/r/plussize “Thanks But I’m Not Actually the Problem Here” Resource List

Help us build a resource list for people who want to read, watch, and listen more widely around fat acceptance, fat liberation, anti-fat bias, diet culture, and fat people's lived experience.

The point is not to help people become smaller. It's to collect work that treats fat people as actual human beings, and that names the social, medical, cultural, romantic, professional, and everyday pressures fat people are routinely forced to face.

A lot of this list is especially relevant to fat women, because so much anti-fatness is tangled up with misogyny. That said, fatphobia doesn't only affect women, and this list shouldn't be read as women-only.

Books to start with:

Lindy West's Shrill is funny, furious, and very readable.

Aubrey Gordon's What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat is probably the clearest modern introduction to anti-fat bias as a social issue rather than a personal failing

Her follow-up, "You Just Need to Lose Weight": And 19 Other Myths About Fat People, tackles the claims fat people hear constantly.

Virgie Tovar's You Have the Right to Remain Fat.

Sofie Hagen's Happy Fat and Jes Baker's Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls are also accessible entry points for people newer to fat acceptance.

History and politics:

Sabrina Strings' Fearing the Black Body explains how fatphobia is tied to race, gender, class, etc, rather than being simply about "health."

Sonya Renee Taylor's The Body Is Not an Apology is broader than fatness but useful for thinking about body-shame and hierarchy more generally.

Marilyn Wann's Fat! So? is older but historically important.

Charlotte Cooper's Fat Activism: A Radical Social Movement is valuable for understanding fat liberation as an actual movement.

DaShaun L. Harrison, Belly Of The Beast. Anti-fatness, anti-blackness and gender

Tigress Osborne, "Weight and Wisdom: Find Yourself in Fat History"

Podcasts:

Maintenance Phase is great for unpacking diet culture, wellness cons, BMI panic, and how health language gets used to boulster prejudice.

Virgie Tovar's Rebel Eaters Club.

Food Psych and Rethinking Wellness, both by Christy Harrison, anti-diet and wellness-culture critique.

Fierce Fatty by Vinny Welsby.

“Why Won’t You Date Me?” Nicole Byer

Weight For It by Ronald Young Jr (also worth a follow on socials)

The Body Trust Podcast.

Film and TV:

Your Fat Friend is a documentary about Aubrey Gordon, fat activism, family, and ordinary discrimination od fat people.

The Shrill TV series based on West's book.

My Mad Fat Diary, Dumplin', Real Women Have Curves, Patti Cake$.

Fiction, memoir etc:

Roxane Gay's Hunger is honest about trauma, body size, and safety.

Jennifer Weiner's Good in Bed was significant for centring a fat woman's romantic, sexual, and professional life.

Julie Murphy's Dumplin' is a great YA option.

Talia Hibbert's Get a Life, Chloe Brown

Olivia Dade's Spoiler Alert.

Nicole Byer’s book #VeryFat #VeryBrave is a photo series of her rocking her extensive bikini collection

Health without weight-loss framing:

Lindo Bacon's Health at Every Size.

Christy Harrison's Anti-Diet unpacks how wellness culture repackages diet culture.

Intuitive Eating by Tribole and Resch is the standard reference for eating without restriction.

Ragen Chastain's Weight and Healthcare newsletter is good for research and practical scripts.

Decolonizing Fitness (Ilya Parker) covers movement spaces that don't treat body-size reduction as the goal.

People worth following:

Aubrey Gordon, Virgie Tovar, Sabrina Strings, Sonya Renee Taylor, Jes Baker, Ragen Chastain, Jessamyn Stanley, Vinny Welsby, Tess Holliday, and Tess Royale Clancy.

Read/watched/heard anything that made you think, lifted you up, informed, empowered or inspired you?

Venting Broken Toilet seat #2 NSFW Spoiler

TW I guess for toilet talk? For insecurities? Mild suicidal ideation? (I'm fine, I am safe, I have a support system, just MDD things)

Guys I am so tired. I am so mad. I want to fall asleep and never wake up. I'm supposed to go on a trip next week when I normally get my therapy session. This happened today, and yesterday I had such a good session.

This is the second time I have broken a toilet seat. I'm 5'3, size 22-24 in women's. I want to say the last time it happened was a year ago, maybe more. It happened when wiping, I twist to move my legs to allow access for optimal cleaning. I feel the crack, like something was sitting under the seat and cracked with a muted sound. My mom says it's probably not because of my weight, but I don't believe her. She has a point; my father was 6'3 and lived life anywhere between 350-600 lbs, and didn't break toilet seats the way these two have broken, but he always bought cheap plastic ones. I'm only 275, but still larger than what a lot of things are built for. I specifically chose toilet seats that seem sturdy; they aren't cheap. I thought the first time it happened, it was just poor manufacturing, so I chose a different brand, and yet, here we are.

