❓How to ask for equipment advice in this community so people can truly help you.
Every day, many people come to this community asking for gear advice, hoping to get great answers but the reality of it is, we can't really help you unless you share more details with us.
It is impossible to give any meaningful accurate advice without knowing:
- Your motivation to change gear: What is the problem and why are you asking?
- Your honest assessment of current level: What are you good / bad at today?
- Your play style now and later: How do you win / lose today? And in 1 year or more?
- Your gear taste: Do you like a hard or soft blade / rubber? Or need to find out?
- Your budget and location: Can you buy the gear at your place and can you afford it?
Also, hopefully you already understand what you are already playing with, otherwise it will be more difficult for you to understand the advice given.
If you want to know more about the topic before posting, check this out, it's the same I described above but with much more detail and examples you can relate to: https://www.tabletennisequipmenthelp.com/blog/changing-table-tennis-equipment-guide
I hope this message will help you all get better advice on this community and get the best gear possible for your game!
Thanks for reading and feedback welcome as always 🙏

The Power of Sriver and Mark V
These rubbers are cast aside today for very valid reasons. And I usually just recommend the cheaper Mercury II for learning spin and control. But if you ever find Asian uncs with Jpen and new Sriver (not the guys that don't change for 30 years), you will know what I mean.
I think there is a strong case these two rubbers should be used more. So here is a mini review of how these two dinosaurs can be used.
Mark V
Let us say you have a friend that plays badminton or something. Their hands, eyes, body are good, but they're not trained in table tennis. They just want to play with the table tennis crew sometimes. Give this rubber to them on a 7 ply.
The level of forgiveness is surreal. I have tested this 3 times, one with an acrobat friend, baseball player, and a badminton player. It is enough to make them competent to a surprisingly high level.
Other groups of players that should use this are those that don't care about one side, and just want to get the ball back over with it.
Sriver
There are many players that stick all sorts of pips or anti in hopes of subverting the game flow. But at the end of the day, after a certain level, you still need pace and attack. And I can see the fear in their eyes when they realize their opponent is not going to voluntarily self-immolate.
Sriver is enough. And I am nearly convinced Sriver Hinoki is some kind of godly defense combo. Look... if you're Samsonov, I know you can play a better version of this style with MX-P's. But for mortal tai-chi practicioners, this is the way. It is so addicting I'm certain I will switch one day when I cannot run around. And very fun to play against also.

Buying Guide Modern equivalent of old buttefly rubbers
I used to play table tennis competitvely at high school to college level between 15 to 24 years ago. I am hoping to get back to the sport but everything has changed so much.
The previous rubbers that i used and felt at home with was the butterfly tackifire special for backhand and the butterfly cermet for forehand. These are no longer sold anymore.
Would anyone know by any chance the modern equivalent of such rubbers? Giving a try here as I could not get information from the internet.
Thank you!

Buying Guide New blade suggestion
Hey everyone!
I've been using the Butterfly Matushita Power Defence blade for around 10 years now and it's finally reaching a stage in its life where the edges are barely holding it together. I play modern defence so I have the Tibhar Aurus 2.1mm rubber on the forehand side mainly for attacking and Friendship 837 LP 0.6mm on the backhand side for chopping. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this blade and possibly even a similar setup with a suggestion for a similar feeling/size blade, as they no longer sell the Matushita PD unfortunately.

Buying Guide Is the Sanwei 75 Outer ALC a good upgrade for my setup?
Hey everyone! I’m looking for advice on choosing a new blade for competitive play. I’m a left-handed player with a backhand-focused playstyle. I want a blade that gives me better control and consistency without sacrificing too much speed.
My setup:
FH: XIOM Vega Pro
BH: Yinhe Moon 12 Blue M+
Current blade: Sanwei T5000
I’ve been considering the Sanwei 75 Outer ALC, but I’ve heard mixed opinions about how it compares to other carbon blades.
Any firsthand experience or alternative recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

What makes Karlsson a better doubles partner?
There’s been some debate about whether Kristian Karlsson is underrated, but I think there’s a general consensus that he’s a great doubles player. What does that mean, exactly? What specific skills does he bring to the doubles table? And why doesn’t that translate to singles?

2011-born girl, new to serious training, long pips OX – what should she focus on before Ängby International?
My daughter was born in 2011 and has only recently decided that she really wants to improve at table tennis.
She plays long pips OX on the backhand and inverted rubber on the forehand.
Blade: Stiga Cybershape Allround
Backhand: Spinlord Dornenglanz OX
Forehand: inverted rubber
Her goal is to improve enough to have a chance of getting into a Swedish table tennis high school in the future, so results are starting to matter more to her.
Her next big tournament is Ängby International in Sweden in 12 days.
She knows very little table tennis theory at the moment and sometimes has difficulty taking in instructions and using them directly in matches. Her confidence also goes up and down quite a lot.
I would really like advice from people who know long pips and junior development.
What would you focus on during these next 12 days?
What do you see in her game that she should work on first?
Which exercises would you use?
How should she use the long pips better?
What should she think about tactically during matches?
Any thoughts about her equipment are welcome too.

