things get so bad that authorities finally intervene?

I just hope this case leads to actual changes in how these situations are handled, including better oversight of surrogacy arrangements and more effective child protection investigations. Because no child should have to endure this much before somebody finally decides they're worth protecting. Such an infuriating case to listen. Hope these couple for in jail, fucking crazy.

Discussion Dog With a Bone?

Anybody listen to this podcast? Someone on here recommended it and a listened to the first episode yesterday. I’m looking for opinions on whether they thought this was a good podcast. I’m not sure if I should continue.

The story seems interesting but the narrator is annoying me. Everything about her. Her voice, her cadence, and sometimes she’s clearly reading. She sounds talk like a kindergarten teacher.

Will I get over it? Should I?

I need podcast suggestions

Heyo. I've been listening to true crime podcasts since Serial. I have the luxury of wearing my headphones at work, so I do. I listen to A LOT of podcasts. I've listened to all of the classics, the good ones, the bad, the ugly ones. I've used podcast addict for over 10 years, and I have always had over 100 pod subscriptions on that app. What I'm saying is that my pickings are getting slim. I really don't have the mindset for several episode series anymore. I'll tell you what I really like is male hosts that do single episode cases. I don't care too awful much about production or sound, the microphone that the host uses...sound quality just isn't that important to me. I listen on a $40 pair of Amazon earbuds... I'm cool with female hosts, I just prefer males. I know that's a lot to ask, like what do you gift the guy that has everything, but I thank you in advance.

Recommending American Nightmare: Canal Murders

This is one of the best I’ve listened to in a long time. It’s not a lot of primary investigation, but it is a very well-done narration with a lot of fascinating twists and a satisfying resolution. One narrator, some original interviews, and some trial audio.

I’m a paying subscriber of The Binge so I was able to hear it all, but non-subscribers can listen to at least the first few episodes right now, I believe.

I listened originally to s1 of the pod awhile ago, either I didn’t fully finish it or it was before they published the identities of the victims. I just listened to it fully and wow, this is one of those cases that just leaves me speechless over and over. The sheer tenacity shown by everyone involved in the investigation, the true care that is given to making sure all 4 victims in the barrels PLUS almost everyone affected by Terry’s shitty antics were given justice. It’s weird when a murder podcast makes me feel somehow better about humanity. I cannot say enough good things about it.

Seeking Best podcast covering the Idaho 4 case?

Looking to the best podcast that covers the Idaho 4 case.

Preferably with multiple episodes as I’m flying overseas in a couple of weeks and need something to pass the time on the plane.

Also any other true crime podcasts that anyone recommends?
I find it hard to find good ones, especially ones with people that don’t have annoying voices.

In the Dark’s “The Journey” & inflection/tone of podcast hosts

I’m not sure if I’m being neurotic, but the new season of In the Dark “The Journey” is hard to listen to because of the way the host speaks. Serial is one example, in my opinion, of the gold standard of investigative journalism and how to tell a story on a long form podcast.

In The Journey, the host uses the exact same tone/inflection in every single sentence. She also splits up her sentences by pausing after every few words. It’s obvious this is meant to be for dramatic effect but it comes across as uncreative and immature, like she is reading from a piece of paper in grade school. I know these things need to be written out and read from, but it shouldn’t be so obvious to the listener. Maybe I’m being unfair but it really takes away from my enjoyment of the story, which I think is well told. Every line has this weird inflection, it’s hard to describe but it’s like the tone goes low at the end of each sentence. Either that or the tone goes up as if the statement is a question. There is no variation and it doesn’t sound natural at all.

Anyway I just needed to get this out there and I wonder if anyone else is affected by this in the podcasts you listen to?

I just finished this podcast and thought it was very interesting. I hope there is an update in a few years. I wish we got more information on what made Cindy’s daughter turn against her and why she said she didn’t want to have anything to do with her.

Recommending Cruel Summer: the violent death of Tiffany Valiante

This podcast uncovers new evidence and reworks the whole case. I remember watching the case in unsolved mysteries and thinking it was probably a suicide.

The podcast investigator reexamines the cell phone data and it clearly shows her “friends” are lying. She was caught stealing from her friend right before she disappeared…

Worth a listen!

Unfound Podcast #617

I usually find the cases on Unfound interesting. Honestly, I am always looking for more true crime podcasts because I feel like I’ve listened to all of the back episodes on so many.

However, I really did not like this certain one. It is not a traditional missing persons case. It’s one where the mother left with a child during a custody dispute. The guest that Ed had on the show was the father. I listen to these for true crime; not a one sided version of a divorce.