I'm not "Fat but healthy." I have health issues, and all of them either have a side effect of excess weight or the treatment causes weight gain. I try to do the things to feel better in my body. I've been trying to move more, but I keep getting cysts on my inner thighs (From ingrown hairs, I think. I need to see a derm, but money), making it hard to move around, which helps me feel better in my body.

I hate the mirror right now. I hate seeing my pants size. I hate seeing my legs. I hate how my stomach feels when it touches my legs. And now I hate using the bathroom, because I am scared I will break ANOTHER fucking toilet seat.

Guys, I am so scared of becoming someone who can't clean herself. I am so scared of going to the doctor and finding out that my health is worse. My knees hurt, my ankles hurt, my back hurts. I have been trying to build up muscle, break my sedentary lifestyle, but now there is this goddamned cyst or whatever the fuck on my inner thigh, making it painful to walk normally because the rubbing irritates it. I was okay with it as first, just seeing it as a typical thing that I would find a way to deal with, let it heal, and get back into things, but the fuckign toilet seat has set me back mentally so bad that everything I was dealing with, pushing past, now feels like the reason to stop trying.

I've spent several years working to ensure I no longer see being fat as a bad thing, to stop seeing being fat as a moral failing, but right now, it's hard to fight those thoughts. All I can think about is how painful it was to tell my partner (who is straight-sized) that I broke the toilet seat. I am so embarrassed. I feel disgusting. I feel like I deserve to be laughed at. I don't want anyone to see me; I don't want to be perceived.

I feel a bit better, but idk. Half tempted not to post this (esp. realizing the title is an unintended poop joke lol), but I still feel so alone in this. I'm the biggest person I know locally, so I feel so misunderstood.

Ugh

Discussion Y'all are gorgeous, and I hope you know it!

To all the plus-size girls out there, seriously, don’t waste your energy letting Tinder and all that dating app crap make you question your attractiveness.

Go out to a club sometime, dance a little, lock eyes with that cute guy you’ve been noticing. Trust me, some of us would absolutely melt if you made the first move.
I’m genuinely convinced so many of you don’t realize how ridiculously attractive you are. And if I could date every curvy girl I’ve ever had a crush on, I’d probably need a second lifetime 😂

Keep being gorgeous, ladies. ❤️

Discussion Where do you get your confidence from?

I’m plus size, have been my entire life. I love seeing pictures of you all stepping out of what my norm is and showing bellies and thighs in short skirts.

I’ve always thought I didn’t care what other people thought of me but deep down I guess I do because I can’t bring myself to show skin.

I have several pencil skirts and other short skirts Ive bought over the years with the hopes of wearing them but alas they still have tags on them hanging in the closet.

How to get that confidence when I’m my own worst enemy.

Fashion Discussion Plus sized underwear?

Hey y’all!

I was just wondering where a good place was to get underwear? Usually I just get Hane’s/fruit of the loom high cuts at Walmart, but these days the size 10’s just are fitting like I want after some weight gain and that’s as high as the sizes go there.

I like a full coverage high cut that’ll come over the belly button if that helps. Any input is much appreciated!

Health Knee Brace help!

I recently started a new job that has me on my feet a lot. My knee has been an issue since a car accident a few years ago, and obviously my weight doesn't help. So I decided to try a knee brace to get me through the day. I found one that fits, but I can't keep it up! My thighs are pretty big, so that makes my legs tapered. So no matter how tight I put it on, I take a few steps and it's down around my ankle. I've even tried a sleeve and the same thing happens.

Anyone got any suggestions on what to do about this?

Recommendations Affordable EV's for larger bodies

Hi folks. I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for an EV that is fat friendly. I am looking for something around $30k in the US (5ish years old is fine) that has comfortable seats for fat bodies. Anybody have one they love? Going to go test drive some things this weekend but I want to know what others feel comfortable in.

5'7" and size 3x-4x.

Fitness for health and wellbeing Athletic Wear: Compression Recs??

I’m looking for compression athletic wear. Could be a jumpsuit or leggings and tank top combo. I need my jiggly bits held snugly for exercise. Any suggestions? Mainly what I‘ve found is compression for smoothing under clothes but I need something that will keep me comfortable with jumping or running. A snug compression body suit would be preferable. Size 16 or 1x. Depends. Thank you!

Discussion Coming Back From Trip To Italy and Greece AMA

I know a lot of people on this subreddit expressed fear over going to Italy due to a viral fat shaming incident. My husband and I are on the plane back to the US from our two week trip, and I have a fear of flying so I thought it would do me good to answer any questions you have or about any fears.

For background, we were in Rome, Sicily, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Santorini, Mykonos, and Tuscany. My husband and I are both plus side, probably not mid sized but not super fat either.

Ask me anything about how the people were, chair situations, accommodations for tours, etc.

Health Knee Compression Sleeve for large thighs

Does anyone use a knee compression sleeve? I have short legs with large thighs. I got the CopperFit sleeve size XL at Costco and it is completely unwearable. I need something with a wide band that won't roll.

