Cutting a guest's story when the rest of the interview keeps referring back to it

Hypothetical editing problem: a guest asks for a personal anecdote to be removed, but later answers keep referring back to it. Cutting the anecdote itself is easy. Now those later answers start halfway through a story the listener hasn't heard.

If you've dealt with this, what worked in the edit? I'm especially curious about cases where you couldn't bring the guest back to record new lines.

Burned by Riverside, any advice for mobile podcasting?

I've been trying to get a podcast set up eith me and my mom just for fun, I bought a mic and planned to record it from my phone with Riverside. We tried our first sound check today, and the app completely shits itself. It takes 5 minutes for an 8 second audio file to process, and i dont have anything running in the background or a bad internet connection. Then when the file finally loads, it's completely silent. I thought it may be the mic not recording right on my phone, but then I test it and it works just fine with my camera app.

I'm considering either recording on my Mom's phone and seeing if Riverside doesnt shit itself there, or trying an entirely new app and seeing if it works better. Anyone got any advice on if similar stuff happened to them in Riverside or any alternative apps they use to record?

US iPhone users – could you help me test Spotify's new podcast Memberships feature?

Hey everyone!

Spotify just launched its new Memberships system, and I'm trying to figure out how it works on iPhones in the US.

Here in Sweden, tapping a locked podcast episode only shows a long subscription URL that can't be clicked, selected or copied.

Spotify Support claims this is expected behavior outside the US because of Apple's App Store restrictions. Which honestly seems like terrible UX! 😅

I'd love to know if the experience is different in the US.

Could someone in the US with an iPhone try this quick test?

Open Spotify and find a podcast with paid subscriber-only episodes. For example:

  • Two Hot Takes
  • Making Sense with Sam Harris
  • The Shawn Ryan Show

Tap a locked episode (🔒) and see what happens.

Do you get a proper clickable subscription button, or just a long URL that can't be clicked or copied?

No need to subscribe or pay anything! I'm just trying to compare the actual experience between the US and Europe.

A screenshot would be amazing, but even a quick description would help.

Thanks so much! 😊

Social media marketing for podcasts

This is not for promotion, I'm just genuinely asking. I'm trying to transition into remote work. For social media managers who work for podcasts, what is the path should I take to skip waiting my time? What do know that most ppl get wrong?

how to start a school’s podcast

Hi, I’d like to start a podcast at school, but I’m not really sure what equipment I need. Keep in mind that there would be a maximum of 8 people speaking at once; I’m not sure where to begin when it comes to microphones, software, cables, etc. Could someone help me out?

What are your favorite plug-ins to speed up your editing?

I use Reaper to edit. I have been using EQ and two different compressions that I set up in my template years ago. But a friend just turned me on to Izotope and I am trying out their VEA plug-in. You just let it hear a sample of the track and it performs a little background clean-up, EQ and Compression. Honestly, sounds way better than what I had set up, and you can play around with the settings to get it where you want it. It is pretty dang easy, and for only $29 bucks I'm really happy with it. We are lucky enough to record in a great environment so I never have much in the way of clean up to do, but sometimes I record with guests remotely and those tracks get a little tinny or garbled. I am wondering if there is a similar tool to help out with that? I was eyeballing Velvet by Izotope as well. I have realized that as much as I like editing I really need to take advantage of tools to speed up my process, because what I lack mostly is time.

Quick question to the world of podcasting for my wildlife podcast

Hello everyone! I have been busy working on wildlife podcast ideas all this past spring and summer, trying to figure out the proper format for how I want to do this podcast.

I would love to incorporate my conservation education experience into this podcast, because I want to get back to what I loved doing. Teaching people about the incredible wildlife we share our planet with.

Since most recommend a three-episode start, I wanted to ask the community which 3 species they would like to learn more about first.

I was invited to be a guest on a fairly popular podcast in my industry, help me not look stupid

I was asked to be a guest on a podcast that is filming this coming Friday. I’m excited, but being familiar with the podcast already I’m worried I may not look professional enough. Typically the podcast is filmed in studio, but I will be remote via Fireside. I am the only guest so it will be the host and me only. Any tips on how I can make my end look professional and not like I am calling in via my MacBook ?(news flash, I’ll be calling in from my MacBook).

I have some cheap lighting from Walmart I bought for no reason but they don’t seem to do a whole lot. I have some Nanoleaf decorative lights in my office I was thinking about playing with. Currently my backdrop is a basic bookshelf/cabinet.

I’ve toyed with using my iPhone as the camera because the quality is pretty good.

Appreciate any input you pros might have!

Slight noise from outside

Hello everyone. I am currently in the process of opening a podcast studio. I have found pretty good place for that, but when I came to check in person, there was a very small noise from the outside from cars.

The microphones I will be using will be Shure MV7X. These will be connected to rodecaster pro 2. The room was without any furniture when I went there so the acoustics were bad but I will be treating that.

There was also no curtain on the windows that could block the noise further.

I know that it's hard to do a proper analysis with this description but let's say the noise was on the level of AC being turned on in the room.

Do you think it will be a big issue or will it be basically non existent when we will use dynamic mics? I know in postproduction you can isolate it and correct but I don't want to provide a service that will be having a noise big enough to be a worry.

