Eye Issues Do I need to be more worried about my cats eye?

1.1k Upvotes

Hi Im 20 (from the US) and awhile back I took my 8 year old cat to the vet to look at a bump above her right eye, the vet told me not to worry that its a wart but since she's not opening her eye all the way cause of it we should schedule to get it removed. I have had to delay this cause of money issues since it will cost around $250-350 dollars which i didn't have. Now its been awhile (a month or so) and my mom rescheduled the vet visit to the day before we go on vacation for 3 days, we planned on her calling to push it back just a little more cause I wouldn't want to leave right after her surgery. But just tonight I noticed her eye seems a little cloudy and I am not sure what to do or what this could mean. Any advice is appreciated. My cat has not shown any signs of moodiness or discomfort so I wasn't too worried until this cloudiness.

Edit: I will definitely be taking her in its just a matter of when and paying with the cross country trip being so soon if necessary id be willing to stay behind i just feel bad cause i didnt pay for myself for this trip.

And I want to add that I swear I was holding her very nicely by the jaw and she was not resisting, just a bit confused! Normally I am very wary about respecting her physical comfortability. the other photos of cats and memes are very funny though, thank you for the laugh.

Behavioral Issue Behavior of male towards younger female

1.0k Upvotes

So we got a kitten, turned out to be female. Now they both play a lot but sometimes the male Pins her to the ground by grabbing her throat, neck or cheek. Are we still in the Phase of him correcting her behavior if he doesnt let go after she starts squeaking? Male is neuered, youngling is gonna be in January.

I dont known if breaking things up id the correct decision but im not sure at which point i need to intervene. We also have an adult female but he doesnt interact like this with her and never has.

Male is 4, kitten about 16 weeks.

Tldr: is my male orange cat still diciplining or overstepping.

Edit: vet visit is in two days, and we always break them up if he does this. I just wanted reassurance that it is the correct decision.

Update Me and my cat freaking out after neutering

Post image
513 Upvotes

Hi. I'm at an emergency vet and they're checking him rn, still don't know. I'm gonna take some time to answer questions from the other post like this because I feel very overwhelmed between making sure my other cats had everything covered before I left, updating my boyfriend who's on a trip 5 hours away, talking to their usual vet who is making me feel like ass (definately not on purpose) and dealing with the spokeswoman from the community animal association who is being passive agressive about my cat having issues after the surgery.

So, first of all, I can't take him back to the clinic where they operated him because it wasn't in a clinic. My community has an animal activist association that monthly/bi-weekly does campaigns to vaccinate, deworm, do bloodwork and neuter pets. They draw deals with different vet professionals and they do the surgeries for lower prices to help people in need care foe their pets. I live with my boyfriend and our 3 kitties which we can take care of perfectly but it's not like we have money to spare, so we usually reach out to them for vaccines and exams.

The process is completely legal, ethical and done by professionals, in a clean, desinfected space. I'm not saying there can't be issues, but just to make clear that is not like a shady organization or anything. Lots of people from the community vouch for them, I had no reason to not trust them, and they did take good care of my kitty during the whole thing. But now, that woman is a different story, she pisses me off because she's so pasive agressive when there isn't even need to be, I send her the videos and ask if that's normal, since I can't contact the vet directly, she tells me that every cat reacts different and to not worry. He continues to have the symptoms so I ask what meds they used (which is a COMPLETELY NORMAL QUESTION BFFR) and she told me with a bad attitude and said "he could be reacting to the dewormer but vets love to hate on neutering)

Anyway, mean lady aside, I texted our vet, the thing is she doesn't work on sundays so it's her free day, still I called because I was going crazy and she was understandably annoyed. I then just left him in the room with his sister and went to get ready to take him.

When I got back to him to put him in the carrier he was doing better, way more calm, still pacing but not as erratically, and not panting anymore. He also was demanding cuddles and purring

Update within the update: I just got out of the vet. They took his vitals and everything was ok besides his breathing being agitated. The nurse told me that even agitated he was circulating oxygen fine and his breathing is clear. She also told me that his temperature was just in the limit of high and normal, which could mean he did had a fever and got better by the time we arrived.

They took him in for observation and I go pick him back up in like 4 hours, overall everything good. They examined the would and told me it was as perfect as it could be and that he wasn't in pain, they also sprayed him with what I think was feromones and he instantly stopped crying, so I'm assuming it was very likely anxiety.

Anyways, thanks a lot to everyone who replied and gave me a light on what it could have been. Hopefully I'll update again tomorrow when the effects of the anesthetic have fully worn out.

