Budget: Around $3,000 USD, give or take a few hundred dollars.
Country: USA
Use Case: Primarily gaming and Python programming/machine learning.
I study machine learning, so having an NVIDIA GPU capable of training small-ish ML models locally is important to me.
For gaming, I mainly play games like Helldivers 2, Space Marine 2, Marvel Rivals, and Battlefield 6.
I also occasionally use FL Studio and Cubase for music production, although that's less of a priority, and I'm not sure I'll even install those on this laptop.
Preferred Specs / Form Factor:
- CPU: Preferably AMD
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 5080
- RAM: 32 GB minimum
- Storage: At least 1 TB SSD (ideally 2 TB if the price difference isn't too crazy)
- Screen Size: No strong preference
- Battery Life: Ideally something that can last a few hours doing basic tasks like coding, browsing, etc. I understand gaming laptops aren't known for great battery life, especially when gaming.
Portability Needs: A mix of desk use and portability. I expect to use it plugged in for gaming and more demanding workloads, but I'd like to be able to take it somewhere and use it for basic tasks without constantly needing an outlet.
Notes:
I'm currently considering the HP Omen Max 16, but I've been seeing quite a few negative opinions about HP in general and the Omen Max 16 specifically, which has made me reconsider. I'm curious whether those concerns are justified or if the Omen Max 16 is actually a solid option. It's on sale right now so it'll be a little over $3,000.
A few other things I'm particularly interested in:
- Battery Life: I know gaming laptops consume a lot of power, so I'm not expecting anything incredible. For reference, my old gaming laptop only lasts about 15–30 minutes unplugged, so pretty much anything would be an improvement lol. Ideally, I'd like decent battery life when doing lighter work like programming or browsing.
- Thermals/Cooling: How hot do modern gaming laptops get, particularly ones with an RTX 5080? I have an older laptop cooling stand, but I'm not sure how much laptop cooling has improved over the years. I'd prefer something with good thermal management.
- Upgradability: I don't necessarily plan on upgrading the laptop, but having the option to upgrade RAM or storage without too much hassle would be a nice bonus.
I'm open to other brands and models besides the Omen Max 16, especially if there are better options around my budget with similar specifications.
Would you recommend the Omen Max 16, or are there better alternatives I should be considering?
Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
