A Guide To Micro-Fishing

Hi All,

So I figured it was time for someone to compile a list of useful links to help new micro-fishermen. There is some useful info on the sidebar, but I think having it as a stickied post might help people who wander onto this sub. If you want to add stuff to the list, just comment below and I can add it accordingly.

Question Getting through the bream.

Post image
27 Upvotes

I fish (and live) in Eastern Australia on the coast. The estuary fishing here is great and we have loads of great species to target, the most prolific being the yellow fin bream. Great fish to target, a lot of fun. HOWEVER, I am getting into micro fishing, I am targeting the many smaller species that live in our estuary rock walls, I see them, they show interest in my presentation but they are being outcompeted every time by bream. Sometimes very small bream, but some quite large.. I have tried very small curl tails (cut down) and more recently dough. I went out for and hour this evening and caught more bream than I have ever caught in such a short time. Most of them quite large (30cm+, 27cm is the legal limit, all released). The smaller bait I use, the bigger bream I am catching. I am using a 4lb leader, I have some lighter leader coming but I don’t want to go too light and get bust off by the bream bycatch. I have targeted them on 2lb line in the past and while it’s possible to land big bream on such light lines, fishing tight in rock walls on such light line, I would leave hooks in too many fish. Does anyone else micro fishing Australian estuaries and does anyone have any advice for getting past larger aggressive fish? Pic is my smallest bream so far ~10cm (caught on dough).

Question Is there any way to make the line more straight.

Or is that not necessary? I won't be fishing in very deep water and the bait will be lying on the bottom.

Here is my new, ready to fish set up (minus my hand made bait "syringe" and hand made tanago bait)! Went out with it for the first time today! Didn't catch anything as they were all too small in the area I was fishing, but they went for my bait! 🤙

120cm Rakutsuri rod with owner float rig and egg yolk/flour bait

My second and third ever fish on this rig, it was bottom end of the tide and a north wind made it very cold and lower low than usual. Hooked at the mouth of a cove on the Patuxent River in Maryland.

Didn’t bring the viewer box along, which I regret, but holding a set of calipers to my hand it appears the first fish is about 3.75cm and the second about 4cm. The pic of the rig is in between pics of each of the fish for distinction between the two.

I tuned the rig so the weight was an inch or so off the bottom, about 2’ deep above mud.

This is very exciting! I really want to catch a killifish or mummichog, but I’ll take whatever I can find!

I am not 100% sure on species ID, I just did a search with Google Image so if anyone has a different opinion please let me know

Question How do you store hooks tied with mono lines? I usually just toss them into a jar when I go fishing but the lines often get tangled. How do I prevent this?

NY gets little tropical fish every year because the Gulf stream pushes them in and they get stranded but unfortunately most of them do not get large enough to make the trip back. The sheepshead are a yearly resident though. We used to have large numbers of them years ago. NJ still gets a bunch of adults every year. These mangrove snappers are done for though when the water temps drop.

There was an army of needlefish today that were jumping out of ur water after anything you cast out

I saw a video on Japanese tanago about a week ago, dove deep, watched a bunch more and found a 120 off Amazon along with the owner micro rig with the pink float and sighted beads and lead sheet.

Made some bait with an egg yolk and flour and vanilla, put it in a small bag and clipped the corner, took it to my backyard dock on a shallow cove about an hour before high tide, and it worked!

I think it’s a threadfin shad. Approx 7cm
Middle patuxent river, MD USA

I’m hooked, this little guy made my heart skip a beat.

I’m trying to identify this fish species. I’ve checked with AI, and one says creek chub while the other says shiner. It looks much more similar to shiners I’ve caught before, but I’m not sure which kind it is. Thanks in advance!