I can upload new videos regularly and show how things develop based on the advice we get.

Discussion Your favourite blade-rubber combos for different levels?
Choosing a TT racket can get really confusing with so many blades and rubbers available. And to make things more complicated, the same rubber can feel completely different on different blades.
Thought it would be fun to hear what setups people here recommend for different levels, based on their own experience.
Here are my picks:
Beginner / Amateur:
Yinhe 01B racket
Intermediate:
Andro Treiber CI OFF blade + Fastarc G-1 (FH) + Andro Rasanter R42 (BH)
Advanced/ Pro:
Butterfly Viscaria blade + Dignics 09C (FH) + Dignics 05 (BH)
What are your favourite combos for each level?

How to Organize Special Two-Week Training Period with Expert Coach
I’m doing a two-week warm-weather vacation next February, and during those two weeks I have access to an amazing coach. During each week I’m there, I’m available four weekdays and one weekend day. Assuming that money’s no objection (big assumption!), how would you set it up. One-hour lesson per day? Two-hour lessons with rest days in between? Or any other advice you might have.
I’m thinking about 10 hours of paid lessons altogether.

Equipment Custom 9 layer blade
Almost all of my ping pong paddles are handmade by me. From balsa cores to carbon composite blades, I've made quite a few. Made some for friends and family.
This next blade I'm making I wanted to try something interesting. I like chopping and my play style is very defensive away from table, so I like willow (like Matsushita pro special). But I also like to loop back hard/surprise/counterattack or whatever you call it? Modern defense?
Willow 0.5mm
Fiberglass 0.1 - 0.2mm~
Hinoki 1mm
Carbon fiber 0.1 - 0.2mm~
Kiri core 2mm
Carbon fiber 0.1 - 0.2mm~
Hinoki 1mm
Fiberglass 0.1 - 0.2mm~
Willow 0.5mm
Will be roughly ~5.8mm in size probably after glue layers.
Rubbers will be hurricane 3 neo 2.15mm front and long pips feint long 2 1.1mm back.
Still thinking about what name to give this blade. I'll post pictures. Still waiting on the veneer orders.

Discussion How to deal with less spin-friendly balls?
Each tournament uses different balls and some balls have way less spin than others. For example the double fish balls. I encountered these balls quite often. The surface is less grippy. It's harder to impart spin. The ball loses spin during flight before impact. For spin oriented players it's terrible.
These are the consequences:
- Spinny serves become less effective and less reliable
- Slippage happens more on thin contact
- Spinny loops become less deadly
- Pushing tends to pop up more often
- Pips players struggling more, because more balls are dead
Which tactics do you use, if you have to play with those balls in competition?

Education/Coaching How exactly to receive different top spin serves?
I keep hearing different things from different people. Unfortunaly I dont have access to high level coaching in my area and people keep saying different things. Im just so confused at this point :DD maybe someone can outline most common situations
Topspin Serves
Short - early? On its peak? After the peak?
Half Long - early? On its peak? After the peak?
Long - early? On its peak? After the peak?
and blocking passively or creating my own spin on top of the incoming?

Building a beginner setup for my brother on TT11 (Neottec Gamma ALL+ ans Mercury II). Is Medium sponge OK or should I look for Soft?
I am currently putting together an order on tabletennis11 to take advantage of their volume discount. I want to build a solid and budget friendly setup for my brother, who is just starting and learning the basics.
Right now, I am looking at the neottec gamma all+ blade with yinhe mercury II max rubbers on both sides.
I noticed that tt11 only has the medium hardness version of the mercury II. I have seen a few people around recommending the soft version for beginners.
Does the hardness difference matter that much for a total beginner on this blade? Is the medium sponge still forgiving and soft enough to develop good technique, or is it worth tracking down the soft version elsewhere?

Boosting Misshap
Rushed a layer of Haifu Seamoon last night on battle two national blue sponge. This morning it looks a bit lumpy and odd, have I destroyed the rubber or does it just need a full twenty four hours to settle down before I glue it?

Buying Guide Rubbers
I've been using Yinhe Mars 2 with yinhe n9 and n11s for as long as i play, i would say i am just a tad bit better than average, what makes me shine is usually my serves and 3rd ball attacking, i play aggressive and my aim is to finish the point on backspin returns. (I dont know how else to describe my playstyle).
The main reason i am trying to switch is the Mars 2 rubbers spin feels dead to me as ive developed my technique and i want to experience something new with a lot of spin.
My good points are serving and starting the first attack or receiving serves, however i am bad at returning a counter smash to a top spin i have given, it might be about reaction time. My play-style is dependent on a spinny serve then waiting for the chance to top spin it.
Right now i'd say i am better than average, i play for a club and have won a couple local tournaments
On the blade i prioritize control and for it to be close to 86 grams and as i said in an offensive class, i can try getting used to almost anything of any hardness if it will help my attacks and serves.