Behavioral Issue Cats left paw seizing up

Please help, my cats paw has been seizing up as shown in video, we couldn’t take her to the vet today as it’s closed on Sunday. I’m incredibly worried for her wellbeing, does anybody know what this could be a symptom of? I’m 19M USA she is a 9 year old female cat who has been spayed.

Behavioral Issue Is this head pressing?

Thumbnail gallery
318 Upvotes

Currently waiting for vet to schedule an appointment with me sometime this week.

I’m 30, posting from the US/NYC. I can afford vet care / have support to afford it if I can’t (mom, older brother.)

Male cat (Tony, age 4, neutered) has been sleeping with his head pressed down often now. He used to do this on and off in the past but he’s always healthy for his yearly vet check ups.

Tony has a history of hitting his head a lot (he throws himself onto the floor for belly rubs and often slams his head into the wooden floors).

He has some quirks like walking on the baseboard heater (the baseboard sticks out) with his front two legs.

I was going to take him sooner before his annual visit to check his vision because he sometimes gets scared of his bowl, water bubbles, and other random things. I was suspecting thats why he’s not a very good hunter (or I’m comparing him to my late cat who may have just been a really good hunter and the bar’s too high).

(I love Tony, but I watched him and the other cat Georgie trying to kill a moth for 40 minutes. All dumb and dumber (endearment) did was make the moth fly at my face for the entire 40 minutes. Hunting is not their thing.)

I’m just worried it could be neurological and I’d just like to brace myself because I don’t quite know what that means or what to expect or if there’s anything to do or if it’s one of those: ‘just watch him and see if something gets worse and come back’ situations.

General Advice Cat acts different since ex moved out

Post image
247 Upvotes

I (25F) live in an apartment with my two cats. They are brother and sister from the same litter, both 8 years old. Left in the picture is Chenaya (F), right in the picture is Kenji (M). Both are spayed/neutered. My (ex)boyfriend used to live here as well, sadly we broke up and he moved out last week. My male cat is very attached to my ex. Since he moved out, I noticed that my cat acts distant towards me, which was not the case beforehand. He is less vocal, less cuddly, he eats less and he is not interested in playing.
Now I also noticed that he started peeing on the couch. This is something he does when he is mad.
There are two litterboxes which I clean everyday or every two days. I know this can be a sign of an urinary infection, but this was tested last month and everything was normal. I suspect it is a behavioural issue. Vet is contacted anyway to be sure about this.

Does anyone have any advice on how to stop or prevent this? Or anything I can do to comfort my cat?

More info: We live in Belgium. We go to the vet regularly because of other medical issues, vet is accessible and affordable.

TLDR: male cat acts distant since ex moved. Cat pees on couch instead of litterbox.

To preface, I’m 23F in the US and Pluto (white/cream) is the first cat I’m taking care of by myself (our family has had cats in the past). I live in an apartment with two other roommates and each of us have a cat. All cats in the apartment are neutered and are 1-2 years old. Sunny,

Update Update: My cat got neutered yesterday and we're not freaking out anymore!

Hi!! Doing another update on this post https://www.reddit.com/r/CATHELP/s/7ZzyPC1Ku9

It's the next day and the baby is doing so well! Last night we got back from the vet and I left him alone in the room no not overwhelm him, and a little later went to give him food and he ate like he had never eating in his life lol. He got out of the carrier and was pacing around but not as freakily as before. They sprayed feromones on his blanket and that calmed him down a lot, apparently it was all anxiety, his vitals, blood pressure, and gums were all fine, he wasn't having trouble breathing either. Right before we left to the vet he wasn't panting anymore and was actually going for cuddles and puring

I left him with his sister during the night so he wouldn't be alone, and they were both very calm and cuddly. Today when I woke up I checked on him first thing and he seems as lively as usual! Still eating like he hadn't seen food in a month hahah he's been very playful overall so I've kept him in the room with his sister while I watch to avoid him injuring himself, she's very gentle when playing anyway and runs away when things get rough.

I also got a crate/cage, as I show in one of the pictures, I put his blanket and left it open so he can go in himself and doesn't learn to be forced in, because since yesterday he was trying to climb everywhere I'm scared he might get too energized and begin to try and escape the room or climb where he shouldn't, so to be safe and able to time him out if he's putting himself at risk.

