I got the game like 3 weeks ago, finally finished it yesterday. First thing I wanna say is that I definitely liked the game, so the criticism that I'm going to talk about in this post shouldn't take away from the fact that my opinion on the game is still very much positive.
In order to explain what I disliked the most about Onimusha, I'll simply tell you how my experience went while playing the game.
I started and was immediately blown away by the technical compartment: animations, both fighting and facial are amazing, the combat is one of the most cinematic I've ever experienced and it really makes you feel like a badass, mc is also incredibly charismatic, which is rare these days (side characters are also nice!). The issue emerged when I kept doing a main mission, then going around eastern kyoto collecting dogs, doing side gigs and collecting crafting materials... I kept getting everything I could on the map, then played the main, mission, rinse and repeat. I soon found myself not feeling like playing the game as much as before, I couldn't really put my finger on it, since I was still feeling incredible while fighting bosses in main missions and following the story... and that's exactly the issue. This might be a hot take, but the whole "open world" in eastern kyoto is useless and the game would be a million times better if it was a linear experience. Imagine if they took the resources they used to build eastern kyoto and the shitton of pointless side content in it, and used them to make new main missions, new enemy types, new bosses, new weapons... imo, it would be a way better game.
I spent 3/4 of the game doing pretty much everything, then I realised I wasn't enjoying myself so what I did was simply ignore completely all the side content in the game and do only the main missions, one after the other.
It made the game SO MUCH BETTER and I finally started enjoying it again. Unfortunately tho, fighting normal enemies was just pretty boring in the end, main mission or not. Not enough enemy variety and most of them, by the end of the game, are just reskins of weaker versions. I understand a game, these days, needs to be worth it in terms of playtime in order to warrant the money spent, but I'd rather have a shorter, more varied and fun experience, than artificially lengthening the game "ubisoft style".
Main quest is amazing, but the rest (apart from some secondary quests) is very uninspired and boring, it's basically the same thing over and over again. It doesn't even feel satisfying to explore, since the best thing you'll find is a chest with some upgrade materials in it, how exciting. I don't think I even need to mention the 2 "rift bosses" and the overall recycling that gets more and more prominent towards the end of the game.
This issue, unfortunately, is also relevant for carnage mode, since I would have liked to fight the bosses again on a harder difficulty, yet I pretty much needed to get upgrade materials AGAIN in order to have a chance without going insane. What if I simply wanted to pretty much "boss rush" the carnage versions of the bosses? Can't do that, I have to collect the iron and leather, sorry. I understand part of this is my fault for focusing too much on exploration and secondary stuff in the first half but still, if you give me an open world I will explore it because I will logically think you put interesting stuff to discover here and there, else you wouldn't have even made it open world in the first place, right?
I stand by what I said, the game would be better without the open world section, just linear missions set in different levels (you could sprinkle the "big" secondary missions in there, those are the only worthwhile sidecontent in the game imo), with more resources allocated to enemy variety.

This question is for the people that have multiple console systems like me. Do you have Onimusha on PS5 and Xbox and if so which system do you prefer playing the game on? I also have the PS Portal and the ROG Xbox Ally X that I use frequently for my on the go gaming.

My biggest complaint about the game is probably the environment and how npcs and mobs are just…around. In Eastern Kyoto, I could walk past a handful of civilians just sitting around and going about there day as if they were going through hard times, but the danger wasn’t exactly immediate. THEN, I’ll walk 5 feet ahead and there’s a patrol of Gemma walking around. It’s almost like the Gemma and humans coexist in eastern Kyoto with how close they are together. The only times they aren’t are scripted civilian rescue encounters
Another small thing that irked me was something in Kiyomizu dear. I defeated Benkei first encounter and took an archery quest for kiyomizu dera where i encountered a byakue and several genma. Immediately after, i took another quest where I had to coincidentally go back to kiyomizu dera, but this time, there’s a bunch of people just hanging inside of the temple, when its seemingly been deserted ever since the beginning of the game. This stuff just breaks my immersion honestly, though I’m still enjoying the game

Hello Ive recently started way of the sword and am loving it!
Ive a question about graphics tho: animations look super good and the lighting is real nice but i feel like the textures up close, terrain especially, are very lacking in detail? Is that just my perception or do yall feel the same?
For reference im all maxed out on a high end pc with great performance, and yet the textures look significantly worse even compared to something like dawnwalker or kcd2. I really dont see why it would be using 13gigs of vram for this.
Am i missing something? Thanks!

I find myself wondering what trophy I might add to the game. It's low level, but kind of quirky, but I think something like Kintsugi King - Smash 5 (or 8) clay pots at once.
There's only a few places in the game where you see this many in one place and it would be a fun little seek and find.
What say you, Samurai?

I hadn’t planned on posting an obligatory post about beating Carnage. However after 3 runs and 147 hours in, I’m thrilled to have platinum it. Arguably one of the hardest games I’ve played in recent memory.
Contemplating doing a final run to really enjoy the Bishamon sword. I’m so glad to see the IP being revitalized and so well received.

Yoshitsune took me more than 12 hours total...Man but was it satisfying when it finally happened. Everything else were somewhat predictable, but I kept dying to his 3-part unblockable or the delayed grab, very frustrating. Then it finally clicked, the last run was smooth as butter. I am so going to enjoy killing his ahh for revenge in the rematch with this sword. How long did it take for you?

The temple occupied by these brothers was filled with EDM beats.
What’s more, Ifuu seems to have a rock-and-roll spirit.
Disappointingly, however, BGM during the duel is quite ordinary.
That is why I made this video.

So after playing 25 hours and Yoshitsune is still kicking my ass. I just noticed if you wait for the grab sound effect to finish, that’s the cue to dodge it.
I just tried it on a previous save with Ganryu and a Genma, seems pretty consistent. So if you’re struggling use the sound cue to know when to dodge.

These guys were a blast in action mode but in carnage mode they are a marathon of patience. They are super sturdy, what is the secret? Specially in the last third of the game.

For those who played both, which is harder for you?

This game is kind of everything I wanted Ghost of Tsushima to be and better. Damn I love this game! Onimusha and Sekiro are now my favorite character action Feudal Japan titles.
