Finding flexible work

I'm planning on moving to Minneapolis in the next 5 months. I want to start my own business at least restart my business. I'm a painting contractor and I'm looking for a flexible side job to start out with. I know it's very uncommon to find a job where you choose your own hours or the days that you work, but I thought I would ask anyways. When I have a job through my painting business, sometimes I need to work 7 days in a row and I don't want to have to only work certain days a week and turn a 7-Day job into a 3-week job because I have part-time work scheduled. I want a job where I can work 5 days a week if I want or not at all, where the work is there when I need it. That would be very ideal but I know it's not super likely.

Moving in 1-2 years

I’m a teacher from a small cow town south of Boston, 25 years old, looking to move to Minnesota from what started as a joke. I want something new and would love if anyone could give me some insight on the teaching job market for music education and possibly some recommendations for suburbs of the twin cities that are welcoming to younger people with apartments to rent.

Moving in 1-2 years

Hello! I'm planning on moving to MLPS from Houston in ~1-2 years. This would be a major change. I'd like to live somewhere with high walkability, as I'd like to no longer drive. I'm big on community/volunteering and I have some nerdy hobbies like playing TTRPGs and being part of a book club. I also like to stay active. I plan on taking a flight to DFW to see my family every few months.

I'm staying in St. Paul for a month around the winter carnival to see if I can handle the winter.

Is it realistic to expect that I could live without a vehicle in this area? I'd like to rent a 2br space. What kind of costs could I expect? Are there any financial surprises coming from TX that I'll be blind to?

I'd like to know the likeliness of me finding a place to live

I already know the best places to check is probably Facebook from independent owners. What's the likeliness of me finding a place to live? I would have a decent chunk of change saved up, moving with two adults, three kids and a dog. I'm probably going to want to restart my painting business, I paint houses. What is the likeliness of me actually finding a place? I won't have work history in the area. Also I recently destroyed my credit while traveling for medical reasons, used to have a perfect credit score and now it is not doing so hot. I don't have any references as well because I've never lived on my own without my folks support. I would probably have around 20K in the bank after I buy my car

Where should we live? Coming to Minneapolis from Iowa. We are in our early 60’s. Our son lives in Northeast Minneapolis and we do not want to be more than 30 minutes from him. We are very active and want to remain so. My husband also loves golf. We would love neighborhood recommendations.

Neighborhood Recs

Hello! I’m searching for apartments and wanted some input from the locals that know what’s up. I’m looking in the North Loop, Uptown, and Marcy Holmes neighborhoods. Just wondering if these are safe parts of town. Also, how transit around the city is from these neighborhoods because I won’t have a car. At least not at first. Are there any buildings to stay away from in those neighborhoods? It’s hard to tell when reading reviews. Are these good neighborhoods for a 41 year old single person that likes to go out and have fun but too tired to stay out late? šŸ˜‚

Moving Portland Oregon to Minneapolis

Wanted to see if anyone made this move recently and if they like their choice. We are looking for better schools for our kids in the suburbs, better job options…one of us an engineer and other a nurse. Not afraid of the weather used to live in Chicago and Toronto so somewhat know what we are up against. Just want to see how people liked or didn’t like their west coast to Midwest move…thanks!

Need advice on living situation

I know my living situation is of my own making; I’m 22 years old and still live with my parents. In fact, on paper I have it really good; they don’t charge me rent or anything - I pay for my own bills. I have/am trying to come to terms with the fact that this isn’t healthy; my friends are calling it abusive, but I think that’s extreme. I’m being berated and threatened constantly, and I feel like I have to defend myself constantly. In their defense, I am 22, and I’m not the best roommate; I’m admittedly not the cleanest when it comes to my room (I’m working on it) and sometimes fall behind on my chores. It used to be worse physically but now it’s almost entirely verbal, emotional, and physiological. I don’t want to air out my dirty laundry too much but I feel like if I don’t get out soon I will die, if not physically then mentally. I would love to be able to afford to move out but I am currently not making a lot of money as I’m going to school and every job near me thats hiring is paying close to minimum and doesn’t like my hours of availability but I have an interview coming up and I hope that it will pay close to $1000 a month - hopefully more. Rents high as well and back when I could afford that my parents told me they didn’t want me to move out. Almost everyone looking for roommates wants $800 - I have found cheaper ones but they seem a little suspicious, and can’t take cats, but maybe I’ll just have to leave them. I guess I’m asking if anyone knows any resource in Minnesota? Either good resource to help with rent and/or apartments that take those resources? Thank you so much for even reading this. I hope you have a great day!

Trying to move out...

Hello, I'm 20 and looking to move back to Minneapolis.

For context, I moved out when I was 19 into a really shitty apartment without being prepared at all for adulthood. As a result, I couldn't pay rent on time and later got evicted and then moved back in with my parents back in March.

I understand that I made a huge mistake but since then I've gotten a job and have been saving up. I'm wanting to move at the end of the year and or in January... though, I'm having difficulty trying to find a place that will accept me with a somewhat recent eviction notice. Also, my budget is on the lower end, about $900/month is at most what I can pay.

Overall, I'm not exactly sure what to do, but I'm very desperate to move out-- especially in an area that is closer to the art scene. If anyone has recommendations and advice, please let me know!!

