We recorded our first episode!

Good morning! (or whatever time of day it is where you are)

My husband and I have been talking about recording a video podcast for ages, and we finally filmed our first episode yesterday. Here's what we learned:

-It was awkward being in front of a camera, even though it was just the two of us. The camera felt like a stranger in the room. It took a while before we felt comfortable and the conversation felt natural.

-Our podcast is focused on critiquing film and television. It's been over a week since we watched the movie we were reviewing, and apparently that was long enough for me to forget everything about it, even though I had seen the movie once before. In the future, we'll have to record when our thoughts are still fresh.

-Apparently, the camera has a 30 minute time limit on videos that we weren't aware of, and we lost a short bit of footage. Luckily we noticed it had stopped recording before we kept going.

- While watching the footage, I learned that my voice is a bit nasally... I have no idea how I've made it to my mid-thirties without noticing this before. I must have a deviated septum or something. Could be why I snore. I'll have to look into that. Anyway...

-It was fun. We had SO much fun making this. I can't wait until the next one.

What were things you learned after recording your first episode?

Podcast Idea Brainstorming

Hey everyone! I'm trying to come up with a concept for a new podcast I'd like to start. Two ideas I had are both movie review shows with multiple hosts. One would be focused on post apocalyptic movies and the other would be trying to determine the scariest movie ever, where we would watch the top films on lists curated from the internet. I'd really like a couple more concepts along those same lines though. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Audio editors/engineers: Where are you finding clients outside of Fiverr/Upwork lately?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been doing podcast and audio engineering work for many years now, but like many creators, I’m looking to pivot away from platforms like Fiverr due to rising fees and shifting algorithms that make it tough to connect with consistent, long-term clients.

For those of you running an independent audio/editing business, where are you having the most success finding indie podcasters or content creators directly? Are you relying mostly on cold outreach, networking communities, LinkedIn, or something else?

Curious to hear what's working for people right now.

Standard audio-wave videos were getting zero retention, so I experimented with topic-based keyframes + captions instead

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Like a lot of audio-first podcasters, I've been trying to grow on YouTube. For months, I was uploading static cover art with a basic animated waveform. Unsurprisingly, the retention graphs were terriblle - viewers would click and drop off within 15 seconds.

I didn't have the time to manually edit multi-track video in Premiere for every episode, so I put together a pipeline that parses the episode transcript, generates dynamic keyframes based on the current topic, and syncs kinetic subtitles over a light movement effect.

I'd love to get genuine feedback from other creators here:

  • Does this style hold your attention better than static audiograms?
  • Is the caption timing too fast or about right?
  • How many visual cuts feel natural for a podcast setting without being distracting?

Here is a full episode generated by the engine: https://youtu.be/eumJpmtyCpc

Premiere Audio Export Question - losing -3db

This is driving me a bit nuts and can't seem to find an answer. I have a mono WAV audio file that I sync to my mp4. When I export my wav and mp4, they both come out -3db less than the source.

Even if I just create a new project, new sequence, set sequence so all tracks are mono... and then export as mono... still losing -3db. Always the same amount lost.

Guessing this has something to do with Premiere's mixing engine always wanting and dealing with stereo? Is there a way to bypass this or do I need to apply 3db gain prior to exporting?

Spotify keeps asking if I’m allowed to use public domain music. How do you handle it?

I use classical, period music, and other pieces under my narration, and the compositions are public domain, but Spotify keeps sending notices asking whether I’m allowed to use certain tracks. I’ve learned the flag is about the specific recording, not the composition. A modern performance of a public domain piece can still be protected.

How do you source music that won’t trigger anything? Free libraries, CC0 only, paying for a license, commissioning something? I’m a solo podcaster on a small budget, so I’m curious what’s actually worked.

Looking for video clip generator recommendations

Hello,

I currently record an audio-focused podcast on motorsport. I conduct the podcast via Zoom (as that is the platform that most of my guests are comfortable with) and record both the video and audio. Currently I only publish the audio but that will change with Season 2 in January.
What I would like to do with season 1 video is create small clips to share on social media and youtube. There are a number of programs out there and I am currently evaluating Montage and OpusClip. Would love to hear from anybody who uses these are recommendations on others.
Thanks!

If you score interviews, when does the music start interpreting too much?

For people who use music under interview stories, I'm curious about one editing choice: when to let it come in.

Imagine a guest describing a job they left, without yet saying whether leaving was a relief or a disaster. A tense music bed could make the decision feel ominous before they've even finished explaining it. The exact same words over something warm would suggest a different story.

I'd lean toward leaving that part dry and bringing music in once the guest has put their own feelings into words. But maybe that makes the cue feel too obvious when it finally arrives.

How do you decide where music helps a listener follow the story, and where it's putting words in the guest's mouth?