Two-host interviews: when only one host already knows the guest

Say one host has known the guest for years, while the other is meeting them for the first time. The familiar host can bring up good stories, but 'remember that disastrous Tuesday?' doesn't give the second host, or the listener, much to work with.

I'd be tempted to give the less-familiar host the basic timeline beforehand, but leave the actual stories for the recording. They could ask the obvious questions without having to pretend they don't already know the answers. On the other hand, too little preparation could turn them into a permanent interruption machine.

If you work with that uneven familiarity, what do you share before recording, and what do you deliberately leave unexplained?

We recorded our first episode!

Good morning! (or whatever time of day it is where you are)

My husband and I have been talking about recording a video podcast for ages, and we finally filmed our first episode yesterday. Here's what we learned:

-It was awkward being in front of a camera, even though it was just the two of us. The camera felt like a stranger in the room. It took a while before we felt comfortable and the conversation felt natural.

-Our podcast is focused on critiquing film and television. It's been over a week since we watched the movie we were reviewing, and apparently that was long enough for me to forget everything about it, even though I had seen the movie once before. In the future, we'll have to record when our thoughts are still fresh.

-Apparently, the camera has a 30 minute time limit on videos that we weren't aware of, and we lost a short bit of footage. Luckily we noticed it had stopped recording before we kept going.

- While watching the footage, I learned that my voice is a bit nasally... I have no idea how I've made it to my mid-thirties without noticing this before. I must have a deviated septum or something. Could be why I snore. I'll have to look into that. Anyway...

-It was fun. We had SO much fun making this. I can't wait until the next one.

What were things you learned after recording your first episode?

Standard audio-wave videos were getting zero retention, so I experimented with topic-based keyframes + captions instead

Hey everyone,

Like a lot of audio-first podcasters, I've been trying to grow on YouTube. For months, I was uploading static cover art with a basic animated waveform. Unsurprisingly, the retention graphs were terriblle - viewers would click and drop off within 15 seconds.

I didn't have the time to manually edit multi-track video in Premiere for every episode, so I put together a pipeline that parses the episode transcript, generates dynamic keyframes based on the current topic, and syncs kinetic subtitles over a light movement effect.

I'd love to get genuine feedback from other creators here:

  • Does this style hold your attention better than static audiograms?
  • Is the caption timing too fast or about right?
  • How many visual cuts feel natural for a podcast setting without being distracting?

Here is a full episode generated by the engine: https://youtu.be/eumJpmtyCpc

Podcast Idea Brainstorming

Hey everyone! I'm trying to come up with a concept for a new podcast I'd like to start. Two ideas I had are both movie review shows with multiple hosts. One would be focused on post apocalyptic movies and the other would be trying to determine the scariest movie ever, where we would watch the top films on lists curated from the internet. I'd really like a couple more concepts along those same lines though. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Audio editors/engineers: Where are you finding clients outside of Fiverr/Upwork lately?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been doing podcast and audio engineering work for many years now, but like many creators, I’m looking to pivot away from platforms like Fiverr due to rising fees and shifting algorithms that make it tough to connect with consistent, long-term clients.

For those of you running an independent audio/editing business, where are you having the most success finding indie podcasters or content creators directly? Are you relying mostly on cold outreach, networking communities, LinkedIn, or something else?

Curious to hear what's working for people right now.

Spotify keeps asking if I’m allowed to use public domain music. How do you handle it?

I use classical, period music, and other pieces under my narration, and the compositions are public domain, but Spotify keeps sending notices asking whether I’m allowed to use certain tracks. I’ve learned the flag is about the specific recording, not the composition. A modern performance of a public domain piece can still be protected.

How do you source music that won’t trigger anything? Free libraries, CC0 only, paying for a license, commissioning something? I’m a solo podcaster on a small budget, so I’m curious what’s actually worked.

Premiere Audio Export Question - losing -3db

This is driving me a bit nuts and can't seem to find an answer. I have a mono WAV audio file that I sync to my mp4. When I export my wav and mp4, they both come out -3db less than the source.

Even if I just create a new project, new sequence, set sequence so all tracks are mono... and then export as mono... still losing -3db. Always the same amount lost.

Guessing this has something to do with Premiere's mixing engine always wanting and dealing with stereo? Is there a way to bypass this or do I need to apply 3db gain prior to exporting?

Looking for video clip generator recommendations

Hello,

I currently record an audio-focused podcast on motorsport. I conduct the podcast via Zoom (as that is the platform that most of my guests are comfortable with) and record both the video and audio. Currently I only publish the audio but that will change with Season 2 in January.
What I would like to do with season 1 video is create small clips to share on social media and youtube. There are a number of programs out there and I am currently evaluating Montage and OpusClip. Would love to hear from anybody who uses these are recommendations on others.
Thanks!

If you score interviews, when does the music start interpreting too much?

For people who use music under interview stories, I'm curious about one editing choice: when to let it come in.

Imagine a guest describing a job they left, without yet saying whether leaving was a relief or a disaster. A tense music bed could make the decision feel ominous before they've even finished explaining it. The exact same words over something warm would suggest a different story.

I'd lean toward leaving that part dry and bringing music in once the guest has put their own feelings into words. But maybe that makes the cue feel too obvious when it finally arrives.

How do you decide where music helps a listener follow the story, and where it's putting words in the guest's mouth?
