PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
• Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

Kitten Help My female kitten has been acting weird today

• Upvotes

So today my female cat has been acting weird like doing sounds resembling a pigeon. She rolls kn the floor and kinda spreads her paws while twisting her body on the floor, she sometimes gets close to her stepbrother as if she wanted to play but simple drops and begings to do the pigeon sounds... I don't really know if she is hurt or if she is feeling any kind of discomfort, she lets me pet her like normal. She is like 6 months old. The other cat is a year and 3 months old (he is neutered).

She is eating like normal and sometimes just plays like normal then suddenly begins to do the sound and roll on the floor while twisting her body and spreading her paws while twitching her back legs.

I will get her to a vet as soon as I finish my shift but I wanted to know if I should really be worried.

Edit: the lady we get her from said told us that she already had her spayed... I should've specified this in the post... sorry

The male cat was spayed (I got him to the vet personally) 4 months ago.

(Sorry if I was stuttering I was nervous while recording the video 😆)

Update in comments!

Kitten Help Possible antifreeze poisoning

Thumbnail gallery
83 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate your opinions and advice about my kitten, Yuki. She is 5 months old and was taken to the vet on Wednesday morning with suspected antifreeze poisoning.

They did blood tests, and since then she has been receiving IV fluids every day to help flush her kidneys, as the vets told us that her results suggest possible kidney damage.

Her blood test results are:

- UREA: 46.4 mmol/L

- PHOS: 5.20 mmol/L

- CREA: 367 µmol/L

She also seems to be experiencing abdominal pain. She spends most of her time lying down and only gets up occasionally to walk to her water bowl, where she drinks. Unfortunately, she refuses to eat.

However, she still responds to us when we call her, and sometimes she even purrs when we pet her.

She urinates once a day, and until today, she had been having bowel movements every day. She hasn’t had one today, though.

Do you think there is still a chance that her condition could improve? Has anyone been through something similar with their cat and seen them recover?

I’m really worried about my little girl and would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Injury Partner was instructed to give a cat hydrogen peroxide

Post image
• Upvotes

23 f, posting in us. Vet is technically available but would make us unable to pay our bills right now. Cat is about 3-4 years old, not 100% certain. Unspayed female cat.
The cat ate some string and my partner panicked about it something terrible. They called a vet nearby and the vet told them to give her a little bit of hydrogen peroxide to make her throw it up.
It’s about 3 days later and she hasn’t stopped throwing up and is uninterested in food.
I just googled it and saw just how bad hydrogen peroxide is based off google ai. Did we do something that’s gonna slowly kill her?
I’m very worried. My partner will be distraught at the loss of this kitty and I will be sad too. I think my partner panicked very severely on account of the string, but they were just trying to help because they know that eaten string can mean surgery and death, but I’m worried what we did is going to hurt just the same. Pic of kitty snoozing a while ago looking big bellied.

Edit: the cat did throw up the string shortly after given the peroxide. I’m asking about the peroxide.

Edit 2: locking the post and created a plan of action. We are completely unable to go to a vet today and I will take her first thing tomorrow for whatever they may suggest be fluids or what else. I understand how emergent this is and will do everything I can to help my kitty within my power.
Also, photo is from months ago, far before this incident.
Thanks to all comments

Kitten Help I need some advice about my new kitten please help

Hello, i just found her 2 nights ago under my car. She ate two cans of kitten fancy feast since last night and is extremely cuddly. I gave her a bath with dawn dish soap (got this info from google) to kill the fleas. I tried removing them while she was wet but she was so cold i just dried her first. Im gonna get them off after she calms down a little, shes dry now but meowing a lot. I rinsed her for a good while but should i be worried about her licking the soap off her fur and getting sick? Also does anyone have tips for cleaning the inside of her ears? Also just so i know for future reference, is dawn the safest most gentle option? I read she was too young for flea medication so dawn was the safer, more immediate option. Thank you so much. I am 21, i live in Southern California, planning to take her to the vet asap but still working on it, i believe shes 2ish months probably like 2 months and a week, shes a girl and is not spayed.

General Advice Accidentally washed my cat with Dawn Platinum

EDIT: I re-rinsed her with just water and called poison control for pets. They advised to monitor her for any vomiting or strangers behavior so I’m just going to keep a close eye on her tonight. Thank you guys!

