It took two hours. Used the cheapest steam cleaner I could find, scrub daddy and Cilit Bang Expert for Black mould and I got the stains out. I ran my washer on warmest cycle and so far the seal does not give way to water.

Tools/Equipment The vacuum was used to clean up possible mouse droppings. How do I clean the vacuum?

Post image
• Upvotes

I don't know why he did it. Madness? A seizure localized in the arm he was holding the vacuum with? A desire to make my life harder?

We had a rat in the garage a few years ago but nothing since then. I've combed all the house corners and along the walls looking for anything further but, if there's more evidence of rodents, he sucked it away.

Or he was mistaken and they weren't droppings. But for the sake of my health and sanity, I'm going with worst case scenario.

How can I make this vacuum safe to use again without spraying hantavirus or whatever else everywhere? It is a Dyson Ball Animal upright vacuum.

Adorable rodent picture for attention because I do actually love rodents. Just not the unauthorized ones in my home.

ETA: I probably shouldn't have used the word "hantavirus" because that seems to trigger a certain dismissiveness. Let me expand that there are a number of zoonotic illnesses that can be transmitted through feces, urine, or aerosolized dander (I'm unfortunately already asthmatic and immunocompromised.) I'm just trying to play it safe. Sorry for appearing like a crazy person.

Discussion Guest beds - how to keep them when empty?

How do you keep your guest beds when nobody is using them? I’m new to having a guest room. When I was a kid, I remember crawling into the bed at my grandmother’s house and seeing all of the dust fly into the air. Don’t keep sheets or blankets on the mattress? Cover the whole thing with a giant sheet? How are you keeping them clean?

General Cleaning Why does my apartment suddenly smell like cavities

Deep cleaned yesterday. Came home after being gone for eight hour today and it smells like cavities. Investigated the fridge, trash, laundry, under the bed, bathroom, all smelled normal. But the whole place has a pungent essence of a cavity. I am scared. No apparent evidence of what it could be. Never smelled it before.

ETA: addressing some common suggestions just so some people’s concerns are at ease

- it does NOT smell like burning (such as like a cavity being drilled. More like the smell when the cavity is exposed, sorry if I wasn’t clear about that). More like a rotting

-I have only smelled it today since I’ve gotten home. I did not smell it this morning and I wasn’t smelling it when I was out of the house for a few hours after I got home from work

-I do not feel like I’m getting sick so I don’t think it’s a sinus infection or tonsil stones

-I am hopefully a few decades away from menopause so I’m not super worried about phantom smells

-my heat is not running and hasn’t since I lived it the apartment

-No hot tools are plugged in

-no potatos on the premises!

I know that none of this makes the cause any clearer but I saw some people were concerned for my well being so hopefully this addresses some immediate concerns that I’m not in psychosis or about to perish in an electrical fire. Thanks for all the advice though I appreciate anyone taking a guess.

General Cleaning Grew up in a hoarder house. Cleaning overwhelms me so much

I just got my apartment this year after living in my car for a while. This is my first apartment. I have a one bedroom apartment where it’s just me and my cat.
But I still don’t know where to start or how to start.
How do you keep up with everything involving cleaning and know how and how often to clean everything? I feel like my apartment is never clean and I feel like it’s turning into the house I grew up in but I genuinely feel lost. Every time I try to clean, I feel like I spend more time just standing and staring because I feel so overwhelmed.

I still don’t have any decoration in my apartment because I am so scared of hoarding stuff yet it’s starting to look like it because I can’t figure out the cleaning part.

Edit: Thank you so much for all the kind words and resources. Y’all are amazing.

A mat underneath a litter box did this to the floor. It’s not real wood. Is there a solution you recommend to get it out? Last resort is try to redo this part of the floor (rental).

Discussion How often do you mop? Daily made a way bigger difference than I expected

I used to mop maybe once or twice a week and honestly thought the floors were already pretty clean. It wasn’t until I got a robot vacuum and started having it mop every day that I noticed a difference. The dirty water was noticeably darker the first few days, but after about a week it started coming back a lot cleaner. The floors also feel different under bare feet now. Apparently my clean floors weren’t as clean as I thought lol.

How often do you guys actually mop? Do you think daily mopping is worth it, or is that overkill?

