It took two hours. Used the cheapest steam cleaner I could find, scrub daddy and Cilit Bang Expert for Black mould and I got the stains out. I ran my washer on warmest cycle and so far the seal does not give way to water.

Bathroom My room stinks so bad and I don’t know what to do.

I’m 17 and I like to keep a tidy room but my parents make me keep an aggressive dog in my room, so they force him to be in there 24/7 all hours of the day. He has an ear infection that they neglect and it leaks this strange stinky juice that ruined anything it touches smell wise, my carpets stink as well as my bed and everything else in my room. My parents constantly bring him outside on a leash then put him in my room and cause mud to be everywhere, I’ve tried everything I can think of, but my room just ends up stinking due to his infection and getting dirty again due to mud, what can I do?

Kitchen How do I clean this pot?

My roommate used my pot to cook rice and he forgot about it and he burned the lower portion of the rice in the container and it is stuck to the pan. I tried simmering it with water and baking soda. Nothing. It is currently in the sink soaking in hot water and dish soap. How do I clean it?

I can’t take them down to handle them by hand. I’m not sure what cleaners would be safe for the metal, glue, lucite, and enamel. The pieces date from the 1930s. Any advice is appreciated!

Discussion How often: bathroom cleaning

How often are you guys cleaning the bathroom/shower?

It feels like every 2 weeks I’m having to deep clean our shower because it starts to look nasty. I do the bowl once a week and the sink a quick wipe down every day ish.

The shower is the least favorite task lol. We also don’t have a detachable shower head OR a spout so the entire shower has to be on for source of water 😭😭😭

Tools/Equipment The vacuum was used to clean up possible mouse droppings. How do I clean the vacuum?

Post image
97 Upvotes

I don't know why he did it. Madness? A seizure localized in the arm he was holding the vacuum with? A desire to make my life harder?

We had a rat in the garage a few years ago but nothing since then. I've combed all the house corners and along the walls looking for anything further but, if there's more evidence of rodents, he sucked it away.

Or he was mistaken and they weren't droppings. But for the sake of my health and sanity, I'm going with worst case scenario.

How can I make this vacuum safe to use again without spraying hantavirus or whatever else everywhere? It is a Dyson Ball Animal upright vacuum.

Adorable rodent picture for attention because I do actually love rodents. Just not the unauthorized ones in my home.

ETA: I probably shouldn't have used the word "hantavirus" because that seems to trigger a certain dismissiveness. Let me expand that there are a number of zoonotic illnesses that can be transmitted through feces, urine, or aerosolized dander (I'm unfortunately already asthmatic and immunocompromised.) I'm just trying to play it safe. Sorry for appearing like a crazy person.

Discussion Does this work with anyone else?

Whenever I feel overwhelmed when starting a large/long cleaning session, I will take a photo on my phone of a room. For some reason it makes it easier for me to see what needs to get done first or notice things I didn’t before. Some weird psychological trick that works for me 😳

General Cleaning Advice for deep cleaning home with children

• Upvotes

I work a 8-5 five days a week and have two children under the age of 3. I’ve been doing little chores everyday in the evening but have been so tired maintaining everything that some days I just go straight to bed after the kids are all tucked in. How do you manage keeping your house tidy with toys galore all over the house? I have bins that I put them in but sometimes I feel like it’s not enough as they’ll just pull it right back out. Any tips or tricks on what to clean everyday without overwhelming yourself?

General Cleaning Why does my apartment suddenly smell like cavities

Deep cleaned yesterday. Came home after being gone for eight hour today and it smells like cavities. Investigated the fridge, trash, laundry, under the bed, bathroom, all smelled normal. But the whole place has a pungent essence of a cavity. I am scared. No apparent evidence of what it could be. Never smelled it before.

ETA: addressing some common suggestions just so some people’s concerns are at ease

- it does NOT smell like burning (such as like a cavity being drilled. More like the smell when the cavity is exposed, sorry if I wasn’t clear about that). More like a rotting

-I have only smelled it today since I’ve gotten home. I did not smell it this morning and I wasn’t smelling it when I was out of the house for a few hours after I got home from work

-I do not feel like I’m getting sick so I don’t think it’s a sinus infection or tonsil stones

-I am hopefully a few decades away from menopause so I’m not super worried about phantom smells

-my heat is not running and hasn’t since I lived it the apartment

-No hot tools are plugged in

-no potatos on the premises!

I know that none of this makes the cause any clearer but I saw some people were concerned for my well being so hopefully this addresses some immediate concerns that I’m not in psychosis or about to perish in an electrical fire. Thanks for all the advice though I appreciate anyone taking a guess.

Discussion is the bissel little green doing enough extraction?

I was cleaning my thick foamed office chair and I'm always concerned when it comes to thick upholstery foam that it is not extracting the water enough and just pushing both water and dirt deeper into the cushion.

I often push firm or hard when extracting but obviously it kills my hands after a while.

Firm good suction is needed for carpets, so why would cushions be any different? is there a improved super sucker end piece i can buy?

it's not like it's broken or anything but i worry.

Flooring Pet safe carpet spot cleaner spray for cat scooting on carpet?

