Meta I've been banned, why?

Good day everyone!

The mod team has noticed a drastic uptick in insult bot behavior in the sub. I understand reading can be difficult, but of our few rules in place the one that sees the most action is the no personal insults aka Rule 2.

We've been exceedingly lenient with reminders and a dash of warnings. However, the issue persists and pops up in site wide posts that draw in non regular users. Since this is kind of harshing the vibe we're temporarily pausing reminders and warnings and going into straight 7 day bans.

What does personal insult mean?

Any sort of insult directed at the user themselves in response to a comment.

What isn't a personal insult?

Insulting public figures, people not directly related to the conversation thread, etc.

For instance, you can say dems/republicans/breatharianism are idiots. If you're talking to a dem/republican/breatharianism you cannot call them an idiot.

Debate the position or policy, do not disparage the user.

Real Estate Seattle homebuyers hit the brakes - Seattle-area pending home sales fell 24.4% in September, the biggest drop among major U.S. metros

Buyers are walking away from homes in Seattle faster than in any other big U.S. city, new data shows. Seattle-area pending sales ... fell 24.4% in September compared with a year earlier, according to Redfin. That was the biggest drop among major U.S. metros.

Scheduled home showings fell nearly 13% across the Northwest Multiple Listing Service area, even as the number of homes for sale rose 24.5%.

~ Prices held up on the promise of endless tech hiring. That promise is the thing that broke.

Discussion Mayor Wilson to reveal new strategy to reduce homelessness

Thumbnail

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around Seattle's latest homelessness proposal. $37 MILLION to serve approximately 1,750 people annually. That's roughly $21,143 per person, or $1,762 per month! I understand that includes shelter, staffing, and support services, but here's my question: How many of these people will actually transition into permanent housing and become self-sufficient?

I'm all for helping people get back on their feet, but after years of spending millions upon millions addressing homelessness, taxpayers deserve more than another expensive program with promises attached. Where's the accountability? Where are the measurable results? Stop measuring success by how much money we spend or how many people we temporarily shelter. Start measuring it by how many people successfully escape homelessness and stay housed. That's what I'd call progress!

Thriving Elbows up in Washington state over Canada's proposed oil tanker terminal on border - 1 million barrels a day, two miles from waters where supertankers have been banned for nearly 50 years

As proposed, the pipeline will be capable of delivering up to 1 million barrels per day to a pair of supertanker berths located less than two miles from the maritime border with Washington. Supertankers have been banned from Washington's inland waters for nearly 50 years.

"A single spill of this highly toxic tar sands oil would poison the Salish Sea for generations because there is no technology in existence to recover tar sands oil once it hits the water," Swinomish Tribal Chairman Steve Edwards wrote.

~ The spill response plan stops at the border. The oil won't.

Does anyone believe this actual propaganda?

The government has out of control spending with limited to no real transparency. There is no admission on which programs have been "over budget", a term I never see used in WA politics.

So instead of admitting they overspend, and have no intention of reigning in spending one iota, they give a veiled ultimatum that important areas the public cares about will be cut if we don't approve the disingenuous, unconstitutional "millionaires" tax.

Another recent article tries an alternate angle reframe that passing the law will be a boon for charity and non-profits. These scum are really pulling out all the stops to guilt people into agreeing to a tax that WILL BE coming for them too.

It's a trick and there is no reason to believe different. The only way not passing the millionaires tax will impact child care funding is due to the fact they have already overspent. It's mismanagement.

What up with all the uncontested elections?

OK, "uncontested" is a poor word choice. I mean unopposed. Long ballot this go around. Of course I am making sure to do my homework and fully represent my own particular views when completing the ballot.

I was struck by the number of positions running unopposed. Seems much more than usual. My ballot has 27 elected positions on it, and fully 17 of them are unopposed. Including many judges.

I get that there are plenty of reasons that well-qualified people don't run for office. But it doesn't feel terribly healthy to have a slate of no choices.

Other than the world continuing to go insane is there a root cause anyone can put their finger on here?

Non-Tech SDEs, how long did it take you find your next job after leaving the company

I was an SDE2 with 4+ YOE for a non-tech F50 company but I recently got laid off. As everyone knows, the market is currently flooded with ex-big tech engineers, especially in Seattle. I've been applying to everything and while I feel like I'm qualified for a lot of these roles, its kind of hard to avoid feeling like I'll be passed over later on since companies will prefer the ex-big tech engineer, which I don't blame.

For people in a similar situation, how did you go about your job search? If you found a job and was able to switch industries, how did you manage that?

Politics Seattle City Council President, two Council members excoriate public commenter's "KKKettle" sign - "That is offensive to me on every goddam level"

Seattle City Council held a long public comment today, and then passed several bills, in a hearing that lasted until about 6. One of public commenters stood in the back of the room for most of the meeting with a sign that said "KKKETTLE, NO MORE COPS OR CAMERAS", and then had a friend hold it next to her while she delivered her public comment (I don't remember what she said; something about police and cameras, delivered at very high volume).

Just before the end of the meeting (and after the person with the sign had left), Council President Joy Hollingsworth said she thought the "KKKettle" sign was over the line and outside the bounds of polite public discourse (although under Council rules she didn't think it could be prohibited under the First Amendment). Council members Dionne Foster and Deborah Juarez added their own comments agreeing.

Hollingsworth had already noted the sign at a previous meeting, so she read from a statement that she had prepared (she had previously said she was "going to address this on October 20th" and presumably didn't know whether the person would be back with the same sign). Transcribing part of her statement here: "The Ku Klux Klan is something that shouldn't be referenced lightly in order to express your dissatisfaction. It represents violence, racial terror, threats and hatred directed at Black people and other communities of color, and it's part of this country's incredibly shameful history. And it's not just a part of our history, it's the current identity that continues to carry that trauma. And as we see different undertones within the country, some of this pain and terror have been coming back, that we've seen at the federal level. And so I don't take this lightly, just because you don't agree with someone, it's deeply offensive, and most importantly, it diminishes the trauma and suffering inflicted on generations of family. And I will be talking with that person individually about it."

[I'm not sure what she meant about talking to the person individually -- presumably waiting to see if the person comes to another City Council meeting, with or without the sign, and then approaching them before or after the meeting.]

Dionne Foster: "Every time I see that sign, I think about sitting in my childhood bedroom and watching cars circle my neighborhood in southern Virginia and flying confederate flags and me being afraid to leave the house. And that’s what I think every time I see that sign, in the back of the room and up at the dais."

Deborah Juarez: "I’m just gonna be blunt – I’m really tired of it, and I’m glad you said it. Those using our history and our trauma – our generational trauma – is just flat-out wrong and offensive. When you take our history of enslavement, genocide, [inaudible], incarceration, lynching, murder, forced assimilation, lack of humanity, forced sterilization, what many of our ancestors have endured and died for for us to be here today, for me to be here today, shame on you. This is our history not yours. STOP using our trauma, our violence to our bodies, our babies, as a prop, your actions flatten our collective struggle. It is a slogan without the struggle. You got the t-shirt, you read the book, but you didn’t endure it. And that is offensive to me on every goddam level."

(Transcribed from recordings I made with the GoPro. The official video of the City Council meeting should be on SeattleChannel.org and on the Seattle Channel YouTube channel tonight or tomorrow, and these remarks will be at the end. Earlier in the video, the sign will be visible at various times during public comment, when the camera is pointed at the audience.)
