“What should I do in Dubuque?”

Let’s try something to see if we can get it stickied by a mod for the benefit of visitors who pop on here asking similar questions about food/bev, what to do, what to see, and all that when visiting Dubuque. I will start a category that lists my take on a subject with some keywords, and others can chime in with their experiences, reviews, other recs, etc. If the post has any lasting power, I’ll keep it updated as a lifer. I’ve kept the list of things you can ONLY find in Dubuque, so there are no chains and nothing outside of the general Dubuque city limits like the Field of Dreams or Galena stuff.

Donut brothers

Any idea when the new donut shop, donut brothers in the old Pizza Hut on university is opening? They don’t have a Facebook page or anything to my knowledge. Sincerely, a donut connoisseur.

Do you or know anyone that has had luck finding 55+ roommates?

My mom is 69 years old and is having trouble finding a senior apartment. We have talked to several, but it’s either no vacancy or it’s $950+. The housing voucher was not available for the month of October. She has never owned a home and just has her social security income. So I’m wondering if there’s any seniors that have had luck in Dubuque finding roommates and how did they find them. Thanks!

Wildwood apartments

edit : I did find the number for it & will be calling, last night I was just annoyed and embarrassed with the situation. Its through a company called ‘Patriot Properties’ , if anyone’s heard of that? I looked into Executive Management & Manders Properties, like some of you mentioned in comments, neither have this place on their websites.
Thank you for letting me know about Executive & Manders though, I will be looking there moving forward!

I’m apartment hunting in Dubuque , trying to relocate because of my job. Tonight I tried to go look at the wildwood apartments on wildwood dr off of 32nd & it told me there was a smart lock & gave me a code for a ‘self guided tour’ , I’m from a very small town- so this is all new to me but I’ve heard of places around here being owned by out of state companies so it made sense.
I for the life of me, unless I’m really just dumb (extremely possibly lol). I couldn’t get in; or figure out how to put in a code anywhere, there was only buzzers. No ‘smart lock’ as they stated & I even looked at the other half of the buildings door and I didn’t see one there either. Maybe I’m just blind & it didn’t even actually tell me what apartment it just said 2995 wildwood dr -1 so I assumed apt one & I buzzed the buzzer and thought someone spoke but I wasn’t sure & was nervous to respond, i didn’t wanna bother anyone 😅

Has anyone else experienced this? Did I go through a scam site by chance?? I’m so paranoid thinking everything is a scam, I’ve never had to pay for application either & around here that seems to be super normal??

Does anyone have any information about if Zoro’s on Central is going to open again? The signs in the window say closed July through September. Is the family doing okay?

I posted about this here couple days ago, but I think this opinion letter is a good summary of the feeling many in the community have about the donation from this business.

Also worth noting is that the TH has not published this opinion letter and that the Fullers are close friends with the Woodwards.

Mulgrew’s Chili Dog Recipe

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hi, Dubuquers!

I’m in Oregon, and my FIL grew up in Dubuque. He recently gave us all the tour and it included the famous footlong chili dog!

I’d like to recreate it at home for my FIL since he loves it so much. I know it’s a secret recipe, but does anyone have any hints at how to make the chili?

I’ve been looking up chili recipes from the 1950s Chicago area since I know it was inspired by a Chicago dog, but I figured a local might know better.

Thank you!!

Restaurants offering Thanksgiving meals?

I know this question is probably a touch early to ask, but does anyone know if any of the restaurants in town traditionally offer a Thanksgiving meal? Typically, I would make a holiday meal for my family but with a newborn plus another toddler in the house, I have been asked not to make a meal this year.

This is will probably be for 10-15 people. In the past, I know Brazen has offered and there is the Timmerman’s buffet, but I was curious if there are other restaurants I should keep an eye out for like Pepper Sprout or L. May?

Also, I have been told Hy-Vee is not an option.

Hi! I'm running a new community focused group on Facebook to help build a better community. Recently, in said group, I've met someone discussing a new community farm project to work on an agrohood. While I'm SUPER excited for the base concept of this project, I was wondering if anyone local had any questions or concerns about it, or if there's some active farmers or gardeners who understand some of the terminology being used I can potentially discuss this project with. I am neither a farmer or a gardener, and I admit that I do have concerns about the project even though I'm excited for it.

There's two screenshots in regards to the project. Could anyone elaborate further on these terms, and what they exactly mean?

(Yes, this relates directly to Dubuque as it is intended to be built within Dubuque).

The city seems to be on board as well, and on paper this project seems amazing, but with everything there are likely drawbacks. I'm currently in talks with the person heading said project and want to cover any hard hitting questions that are needed to ensure this project stays within the community's best interests.

Thanks in advance!

