Discussion Dragon Warrior is still really really good

I just went 7-1 with new Dragon Warrior around rank 900 (i fell quite a bit trying out new shit). After priest quest and warlock card bans i think dragon warrior may be the best deck this patch, no joke. The problem is almost no1 is playing it, and the other problem is the builds on hsguru are terrible. Ofc, since this is r/competitivehs where people are supposed to be trying to win rather than playing for fun, i figured i would make this post for people trying to win games at all cost (like me).

So first, i think u 100% don't play Anvil of Reshaping. It has absolutely terrible stats on hsguru and it kinda compromises ur forge 6/6s, plus it's not that slot efficient anyway, it just deals 4 damage without doing anything else, tho it is Fire but we have enough fire spells imo (considering torch can be used multiple times). So yeah don't play this card, it's fuckin bad, the worst card in the deck based on stats.

The other card u should probably not play is Archaedas. I'll admit i didn't test it but it's 4 mana 4/3 which is bad stats for the cost, but ok next turn u can play a cheap 2 mana weapon to catch up on the lost tempo, right? But the problem is, many of warrior spells are situational and i already run 4 weapons anyway (u don't want more than 4 in a deck it's way too much, in fact usually 3 is the sweet spot, 4 is slightly too much generally). And also it gets copied by hogger so u get 2 of em so actually that becomes 6 weapons in the deck... On one hand it makes it harder to draw warptooth but it also makes it harder to draw ur good cards so i don't think it's good overall to have 1 extra copy, and the stats also seem to agree with me (tho it's not terrible like Anvil).

The new cards we actually want to play are stone gauntlet and forge of origination. Now, if it was just stone gauntlet by itself i'd say it's not really better than brood keeper, with brood keeper u pay 1 more mana but u get a 2/3 body which is worth imo (the weapons are the same, both 2/2), and the armor effect doesn't do much normally. But with forge, the armor effect becomes key to activate it. So i replaced brood keeper with this, in order to keep the weapons to a manageable amount (no more than 4) and as a forge activator. It also makes our deck bit less dragon reliant since removing brood keepers makes us less worried about having dragons in our hand (and thus in our starting deck).

Forge is the absolute MVP, if u play stone gauntlet on 1 u can summon a 6/6 with taunt on turn 2 or 3 and then another one on 4 or 5 (turn 2 and 4 with coin), it is sooooo OP. This card is by far the best card in the starting hand without a doubt, even by itself it's not bad but paired with stone gauntlet it's basically GG if u open with both. So while last expansion u would be a bit more flexible with the mulligan, now i think u should be less inclined to keep cards that aren't stone gauntlet or forge, since if u get the two it's like exodia.

But which cards do we remove to make space? Well, 6 locations can clog the board, and sanguine depths is not that good anyway (tho forge only has 2 charges rather than 3 so it doesn't clog the board that much since it's quick to spend the charges), so i removed the 2nd copy. 1 is enough imo, still nice for activating duck on 4 (or 3 with coin) without other minions. Maybe even 1 is too much, who knows.

Like i said i cut both brood keepers, and finally i cut 1 slitherdrake. Slitherdrake also has pretty bad stats this expansion, sitting at the bottom of the drawn impact column in hsguru. And keep in mind the most popular version on hsguru actually plays 1 copy, so the fact its stats are this bad when a decent chunk of the sample size is with 1 copy, means if every dragon warrior version played 2 copies the stats for slitherdrake would be even worse, so the stats are actually less worse than slitherdrake truly is currently.
That brings us from 8 to 7 drakes, but since we removed a slitherdrake and both blood keepers, we now have 3 less cards that need a dragon in our hand, so i think it's fine. I think cutting it to 6 might be a bit too little dragons, which is why i kept both stadium announcers, which also perfectly keeps 4 weapons. Brood keeper is also an early drop so cutting it for stone gauntlet which is also a cheap card makes sense. Cutting an expensive card for a cheap card makes the deck lighter which doesn't make as much sense (unless that's what u want).

Overall, we replaced one 1 mana card, two 2 mana cards and one 4 mana card for two 1 mana cards and two 3 mana cards, for a total net mana of -1, meaning the deck stays roughly the same mana-wise. U could play a brood keeper instead of 2nd stadium announcer but i don't think that's correct, too few dragons imo. And since slitherdrake looks so bad in the stats i don't think playing 2nd slither instead of 2nd announcer is better. Of course, i kept both fire locations unlike the lists on hsguru, i don't see why to cut em, they're not bad cards. U could cut 1 if u wanted to, but with 6 fire spells (the same amount as before) i don't see why, unless the 2nd slitherdrake proves more important for the dragon count, in which case u'd cut either depths or the 2nd volcano. The lists on hsguru are genuinely so bad, the anvil is terrible yet is also fire meaning they have 8 fire spells but 0 volcanos, that makes absolutely 0 sense. But no surprise that 1 person popularizes a list and then every1 copies it like sheep without thinking, so all the lists of dragon warrior are terrible.

