eBay INAD eBay sided with buyer despite agreeing with me on invalid return and telling me they’d cancel in favor of seller
As the title states, I sold an older camera “for parts or not working”. Similar listings sold for $7-9k years ago, listing was sitting stale for a year until a buyer comes with a $2k offer. Will I get an offer ever? I accepted.
Sept. 28 - item ships out
Oct. 2 - buyer opens INAD, citing that they opened the camera up and found corrosion on one of the HD-SDI ports (in the listing description HD-SDI was described as defective and needing servicing)
Oct. 2 - I speak with eBay phone support, they side with me verbally, though they instruct me to reply to the refund stating that “item is as described, for parts as is not working and the mention defect was stated in the ad”
EBay also tells me to open a case 5 days from the opening of this return case to ask eBay to step in.
They assure me on the phone that this is an invalid return, and that they made note of it in their system and that they must wait 5 days to make a case out of it. But they keep assuring that they will side with me.
Oct. 8 - Buyer beats me to it to escalate the case, again citing INAD
Oct. 8 - I call eBay again and speak with support, they tell me to accept the return and take the item back.
I told them about my previous phone call with them on Oct. 2, and that I was assured that this would be resolved favouring the seller.
Thus they said I do not have to return the item right away
They tell me that I can wait for the eBay resolution to see who they side with.
Oct. 15 - eBay sides with the buyer
Oct. 15 - I open an appeal
Oct. 16 - I lose appeal
Oct. 17 - I contact eBay to try to retrieve the item, cannot print shipping label within eBay. I’m told to print a 3rd party label and contact the buyer.
Years of reading INAD cases on eBay, I figured if it happened to me I wouldn’t care. But I guess it happening on a lowballed item really stung. And I’m also out $120 shipping and ~$250 fees.
I guess I came here to share my INAD story, as I’ve read about them forever. I thought I did everything to protect myself, but the lesson instilled is that: “Don’t list unless you’re prepared to lose it” or take the return no matter what and hope they don’t send you back a box of marbles..