Blue “time to…” signs

Has anyone else noticed these new signs going up around time on Highway 20 by Theisens and over by the 3-way stop on Asbury/University. They aren’t working but they tell you the time it takes to get to “downtown” via the highway or university or “NWArterial” via Asbury or Pennsylvania routes? Kind of wondering what the point is

Title: Forming a basketball team of people in recovery to raise money for our city

I'm putting together a basketball team made up of people in, or who want to be in recovery from drug addiction. We'll practice, train, and play charity games to raise money for our city's fight against data centers.

I'm looking for 9 players who are or want to be clean and committed to staying that way. No experience needed. This is a team built on showing up, second chances, and proving what a group of people can do when they back each other.

Everyone joins voluntarily, nobody's story gets shared without their say-so, and we're working on partnering with a local recovery organization for support.

Also looking for a coach, a practice gym, and sponsors.

If you're in, comment or DM me with your name and a little about yourself.

I've never used, but I will not judge you

Recommendations for a New Family in Town

Hello,

My partner and I are moving to the area with our toddler. I'm curious about what kind of activities and groups are in the area.

A little about us:

For hobbies, I like hiking, kayaking, reading and writing, games (video and board games), crafts like crocheting and jewelry making, cooking, and gardening.

My partner also likes snowboarding, woodworking, and design.

We like live music and breweries. I also like cool coffee shops and wineries.

Any activities or groups that include this stuff would be cool.

Any activities that are toddler friendly in the area would also be cool.

Gross, expensive, and all the tables are crammed together in an old church. You can literally hear every one else's conversations, but you can't hear your date across the table. Server was rude and the drinks tasted like chemicals. 0/10

Looking for someone in Dubuque who could help my friend replace his brakes

My friend Justin has been doordashing for the last month to make ends meet and his brakes started squeaking a couple weeks ago. I suggested that he just replace them himself (it's fairly straightforward and youtube videos and all that) but he has a lot of anxiety about the whole process and does not want to risk screwing up, especially when he barely has enough money to cover the brakes and $20 for whoever can help. So I told him maybe I can find someone from his town on reddit to help him out. He doesn't use reddit so I'm reaching out on his behalf.

He says he's also willing to drive to you, wherever you are comfortable meeting. And again, he wants to give you something in return, $20, and I'd like to also offer $20 on top of that if you have cashapp or paypal. I've known Justin for about 2 years and if anyone needs a break it's him. I'd help him replace the brakes myself but I'm in Arizona and the most I can do is offer some extra cash on top of his 20. He could really use some help with this (and doubly so because he doesn't even have a jack anymore because someone stole it from his jeep a while back) so we're really hoping there's someone generous on here willing to help him out.

Thank you.

EDIT: u/barclata has offered to help, so huge thank you to them!

Smothering Angels - Metal band from Dubuque

Does anyone remember the metal band called Smothering Angels from Dubuque? They started out as 'nu metal' but later became heavier. I'm looking for any of their CDs, they released a couple albums and an EP. Did anyone here have their CDs or know where I could find one? I'm looking for them to archive them. Thank you, anything helps.

Wedding vendors in dbq

In need of rec’s of good wedding vendors. I’m not from the area or Iowa in general, so pretty clueless when it comes to knowing who’s good and who to avoid. I notice a lot of local vendors aren’t the best at advertising themselves- I’m seeing most vendors in my search from Des Moines. ISO: Catering, Photobooth, Photographer, Tux shop, Dress shop, Videographer, DJ

Iowa Time Bank Craft and Chat 7pm Oct 1

Hello!

Iowa Time Bank has recently started running virtual get-togethers for current and potential members! We wanted to make sure members of r/Dubuque were invited!

This is a great chance to ask questions about Iowa Time Bank, or get any technical help (The system can be buggy now and again) while showing off whatever your current work-in-progress is.

you can join using this link: https://meet.shorttech.online/craftandchatitb

If you would like more info about Iowa Time Bank generally, you can check out our website at www.RingsNetwork.org

Iowa Time Bank is a Time Bank. (Wow, crazy right?) It's a means for individuals to provide one-to-one mutual aid, or trade goods and services without money. It's intended to build trust and stability in communities during unstable times. Even though it has time in the name, you don't exclusively have to donate time, and you don't need to keep a positive balance. You can also offer and receive items, or lend out or borrow equipment. We currently have active exchanges in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, and are looking for enough interest to add more!

Current offers and requests that members have posted this month include:

  • Offer: help with outlets and minor electrical upgrades
  • Offer: multiple skeins of yarn
  • Want: help assembling a bed frame
  • Offer: home energy audit
  • Want: help with home organization
  • Want: dresser or TV stand
  • Offer: Water bath canner that can be borrowed

Furniture Moving and Storage

I found a place to live temporarily but it's a camper in a guy's garage. The landlord here is being cool giving me until the weekend to get everything out and said I could just leave anything I dont want and he would out it in the dumpster.

I have a nice couch and some other furniture that I would like to keep until I get a new place. Is there any place that isn't expensive and could help move it out? It's in an upstairs duplex. I can pay some but not a lot.

Any recommendations for a cheap storage place.

Can anyone help a girl out? This is all new to me.