I have to leave for work in like an hour, and I'm not sure if leave him alone in the room or leave him with sis or leave him in the crate, I tried to prep the room as safe as possible but since it's our office the desks are still there with different stuff (like notebooks, computer and paper stuff, nothing dangerous to him), but I think leaving him in the crate for multiple hours would be cruel idk. And also his other brother gets lonely if he's alone for a long time (last night he slept with me so he wasn't alone)

Right now they're all 3 in the room with him and resting and grooming each other, I'm getting ready for work and less worried about the whole situation, my boyfriend comes back tomorrow afternoon and since he wfh he can take care of him while I'm at work.

Also checked the incision and everything looks good, in general all his health, the surgery area and his mind seem as good as usual.

I got a lot of comments of very polarized comments o the other post, on one side people telling me it's expected due to the anesthetic and to just monitor and on the other side people telling me my cat was about to die. I think that upset me a little since well, I know it was an emergency but I think you shouldn't tell someone who's already worried sick about their cat that it's gonna die soon, without really knowing what's going on. I'm not saying to just let the cat be and the issue solve itself because thats neglectful and cruel, but I came to Reddit because I didn't know if that was a normal reaction to meds/anesthetic before I put kitty through more stress by taking him to emergency care, since other friends and people with cats were telling me that he seemed okay besides emotionally distressed (just like mommy!! /j), and I want to thank everyone who kindly suggested to have him check either way to be sure, and also those who rose different possibilities of what could be going on without straight up telling me my cat has 7 types of cancer and will die the next minute xd

And also something I forgot to mention!! I live in a tropical country (Costa Rica) and it's usually hot/humid. Thankfully not enough to provoke a heat stroke in most people or animals, however I always leave the babies with the fan on when in a room, and Sorbeto specially loves to lay down in front of it! I don't have ac and it's not common to find homes with ac here, so I can't do much about temperature sadly. I added the heated blanket in case he was cold but he refuses to lay in the bed whenever it's on hahah and after turning it off and cooling down he went to lay there

Behavioral Issue PLZ HELP ME!!

• Upvotes

I am so concerned for my female cat she is 1.5 years old I have already been to the vet once this year for her ears because she could not stop itching them and it costed me a fortune. I don’t have money to take her to the vet at all right now and she’s acting super weird so I’m really concerned. Please someone that knows what this is please help me out. She is meowing a ton, she was running and jumping across everything for like 60 seconds a few minutes ago. Just acting super weird. Won’t stop itching her ears either. Going to try and attach a picture of inside of her ear still new to this. I would love to try and clean her ears I don’t have solution but I have pads and q tips but I read online you’re not supposed to clean it if it’s infected. I’m afraid this might be mites which I definitely don’t have the money to fix right now, she is also not fixed yet.

Breathing Issues Is this normal breathing?

Angel is a 7 year old female spayed, shes a tad bit overweight if that matters (around 11lbs or 4.9kg) she seems normal, eating, purring, sleeping, drinking water, affectionate. We just got a new kitten about a month ago and shes.. adjusting. We have another cat who isnt breathing like this but shes also a lot skinnier (7 yr old female, around 6 or 7 pounds) Angel recently got a cut on her back, exposing a whole from what I'm guessing is where she got chipped. Posting from the US. Don't know if i should contact a vet yet but I can take her to an emergency one if needed.

Behavioral Issue Cat has an appointment to get snipped in 10 days, but he’s dying to outside and I don’t know what to do until then (long context below)

*pls ignore the hoover and the broken part of the door, that was my cat who broke it the other day trying to get out!!!

Hello, so I recently adopted a cat off the streets about 2 months ago. He’s male, we don’t know exactly his age but the vet and we think he’s around a year old, he has a youthful young adult look & personality about him.

When we first adopted him he was quite malnourished and skinny, we could feel his spine & bones petting him. He’s since had a few health & skin problems (worms, & ringworm) but he’s been & still is being actively treated for them and has received his vaccinations.

We live in an apartment building with a decent sized terrace, part of it is closed, the other part an open terrace. Our apartment building is of several of the same style buildings , built in a circle around a block with a large open garden/ path way between the buildings. We live in a residential neighbourhood not close to the city centre so it’s pretty quiet & calm.

I take our cat out regularly to play and run around behind our apartment in the garden, and he’s gotten used to having a harness on him, and I’ll let him off the leash supervised while constantly staying a couple metres away to give him the space to run around, jump, climb trees etc. I’ll immediately put him on the leash if I see another cat or dog, and usually he’s been pretty well behaved other than hiding in bushes too long where we struggle to reach him.