• Upvotes

I'm sure something similar has been asked before but I can't find a post with exactly what I need. My cat won't stop scooting on the carpet 😭 (many vet visits, she's fine- trying to adjust her diet to get more fiber, etc and now she's taking miralax. Vet also said when they start scooting it's hard to get them to stop even if they are pooping normally again fml). I've been using an actual carpet cleaner to clean but it's gotten a little better so I think a spot cleaning spray would now be better so I'm not dragging out the whole carpet cleaner for a small spot every other day. Does anyone have any recommendations for a spot cleaning spray that won't stain the carpet (brown carpets) and is pet safe? Thank you so much!

Discussion Guest beds - how to keep them when empty?

How do you keep your guest beds when nobody is using them? I’m new to having a guest room. When I was a kid, I remember crawling into the bed at my grandmother’s house and seeing all of the dust fly into the air. Don’t keep sheets or blankets on the mattress? Cover the whole thing with a giant sheet? How are you keeping them clean?

Hey all, I have this stubborn mold that keeps coming back to my caulking in the shower. Should I try something else to clean it, or recaulk the shower? (Which I've never done before and wondered what that process looks like and how long it would take 😬.

Thanks for any tips! Pics above!

General Cleaning 28M here — never really learned how to take care of a home Where would you start?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone — hoping for some gentle guidance here, no judgment please, I'm genuinely starting from scratch on this one 😅

I'm 28, and most of my adult life has honestly been more "survive" than "live comfortably" — moved around a lot, lived pretty bare-bones, never really had a reason to build proper home habits. That's about to change in a really good way: my wife is joining me soon, and we're moving into a cozy little 500 sq ft one-bedroom apartment here in Canada. With about 8 months of winter ahead of us, we're going to be spending a lot of time at home together, and I really want it to feel warm and taken care of for her, not just "livable."

The honest truth is I just don't know the basics that a lot of people seem to pick up naturally, so I'm hoping some of you lovely people can point me in the right direction:

How do you handle your bedding/laundry routine? Like how often do sheets actually need washing, and is there a simple rhythm that works (every week, every other week)?

Ironing — I have genuinely never learned this. What's a good beginner setup, and is it worth learning or just easier to send things out?

For a small one-bedroom space, what are the first few things that made the biggest difference for you in keeping it feeling organized instead of cluttered?

I'm not trying to make this place magazine-perfect — I just want the little basics handled so it feels like a real home when she walks in. Any tips, product recs, or even a YouTube channel that helped you would mean a lot. Thank you in advance 🙏

Kitchen What could I possibly clean to get rid of this kitchen sink smell?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I know this will make me sound crazy. trust me, I feel insane trying to figure it out myself & the smell is driving me insane too

my kitchen sink/drain has a metallic wet smell all the time, even when dry. it’s the first thing I smell when I walk into the kitchen especially in the mornings. it smells like wet metal. I know, not very descriptive, but that’s the best way I can think of.

we moved in a few months ago & kitchen has a enameled cast iron sink in great condition (no chips, cracks, stains, or scratches in the enamel). the drains are a garbage disposal on one side and a metal grate on the other side (pic for reference). the sink & disposal is clean. we’ve run disposal cleaners through the garbage disposal a few times but the smell doesn’t seem to come from that side of the sink in general. the smell is not rotten or associated with food. no leaks anywhere that we can see. the drains are not clogged and we have tried Drano just in case. I don’t smell it any other drains or sinks in the house. no gnats or anything. we just can’t find anything that gets rid of the smell, and it’s present 24/7.

pic is NOT our sink as I’m out of the house, but is pretty much what it looks like. ours is less stained. please, any ideas, so my kitchen can stop smelling like a metal wet dog 🫠

Discussion Need advice on how to tackle one area of my room.

• Upvotes

I live with a man so most of the time I’m the one cleaning up cups and taking multiple up and downstairs, there’s only one area of my room that’s messy and that’s my alcove bookshelf desk area. The desk is filled with books and scraps of paperwork, it is a large stack of books and documents spread haphazardly covering the desk (I think we were doing a diy job and that’s how it’s resulted in this way). Honestly can’t remember how many months it’s been that way, the rest of my space is fairly neat but I always say to myself “tomorrow I’m going to tackle that” rinse and repeat. I might have something minorly wrong with me where I notice something I cannot stop until it’s fixed and clean but even though this area bothers me I haven’t zoned in on that area at all. Does anyone have any suggestions? I genuinely don’t understand why I’m delaying this job or how I can overcome the mental barrier of the amount of hours it’s going to take to fully sort.

Bathroom What’s the best way to prevent water stains on a plastic bath tub? Is there anyway I can reverse this?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi! I moved here less than a year ago and the place has a bath tub made of a white plastic. Apologies if the photo doesn’t clearly depict it (lighting is always weird in the bathroom) but I’ve been having trouble keeping what I believe are water stains out of the tub.

I’m worried about corroding or ruining the tub, so I’ve mainly been using dish soap and a soft bristled brush to scrub. Is there any cleaning agent or material I can use to prevent these stains or reverse the current stains?

I do typically use a bathmat and try to clean under it often, but even then there’s still some water stainage.

Tools/Equipment Cleaning mold from inside of a Beast blender lid/blade?

• Upvotes

I got out my Beast blender today to find that the lid/ blade attachment (which has been stored closed up against one of the blender cups) had a thin layer of mold (mildew?) coating its surfaces and crevices (around the interior of the edge, under and around the blade, etc).

I scrubbed with soap and hot water repeatedly, using a small brush tool to get into the crevices and ridges. I also soaked for a few minutes with vinegar. But it still has a hint of that mold/mildew smell.

Any suggestions for further cleaning?
