Chewer: the Left Side Brain podcast
Earlier this year, the four members of Left Side Brain (once described by Kerrang! magazine as “one of the brightest lights in British rock”) started a podcast so that we could catch up to chat about music, film, TV, gaming (although mainly music), reminisce about the LSB glory years and debate on a pre-chosen deep-dive discussion point.
While it was initially mainly a chance for us to hang out more often, we now find ourselves 11 episodes in and picking up momentum. I’m hoping by sharing details here we might pick up a few more listeners who, like us, love spending hours and hours chatting about all things music.
Here are details of all the episodes so far, in case anything in particular grabs your interest.
Episode 1: Greatest opening tracks on debut albums: Oli, G, Rich and Ryan discuss their top five opening tracks on debut albums as well as tales of how they met, early LSB gigs and filming promo videos.
Episode 2: Memorable gigs: Oli, G, Rich and Ryan discuss the most memorable gigs they’ve been to as well as reviews of recent Deftones shows and tales of on-stage crotch-stamping and scraping the bottom of the barrel in Barnstaple.
Episode 3: The most satisfying guitar riffs: Oli, G, Rich and Ryan each talk about five of the guitar riffs they find most satisfying, leading to an epic in-depth discussion of each, as well as tales of bivouacking in Lincoln with the Mega Priest and admiration for backstage dressing room wall art.
Episode 4: Exile on Main St (classic album review): Oli, G, Rich and Ryan review the 1972 classic Rolling Stones album Exile on Main St, as well as chatting about the recent 20th anniversary of LSB’s Action Potential and G’s return to causing sonic problems for the people of Bristol.
Episode 5: Rolling Stone’s greatest guitar solos: Oli, G, Rich and Ryan review Rolling Stone magazine’s top 10 greatest guitar solos of all time, as well as chatting about Angine De Poitrine live in Bristol and reminiscing about when Ryan was not-officially named the second-hardest-hitting drummer in the world.
Episode 6: Underrated/forgotten bands (part 1) with Barry Dolan: Oli, G, Rich, Ryan and special guest Barry Dolan (Oxygen Thief / Non Canon) talk about the best bands they shared a bill with that deserve to be remembered and listened to, as well as remembering how an LSB classic nearly got Barry arrested and spreading more love for the Scratch.
Episode 7: Fantasy Supergroups: Oli, G, Rich and Ryan each put together a band line-up that in another time and space they’d love to have heard / seen play together, as well as fondly revisiting an LSB deep cut and reminiscing about that time Rich was interviewed live on Ukrainian breakfast TV.
Episode 8: Make It Big by Wham! (formative album review): Oli, G, Rich and Ryan review the first album Oli ever bought, 1984’s Make It Big by Wham!, as well as dissecting a car crash of a fantasy supergroup from a listener and just-about remembering that time they were threatened with attack dogs in Cleethorpes.
Episode 9: The lost Deftones album ‘Eros’: Oli, G, Rich and Ryan discuss the leak of the legendary lost Deftones album and talk through their opinions of the tracks themselves, as well as reviewing some massive recent gigs and trying (and failing) to hold it together while analysing a newspaper article about a toilet-related emergency in a moshpit.
Episode 10: Song exchange: Oli, G, Rich and Ryan give each other a song they love that they also think the recipient will feel the same about, as well reviewing the new Mastodon album and analysing a news story about a pigeon attack on Kings of Leon.
Episode 11: Killer riffs with Jamie Lenman: Oli, G, Rich, Ryan and very special guest Jamie Lenman each bring three riffs they consider killer to the pod for dissection, as well looking back at the shared history of LSB & Reuben and talking about how Jamie was nearly poached from Reuben to join a real-life supergroup.
Thanks for reading! Podcast is available on all the usual platforms and YouTube.

The Story Tax | Why Good Decisions Become Organizational Friction
We spend a lot of time talking about "organizational friction," "bureaucracy," or "resistance to change."
When processes become bloated or meetings turn into empty rituals, the default assumption is usually that people are lazy, protective of their turf, or afraid of change.
I think that completely misunderstands what’s actually happening.
In almost every company, the processes causing friction today didn't start as bad ideas. They started as great solutions to very real problems at the time:
- A control was put in place after a major failure.
- A recurring meeting was set up during a pivot to align teams.
- A dashboard was created because a key metric was slipping.
The decision wasn't wrong. It was necessary.
The problem is what happens next: The context changes, but the decision remains.
Over time, you aren't paying for bad strategy—you're paying The Story Tax. You are paying the ongoing cost of protecting old lessons and carrying forward "temporary" fixes long after their original purpose has expired.
When we label this friction as "employee resistance," we miss the root cause. Employees aren't resisting progress; they are honoring the story and lesson that created the process in the first place.
To reduce the friction, you don't fight the resistance—you question the longevity:
- Is this control still serving the risk profile we have today?
- What happens if this meeting simply disappears?
- Are we keeping the process, or are we keeping the lesson?
Curious to hear how you handle this in your teams: How do you systematically sunset "good" decisions that have outlived their context before they turn into permanent friction?

[Our Family Invests Podcast] Episode 094: $10,000/mo Profit Per House with Residential Assisted Living - Isabelle Guarino

We sat down with Isabelle Guarino, who runs the Residential Assisted Living Academy (her dad Gene started it), and she walked us through one of her Phoenix properties line by line.
The setup: a six-bedroom house renovated into a 10-bed residential assisted living facility.
$60,000 a month in revenue
$40,000 a month in operating costs
$10,000 mortgage
About $10,000 a month left over
Some things that stuck with us:
The administrator isn’t a nurse. Most people assume it is. It’s a licensed administrator running the property, and Isabelle says it’s the most important hire in the business. Caregivers work shifts, they don’t live in. And med administration rules vary a lot from state to state, so do your homework before you pick a market.
Undercapitalization is what kills new operators. Not bad real estate instincts. Running out of reserves before you’re cash flowing is how these businesses die.
Financing is more flexible than people think. SBA 7(a) and 504 loans can cover the real estate, the renovation, and the carrying costs. There are also reduced down payments for medical professionals.
If you’ve ever had to place a family member in care, she shared what to actually look for: caregiver-to-resident ratios, call response times, and the questions most families are too scared or too rushed to ask.
Isabelle’s take is that more seniors will need care than there are beds, staff, or capital to serve them. The people who treat this like a real operation and not a side hustle are the ones who’ll be ready.

Curious what you all think. Anyone here operating an RALF or thinking about it? What’s the part that scares you most, the capital, the staffing, or the licensing?
