Discussion [MOD POST - PSA] We yell. We drink whisky. Sometimes we fish. WELCOME. Newcomers, start here.
You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.
But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.
Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....
- Search for "beginner"
- Search for "starter"
- Search for "waders"
- Noobie suggestions for first rod: freshwater / trout
- Noobie suggestions for first rod: saltwater
- Archived Mega noobie super thread of awesomeness
Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

Rainy day brookies
It rained most of the day, but the fishing was still excellent. We landed plenty of brookies, mostly on dry flies. Just a great day of hiking for brook trout in the rain.

Does anyone one know who tied and marketed these streamers
I met this fly tier in Maine on the rifle range off the Morton Cut Off near Rangeley twice. We chatted about shooting and fishing and got around to flies. I mentioned the Gray Wolf Flies, and he said that's me! I never got his name. I bought a bunch of his flies when they were under $3. Had good success with them.

Caught these beautiful trout
First time catching a brown and tiger trout and this rainbow trout had beautiful colors, buying a fly rod is one my top 5 best investments (Yes I did wet my hands before handling the fish)

I can see why you guys like this
Never considered fishing until I was invited on a guided trip on the Gunnison a few months ago. How typical is it for someone to fly fish for 4 hours and head straight to the local fly shop for their first set up? I imagine it’s not uncommon at all. Fast forward to last weekend, and I’m out on the Colorado headwaters first thing in morning - caught 8 browns/rainbows within about 45 minutes. Obviously my best day so far. Just wanted to say I can see how people get hooked. Any beginner etiquette/unspoken rule tips?

Found a flea market net.
Is this net within the current guidelines?

First time saltwater fly fishing
Have only ever done freshwater fly fishing, with the biggest fish on the fly prior to this being silvers and big bows in Alaska last year. What a blast it was targeting these bull reds only 50 minutes outside New Orleans. So much fun getting to site cast to big cruising red fish. I’m hooked and already wanting to book a Christmas Island or Belize trip!

Discussion Looking for info on flyfishing in Argentinian Patagonia 'backpacker' style
I know there is lots of information about 7-days packages for 5000 us$ and the category above that price level. But what i am looking for is information about a possible town as basecamp where i can stay for lets say less then 100 us$ per night and where i can rent a car to drive to (not to huge/wadable) rivers that are more or less closeby (2 - 3 hr drives max.). Looking for trout fishing in December (dry, nymph, streamer).
I realize this is a bit of a lazy question, so feel free not to respond if this is too lazy for you :)
In return (for other lazy bums) i can share similar info about Sweden, Norway, Slovenia, Finland and Italy

Fall swinging
The latest time of year I’ve fished Alaska. A little cold, and a little slow yet unbelievably beautiful and quiet. All of these were brought in on the swing.

Going Fishing
Going fly fishing for the second time ever. I’ll be going to the Eastern Sierras. Are these good options? In addition to these I’ll bring a couple steamers, a leech and a sculpin.
From the info I found on the internet I think these are it. But wondering if there is anything to add/remove.
Thanks 🤙🏼

Delaware State
Anyone ever fish northern Delaware state? I'm a newbie fisherman and wanted to start with fly fishing been in a few still water ponds but never hooked anything big. Fished white clay but no bites today was using midges and realized I need some strike indicators. Photo of the sun fish is from another day. All in all a great experience especially this time of year. Using a quest 4 rod 5wt

I have been fly fishing for roughly a year give or take, and recently found out about spey fishing. Anyone in here got any recommendations. I plan on targeting steelhead and walleye with it maybe bass.
