Politics/Elections We're Planet Detroit journalists covering Michigan's 2026 election and the environmental issues affecting Metro Detroit. Ask us anything!
Hey r/Detroit!
We're the journalists behind Planet Detroit, an independent nonprofit newsroom covering the environment, climate, and public health in Detroit and across Michigan.
With the Nov. 3 election approaching, we've been digging into where candidates stand on the issues affecting our communities, including air pollution, water quality, sky-high energy bills, data centers and climate policy.
We've also created a nonpartisan 2026 Environmental Voter Guide to help Michigan voters learn more about their candidates, explore their positions on environmental issues, review voting records, and see who's funding their campaigns.
Now we want to hear from you!
Ask us about air pollution in Southwest Detroit, neighborhood flooding, rising DTE bills, water quality, urban agriculture and more. How might the races for governor, U.S. Senate, and the Michigan Legislature shape environmental policy in Detroit and across Southeast Michigan? What have we learned about the candidates, their records, and who's funding their campaigns?
We're happy to talk about all of it, including what surprised us while reporting this guide and what questions candidates still haven't answered.
We'll be answering questions tomorrow, Monday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET.
We're posting early so you can start submitting questions now. Members of our reporting team will join the conversation tomorrow. Click here for an AMA pic from Founder and Executive Editor Nina Ignaczak and Managing Editor Dustin Blitchok.
Thanks to the r/Detroit moderators for having us. Looking forward to your questions!
Joining us here today are:
Nina Ignaczak, Founder and Executive Editor of the Planet Detroit newsroom. Nina had 15 years experience as a planner in Oakland County before launching Planet Detroit, one of America's first local news startups focusing on the environment, climate solutions, environmental justice and public health.
Dustin Blitchok: Managing Editor of Planet Detroit.
Brian Allnutt: Reporter for Planet Detroit and the Michigan Press Association's 2025 Journalist of the Year

News RIP: Tom Skerritt, well-known actor and Detroit native
So many enjoyable film projects he was a part of over the years. Super-legendary for his role in Alien and Top Gun.
Tom Skerritt dead: ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Picket Fences’ star was 93
Tom Skerritt, the veteran actor who appeared in seminal films like Top Gun and popular TV shows like Picket Fences, died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 93.
His family announced the news in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, adding that they were “heartbroken” by the loss.
Skerritt was “a loving husband to Julie; father to Andy, Erin, Matt, Collin, and Emiko; grandfather to Sara, Maddison, Sunny, Louisa, and Georgia; and great-grandfather to Marigold and Ravi,” the statement said.
“While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives,” the family continued. “He cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world, and helping others find and share their own voices. We are incredibly grateful for the love and support being shown by his friends, colleagues, and fans.”
The news article gets his birthdate way wrong, though (copy editors!)

Community Bathroom remodel?
I'm in the metro area looking to have my small 1970s bathroom gutted and replaced with a walk-in shower. Any good companies or contractors you can recommend? Not interested in fancy or luxury, just reliabity and fair prices. Also curious what anyone one out there has paid for similar work...

There's the World's Largest Weathervane in Montague, Michigan and the World's Largest Cherry Pie Pan in Traverse City. If Detroit were to come up with a world's largest object, what would the best thing to represent us?

Community UniverSoul Circus in Detroit
I think this production company invites different Detroit high-school bands to perform sometimes. I live a couple of blocks away from Chene Park, and from what I can usually hear, most bands sound ok.
But the band that performed on Thursday evening (10/22) was pretty darn awesome!!!! Their horns and percussion were crisp and clean even from a couple of blocks away.
If you know which band this was, please shout them out in the comments! If they are performing again, I'd love to come out and support.

Talk Detroit Attack on WV Businesses Rooted in....
When Councilmember Miller first launched her investigation, I assumed this was another example of "new Detroit vs. old Detroit" which, in my mind, often feels like a more palatable way of saying white vs. Black. But something about that explanation never sat right with me, especially because the businesses being targeted seem to attract a pretty diverse group of patrons.
Then the argument shifted to the bar being too close to a school. But I can't help feeling like that's a convenient cover for a different objection.
What exactly is the concern? That children are going to walk into the bar and order drinks? That simply seeing a bar on their way to school is somehow harmful?
If there are legitimate concerns about traffic, noise, public intoxication, or student safety, those absolutely deserve to be taken seriously. But those concerns should be supported by evidence, not just the assumption that a bar near a school is inherently dangerous.
Detroit has plenty of establishments serving alcohol in neighborhoods where families and children live. We don't automatically assume those businesses pose a threat to children.
What's particularly frustrating is that this new bar is intended to be an inclusive, welcoming space for people from all walks of life. Detroit is a diverse city, and businesses that reflect that diversity and bring people together should be seen as assets to our neighborhoods, not automatically treated as threats.
After listening to today's meeting and considering the past allegations of homophobia involving Miller, including the circumstances surrounding her departure from the IV board, I'm beginning to wonder whether this opposition has less to do with schools or gentrification and more to do with who this particular establishment is intended to welcome.
Because increasingly, the message I'm hearing is that white people, Black people, and gentrifiers are welcome, but the LGBTQ community might not be.
Just my hot take.

Lost/Found Missing Cat - UDM McNichols Campus
Hello everyone! I work at the University of Detroit Mercy (McNichols Campus - located on the corner of W McNichols Rd and Livernois) and one of the students I work with has lost his cat.
Her name is Gala, and she’s about 3 years old. She’s a brown tabby with green eyes and a white chin. She’s a bit skittish, so please approach with caution. Thank you!
