Deep Purple, California Jam, and the Money
In the early '70s, I handled Deep Purple's American concert business through my agency, American Talent International. Most people remember the records and the performances. I also remember the business dealings, particularly one transaction at California Jam that I still can't explain.
California Jam took place on April 6, 1974, at Ontario Motor Speedway. Deep Purple were on the bill with Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Black Sabbath, the Eagles, and others. ABC was televising it. Ritchie Blackmore wanted the band to go on around sunset, as agreed, and wasn't pleased when the organizers tried to move them up. Anyone who has seen the footage knows what happened next. Blackmore took his guitar to an ABC camera, there was an explosion onstage, and the band left by helicopter. It was quite a day.
But something else happened that caught my attention. I witnessed Deep Purple's management give the festival promoters a 25 percent refund, amounting to $100,000. In the concert business, guarantees were negotiated carefully. Handing back that kind of money wasn't something you saw every day. Maybe there was a contractual adjustment or a settlement I wasn't privy to. I never got a satisfactory explanation.
I'm not suggesting that the refund had anything to do with Blackmore's behavior onstage. I have no evidence of that. They happened at the same festival, but that's all I know. Still, I've wondered for more than fifty years why that money was returned.
Deep Purple's financial history had other complications, although these came much later and were documented in court. Their longtime managers, Tony Edwards and John Coletta, had established companies including HEC Enterprises and Deep Purple Overseas to handle royalties and other interests. There were disagreements about who owned what and how the money should be distributed. A settlement in 2005 called for certain rights to be transferred to a company called Purpletuity, but those transfers didn't take place as intended. The resulting disputes were still before a British court in 2016.
Then there was Dipak Rao, an accountant and company director involved with the royalty businesses. Over several years he diverted approximately £2.4 million into his own accounts, passing the transactions off as loans. In 2019 he received a prison sentence of six years and four months. That was a proven theft, not speculation.
Rao's crime and the California Jam refund were separate events decades apart. I'm not suggesting otherwise. One was settled in court; the other is something I saw firsthand and never understood. I'd still like to know exactly what that $100,000 was for.

Misc Deep Purple - Doing Their Thing VHS (1990) [Magazine Ads 1990]
Track List (4 Songs):
This TV special runs for roughly 25 minutes and includes four sprawling performances.
Speed King (A frenetic, fast-paced hard rock opener)
Child in Time (Widely considered the definitive centerpiece of this film, highlighting Gillan's soaring vocal range)
Wring That Neck (An instrumental showcase focused heavily on Jon Lord's heavy Hammond organ drive and Blackmore's intricate guitar trade-offs)
Mandrake Root (A heavy, psychedelic relic from their earlier Mark I era, extended into a blistering, chaotic jam)
Anybody still own this VHS ?

Ritchie was sexually assaulted by Freddie Star?
I read this on his Wikipedia page and went back and checked the reference and sure enough he does talk about it, it happened when he was 17 and working for Joe Meek. For those who don't know, Freddie Starr was a hacky 70s comedian who was one of the people investigated in the Jimmy Savile probe. His other main cultural contribution is being accused of eating a hamster in some 90s tabloid newspaper. Seems wild that a 70s rock musician would just openly talk about something like this but I guess Ritchie never cared as much about his public image as his contemporaries anyway

A very unusual Deep Purple 2cd live set
What got me started with r/talkingworldmusic was trying to learn more about this 2cd live set and I couldn't find a community focused on the world music scene, and talking about it! So here was what I set out to learn: I have long been a big fan of the Rock group Deep Purple. I recently came across a very unusual Deep Purple live 2cd set which features a 3-track, about 45 minutes long, 3-part/movement Concerto for Group and Orchestra, as well as a half dozen more or less familiar "classic-style" Deep Purple work, as well as about a half dozen not-so-typical softer and lush-sounding orchestral-group stuff. But no info is provided about where/when/who is performing on the tracks, though there is some talking on the cds which is incomprehensible for me. There is a notation that the cd set was produced in 2009 in The Nethrlands by an outfit Weton-Wesgram B.V. and has some small amount of licensing info. Is anyone able to provide more info about Who?When?Where? Disc 2 has some incredible tracks on it, including the 3 orchestral movements, but also somethings called "Ted The Mechanic", Watching The Sky", "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" and a long version of the classic "Smoke On The Water". Any info anyone can provide would make my day! Thank you. Giddeeyap.