General Cleaning Really really stupid carpet incident

Thumbnail

The cat did a poo on our new, very expensive wool carpet. I panicked and cleaned it with water, which left some brown stains so I used the stain remover, thinking it would be fine because it has no bleach in it. I then used quite a bit of water to get all the product out after letting it sit for 5 minutes. This is the result 3 days later.

I have a dreadful feeling that the only real option will be to replace a huge area of carpet, maybe half of the room, so that the replacement isn't obvious. A patch replacement would be really very obvious unfortunately.

What are my options?

Please no shaming, I know how dumb this was but I panicked. I feel guilty enough already.

Furniture Why do water marks show up on fabric sofas after spot cleaning?

Sometimes cleaning a small stain on a fabric sofa leaves behind a bigger water ring once it dries. This happens even when the original stain was barely noticeable.

What's the best way to prevent those rings without cleaning the entire sofa?

I accidentally got a huge turmeric stain on my white marble countertop. Was freaking out at first bc it was not budging but then followed a tip I found on YouTube.

I mixed Oxiclean with water and let it sit in the stain for a few hours. Sooner than later it was completely gone!!! I followed this YT video: https://youtu.be/uQjbiFXDZEM?si=fqq0S7Y1oDRf7BoN

Flooring Limestone Floor Tiles

Post image
• Upvotes

Does anyone have any advice about how to clean limestone floor tiles? We moved into a house recently and the previous occupant was an elderly lady on her own, whereas we are a large family. The high traffic areas of the bathroom floor are getting really grubby with ingrained dirt and scrubbing doesn’t seem to lift it. Any ideas about how to clean them? Or do we just wait until we can re-floor with something more suited to our needs?!

Keep cleaning the carpet still brown water coming! I got my bedroom carpet cleaned by a profession mobile van wet vacuum cleaner. My carpet wasn’t dirty at all and I have a small wet vacuum it always sucks clean once I have cleaned it! However after pro cleaning there were brown spots and I poured gallons of water and sucking it all brown water!

I called the guy he came said possibly water line was mixed with dirty water, he cleaned again. However at night time the brown residue surfaced! I rented a wet vacuum cleaned for 4 hours, and now the brown water is still there and the carpet is not clean! My carpet was never this dirty it was always returning clean water after I had cleaned it..

What could be the issue…?

Kitchen Removing streaks from stainless steel?

It’s kind of hard to capture on camera, but we have streaks on our stainless steel fridge door that are of unknown origin and they won’t go away. We’ve tried stainless steel cleaner and dish soap and a microfiber towel. They’ve gotten a bit lighter with cleaning efforts but are still there. Does anyone have a Hail Mary we could try?

The O ring on my bissell broke between the spray valve and the attachment. Now it leaks everywhere when I use it. Bissell won’t replace it and instructed me to buy a new machine. 😡 Additionally I have conveniently lost the ring so I can’t measure it or size match it at the hardware store.

Any suggestions/advice? TIA

They said I need to buy a new machine. 😡 And, now I have conveniently lost the ring before I thought to measure it and find a replacement.

Any thoughts/ideas/experience?

TIA

Any thoughts

Discussion What's one small cleaning habit that made your home easier to maintain?

I'm not great at sticking to big cleaning routines, so I'm looking for simple habits that actually work. Little things that take a minute or two but keep the mess from piling up. What do you do that makes a difference without feeling like you're cleaning all day?

Kitchen Help - mark on Boos block island

Post image
• Upvotes

I had a cleaning service do a deep clean yesterday to help get me back to a baseline level I can maintain after some hard hitting life stuff led me to neglect anything more than surface-level cleaning for a time.

They accomplished a lot and I'm happy with a lot of things, disappointed in some, but this one is making me mad. I suspect they must have put a can (cleaning product?) down on the Boos block that left a ring.

When I saw it, I wiped down the whole board with a drop of dish soap and warm water, as I usually clean it. When the ring didn't budge, I tried scrubbing with baking soda paste. No change. I threw down some coarse salt and scrubbed with that, I don't have lemon on hand but will pick some up while out today to try that... but so far I haven't been able to make any change.

Any ideas? I love this island, it's the central workspace of my kitchen, and the ring is right in the middle, so this isn't really bothering me!

Flooring Seeking advice on how to tackle new carpet odor

Hello, I have moved to the US from India and have no experience with carpeted floors. The landlord has put up a new carpet in the bedrooms and there is a strong odor.

Apart from opening the windows and time, how can I ensure that the smell goes away quickly?

Thanks in advance.