W25

My sweet cat has fleas, I have been trying to get rid of this infestation for months. I have been cleaning and washing everything in the house multiple times a week, vacuuming once a day, and treating her. She has been taking capstar to kill the adults and a topical prescription from the vet. But these fleas are stubborn, the capstar will kill them off and she will be fine for a few weeks and BAM they are back.

Tonight I was restarting the round of capstar but last time, she got really itchy and a couple of the dying fleas jumped on me. I freaked. So I thought I could give her a bath to get the dead ones off and any that may remain would die with the capstar.

I got her ready for her bath and grabbed the Dawn because I realized I was out of flea shampoo. I didn’t realize till afterwards that it was Dawn platinum and now I am freaking out because I know you aren’t supposed to use anything other than regular Dawn. I feel terrible, I typically don’t even like using regular Dawn but I thought this time would be fine.

I am watching her now and other than her just being pissed off because she got a bath, she is acting fine.

I’m not sure what to do. Please help and I know I suck for bathing her with Dawn, I’m just as mad at myself as you are.

Also, I am not really how old she is. I got her off the streets

General Advice What’s going on with this sweet girls front paws?

This sweet girl was owner surrendered to our local no kill shelter along with her brother. I’ve noticed she walks strange and I’m assuming it’s because she’s been declawed at some point. Is she in pain? Is there surgery that can fix this? Long term complications? Brother cat is also declawed but seems to walk just fine. Both cats are approximately 9 years old.

General Advice Lump beside my kitten’s incision after recent desexing—does she need an urgent vet check?

Thumbnail gallery
60 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
My kitten Lala is approximately two months old and was recently desexed before we adopted her on 13 October. I don’t know the exact surgery date.
I noticed a rounded, ball-like lump beside her incision (photo attached). The cut appears closed and dry, with a small crust, but I’m concerned about the swelling.
We also noticed an unusual smell from her upper back, away from the incision, and gently wiped that area with a towel dampened with plain water. We haven’t bathed her.
I’m planning to contact the adoption centre or surgery vet. Based on the photo, does this warrant an emergency assessment tonight, or could it wait until tomorrow? What warning signs should I watch for?
Thank you.

Eye Issues Do I need an urgent vet visit?

Thumbnail gallery
247 Upvotes

UPDATE 3: SHE HAS BEEN SEEN!! Here’s everything I know: (Also, see POVV - proof of vet visit - in the comments) She’s on antibiotics for a week and I’m to continue with cleaning her eye throughout the day. Her corneas are clear and eyes are bright and responsive so everything looks positive as long as she responds to the antibiotics.

She’s going in during the week to get dewormed etc. as the vet wants her to put on a bit more weight before giving her that, but she’s not worried about making her wait as she’s healthy overall, just tiny. She did say that as she was seen in Emerg, if I have any issues we can bring her straight in and be seen without an appointment if there’s any change.

The vet also said that if the antibiotics need a boost with topical treatment then I can either pick up ointment from them or buy Polysporin Pink Eye to use. She said it could’ve waited until morning but I’m glad we didn’t.

Bonus good news is that she’s free of fleas and ear mites right now and has a normal heartbeat and no signs of RI. I know what to look for with that so I’ll be keeping an eye out.

So thank you to everyone for the advice. I’m glad the other vet’s tone had me questioning her and made me come here. I know the harsh comments came from a good place as well and I’d honestly do the same thing, so I’m not mad. Little one’s welfare is more important than anything else so again, thank you ALL 🧡

UPDATE 2: WE ARE EN ROUTE PEOPLE! I repeat. We are en route

UPDATE: Called urgent clinic. Dealing with them now. Thanks everyone for the reassurance I wasn’t just being overly anxious.

Husband found this kitten yesterday. It has an eye infection that’s swollen since he found it yesterday morning. I can see the nearest vet to me on Tuesday and she’s recommended using contact lens solution for the meantime but definitely not plain water as it’s drying.

TLDR: Can she really wait until Tuesday?

First picture was 5.30pm yesterday. Second is 7.30pm tonight after a quick wipe over with saline.

36, SK. I think it’s female and 4-5 weeks. Weighs 294g.

Breathing Issues Is his breathing labored?

Yesterday we started noticing he’s just not acting like himself. Usually, he’s all up under your feet and very vocal. He’s been very lethargic and not interested in his food. Even tried tuna to entice him. He nibbled but then didn’t finish it. He’s been drinking water, but we noticed this morning he peed on his bed, which he’s never done. My husband is taking him to the urgent care vet when they open at 1 p.m., but I’m just scared he’s not okay. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

Kitten Help Neck Lump

Poster Age: I'm a student and still financially dependent, so I can't fully afford veterinary expenses on my own.