Discussion How do you feel content or proud of with your appearance no matter how conventionally attractive you are?

With how strict the Eurocentric beauty standard is, I realize that I’ll never be conventionally attractive. Sometimes though, it’s just frustrating with how fatness is seen as something that makes one inherently unattractive no matter how pretty someone’s face is.

As I’ve learnt more about body neutrality, I think that it would be nice to live in a world where being ugly wasn’t something to be ashamed about, and it doesn’t mean that your features are “wrong” or “should be fixed”. Everyone deserves respect no matter how ugly or beautiful they are. However, we don’t live in that kind of world. Nobody wants to be considered ugly, and reasonably so. “Ugly” is not only used as an insult, but as a way to tell someone that the way they look is “bad”, they don’t deserve love or respect, and they should think less of themselves for it.

Sometimes, I just want to feel beautiful; like my appearance is valid. Even then though, I want to feel like my body is valid when it’s ugly or mid-looking as well. I just want to feel confident sometimes with my body and how I look, fatness and all. However, my desires clash with what I’m “supposed” to be. I’m supposed to only be ugly since I’m fat. Everyone knows that being fat lowers your score on the pretty scale. In addition, the majority of people genuinely think that fat = ugly.

How do we see our own selves as valid when everyone else does not?

Recommendations Cargo pants

I work in a class for children with special needs, I need extremely durable and preferably a thicker material (denim/canvas) cargos for work.

I am curvy weighing in about 230 and 5’2, hourglass figure my waist is much smaller than my hips!

I prefer the look of men’s cargos (baggy, loose on the ankles, a little bit long) rather than women’s (tend to be skinnier/jogger style)

The more pockets the better

Anyone have any recommendations? I’m willing to buy men’s! But can’t find any that have my size with the baggy legs!

EDITED CUS I PUT THE WRONG HEIGHT LOL!

Discussion Fabletics scrubs

I am looking to revamp my work wardrobe. I am a nurse in a clinic and have lost 70 pounds after having cancer/diabetes/high blood pressure over past few years.

I am still in like a 22/24 depending on size. I am busty with a lower belly, hips, thighs and butt.

I am also trying to ball on a budget and scrubs got expensive af in the last few years.

Fabletics is offering sets for $15. I would love to get a budget option like that. But hear that you have to size up. The biggest size I see for the styles I am interested in are already kinda borderline.

Anyone have feedback? I could possibly skip the shirts and just get the pants.

Fashion Discussion NEED HELP FINDING. Looking for help finding pants for Major Formal Event (Talking Conference/Wedding Degree) Very High Waisted Pants

hey there. 26yo NB here, usually size 28wide womens in pants, and i... basically only wear really high waisted pants, like stuff that sits on my belly button at LEAST. Its my style, its what i'm known for, i even pair it with tucked in shirts, suspenders, cinched belts, even corsets sometimes. I love the whole look and we really made a mistake leaving them in the 70s.

Back when i was pretending to be a man, like, 10 years ago or so, it was as easy as going to a store like DXL and getting some REALLY nice plus size formal wear pants.

Here's the problem. Anything you'd find at old navy, torrid, stuff like that, its not "formal enough".
Its not a high enough formal-type fabric, if that makes sense? This is the type of fabric i wear every day, whereas i am looking for the stuff you would see on full fledged suits.

Where. Where can i find this. Help. Please.

Personal Advice for dating apps

Hiii I'm going to start this off by talking about me. I'm 30 weigh 300lbs and have never posted on here, even then I have no social media and have never used a dating app, never had a boyfriend never even held anyone's hand. I only hear negative things about dating apps but I have had 0 luck meeting anyone irl and I only hear bad things about dating apps honestly. I have such low self esteem and I'm scared to even start and just hoping for some pep talk or positive stories or how do I even go about it. Or if there are better places to meet people IRL?? I'm in Florida if that helps at all. I'm honestly scared to even start what are some positive stories or just good advice??

Thank you for any advice. And sorry if this post is all over the place

Recommendations Downstairs Sweat on Chairs

This has been a problem my entire life, but not much of an issue because it wasn't a musical chair situation.

Well... now I go to a monthly event and we circle through chairs multiple times in a couple hours time. I get up and see sweat stains of my cooch and booty. It is super embarrassing and I am mortified other ladies see it and they have no choice to sit on it. It is plastic chairs so imprints stay.

It doesn't matter how many layers. Today I had three! Undies, leggings and a skirt. It still went through all of that and I wasn't even sweating actively.

Is there any way to prevent this? 🫠

Fashion Discussion Is Victoria’s Secret plus sized friendly?

I have only purchased body spray from Victoria’s Secret. I keep seeing plus size women talk about their sequins collection. I love pink and everything sparkly. I just wonder how plus size friendly is Victoria’s Secret. Have any of you ever bought the clothing? I just bought a hoodie on clearance for 24.99. I was just wondering if any of you ladies have had any personal experience with the brand.
