Hey reptime
I've been a member here for many years, and have amassed a collection that you can see. I wanted to share a few lessons I've learnt while personally collecting to help those of you with a smaller collection, or even those of you looking to buy your first watch.
- buy what you like.
in this subreddit I often see people asking what they should buy next. The real answer here is nobody on this subreddit can answer that for you. People will often say you need 'some colour' (you can see i like monochrome), or 'a dress watch to be added', or even to add some arbitrary complication. The reality of the situation is you don't actually need any of that. over the years ive seen people with collections of just GMTs because they love GMTs, and you know what, fair enough. Buy what you like, not what you think will make a perfect collection to please others. Buying what you like makes your own collection yours.
- dont buy a loupe
in this game you always get what you pay for. if you're buying a chinatime special, it'll be bad, if you buy a $1K DDF black ceramic chrono, it'll be very good, but true experts will still be able to tell it apart through a loupe and through the movement. Why? well because you're paying 5-15% of the watch value for 80-95% of the 'same' product. Sometimes I even feel bad for TDs who have their stuff rejected because of minor imperfections that are unnoticeable on the wrist. If you need perfection, buy legit.
- dont trust social media & just use a TD
TDs don't need to advertise, we do that for them while posting reviews and through their service. We see on here people talking about social media vendors, and i wont lie, only at the end of last year I got caught out in a credit card/bitcoin instagram/telegram fake dealer scam trying to get a VSF at a fraction of the price. it happens. If it's too good to be true, it is. Learn from my mistake and the mistake of so many people who come on here saying the exact same thing & just use any of the TDs, my collection had been made using three of them which are all in the TD list.
- it's the person not the rehaut polish
lesson 1 says buy what you like, and lesson 2 says dont buy a loupe, those are valid - but if you're 18 and trying to flex the very same DDF Black Ceramic AP, nobody is going to beleive it's real when you're getting into your small starter car, or even the bus. I have a pretty good job where even if I downgraded and bought a $350-$400 superclone where there are alignment issues and a rusty rehaut, it would still be believable.
- complications are fun but not functional
As you can see, I live life on the edge and have a chronograph or two & the infamous 5712. It's true what everyone says, the more complicated the rep movement, the more that can go wrong. You can have the chrono for show, but don't use it on a daily basis or expect any level of genuine timekeeping long term from the chronograph function.
