Three years ago on this very day, I announced to this community my intention to rank every Genesis song in the entire catalog, one per weekday, alongside "my thoughts about the songs" over the course of 2020. I called the project (quite cleverly, if I do say so myself) Hindsight is 2020. What nobody could have predicted at the time was the way the project grew: to the point that "my thoughts" began looking like full fledged essays, that my research into the songs would become increasingly extensive, and that the community would (after an admittedly rocky start) respond so positively to the exercise.
More than once over the span of the live project, it was suggested to me that I ought to turn the whole shebang into a proper book. After some hemming and hawing, I buckled down and spent not only all of 2021 but also the first half of 2022 making that happen. And so it's with a bit of well-earned excitement and pride that I can announce to you here, three years after the debut of Hindsight is 2020, my book: Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis. Play Me My Song is set to be published on March 17, 2023 through Wymer Publishing; pre-orders are available now.
If you've read the Hindsight project this may not come as much of a surprise, but Play Me My Song will be (at the time of publication) the largest book ever published on Genesis. It features not only expanded and/or rewritten essays for every single song Genesis ever officially released, but also essays for every studio album (covered originally in my "H'20" companion series) and select solo efforts (covered originally as my "Peripheral Visions" companion series). It's the entire Hindsight collection in one printed package, except more of it.
I want to thank all of you for making this possible. If not for your tremendous engagement with and enthusiasm for the work I did, I'm not sure I would've taken this next step. This book is as much yours as it is mine (though I'd prefer to keep the royalties, you understand).
And hey, if you haven't checked out the original Hindsight is 2020 series, why not give it a shot? I think and hope you'll come away pretty satisfied.
You can read through the entire Hindsight project here.
You can pre-order Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis here.
See you all in March!

tl;dr: I like the Nick Davis remixes the most, does anybody else here?
Context: I got into Genesis through selling England by the pound way back in 2010, 2011. Back then I would just listen to the album on YouTube, I’d also listen to foxtrot and the lamb, but I had a much more narrow mind back in these days and I wasn’t really interested in anything beyond that…
anyway, back in 2019, I was trying to quit smoking w33d and I needed something to listen to that would keep my mind at ease. I’m not sure how or why but I just started listening to selling England again. And it clicked, and then I got back into foxtrot, and then the lamb, and then trick of the tail and wind and wuthering, and eventually Duke became one of my favorite albums ever… Slowly, but surely I allowed myself to just love all of their music, even their mid 80s stuff.
without even realizing it, this whole time, I was listening to the Nick Davis remixes. I grew to love how they sound the clarity, the brightness, the dynamic range, Phil‘s drums, Peter‘s voice, Tony’s many many organ and keyboard and synthesizer tones… And of course, those crystal clear sparkling 12 string guitars. At this point, I just can’t imagine not listening to the Nik Davis remixes.
ever since I discovered this Reddit and this community, as much as I love and share the passion for their music, it kind of surprises me how much people do not like the 2007 remasters.
So, am I the only one? I’m also curious to go exactly why people don’t like the Nick Davis versions though anytime I’ve seen someone go into detail, usually it’s because they just flat out prefer the 94 remixes or the original ones. I have to admit I don’t think I’ve heard much of the 94 remixes and any of the compact discs I own (which i like to collect indiscriminately from the odd record store visit) seem to be from the 1980s.
Let me know what you guys think!

I was shopping at the local Hy-Vee today and they played The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway over the in-store music system. It might be the first time I've ever heard The Lamb played in a public setting... Including radio. (It was the first song, not the entire album.. of course)

I was in Stockholm over the weekend (lovely city and really lovely people).
During our time we went in to the ABBA museum. You're probably aware of this already, but it was a nice surprise to see the mixing desk ABBA used for some of their songs was also used for Duke.
And the museum has it on display.

Saw this band awhile back. They were very good when I saw them. Found they put up a video from Philly of Carpet Crawlers.

I had a battery issue that caused me to miss a few seconds to start and then didn't have a battery to finish off with and missed It's Yourself >Los Endos.
New batteries ordered so no problems for Rush on Friday.
This was my 8th time seeing The Musical Box, abd perhaps my favorite of the 8. I really love 76-80 and to have kive versions of Entangled abd Blood on the Rooftops was a huge thrill for me.

