It took two hours. Used the cheapest steam cleaner I could find, scrub daddy and Cilit Bang Expert for Black mould and I got the stains out. I ran my washer on warmest cycle and so far the seal does not give way to water.

General Cleaning Why does my apartment suddenly smell like cavities

Deep cleaned yesterday. Came home after being gone for eight hour today and it smells like cavities. Investigated the fridge, trash, laundry, under the bed, bathroom, all smelled normal. But the whole place has a pungent essence of a cavity. I am scared. No apparent evidence of what it could be. Never smelled it before.

ETA: addressing some common suggestions just so some people’s concerns are at ease

- it does NOT smell like burning (such as like a cavity being drilled. More like the smell when the cavity is exposed, sorry if I wasn’t clear about that). More like a rotting

-I have only smelled it today since I’ve gotten home. I did not smell it this morning and I wasn’t smelling it when I was out of the house for a few hours after I got home from work

-I do not feel like I’m getting sick so I don’t think it’s a sinus infection or tonsil stones

-I am hopefully a few decades away from menopause so I’m not super worried about phantom smells

-my heat is not running and hasn’t since I lived it the apartment

-No hot tools are plugged in

-no potatos on the premises!

I know that none of this makes the cause any clearer but I saw some people were concerned for my well being so hopefully this addresses some immediate concerns that I’m not in psychosis or about to perish in an electrical fire. Thanks for all the advice though I appreciate anyone taking a guess.

Tools/Equipment The vacuum was used to clean up possible mouse droppings. How do I clean the vacuum?

Post image
83 Upvotes

I don't know why he did it. Madness? A seizure localized in the arm he was holding the vacuum with? A desire to make my life harder?

We had a rat in the garage a few years ago but nothing since then. I've combed all the house corners and along the walls looking for anything further but, if there's more evidence of rodents, he sucked it away.

Or he was mistaken and they weren't droppings. But for the sake of my health and sanity, I'm going with worst case scenario.

How can I make this vacuum safe to use again without spraying hantavirus or whatever else everywhere? It is a Dyson Ball Animal upright vacuum.

Adorable rodent picture for attention because I do actually love rodents. Just not the unauthorized ones in my home.

ETA: I probably shouldn't have used the word "hantavirus" because that seems to trigger a certain dismissiveness. Let me expand that there are a number of zoonotic illnesses that can be transmitted through feces, urine, or aerosolized dander (I'm unfortunately already asthmatic and immunocompromised.) I'm just trying to play it safe. Sorry for appearing like a crazy person.

My roommate used my pot to cook rice and he forgot about it and he burned the lower portion of the rice in the container and it is stuck to the pan. I tried simmering it with water and baking soda. Nothing. It is currently in the sink soaking in hot water and dish soap. How do I clean it?

General Cleaning Grew up in a hoarder house. Cleaning overwhelms me so much

I just got my apartment this year after living in my car for a while. This is my first apartment. I have a one bedroom apartment where it’s just me and my cat.
But I still don’t know where to start or how to start.
How do you keep up with everything involving cleaning and know how and how often to clean everything? I feel like my apartment is never clean and I feel like it’s turning into the house I grew up in but I genuinely feel lost. Every time I try to clean, I feel like I spend more time just standing and staring because I feel so overwhelmed.

I still don’t have any decoration in my apartment because I am so scared of hoarding stuff yet it’s starting to look like it because I can’t figure out the cleaning part.

Edit: Thank you so much for all the kind words and resources. Y’all are amazing.

Discussion How often: bathroom cleaning

How often are you guys cleaning the bathroom/shower?

It feels like every 2 weeks I’m having to deep clean our shower because it starts to look nasty. I do the bowl once a week and the sink a quick wipe down every day ish.

The shower is the least favorite task lol. We also don’t have a detachable shower head OR a spout so the entire shower has to be on for source of water 😭😭😭

Discussion Does this work with anyone else?

Whenever I feel overwhelmed when starting a large/long cleaning session, I will take a photo on my phone of a room. For some reason it makes it easier for me to see what needs to get done first or notice things I didn’t before. Some weird psychological trick that works for me 😳

Discussion is the bissel little green doing enough extraction?

• Upvotes

I was cleaning my thick foamed office chair and I'm always concerned when it comes to thick upholstery foam that it is not extracting the water enough and just pushing both water and dirt deeper into the cushion.

I often push firm or hard when extracting but obviously it kills my hands after a while.

Firm good suction is needed for carpets, so why would cushions be any different? is there a improved super sucker end piece i can buy?

it's not like it's broken or anything but i worry.

Hey all, I have this stubborn mold that keeps coming back to my caulking in the shower. Should I try something else to clean it, or recaulk the shower? (Which I've never done before and wondered what that process looks like and how long it would take 😬.

Thanks for any tips! Pics above!

Furniture Why do water marks show up on fabric sofas after spot cleaning?

Sometimes cleaning a small stain on a fabric sofa leaves behind a bigger water ring once it dries. This happens even when the original stain was barely noticeable.

What's the best way to prevent those rings without cleaning the entire sofa?

Laundry Dryer makes clothes smell bad, but only if they sit inside for a while

As the title says, I've noticed that my laundry starts smelling really bad when it comes out of the dryer, but only loads that I forget about and let sit in the dryer. Obviously I know the fix is to just take them out of the dryer, but I wanted to know why this is happening. Its really weird and only started happening a few months ago.