I personally feel this was a bad choice and not a good true crime fit. I also do not like how Ed sided in with his comments with the father.

Discussion Betrayal season 6 (Carl and Paul)

Anybody been listening to this saga? Wtf is wrong with Paul, we been knowing it’s him just tell us WHY atp…
why is he out for Carl (and/or Adam) for seemingly no reason?? if something bad once happened between C and P I think we would’ve been told, and Carl would likely have caught on to Paul…but Paul never crosses his mind, even if there’s no drama in their past how can Carl never once consider Paul, your best friend the only person who knows everything ab you just like your demonic stalker…

Seeking I am behind, just learned about Crime Junkie BS. I need new podcasts help.

I'm kind of picky, apparently.

I dont usually like podcasts, but after watch Bailey Sarian for years, and running out of good memoirs, i decided to give some podcasts a shot while I'm at work.

For context, I'm a mechanic. It's loud in my shop, but i use headphones. I do have to pause a lot and talk to people, which is part of where the parameters for what i want comes in.

I liked Crime Junkies, a lot, before I learned about them. Granted, i always felt like Brit was pointless and didn't contribute much to the podcast other than flavor, i liked them. Once i ran out of episodes, i started listening to Going West, which i like a LOT. I like their humor, and the duo is nice. But, i use YouTube Music to listen, and it didnt take long to go thru them all.

So now, i need new ones. I tried Casefile, and maybe the episode i picked was not good, but the audio quality was ridiculously poor, and i could barely understand the guy. I tried Big Mad True Crime, but she went through thins so quickly and talks so fast, i couldn't get sucked in. Rotten Mango doesnt talk about the case at hand enough, but the lore of the people (i.e. spent the whole video about a looksmaxxer getting caught with CSAM explaining looksmaxxing and talking about some other looksmaxxing creator, or she spent the whole episode with a title abt a woman video taping assaulting 13 yo boy talking about the womans husband's Instagram photos and captions bc he used coded language).

I like longer episodes, so its not over before ive had a change to pause, so 45 mins to an hour have been my typical. I like case info, facts, theoriew, but i dont want to hear your snarky comments mixed in so much that i can't tell if its case info or opinion (i.e. Rotten Mango, its so hard to tell her tone when just listening so often, that i can't tell when she's using hyperbole for a joke of it was real).

So, any good podcasts on YouTube Music with 45min or longer episodes, with quality narration? I'm sure so many ppl havw asked, but its so hard to find specifics so i had to ask. Thanks!!

Eta: I've also tried True Crime Garage, and wasn't a huge fan. Maybe i like listening to women more? I'm not sure, but they had too much to say, it felt like.

Recommending The Trial Podcast: Lucy Letby - Facts

https://open.spotify.com/episode/77aGrple4gAtdsBBw6UWFJ?si=C7a2JOwuSa6xxr9LCJRTVg&utm_source=copy-link

This is an interesting discussion between Caroline Cheetham, Liz Hull who are the hosts of the trial podcast and they’re joined by a fellow court reporter Kim Pilling.

Each of them attended everyday of the trial and are therefore in a unique and informed position

All three of them attended everyday of the trial and have some interesting insights to offer.

They start by discussing the nature of online discussion that envelopes the Letby case and in particular discuss how much of the misinformation that is out there online can be refuted based on what was actually established during the trial.

How Rachel Aviv approached the New Yorker article ‘A British Nurse Was Found Guilty of Killing Seven Babies. Did She Do It?’ is a particular subject of focus.

They use Aviv’s own words from a recent interview where she openly admits she leaves out certain details for her articles.

I think that they fairly point out that readers of the Aviv’s article who are not familiar with the case are highly likely to come away with the impression that the case against Letby was flawed.

They cover …

- Statistics including the shift chart
- Red flags in Letby’s behaviour
- Falsified medical records
- Air embolism evidence
- Insulin

I think from a discussion point of view I’ve gone deep down the Letby rabbit hole myself whenever I discuss this case with people that believe Letby is innocent I get a lot of pushback for using what was established in the court case as ‘gospel’ as though I’m making an error in argumentation, which I don’t believe is the case.

Discussion Daejon Love podcast

Just listened to Kendall Rae’s episode on Daejon Love the scammer who acted like an NFL player to get women to give him money. I am SHOCKED to see that nobody is asking how he met Taylor Jamie Chan who was 13 at the time?! Does anyone know how they met? Daejon was in his 30s and Taylor was basically in middle school when it started. I can’t find anything online and it wasn’t really addressed in the podcast