Moving suggestions needed

I’m moving to MN next month for a job transfer and I am seeking a good, safe to live. I prefer a private landlord but it is not a dealbreaker. I’m at least 2 bedroom and 1.5 bath with in-unit washer/dryer and A/C unit. Budget is $1800 max for rent. I’m open to any suggestions in the twin cities or surrounding areas even though my job will be in St. Paul. Thanks in advance for all of your recommendations.

Planning my move next year from Texas

I’m planning on moving to the area next year to escape the Texas heat. Yes I know how cold it can get in Minneapolis, hence why I’m moving there! I’m planning on changing careers and going to school to become a nurse. I’m wondering what peoples monthly expenses are from low to high. So I can start planning my own budget and figure out the lowest I can make a month. So please let me know what your rent to all your bills and food expenses are. I do have two dogs so I’ll need to know if your rent is more expensive due to having pets. Please and thank you. I’m not planning on moving until probably next September.

ETA: I’m a 40 yo, widower who has no desire for roommates. My late husband and I would have celebrated 16 years this month. So I’m looking for a 1/1 or preferably a studio. All of my family will stay in Texas(thankfully) so no need to worry about guests.

ETA: I will have very little debt. My credit cards will be paid off, my personal loan will be paid off. My car is already paid for. I unfortunately have Verizon as my carrier. Just not ready to let go our plan we had together. So when I move up I’ll be either debt free or have very little debt.

Chicago Native Turned Minnesotan – Happy to Help Anyone Navigating the MN Housing Market!

Hey everyone!

Wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and hopefully connect with some people in this community!

I'm originally from Chicago but have called Minnesota home for nearly a decade now. I originally made my way up here through hockey and ended up falling in love with everything Minnesota has to offer (although I'm still adjusting to some of these winters šŸ˜‚).

I spent 7 years coaching junior hockey here in Minnesota and still stay heavily involved in the hockey community as a skills coach for a junior hockey team in Central Minnesota, along with working with local youth hockey associations.

Outside of hockey, I'm also a licensed real estate agent here in Minnesota, helping people navigate the process of buying and selling residential properties.

Having made the move from another state myself, I understand how overwhelming relocating can feel, especially when you're unfamiliar with the different communities, housing markets, and everything else that comes with making a move.

Whether you're relocating to Minnesota, moving within the Twin Cities, looking to purchase your first home, or thinking about selling, I'm always happy to be a resource.

I'm not here to flood the page with listings or sales pitches. I genuinely enjoy connecting with people, answering questions, and helping others get familiar with the state I've come to call home.

If anyone has questions about Minnesota real estate, the buying or selling process, or even just wants some insight into different areas, feel free to comment or shoot me a message!

Looking forward to connecting with more people in the community!

šŸ” **Looking for a Female Roommate!** 🐾

Hi everyone! I'm 26F, moving to Minnesota for work, and looking for a female roommate to sign a lease with!

I've already found a couple of nice **2 bed, 2 bath apartments** in **Anoka, Champlin, Ramsey, Coon Rapids, and Blaine**, so we'd each have our own bedroom and private bathroom.

I'm hoping to move in by **October 21st**, so I'm looking to finalize something soon!

I also have a sweet, friendly 60-lb dog šŸ¶ā¤ļø, so you'd need to be comfortable living with a dog.

Looking for someone clean, respectful, and easygoing to share a cozy home with!

**Females only, please!** Feel free to DM me if you're interested! 😊

Moving Advice

Hello! I apologize in advance if this is a repetitive question or boring for you all to answer by now. Just looking for some help from people that know the Twin Cities.

A bit about me: I’m 41, single, LGBTQ. I’ve been struggling to find my path in life and career wise. I enjoy anything artsy and creative. Love going to museums, film, theater, symphony, and concerts. I love all types of music but especially alternative, punk, and indie. I love watching soccer games although I’m a Seattle Sounders fan. I struggle a bit with anxiety/depression, maybe TMI lol! I can be shy at first and once I’m comfortable with you I love get more chatty and outgoing. I like reading and would love to find a book club. I’m currently living in Michigan near Elkhart , Indiana with my parents in this transition period. So obviously looking to move out soon.

My questions:
1. When is a good time to move? I know it’s almost winter. Like I said, I’m living with my parents and SUPER ready to be on my own and independent again.
2. Looking for recommendations on neighborhoods in either Minneapolis or St Paul, whichever you think fits my vibe. Love independent coffee shops close enough to walk to. Budget is flexible, prefer a more modern apartment with laundry in unit and central heating/AC. Would love to try and keep rent manageable so let’s say under $1700. Looking for safer neighborhoods as I’ve read crime is on the rise in the area.
3. Advice/Mentorship on careers as I am working on a career path into marketing. Would need entry level as I only have a google certification in digital marketing. BA in Telecommunications w/ minor in music.

Thanks in advance! Happy to start making connections for career or friends. Appreciate you all!

Things to Do Before I Move Away

Howdy! I've been living in the area for the last year but I haven't had much time to do any 'classic' Twin Cities things, and don't even really know what they'd be! I of course visited MOA and have done some random things here and there, but I'm looking for things anyone would consider requirements to do before I move away later this fall for a job change. Looking to use my extra free time coming up to finally experience those things, so let me know, thanks!

Open to all obvious answers and also niche ones. I'm in the SLP area but am able to get around!
