Hello everyone, I have a ASUS ROG Strix Scar 16 (2023) G634JZ with RTX 4080. I actually bought this and after like one or two months my guild in WoW Classic disbanded and I quit the game. After that, I didn't play any games with the computer, just used it for internet browsing, word, excel, chatgpt, etc. Since I have other PC's at my work, sometimes the laptop was not being used for a week.
However I am going to start playing WoW Forever so wanted to do some preparation. I actually never opened the laptop before and thought it needed a cleaning. I also saw some videos about liquid metals being pumped out, going bad (being crispy) and how it can destroy the laptop at some point.
That is why I just decided to remove it altogether and replace it with a phase changing pad. I used Thermal Grizzly PhaseSheet PTM and Thermal Grizzly Putty Advance. I bought Thermal Grizzly Shield as well but didn't need it so I just used it for the screw holes near the fans because I saw some videos about static electricity burning and shorting some laptops right next to those holes. I also bought some lint free swabs, lint free dry cleaning wipes. I also bought a Kapton tape and used it to mask around CPU and GPU in case of messing up and dropping something smeared with liquid metal to the motherboard.
When I opened the laptop, I saw that I was right about my concerns, a lot of liquid metal overflows and crusty completely solid surface on the GPU. Also you can see that there is an area in the middle of the CPU that has less material both on the chip and the heatsink.
I want to say that while I did open a few old laptops before and replaced thermal pastes, that is where my experience stops. I never built a pc for example, only used laptops. The cleaning process was actually hell. This liquid metal thing does NOT want to attach to anything. I spent so much time trying to get it off. I removed the sponge barrier attached to the heat sink because it actually had liquid metal absorbed in it that moved nearly to its outer edge. I actually tried to see if I could remove the orange shield around CPU and GPU but realized it was not coming off, so didn't try it further. Instead, I tried to push out the liquid metal that seeped inside the orange shield and try to remove it as much as possible. I also used a little bit of metal polish cream to clean the surface more deeply to get rid of the excess crusty metal, especially on the heatsink side. I think the end surface results are somewhat good.
After the long, tiring and bs cleaning process, I used the PTM that I had in the fridge for 1-2 hours. I actually measured the surfaces, cut small papers matching the surfaces and then put that on top of the PTM and cut it with scissors, it was pretty easy with minimal contact. Removing one side of the protection and putting it on the chip surfaces was easy but removing the other side was hard. The red tape part of this TG PhaseSheet PTM really sticks to the material. The clear part is removed much easily. I used tweezers during the whole thing. As you can see I had a tiny part got removed off the GPU and I tried my best to put a patch on it.
I also removed the old putty and placed new ones, you can see them in the pictures. This was my first time handling putty at all, my older laptops did not have anything like it since they were not high end. This was also really hard. That material just does not want to stay together or leave my gloves, it was a whole struggle. I now realize I was really stupid and put way way much actually, but I thought I was putting just a bit more than the videos I watched. I think this laptop uses way less putty than those videos because there were so much overflow happening. I am actually really worried that the putty is going to cause my heatsink not pressuring my gpu and cpu enough but we will see. I was just so tired that I did not want to remove the heatsink and do everything from the start.
I also did a general cleaning of the fans and everything else and was shocked to see the fans and heatsink fins were in a really good condition. They were never cleaned for 3 years but didn't really have much in them at all. I guess the mesh guard under the laptop really works, the whole case was really clean.
I downloaded FurMark 2.10.2 and used the "BENCHMARK Preset 2560x1440" option for both tests. There is a really big difference especially for the hotspot temp. You can see the results on the photos.
I also downloaded Geekbench 7 but the test before the removal didnt work for some reason, the website was not opening and I didn't really try it a few times. I wish I did but here is the after result, I don't know if it means anything.

This thing took my whole afternoon + evening today but hopefully it will be worth it.