Lately after listening to the new remaster of FGTR I've been listening to a bit of the stuff they made afterwards that didn't end up on Trespass and it occurred to me they almost had an extra albums worth of material.
This video gives a relatively good sense of this and includes one earlier song to round it up:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GWYwzdn-h0c&start_radio=1&pp=QAFIAQ%3D%3D
Side One:
The Shepherd
Dusk (different version from Trespass)
Pacidy
Let Us Now Me Love
Side Two:
What's The Use? (Hair on Arms and Legs)
The Movement (Jackson Tapes)
Going Out To Get You
All of them except the Jackson Tapes can be found on Archive 1.
Maybe a whole album is a stretch because a different version of Dusk ended up on Trespass and 3 of the 4 Jackson Tape songs ended up in other songs but this is handily enough for a major EP.
I think with all of these songs it made sense that they didn't put them on Trespass but over the past weeks I've still felt drawn to listen to them a bunch of times and have been feeling that this is actually close in quality to Trespass (and leans more towards pastoral fantasy than the tracks that made it) and it's kind of a shame they didn't get an avenue to release it back then. It needs to be said that I love Trespass so this is actually high praise.
What is your opinion on these songs?

Fantastic performance from this band who play regularly at the Bridge Hotel Rozelle.
Dylan is a gifted singer who can perform either Phil or Peter which ease. Back up vocals and keyboard performed by Nick who has the best 'Here comes the Flood', after Peter Ive ever heard. The drummer and guitarists are also amazing.
I have been following this band since they started about 4 years ago and they just keep getting better!
Do yourself a favour and go see their next gig.

Miraculous performance of Ripples by the undisputed best Genesis tribute band in the world, The Musical Box. At the criminally underrated Des Plaines Theater Oct 18. #genesis #philcollins #themusicalbox

I never thought that this would happen one day.
(To be honest I also have The Lamb boxset from last year so it’s not really all of them, but it’s too big to fit there).

Here's one case where the King strings version just sounds better.

I just purchased a copy of The Lamb and I noticed that there was a section of story under all the credits that just cuts off. Is it important to the story or is it just one of the members rambling?

I’m curious what this section of fans think would’ve happened if Hackett and Gabriel never left. Given their solo careers (especially in the early 80’s) clearly this band was never going to stay a true prog outfit for much longer. I feel like the pop transition was kind of inevitable regardless if it was 5, 4, or 3.

I've really come to love this album, I think it nearly beats Invisible Touch for me now, I love how long the tracks are as well, even though the band made it so they filled the 70 mins for the CD at the time, I think the tracks are pretty much at lengths where it feels natural.
I've really come around and appreciate some of the lesser known tracks on the album, No Son of Mine, Driving the Last Spike, Dreaming While You Sleep and Fading Lights are all amazing, but stuff like Living Forever with that band jam at the end is just a pure example of how great they are, especially Tony's keyboard solo, and Way of the World is just great fun and catchy.
As for the big singles, I Can't Dance and Jesus He Knows Me, they're also really good, I wouldn't say as good as the stuff from the 80s, but they still get played and do their job, I feel like ICD could've been replaced with either of the fantastic B-Sides, On the Shoreline or Hearts on Fire (HOF could albeit with a more closer production style to the rest of the album, as it sounds a little too Invisible Touch to me).
It's a fitting end to the Phil Collins fronted era, and yeah they're way past being prog, but I think it's overall the best and freshest they've sounded since Abacab.

Any comments on the surround mix? I’m struggling to find any reviews, most concentrate on the 2 channel version. I mainly listen on a decent surround system and wouldn’t usually hesitate to buy, but 1) it’s £80 and 2) I’m assuming most of the source is 4 track so I’m not convinced the 5.1 or Atmos mix will be much of an improvement over stereo. Should I just buy the CD!? Thoughts welcome…

They are coming to my area next year and I was thinking of going. I read that the lead singer passed away in 2025 and their drummer took over, and I’m look for feedback from anyone who has seen their show recently. Thanks.

Just wondering if anyone has heard it & what they think. I haven’t heard it. I like the new stereo mix.
