(rant/question)
I want to clarify a little bit about myself before I type this. I am a chronic worrier, I worry about basically everything but I always am able to overcome it when the moment arises, I'm also extremely embarrased to post this but whatever. I am also extremely grateful for everything I have up to this point and extremely grateful to be at UW as a student in general. This rant is also a medium-sized summary of my situation and what is going on in my head, I have lots more to say to an advisor and/or counselor/therapist.
I'm a new transfer student this year (22yo) and majoring in Linguistics. The only linguistics related class I had taken previously was Linguistic Anthropology, which was what made me aware and interesting in Linguistics.
Now, I'm taking a phonetics class and a language class. My current path right now is loosely teaching english abroad, and I'm starting to think I misinterpreted my interests. I thought I'd be interested in everything linguistics...but this first class already makes coming to campus and do any work/studying tedious. I know it's only a few weeks into the quarter but I worry if it's because I don't like this specific class, or maybe I don't like Linguistics in general.
Part of why I question this is because back in community college, I took another anthropology class which I enjoyed, followed by a creative writing class that I enjoyed even more. I found myself incorportating things I learned in both anthropology classes into my writing.
When I applied to transfer, I chose linguistics because it felt safer? a more realistic option compared to Creative Writing that wouldn't sound as risky for my career choices to family, friends, and myself. At this point, I had already felt like I was inside a hydraulic press. My life choices being pressed down on me and my impending regret being the platform I was being squished into.
I felt behind in life, compared to friends who'd already graduated, and I was 2 years into community college with no real confidence in what I wanted to commit my career path towards.
I might feel differently about this after I get more bearings, but on top of my worry about interests, I worry that if I jump ship I might not even enjoy creative writing, or I commit to far into Linguistics that I can't turn back.
If you were to ask me what my dream was when I was younger, I'd have no answer. Ask me now, I think it would be super cool to be a writer. I hate that I'm realizing this now instead of five years ago and maybe I'll start doubting this decision too.
Now I feel like I've commited to Linguistics, with only two years left. I wonder if I might not even have the option to try switching my major, minoring in creative writing, or even being able to take electives in creative writing. It's a major with neither prerequisites I don't have nor a fully completed set of poems and story to apply with.
I know I could've and should've explored this stuff in community college, but there were no linguistics classes to take to tell me I might not truly like this...and I only took Creative Writing in my final quarter of community college.
I'm sure there has been plenty of posts like this and I apologize if this isn't something to post about...but all I'm asking is if anybody's been in this situation before and got out of it. I've seen posts from years ago but never any follow up. Is this something I can plausibly bring to an advisor or should I see a counselor/therapist first? Are there other resources that can help with this situation?
TL;DR: New transfer student who might've chosen the wrong major cuz it felt like a safer choice. Can I change my decision or should I try and get therapy to cope with my life now.
