crawlspace picks for top shows tonight in the Twin Cities

  • Bauhaus Brew Labs - (Benefit for Pilllar Forum) BlueDriver, Doll Chaser, Time Room, Joe Bartel, Kyrie Nova & The Defiant [1:00p]
    • Help keep a neighborhood all ages music space standing while catching five Twin Cities acts on the Bauhaus patio. BlueDriver brings fuzzy, shout-along dance-punk; Doll Chaser adds politically charged punk; Time Room mixes angular riffs with danceable rhythms; Joe Bartel brings earnest folk-punk songwriting; and Kyrie Nova & The Defiant connects punk, grunge, and shoegaze. The afternoon supports Pilllar Forum’s unexpected damage and structural repairs, with a special Pilllar Drink Ticket Pilsner release.
  • 7th St Entry - (Slow Hang presents) Interlay, 12th House Sun, abalone [8:00p] [18+] Shoegaze / Alt-Rock / Trip-Hop
    • Chicago’s Interlay brings shoegaze with teeth: abrasive guitars, brooding atmosphere, and the confrontational energy of riot grrrl. Minneapolis’ 12th House Sun adds a melodic blend of emo, grunge, and shoegaze, while local trio abalone explores trip-hop through its debut EP, Machina.
  • Grumpy’s - (UnderCurrentMPLS presents CarlyFest) Hardcore Crayons, Hollow Boys, McVicker, Annie Sparrows, 4th Curtis, Monica LaPlante, Dosh, Butter Boys [1:00p] [21+] Art-Rock / Punk / Experimental
    • CarlyFest brings the Twin Cities music community together to celebrate Carly Olds, with eight acts spanning punk, garage rock, dreamy guitar music, and experimental grooves. The day includes Annie Sparrows’ deep Minneapolis punk roots, Monica LaPlante’s fuzzy garage hooks, Dosh’s inventive electronics, Hollow Boys’ gloom-pop, and Hardcore Crayons’ twisting instrumental rock. 4th Curtis, McVicker, and Butter Boys round out a bill built for discovery and community, with proceeds after event costs supporting ALS organizations.

If you care about your immigrant neighbors, let’s start with making sure someone who’s based half of her campaign on arresting and deporting them, and who supported metro surge, isn’t voted into office.

Seriously hope we get some nice winter weather. Sounds rough for us skiers… and outdoor skating has been lame these last few years.

Can someone explain the rise and fall of Falafel King?

This is the most random question ever. But when I was younger, I loved eating at the Falafel King. There was a location at Lyndale Ave. & Lake St. There was one in the skyway downtown. I think there were several branches out in the suburbs.

Fast forward, now there only seems to be one location left in an inconvenient strip mall in Bloomington.

Can anyone out there tell me what brought this kingdom down? Was there a falafel usurper or democratically-minded falafel-based revolution of some kind?

Urgently in need of lawyer experienced with vulnerable adult abuse (NOT elder abuse or nursing home/estate)
Also likely medical malpractice, but rooted in abuse and neglect of a vulnerable adult by caregiver.

Great selection of local hot sauce?

I’m hoping to buy a bunch of local hot sauces for gifts soon. Are there any stores that have a particularly good selection of local or other small-batch hot sauces?

Fridley Public Schools Finances

Post image
60 Upvotes

Fridley School District is currently spending about 8-9 million more dollars each year than they are bringing in. Last year they took out a loan of 9 million to pay their expenses. This year they just took out a 23 million dollar loan to pay their expenses, in the September board meeting. Their whole yearly budget is around 60 million. Moodys rated Fridley Public Schools as "junk bonds" category in their last report, and just recently dropped coverage on Fridley due to the 2024-2025 audit that has not been completed, along with other financial reasons. Lots of this information is available on their district website. You can see in the screenshot below their projected fund balance is projected to go to negative 40 million dollars in 2029. The superintendent has not made it clear what the plan is to get out of SOD. I have watched the school board meetings and read the notes on the agendas, I do not see a clear path forward without more borrowing. The superintendent has recently spent a ton of money trying to build level 4 special education programs and hired lots of people, these programs are very under enrolled with students and will exacerbate this scenario. What happens if a district continues to spend 8-10 millions dollars more than their revenues? Will Fridley be forced to merge with another district or file bankruptcy? Has this ever happened before? The superintendent and the school board are pretending like nothing is happening and everything is fine. The district also settled teacher contracts in the past 2 negotiation cycles for 5% yearly raises for the past 4 years. The district did not even attempt to negotiate with the teachers union.

We’ve already visited:

Northfield

Red Wing

Stillwater

Taylors Falls and Interstate State Park

Pinehaven Farm

Fawn Doe Rosa

Duluth (although it’s been a long time!)

We also have two dogs, so dog-friendly places would be a bonus, although we’re happy to leave them at home if needed.

We’re based in the Twin Cities area and are open to small towns, scenic drives, cute downtowns, farms, nature spots, unique attractions, or anywhere that makes for a fun family day out.

What are your favourite Minnesota day trips that you’d recommend? We’d love some ideas beyond the usual places!

Indoor places to read and mope in the evenings in Minneapolis (bonus points if it’s in/near Uptown)?

I’ve been in a mood lately and I haven’t read a physical book in a while. Can y’all recommend some quiet-ish places to get out of the house and read and maybe mope as the weather goes on to get worse?

Somewhere that’s open after 6pm please, I like to read on weekdays too. I already know libraries are a nice option, just looking for variety + something cozier than the walker library. I’d love if it’s somewhere in/near uptown that I can walk to in the fall, but I’d be open to a short drive if there’s decent parking.

Anyone else at The Hall Lofts concerned about EMBER taking over our amenities?

I currently live at The Hall Lofts in the North Loop, EMBER, a private social and wellness club, is planning to open in Spring 2027.
An article about the project came out on October 7th, and yesterday (October 14th), residents received an email from management explaining the changes.

According to the email, EMBER will be taking over the first three floors of the Newell building, which currently include the arcade, bowling alley, full size gym, sauna, steam room, locker rooms & showers, yoga room, and coworking spaces. These amenities will close once construction begins, which is expected within the next couple of months.

Management says a new resident fitness center will be built on the first floor of the Falk building, and that our other amenities, including the rooftop terrace, pool deck, lounges, and coworking cafe, will remain available.

Personally, I’m pretty disappointed by this. One of the things that made The Hall Lofts appealing to me was the amenities and shared spaces available to residents. Now, we’re losing several of those spaces, and I’m concerned that the overall living experience will change.

I’m also concerned about the potential impact of EMBER on the building. From what I understand, the club will offer a full-size gym and around 100 classes a week. Considering that residents already complain about the ongoing noise from the current gym and bowling alley, I’m curious how much more noise and activity this new club and lounge could bring. How will the residents that have apartments on the first 3 floors be affected? I also wonder how having a private club operating across the first three floors will affect building access, security, and the number of people coming in and out.

I know we don’t have all the details yet, but these are things I’d like to see addressed before construction begins.

Management mentioned offering residents 50% off the EMBER membership initiation fee and monthly dues. However, I don’t think an optional paid membership necessarily makes up for losing amenities we already had access to as residents.

I’m curious what other residents think. Am I overreacting, or are others concerned about these changes too? Do you think management is doing enough to make up for the amenities we’re losing?
I’d especially like to hear from other current residents, but I’m also interested in whether anyone has experienced something similar at another apartment building.