My problem is in the last 2 weeks, i think particularly as he’s gotten much better and is now a healthy weight, and has been dewormed & is being treated for his skin issues, he’s become increasingly impatient and aggressive when I take him outside. He was so much sweeter at the beginning, and my theory is that he was so poorly his hormones weren’t functioning well - now he’s healthier & had energy, it seems his testosterone has kicked in full blast this week. I’ve seen him spraying on bushes when we’re outside, he gets really angry and aggressive when he smells the urine of another animal, I let him run around freely for over an hour every time and recently when I go to pick him up to go home, he’s started hissing and growling at me the whole way. He has scratched me too the other day when we were outside. Recently too he’s MORE stressed and aggressive when I bring him back inside after being outside, he needs at least an hour to cool and calm down by himself.

So I booked an appointment to get him snipped, which is in 10 days. Before I thought to do it in a couple of months from now, as I had already spent several hundreds on his treatment, and as he was sick and just taken off the street and his behaviour was not bad at all, I thought it might do him good to have time to fully recover, get used to being at home with us, as it’s quite a stressful procedure, and the plus was also to give me time financially to take care of it - but now since his behaviour changed I knew I had to ASAP.

Now he’s meowing and screaming at the door, he’s constantly meowing at me to go outside, he even broke the bottom part of my door while I was at work one day trying to escape. He just paces around screaming meowing asking to be let out & I feel so bad to keep him cooped up in my apartment, not to mention as he was ringworm (still being treated) he’s strictly limited to only my living room, kitchen and terrace. It feels cruel to keep him cooped up all day but he just seems more stressed after letting him out. I do play with him as well for at least an hour everyday, making sure he’s running around but it’s still not enough. My ask is should I keep him inside for the next 10 days until his surgery? And any advice in general for his behaviour would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Eye Issues Retinal Detachment getting worse

Post image
39 Upvotes

My 17 year old cat Navi started having vision issues in the past three or so months so I took her to the vet and they quickly noticed that she has retinal detachment. They ran a bunch of tests and couldn't find anything besides a potential heart murmur/arrhythmia. They also couldn't get a blood pressure reading on her both visits. They basically said they dont know whats causing it but the only options going forward is to have a biopsy under anesthesia done in a different city which will most likely be more harm than potential good. It seems to be getting worse; the discoloration was not noticable at first glance like it is now. Im not sure where to go from here besides just making her as comfortable as possible for the time she has left. Do you think I should get a second opinion? Is this the normal ocular degeneration that comes with retinal detachment or is it something more serious that needs to be immediately addressed? My vet is actually the best in my city and I recently switched to them from a different one that I did not have good experience with.

I missed the text at the bottom of the screen before I posted so I didnt get to see everything they wanted me to include in the post but I live in the US.

General Advice Sweet girl, swollen stomach

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hello friends. This sweet girl appeared on my back porch yesterday. Shes safe and warm inside now.

Shes a young cat, less then a year im sure, and pretty skinny. Shes eating with gusto, drinking and peeing in the litter box. But her stomach up close to her ribs is pretty swollen and rock hard.

Im assuming pregnant or wormy. I am planning to bring her to the vet, our other cats have a check up next week anyway. Id love to go ahead and deworm her now but im worried of hurting any potential kittens.

Is there any external markers i could look for? She hasn't pooped in the box yet so I cant look for worm segments.

Sorry no pics of the swollen stomach. She wont sit still for more then a few seconds. Constantly rubbing and rolling around for loves.

Poster is of legal age in the USA, vet is accesible and scheduled, cat age and spay status unknown. Minimal financial constraints.

TLDR: sweet cat showed up skinny with swollen abdomen.

•adopted from a box in a populated city after work last august
•vaxxed
•not fixed yet no issues regarding fixing yet we are on the top floor of my apartment building and he is scared to go outside / no aggression / no spraying
•didn’t need any special kitten milk or supplementation when i took him in and had him checked out but he was still very young

my cat literally won’t let me do anything. anytime i sit down, he plops down on me. it’s debilitating on my days off i just wanna rest all day with him and do nothing to disturb him lmfao.
but even when i sit down to take a break from genuinely- anything, i,e.: doing my makeup, cleaning, coming back from errands, sitting around for a sec idk
HES THERE IN .2 SECONDS FLAT, IN MY LAP.

love him so much but why doesn’t he wanna do anything else w me? 😂😩

i got a wearable cat carrier to beat the bed / couch rot he induces within me, maybe this will help him receive cuddles and also allow me to do things

has anyone else tried a cat carrier? this is slightly embarrassing lmao oh no my cat loves me to much but srsly what’s the word on cat carriers

Breathing Issues Cat Breathing normally??

