With how strict the Eurocentric beauty standard is, I realize that I’ll never be conventionally attractive. Sometimes though, it’s just frustrating with how fatness is seen as something that makes one inherently unattractive no matter how pretty someone’s face is.
As I’ve learnt more about body neutrality, I think that it would be nice to live in a world where being ugly wasn’t something to be ashamed about, and it doesn’t mean that your features are “wrong” or “should be fixed”. Everyone deserves respect no matter how ugly or beautiful they are. However, we don’t live in that kind of world. Nobody wants to be considered ugly, and reasonably so. “Ugly” is not only used as an insult, but as a way to tell someone that the way they look is “bad”, they don’t deserve love or respect, and they should think less of themselves for it.
Sometimes, I just want to feel beautiful; like my appearance is valid. Even then though, I want to feel like my body is valid when it’s ugly or mid-looking as well. I just want to feel confident sometimes with my body and how I look, fatness and all. However, my desires clash with what I’m “supposed” to be. I’m supposed to only be ugly since I’m fat. Everyone knows that being fat lowers your score on the pretty scale. In addition, the majority of people genuinely think that fat = ugly.
How do we see our own selves as valid when everyone else does not?