Country: Philippines 🇵🇭

Vet Info: I contacted a veterinary clinic/page to ask about my cat's lump. They mentioned that the cost could be around ₱3,000 or more if it turns out to be a tumor. I haven't had my cat examined in person yet because of my financial situation.

Main Issue: Hello everyone! I just wanted to ask if there's any remedy for a cat with a lump on its neck. I just noticed the lump earlier today. I searched online and found several cases where similar lumps turned out to be abscesses, but I'm not sure if that's what's going on with my cat.

I suspect it might be an abscess because my other cat sometimes bites or plays roughly with her.

She's still eating, but I'm worried about the lump. I also read in a community post that amoxicillin powder formulated for cats can be mixed with water and given as treatment. Is that true, or is it unsafe to give without a vet's prescription?

I'm still a student, and my budget is very limited. I want to get my cat the help she needs, but I'm worried about the costs. Are there any safe temporary measures I can take while trying to find affordable veterinary care? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cat Age: Around 5 months old.

Cat Sex + Neuter Info: Female, not spayed yet.

Financial Situation: I can't currently afford expensive veterinary procedures or tests on my own.

General Advice Possibly abandoned cat???

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Sorry I don’t know if this is the right place for this but I’m concerned for this poor baby.
I’ve seen this cat around for a bit, but it only came out at night and wandered the back yard, but today I saw it sitting in the front yard. I went approached it because I had seen a collar, but there ended up being no tags on it, and she was absolutely starving (I gave her some tuna and she almost inhaled it instantly.)
She’s very friendly, she kept climbing all over me, but there’s definitely something not right here.. I could probably keep her in my room if I need to.
I’ll try to attach pictures but it doesn’t work sometimes.
I’m sorry if this makes no sense and isn’t in the right place i just really don’t want this cat to get hurt!!
(Some Information for if they might be lost: in FarmVille, va. Probably female, black and orange. Seems young but not a kitten. Also has a pink collar.)

Injury Cat woke up with petichiae on ear

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

Hi there, we have a 7 year old male neutered cat. He is white but not albino. Today he woke up with little purple / red spots on his left ear. There are also some red dots/ maybe scratch marks near the ear but it’s hard to tell right now because he just woke up and he’s not sitting still. I’ve never seen this on a cat before. We are calling the vet on Monday but do you think we should bring him to emergency?? He seems to be acting fine otherwise. Claude tells me to wipe a wet paper towel inside the ear to check for mites (nothing came up), and check his gums for paleness.

UPDATE: his gums seem pale.

Our vet is closed for the weekend. I am an adult and live in NYC. We have pet insurance and money for his care so vet accessibility is not the issue. I am a huge worrier though and so I’m asking if anyone here has seen this before? Thank you!

TLDR: otherwise healthy cat woke up with red and purple spots on ear, is it serious? What could be the cause?

UPDATE 2: turns out the vet IS open today, we called and explained what’s happening and they’re saying it’s not an emergency unless he acts weird or stops eating. So we made an appointment for Monday but I’m still worried.

Appearance URGENT! What is in my cats ears?

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

These are the best photos I could take. I’m petrified that it’s ear mites, and if it is I know that this has been a problem for a long time.
When I first got him 2 years ago I thought it was dirt, and figured he would clean it out himself. It’s completely my fault for never checking thoroughly.
He showed signs of his ear being irritated recently hence why I looked again and snapped the photos.
Please how do I go about this as cheap as possible. I don’t want him to be miserable anymore.
I am 20, in Texas. Since it’s Saturday I’ve left voicemails to vets, I’m awaiting responses. He is 2 years old. A boy and neutered. Budget is extremely tight.

Behavioral Issue Please help, he is triggering my stress which is triggering my OCD, problems in my relationship, trashing our new apartment and I’m not sleeping, i am at my wits end.

Thumbnail gallery
772 Upvotes

I love my boy. He’s been with me for 3 years. When I first got him, he was peeing all over the place, come to find out he had a UTI. The last place I got him was going to throw him out on the streets because of that and I took him in and to the vet.

He healed and the peeing went away, but has always pooped right outside the litter box, that hasn’t gone away. he started getting aggressive with our older cats, but not the younger cat closer to his age. He loves to get under the other cats skin.

He’s always been a the worlds sweetest cat, but also a pain in the ass, eating stuff he isn’t supposed to and breaking into anything he can, we put baby locks up everywhere. But I was just glad the peeing was gone.