Discuss what you are playing, what you’re having success with(or failures with), and any new/cool ideas you’ve been experimenting with, etc. The point is to share what you’ve been playing, and how it’s going, good or bad - there are no other rules or requirements.

Some ideas on what to post/share:

  • What you’ve been playing and its successes (or struggles). Stats are not required. There is no minimum rank required, though sharing what rank you’ve been playing at is preferred.
  • Deck adjustments you made or are planning to make in reaction to the meta or as new innovation. E.g. “I saw 30% of deck X, so I made Y changes to help deal with deck X.” (change)

Best counter for Priest quest after the new expansion?

As the title says, what's the best counter deck to play against Priest quest?

Sadly, my expectations were quite high for this new expansion, but 70% of my games are against Priest.

I usually don't mind to play vs similar decks in a row, but Priest is extremely unfun.

Until they nerf Priest, what is the best deck to counter them?

Let's talk about Harold Lock and it's variations against this Meta

So I'm having a hard time reaching legend this month. I usually get there in the first 10 days or so, but I hit a wall around D2. I really feel like I can do it, but a few matchups are killing me, and I can't decide which version to run. Struggling with Pirate warrior, mage, DH, and both shaman flavors. Easy matchups are any priest, rafaam lock, drake lock, any egg deck, any DH deck.

Core Cards: 24 cards

2x Cursed Catacombs

2x Cursed Chains

2x Drain Soul

2x Shadowsworn Disciple

2x Caged Cranium

1x Godfather Kazakus

2x Imp Gang Stooge

1x Godfrey

2x Shrine of Twilight

2x Spire of Solitude

1x Ultraxion

2x Annihiulation

1x Deathwing

2x Unseen Atlas

Tech/Disruption:

1x Rustrot Viper - warrior, shaman, paladan, quest mage, attack druid. Auto-include 1 I think

2x Ancient Augur - auto wins vs. most combo decks (especially rafaam). I'd have a hard time getting rid of this, but it is too slow for pirate warrior and zee shaman.

1x Cho'gall - Really good in longer matchups, but maybe it's a win more card? Definitely too slow against any aggro deck, but it seals the deal against almost every slower matchup

1x Gnomeferatu - Better tempo than Augur, but no control over what gets burned

1/2x Glacial Shard - attack druid, DH, warrior. Decent a lot of the time, but not gamechanging imo

Removal/Fringe/Can't Decide:

Mortal Coil - kills pirates, draws a card, but feels useless a lot of the time. IDK if this deck needs more draw

Shadow Rounds - really good against aggro, but feels like a dead card in any other matchup

Tachyon Barrage - been experimenting with this as a finisher. It can kind of save you against wide boards, but I've also had it kill me a few times

Hellfire - obviously great against wide boards, but often times you can't afford the 3 damage

I know there's also the Animancer version with either Ultrigasaur or Asphyxiodon, but that takes up a lot of valuable room with the suffle card as well.

Mulligan: usually looking for Disciple + cursed chains, especially against priest/warlock. Always keeping catacombs and atlas, keeping viper against attack druid, DH, and warrior. Will keep Caged Cranium against faster decks if I already have some draw, will keep Img Gang Stooge except for warlock and priest. Against slower matchups I will keep/look for spire, especially if I have coin and card draw already. Sometimes I will keep Kazakus against warrior and pray for +12hp or card steal vs. combo decks. Any advice? I haven't really struggled like this to reach legend in quite a while, feel like I'm playing well, and don't really want to switch. I'd say pirate/dragon warrior is by far my most common matchup even though it should be priest according to HSGuru

Meet DustPlanner: a free HDT plugin that tells you what to disenchant (and why)

I got tired of guessing what to disenchant, so I made a free HDT plugin that plans it for me

Every time I wanted to build a new deck I ended up staring at the collection screen doing mental math. Do I need this golden? Is this rotating out? Am I going to regret dusting this epic next expansion? Half the time I dusted something I needed two weeks later.

So I built DustPlanner, a plugin for Hearthstone Deck Tracker. Pick one of your decks (or paste a deck code) and it tells you:

  • What you're missing and how much dust that is, compared to what you have
  • What to disenchant to get there, least painful copies first, with a reason for each one ("golden copy not used in any of your decks", "Wild-only card and you play Standard"...)
  • It never suggests cards from your saved decks, cards that show up in meta decks you paste in, or stuff the game won't let you dust (rewards, Core, event cards)
  • Alternatives if you don't like the first plan (no goldens, regular copies only...)
  • What's leaving Standard at the next rotation

When you actually dust the cards in game, it notices on the next sync and ticks the plan off.

