Rebecca Cooke says Trump’s tariff policies are hurting Wisconsin farmers: "Farmers don't want handouts on the back end because of poor decision making in Washington. They want good marketplaces to be able to sell their goods to the world and to feed the world."

THE WELKIN Continues Performances at UWL This Weekend
Hi everyone -- I teach in UWL's Department of Theatre & Dance and we've got a killer show running this weekend. It's the first time it's been produced in the region and the performances are stellar. UWL Theatre & Dance has the cheapest theatre tickets in town but we deliver high quality productions. Happy to answer questions! Thanks, as always, for letting me post here and share the word about the shows we're bringing to our community!
Our first show of the season is a new play called The Welkin: imagine 12 Angry Men + The Crucible but feminist and funnier! Highly recommend, especially, if you're into true crime, courtroom drama, and/or history!
Set in England, 1759, a woman has committed a murder. Upon receiving the death penalty, she claims to be pregnant. If true, it would spare her the noose. What they actually, historically would have done back then is assemble a jury of mothers to determine if she's telling the truth. The play dramatizes these deliberation in what becomes a gripping examination of power, privilege, and the silenced voices of women, as each juror’s own history, hardship, and beliefs shape the verdict. Tense, surprising, and darkly funny, The Welkin asks urgent questions about who gets to decide truth, whose lives are valued, and how personal experience becomes political.
For Mature Audiences.

Birthday Dinner
Does anybody around know of any good spots for a birthday dinner? Some family is coming to town and we're planning on going out for my birthday.
Nothing extravagant but nothing really "divey".. I love Bodega, but kind of looking to go somewhere a little nicer. Originally was thinking Outback Steakhouse, but now I'm thinking I might want to go somewhere more local. And anywhere with gender-neutral bathrooms is a plus too.

Game 1 Brewers Watch Party
Besides the local bars, is there anywhere else a watch party is going on? It’ll be me and a 9 year old. I don’t have a problem bringing him to a sports bar or something but I was thinking maybe the Rivoli (which they aren’t) or something similar would host a bigger watch party.

Question about train noise.
I plan on moving to La Crosse next year. I keep an eye on La Crosse real estate listings. A really nice house has been on the market for two months now and I'm wondering why it hasn't sold. It's on Madison Place, East of Losey Blvd. I see it backs to train tracks. Are those tracks active? If so, do they see frequent, noisy traffic? Here is the listing. https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/2555-Madison-Pl_La-Crosse_WI_54601_M81637-70389

What are the spinning things on Kwik Trip?
There is some kind of spinning, mirrored contraptions on the top of the structure over the gas pumps on the Kwik Trip on Hwy35 on the north side of La Crosse by Walgreens. What are they for? I have never seen them in other KTs…?

City work on sewer lines?
I read a comment on a LaX Trib story that mentioned, as an aside, "homeowners who just had raw sewage pumped into their homes by crews that don't know how to handle the city owned equipment," and now I'm scared! They are working on my street and it'll probably happen this week. I should have asked more questions when they came into my house to figure out where the line is a few weeks ago, but I didn't. Does anyone know more about this? And are there any precautions to be taken? Yikes!

No Kings Oct 17
Hello folks!
A few notes about the upcoming visibility event for today:
We will be gathering at our usual spot in front of the K-Mart building off of State Rd and Losey Blvd. The address is located at 2415 State Rd, La Crosse, WI, 54601. The visibility event will be from 12pm to 2pm. We are advising everyone to carpool, bike, walk or bus (buses #2 and 4 will get you right to the spot). We encourage everyone to have a plan for arrival and departure and to not park in the K-mart lot.
Prior to the event, make sure to take medications, nourish your body, grab a refillable water bottle, dress for the weather, and come up with a buddy system.
During the event the Dems office will be open for bathrooming, first aid and breaks. If there are counter protestors, please try to remain calm, ignore, distract or de-escalate any situations. In the event you need assistance or have questions, Indivisible team members will be identifiable by their yellow safety vests. Donations can be dropped off in front of the Luxury Nail and Skin Salon, the Dems office or at the table in front of Dominos. A reminder that we are collecting winter items for WINN and YAB. These items can be new or used. Items include: blankets, coats, gloves, mittens and non-perishable snacks and food items that can be readily eaten with little preparation or the need of household appliances. Please also do your best to not block the view of traffic and stand about 6 feet from the curb (this is for the safety of participants and drivers).
Please refrain from parking in the K-Mart lot, as you will be at risk of being towed at your own expense. Please also refrain from parking in the Luxury Nail Salon or JavaVino and refrain from blocking the entrances and exit as they still will be open for business to the public and be sure to show them thanks and support their businesses.
About 1:45 pm, we will begin encouraging people to collect their belongings and implement their departure plans.
The theme for this No Kings is GET OUT THE VOTE and we encourage signage to reflect this. We want everyone to have a plan on getting to the polls and be informed on the candidates and their issues. This information will be available at the Dems office and at the table near Dominos. There will also be sign up sheets to volunteer to help with transportation; canvassing on candidates and issues; and ballot buddies for those who are uncomfortable about going by themselves to the polls.
Please feel free to sign up and share on your socials and continue to look for updates on our website or email us for additional information!