I did a few experiments with it to try and find the cause. I let them sit in the dryer with both the door closed and open, both made them smell. If i take them out of the dryer and keep them in the laundry room, just outside the dryer, they don't smell. It has to sit inside the dryer to stink. It's baffling to me. I'm a curious person though, I want to know why it's happening even if all I gotta do to stop it is take the dang clothes out.

I use All free and clear detergent (I have to, I'm allergic to all non-gentle detergents) and Downy gentle fabric softener. The smell isn't like mildew, it's more like BO. Like my clothes never got washed in the first place. They have to sit in the dryer at least overnight to start stinking, a few hours is usually fine.

Kitchen What could I possibly clean to get rid of this kitchen sink smell?

Post image
• Upvotes

I know this will make me sound crazy. trust me, I feel insane trying to figure it out myself & the smell is driving me insane too

my kitchen sink/drain has a metallic wet smell all the time, even when dry. it’s the first thing I smell when I walk into the kitchen especially in the mornings. it smells like wet metal. I know, not very descriptive, but that’s the best way I can think of.

we moved in a few months ago & kitchen has a enameled cast iron sink in great condition (no chips, cracks, stains, or scratches in the enamel). the drains are a garbage disposal on one side and a metal grate on the other side (pic for reference). the sink & disposal is clean. we’ve run disposal cleaners through the garbage disposal a few times but the smell doesn’t seem to come from that side of the sink in general. the smell is not rotten or associated with food. no leaks anywhere that we can see. the drains are not clogged and we have tried Drano just in case. I don’t smell it any other drains or sinks in the house. no gnats or anything. we just can’t find anything that gets rid of the smell, and it’s present 24/7.

pic is NOT our sink as I’m out of the house, but is pretty much what it looks like. ours is less stained. please, any ideas, so my kitchen can stop smelling like a metal wet dog 🫠

Bathroom URGENT! How to remove yellow stains from bleach on (I think) laminate countertop?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I messed up, I didn't know you can't use bleach on laminate (I think that's what the material is? It's like cheap wood but it's also plastic-y and resistant to water) and as you can see it left a huge yellow stain. Please let me know what I can do to fix this without having to replace the entire sink counter... I feel like crying lol

Bathroom Bathroom Tile ID & how to clean it

Post image

Just bought a house and it has a shower with this tile. I’m not exactly sure if it’s ceramic made to look like stone/slate or if they actually used stone or slate.

I just cleaned it with warm water and dawn dish soap, but I need some suggestions to DWELL it on and scrub it thoroughly.

Discussion My Clothes Still Smell Like My Old House After Washing. How Do I Keep My New House From Smelling the Same?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently moved out of a 1950s house with a distinct old house smell. Some of my clothes absorbed the odor, and even after washing, I can still notice it (though it’s not super strong).

I’m moving into a new house and worry that my clothes and furniture will bring the smell with them. My clothes are already at the new house, but I’m afraid to put them in the closets (pictured).

I tried OxiClean Odor Blasters on two items, and it seems to work, but I’m worried about discoloration on my work clothes. I also have no idea what to do about my furniture.

What’s the best way to remove the odor from clothes and furniture and prevent it from transferring to my new house? I’d love to hear from anyone who’s dealt with this. Thank you!

Furniture Best way to clean wood

Hello! I have a bookcase that was handmade for me by my grandfather almost 30 years ago. I have recently learned that my family habit using Pledge on every wooden surface is really bad for furniture! But now I have no idea how to dust/polish it to make sure that it lasts so I can pass it down to my daughter in another 20 years!

Bonus: my grandmother left me her 1989 vintage jewelry armoire that ALSO has only been pledged during its life. Is there something separate I should do for this to keep it looking nice?

Thank you so much!

Bathroom Has anyone accidentally used bleach with an acidic bathroom cleaner?

I left Domestos Thick Bleach in my toilet for about 30 minutes, then sprayed Zoflora Power Bathroom Cleaner (which contains formic and lactic acids) while cleaning the toilet.
I had no idea you weren’t supposed to use these together — I only just learned this! I didn’t notice a strong smell and have had no symptoms, even 1.5 hours later.
My bathroom is en suite with no window, and I’m worried about possible fumes and whether it’s safe to sleep in my bedroom tonight.
Has anyone done something similar? Were you okay afterwards?

Bathroom Black stain on stone

Post image

I had a plastic organizer thing in the corner that I moved and cleaned under at least once or twice a month as I knew water gets trapped under, I smelled something really bad moved it and found a black stain, it’s been only a little over month since last time, it looks like it’s inside the stone, doesn’t move no matter what i use to wipe it, what can I use to actually clean it? It looks and smells bad.

Flooring Limestone Floor Tiles

Post image
2 Upvotes

Does anyone have any advice about how to clean limestone floor tiles? We moved into a house recently and the previous occupant was an elderly lady on her own, whereas we are a large family. The high traffic areas of the bathroom floor are getting really grubby with ingrained dirt and scrubbing doesn’t seem to lift it. Any ideas about how to clean them? Or do we just wait until we can re-floor with something more suited to our needs?!