I stayed in Blubrry, that’s how it goes

8 days or more ago I stayed in Blubrry I’m doing very well with the statistics shows the whole country everything I feel that it is very useful but I have an error when activating the programmatic monetization I get an error when putting my Paypal but what I know is that there are already ads on my podcast why my Spotify listeners tell me that to someone. But does the error of putting the Paypal happen to you?

How practical is a long distance host team?

Okay guys, Im in talks with a few friends as we discuss possibly starting a podcast together. Problem is were spread out across the country.

My main question, is how practical is that given the tech we have at our disposal? The show will be three of us cohosts (me plus two others).

My second question is what method is best for a reasonable level of production quality for a few hobby podcasters.

I have a few options as far as Im aware.

A) we all hop on a phone call and record our own tracks, then they all send them to me and I splice them together.

B) is there a way if we join a videocall for me to record their audio input from their device onto my program? Is there special hardware I need to do that? I know Zoom has a record option on there, but Ive never tried doing that with anything before. Would that support zoom calls?

Thanks!!

Niche non-fiction recommendations for inspiration

Hi podcasters. Anyone care to recommend any lesser-known science, tech, or history of science podcasts to recommend for inspiration or collaboration. Particularly those that are amateur productions.

insurance against defamation or similar issues?

Hi. I've been looking at websites that roughly cover any legal issues which might arise, from podcasts that speak about politics. I figure if you use opinions and resources from media which are easy to refer to, you're probably covered.

But do people who make such podcasts carry some form of insurance just in case?

This is for a very grassroots organization creating a podcast. They really have no money.

Sticking with Descript if we add video?

My co-host and I are still very new to podcasting, but we are talking about adding video. Current hardware/software/workflow described below. TL;DR - given my audio issue below for in person recording, how hard will it be to add video to my workflow?

Hardware/software/workflow -

  • for in person, we use Shure mics connected to a Scarlett that is then connected to a Macbook. I set levels with Focusrite C2 then use Descript to record and edit. The raw recording is split - one voice in each ear. I edit via the transcript, export in mono, then put the episode between the intro and outro saved in a Descript template.
  • remotely, I use the Shure and my co-host uses a DJI Mic 3 and we use Descript Rooms. Audio comes in as separate tracks, but my experience with the Sequence Editor in trying to tweak one or the other has been mixed, and I often delete audio rather than try to fix one track.

I think that remote use of Rooms and video sounds more doable (although when I did it once by mistake, the tracks were not aligned from a timing perspective). I'm interested in Multicam views that track who is speaking or if there is dialogue.

My concerns:

  • Will in person recording be more frustrating due to the video/audio not really being separate?
  • Not directly related to Descript - but how much extra time does adding video add to the editing process?

My initial research is pointing me towards using Rooms and my normal workflow for remote recording, but switching to Riverside (on the Pro plan I believe) to record in person, then use Descript to edit like I normally do.

Budget audio setup for recording a 3-person talk show while sending audio to a venue PA

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for advice on an affordable audio setup for a 3-person talk show that I film for YouTube.

I perform at different venues, so I need a portable setup that can be connected quickly.

I need to:

  • Connect 3 microphones and mix them into a single audio track.
  • Send the audio to the venue's existing PA system so the audience can hear everyone.
  • Simultaneously record the same audio to my laptop using OBS or Audacity.
  • Get clean, natural-sounding speech without needing a separate recording track for each person.

Wired microphones are fine, and my total budget is €300–500. I'll be purchasing in Germany.

Here is an example of the audio quality I'm aiming for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHu8Nnwt_c8

Would you recommend a USB mixer or a separate audio interface and mixer? Which exact products would you choose for this setup?

I'd especially appreciate recommendations from people who record live conversations or podcasts with an audience.

Thanks!

At what point does running a podcast start feeling like running a second business?

Something I've been thinking about is how much work goes into running a podcast beyond actually recording the episodes. There's planning, maintaining a consistent publishing schedule, managing social media, communicating with the audience, building a recognizable brand, and figuring out how to turn attention into sustainable growth.

The interesting part is that these activities all compete for the same limited resource: the creator's time.I wonder whether podcasters eventually reach a point where managing the content and online presence becomes just as demanding as producing the show itself.

For those of you who have been podcasting for a while:

- Which part of managing your podcast takes more time than you expected?

- Do you prefer handling the entire online presence yourself, or have you found ways to delegate parts of it?

- What would make you comfortable trusting someone else with your podcast's brand and social media?

I'd be interested to hear how different creators approach this as their shows grow.

How do I remove audio-only episodes from my YouTube channel (I use Podbean)?