Since I was already there, I also added:

  • Win rate by class, mode and format, read from your own game logs
  • A small OBS overlay (rank, session record, dust) if you stream

The important part: it never touches the game. No clicks, no memory reading, nothing automated. It only reads what HDT already knows and the log files Hearthstone writes on its own. You still do the disenchanting yourself. Everything runs locally on your PC and nothing gets uploaded.

Free and open source (MIT). Windows only, needs HDT. The exe isn't code-signed, so Windows might warn you the first time you run it.

Site with screenshots and install steps: https://dustplanner.app

It's a first release, so expect rough edges. Bugs, feedback and ideas are all welcome, especially if it ever suggests dusting something it shouldn't.

Returning Player: Hit Legend-Standard with Face Hunter

I've been legend before in the Blackrock Mountain Set and the Goblin and Gnomes (sneaky custom face warrior aggro-deck during the grim patron combo meta), but I haven't played really in years. Returned, picked the hunter starter deck and got lucky with some card packs.

I mostly played some home brew Face Hunter and was surprised at how quickly I ranked up in standard (approx 2 weeks playing casually).

Deck List:

1X Concealing Confection
2X Dreambound Raptor
2x Quel'dorei Fletcher
2x Raptor-Nest Nurse
1x Sizzling Cinder
1x Tracking
1x Bursting Shot
2x Guard Dog
1x Quick Shot*\*
2x Sylvanas's Triumph
2x Underbelly Network
1x Watfin
1x Arcane Tripwire
1x Niri of the Crater
1x R4T-C4TCH3R
1x Ranger General Sylvanas
-1x Ranger Captain Alleria
-1x Ranger Initiate Vereesa
1x Shepherd's Crook
1x Beast Tripwire
1x Dragonbane
1x Halazzi, the Lynx
1x Black Knight
1x Arachnathid

**for a lot of games, I ran Primordial Lord or Vanessa, the Ringleader instead to be a bit better vs priests. I think Magmaw would have been much, much better though; however, I did not have it (and didn't want to dust to craft it).

Seemed to work against all the common decks on ladder, but it was weak to Unholy Death Knight and those 40-card-deck priests deck variants. If you think pure rush down isn't going to work vs the opponent, you can mulligan differently & trade a bit to play mid-range.

----

It was only after that I started googling around about the meta and seeing so many people say hunter was very weak. So, I'm curious about it -- as it seemed quite strong to me.

Discussion What cards have impressed you in the Brawl that you didn't think would be that good?

I've been messing around in the Brawl most of the day and there are quite a few cards that I didn't think much of that I'm almost sure will see play in Standard decks when the expansion launches. Here's a few:

  1. Scorchfist Scholar - This card feels absolutely insane to play. Not only do you get old Flamestrike on a 5 mana 3/3, but it also hits face. There is no way Shaman isn't playing this card in some sort of deck.

  2. Ritual of Summoning - I know this card is divisive on 2 in the Brawl, but I also think it can slot into constructed decks as well. Aggro decks will hate to see this played on 2 against them, and I'd be somewhat surprised if a dedicated Ritual deck doesn't emerge.

  3. Power Tiger - In some sort of buff deck this thing will be insane. Standard will definitely have more removal for it at least, but I felt like this card was powerful in pretty much every scenario.

  4. Titanic Thrasher - I feel like this one is a popular pick in the Brawl and rightfully so, but I could see it being played in standard somewhere. Could even be insane if you could evolve it, similar to the old Mogu Fleshshaper.

Anyone else have any picks?

Misc Grove Shaper Balance Change

No one seems to be talking about this but Grove Shaper text has now been changed too "After you cast a Nature spell, summon a 2/2 treant with "Deathrattle: Get a random Nature spell"". Whilst this may not matter to most people, it is now not possible to play combos such as the armor Druid deck in Standard and the card is now unplayable in Wild because the effect is pretty bad.

N.B. The changed text is in bold font

EDIT: corrected bad grammar from writing the initial post when a bit tired

What are your favorite disruption decks?

I love cards that disrupt. All sorts of tech, loving the new warlock cards that steal and discard opponent cards. Basically I enjoy punishing combo decks or gaining tempo through tech. Steamcleaner vs azalina is so satisfying.

Aee there any archetypea you see in the coming expansion that would be particularly good at this or any that look particularly succeptible?

  • Showing off a deck you achieved legend with this season and wanting to share it without having to write a guide