A couple years after his first pee incident, on top of all of his other issues, Ive noticed he started doing it again, where he was peeing all over the place. I took him to the vet and the vet claimed it was simply behavioral and territorial aggression. I told them that he had had a UTI in the past and that he has been acting odd, different than the last 2-3 years and maybe testing would be good and they basically said no it’s not necessary and sent me on my way.

they literally did not touch him because he was being a nervous cat despite giving him 100 mg of gabapentin like they instructed me to. They didn’t run tests, they didn’t do anything.

So $100 vet visit later, the problem persists, despite increased litter boxes, pheromones, cat trees, food, etc.

TLDR; Anyways, we just moved into a new apartment in hopes it would help with his stress (no we didn’t move for him). The initial move, of course I know won’t help, but since we moved in, over a month after moving, I noticed his stress is a little better and he is picking on the older cats a little less. But he is still peeing all over the house, literally NEW apartment. Peeing on the carpet, on the floor and it’s seeping into the base boards. the pee seems to be increasing, he squats, it’s puddled. And as of last night (two months or more after taking him to the vet) I noticed possible blood in his urine and am promptly taking him back to the vet.

Here’s the problem, I’m not sleeping. They wake me up at 3 AM to be fed and I am up from 3 AM pretty much for the rest of the day to catch him when he’s getting ready to pee. While waiting in doom scrolling trying to figure shit out to no avail.
I have a broken toes right now (as of two days ago), school full time, working (currently have the flu also) and my boyfriend works 12’s and will help but isn’t enthused obviously especially since he’s been peeing all over everything. He loves the cat just as much as I do but he’s getting annoyed atp. I’ve been dealing with this for months at this point, and my OCD is being triggered immensely. It’s causing friction between me and my partner. And money is nearly non-existent. I have let insurance I waste $150 on a month (I have multiple cats and plans) and it doesn’t seem to cover much.

Anyone please if you could offer anything that would be great. Advice, insight, etc. anything.

Thank you 💔🫶🏻 we love him dearly and want to help him as best we can.

Edit: yall can we be normal and nice in the comments for once please. I don’t understand what the heck I did to be getting attacked. I’m already under so much stress. Saying “he clearly doesn’t like your home” or “you sound like a shitty owner” or “put him a in a shelter” or “stop blaming your problems on the cat you shitty owner” type stuff, can we not? Is it necessary? I’m not blaming my issues on my cat. I’m saying that these issues are increasing my stress and therefore increasing my other mental health issues. Sorry if that wasn’t the right thing to say, I can’t predict how everyone might feel. Sorry.!!

General Advice Does anyone know what my cat is doing? I’m really worried.

Hi everyone!
I’m really worried about my cat and hoping someone might recognize what’s happening in these videos.
She’s been making these strange sounds, almost like she’s trying to cough something up, vomit, or struggling to breathe. I honestly can’t tell what she’s doing, but it doesn’t seem normal, and I’m concerned something might be wrong.
I’ve attached videos so you can see and hear what I mean.
Has anyone experienced something similar with their cat? Does this look and sound more like coughing, an asthma attack, trying to bring up a hairball, or difficulty breathing?
I’d really appreciate any insight, especially from anyone whose cat has had similar episodes.
I understand that Reddit can’t replace a veterinarian visit, but I’d love to hear your experiences.

Additional information:
Poster age: Adult
Country: Middle East
Vet info: Veterinary care is available, but very expensive.
Main issue: Repeated coughing, gagging, or choking-like sounds. Unsure whether she’s trying to vomit or having difficulty breathing.
Cat age: Approximately 2 years old
Cat sex: Female, spayed
Financial situation: I’m concerned about being able to afford extensive veterinary testing or treatment.

Thank you so much! ❤️

This is Gonzo! He’s 5 months old and has been neutered, vaccinated, all that jazz.
He is VERY vocal, like to the point where I need to put earplugs in sometimes. He’s a chatty guy which I love but my main issue is him with food. He screams until I feed him, eats his food, then screams to try and get the other cat’s food. And he will start his meowing everyday at 7:30am and doesn’t quit even after he gets what he wants. (He has millions of toys and I play with him and give him cuddles)
He also tries to eat food off of plates. I literally saw him walk over to me with a red face bc he ate my roommates pasta when she wasn’t looking.
I guess my question is-
How can I get him to stop being so gluttonous and loud??? Will he grow out of this?