Hi all,

I began my podcast just over 2 years ago, and originally it was audio-only. I shifted to video on beginning episode 9 (I just released episode 27). I host my podcast on Podbean. Originally, I wanted to just shift my plan to a video+audio plan, but apparently doing so will create an entirely new podcast show, which is definitely not my intention. As such, I directly upload my videos to YouTube. [If possible, please let me know if you have a good solution here.]

The thing, that means I have duplicates of every episode - one as audio-only, and one with video. I keep my video on the podcast Playlist, but I want my YouTube channel to be cleaner, so I'd prefer removing the audio-versions (from episode 9 forward).

Any tips how to do this? To clarify, I'd like to remove the audio-only versions of my episodes from episode 9 onwards OFF of YouTube. Thank you!

When an old interview has a factual mistake, where do you put the correction?

A correction buried in the show notes seems very easy to miss if someone finds the episode six months later.

For a concrete example: a guest names the wrong film as someone's directorial debut, and the rest of the answer builds on it. I'd want to hear a quick correction before that section, without quietly making it sound like the guest got it right the first time.

If you've had to fix something like that, did you replace the audio, add a note at the start, or address it in a later episode? I'm curious what actually reached listeners.

I spent $200 US on ads and these are the results (Not worth it)

Heya!

I got $200 US free ad credit with my Wordpress subscription, so I thought "why not". Ran an ad for one week.

Ad had one clickable link that took visitors to my podcast landing page with an inbuilt podcast audio player and embedded YouTube video; below that one-click links to RSS page with all the links to podcast players (Spotify, Apple Podcasts etc) and YouTube; below that blurb on what it's all about; below that episode pages with transcripts etc.

Data from ad metrics:

Ad Impressions- 220,020

Clicks- 1,391

Cost per Click - $0.12

Top Countries- USA, New Zealand (where I am), UK, Canada, Germany (all countries I'm fine with targeting)

Data on my end:

New Visitors to website - 267 (not sure why it's so much lower than "clicks" - it was set up to take visitors straight to the site)

Number of downloads via RSS -11

Number of YouTube visitors - 3

If I was paying out of my own pocket I'd feel quite sick.

I showed the results to my buddy who does ads for higher end clients in a similar-ish industry and he said it was pretty typical, although at the lower end.

I talked with him about the ad and I don't know if there was much more I could've done to improve things. Ad was pretty specific and congruent to what I do:

Ad

Thumbnail- picture of brain being massaged with clear logo "Inked Psycho Podcast:"

subtitle- Find Your Why

Description- Hear therapists reveal what decades in mental health has taught them about purpose, meaning and living life.

So long story short, I wouldn't throw my own money at ads!

Creative Producer/Co host

Looking for some feedback on the concept of finding and utilizing a creative producer and co host.

The backstory:

I’ve produced and hosted a few podcasts over the years and am in the process of starting a new project.

This new project is 100% for fun (no sales agenda attached).

I’m looking at a weekly show, unsure if video will be a component at this point.

Questions:

  1. What feedback (positive and negative) do you find in having a creative producer or co host involved?

  2. What avenues have you found success in finding those people? Key things to ensure they have?

  3. Advice on ensuring that all parties are on the same page?

DMs or Comments welcome.

I appreciate the read!

Free Online Podcast Meetup in October with a Producer & Editor

Once a month, I host a free virtual meetup for podcasters who want help getting started, improving an existing show, or figuring out what's next.

I'm scheduling the next meeting for Saturday, October 24 at 10:00 AM (PST).

I've spent more than a decade producing podcasts and have serve as a mentor with The Podcast Academy. My clients have included Ear Hustle, PRX, the Southern Poverty Law Center, destination marketing organizations, nonprofits, and independent creators.

I'm happy to help with real-world podcast challenges, including:

  • Improving your audio quality
  • Growing and engaging your audience
  • Clarifying what your show is really about and who it's for
  • Managing production to avoid burning out
  • Developing a new show or rethinking an existing one

If you're interested in becoming a freelance producer, editor, or audio engineer, we can also talk about:

  • Finding and landing clients
  • Figuring out who your ideal customers are
  • Setting your rates
  • Building a sustainable business
  • Talking about your work and business with confidence

This is a free mentorship event. I'm not pitching services or looking for clients in this community. It's simply a space for podcasters and freelancers to ask questions, solve problems, and learn from one another in a small-group setting.

If you'd like to join, send me a direct message with your email address, and I'll send you a calendar invite and meetup link.

If you've attended before, you're absolutely welcome to come back and share what's been working, what's changed, and what challenges you're facing now. Finally, I’m not the end-all, be-all of podcasting. If something I share works for you, great. If someone else offers advice that makes more sense for you and your podcast, that’s great too. The goal is to find what works best for you.

P.S. The moderators have approved these meetup posts.