Places to visit this weekend to feel the "vibe" of the area
Hi late 30s/early 40s child free couple interested in moving to the La Crosse area. We are taking a trip this weekend to check out the area. My husband and I currently live in Chicago and are desperate to leave the big city. I work a Territory Sales job so I have been to the area several times, he has not. Things that are drawing me to the area:
-Nature-I am an avid hiker, biker, kayaker and camper. I am looking for an area with some elevation as I like to hike out west.
-We are looking to escape the city. We don't need a walkable town or trendy restaurants. We have lived in Chicago for 20+ years and are looking for smaller towns/less congestion.
-He is an artist. I am more nature focused.
-He is black and I am white. Any interracial couples willing to share any experiences (positive or negative)
-We play pickleball!
Where should we go this weekend to see the good, bad and ugly? Open to all restaurant, outdoor or artsy recommendations. We really just want to get a feel for the vibe of the area.
Things I am concerned about:
-job opportunities: I am in sales, he is a freelance artist who also works in restaurants. I could keep my current job if we move.
-How is life for a person of color? I want my husband to be comfortable.
-How hard is it to find your community. We don't have children so I worry there may not be a lot of adults our age in the area looking for friends (without kids). We are not anti kids but obviously live a different lifestyle than people with children. Just looking for some perspective on this as none of my friends in Chicago have children.
Any suggestions/ recommendations/ feedback are appreciated!

I met a beautiful soul...
I walk dogs and spend time with them for doggy day out at the Coulee Humane Society. And honestly, all the dogs are wonderful. Every now and then I come across one that I just know is ready for that special someone, if only I could find the person who is looking for her.
This little girl is one of those dogs. Right now her name is Milli but that was just given to her for now. She is not even responding to it.
What is so special about her? I am a single woman who lives alone, and I am not allowed to have dogs at my apartment. So I walk them to have fun and help them have a good day.
I always try to give them the best day. Every now and again, a dog gives ME the absolute best day. I love cuddling with gentle souls who like to be connected, but also understand personal space. For example, Millie gently rested her chin on me while I was driving out to where I took her hiking. She could have laid in back enjoying the luscious pile of pillows I put out for her. But she preferred to maintain a physical connection in a VERY SWEET and PRECIOUS way.
When we arrived, she let it be known she had serious zoomies. Thanks to the surroundings being enclosed by natural barriers, I was able to let her get all the zoomies she needed. And she was awesome. She always made sure I was aware of where she was. If I said "come here" she came running back at top speed to show off how fast she can run and how she was still paying attention to me and had no intentions of letting me out of her sight. We made a little game of it where she ducked behind the tree stump and then I whispered "come here honey bunny" and she came barreling towards me so fast she ran slightly past and then came in for hugs and pets. All I had to do was say "come here my good girl" and she was so happy to show me how attentive she is.
After she got the zoomies out of her, we walked on the trail as if we had been doing it every day of her life. She was so sweet. She always made sure to sit down next to me and enjoy belly rubs when I needed to rest. And she was just so happy to show me she is a super loyal, super loving, attentive, and very intelligent little girl.
If you are like me where you want a dog to be your sweet little honey bunny and a ride or die, someone you want to care and love, who will show you attentive, unconditional love, and who you are ready to bond with for the rest of your life, this is your special girl.
She is the type of dog that will grow your heart bigger than you ever imagined it could be. She does have needs. For example, there was an old beagle (smaller and less energy than her) who Millie really wanted to be friends with, but she played to rough with that dog. I think she needs more socialization with small dogs. Also, she was jealous and didnt want that little dog getting any pets from me. She decided that we were a pair and she was not going to let that little beagle usurp er position as the "good girl."
I would not recommend with cats. (i dont know about the cat thing, but she was rough with the little dog, so Id be cautious about cats. Millie did seem to understand "be nice" as a command for her behavior.)
I would only recommend with another dog if you foster to adopt first and see if she can adjust. Putting her in a situation where she needs to compete for attention will not be a good thing for her. However, sometimes this is an abandonment trauma reaction, so with time she might change. Honestly, I hope with time it does change because I think she would be happy with siblings. But if forced on her, I dont know how that would work out.
Like most dogs, she needs to get out for zoomies. She's young and needs to run. No way around that. And, she needs someone who has the time and desire to lay around and give her lots of cuddles.
Oh! And she did not seem to shed. I dont know how it is at the end of winter, but I was wearing a sweatshirt and we cuddled a lot and she did not leave any hairs on me. How awesome is that!!