My cat is One year old and stays at my parents place.

Noticed her having labored breathing. She is eating food and playful. But noticed this breathing 2 days ago. She sometimes coughs / seems like she's going to be vomit but doesn't.

Is it normal?!

Dental Issue Is this a sign of a future trip to the dentist or something benign?

I noticed this behaviour from my 3 year old neutered male the last couple weeks. Can happen on both sides, and not always. He is purring and smiling, but seems a bit uncomfortable maybe? I have no problem taking him to the vet, but would rather not if it's not necessary as it's stressful for him

Behavioral Issue Cat keeps pawing at our face while we sleep

Post image
17 Upvotes

TLDR: Our oldest cat will not stop waking up my partner to feed her, using a paw to the face as her form of wakeup call.

Baby, pictured above, is roughly 5 years old and we have has her since she was 1; she was fixed when we adopted her. Generally speaking she is a calm, well mannered cat who doesn't cause too many issues other than this. She will not stop pawing at my girlfriend's face while she is sleeping.

This is a more recent behavior as of a year or 2 ago and from the beginning it has been something we have tried to correct. Our first thought was to crate her at night and let her out in the morning when it is time for breakfast, roughly from 11pm until 5 am. This worked for a little while but it ended up with Baby peeing and sometimes even pooping in her crate. We stopped the crate after this occurred.

Our solution since then has been that I stay awake roughly from 4am until 5am to "keep watch" so that my girlfriend can sleep peacefully. Baby has never been aggressive with this, no claws just paws.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Found this kitten 2 nights ago and took it in, it’s drinking water when I present it to it but she won’t eat wet food, or bottle feed and I’m getting worried. She’s not showing any symptoms of being sick other then a runny nose and maybe some congestion, no throwing up or diarrhea or none of that. I’m worried and idk what to do. She whines occasionally and can jump down from a counter so i don’t think anything is immediately wrong. Idk anything about the age or anything else. I’m gonna call the vet tmr I just don’t know if I can do something now

General Advice Does this email to the shelter look OK, or is there something I should have included?

Post image

(Photo of my cat, NOT included in email) Email as follows:

I'm disabled so I'm hoping to narrow down a cat for adoption before I come in.

I have a 7yo male cat who lost his best friend, a 17yo female cat. He's been very depressed & withdrawn. He LOVES LOVES LOVES other cats & even dogs who have visited, he's a very social little guy. Has no fear, incredibly sweet.

Looking for a very "cat-friendly" cat, because he'll want to snuggle & be close. Do you have any cats (senior preferred but open to any!) that you think might mix well with him? Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Ally

Kitten Help Is this play behavior okay??

Hi! I am 26 and I got two kittens from the humane society about a month and a half ago. They are male and female and are neutered/spayed. They are 3 months old littermates, and I get so worried about how rough they play. My male cat will be aggressive to my female cat and she will cry out and hiss at him and he will still pursue her. Usually when this happens I try to distract him with a toy or separate them so he cools down. I recorded them “playing” and have attached it so that you guys can see what I mean. She cries out and hisses at the end of the video, and afterwards I separated them. Just my main question is: is this normal kitten playing or is he bullying her?? And if he is bullying, how can I ensure their relationship stays healthy so they can live together forever.

Behavioral Issue My cat suddenly started hissing at me

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I'm 38 and my cat just turned 8 years old. She is a spayed female. I have raised her since she was 5 weeks old. A few months ago she was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease and we started her on an Rx diet. She has been doing well on that diet and as of last week her levels were much improved. But a new problem has started.

She has started hissing quite a lot, when she used to hardly ever (maybe once a year tops, if I picked her up when she didn't want to be or something, but it was always short and never anything too intense as far as the hissing). In the past two weeks she has hissed at me and only me in our house. She never hisses at my husband or my grandmother, who recently moved in. I also notice she never hisses when my husband is present.

The hissing started two weeks ago. The first time it happened I went to pick her up and she hissed. I put my hand under her belly/chest area when I tried to pick her up. I was worried she was in pain in this area so my husband and I checked and nothing appeared to be wrong. Last week we had a vet appointment and the vet also said nothing was wrong in that area. The vet did some x-rays and was able to see she might be developing some minor arthritis in her left hip. She gave me some supplements to add to her wet food for joint health, which I have been doing daily.

Now this is the weirdest part. She started hissing at me and only me when I am walking down the hallway or into the hallway of our house. We moved into this house a year ago, and this has never been an issue before here or any other place we have lived. Just this morning she hissed as I stepped into the hallway from the bedroom and ran away into the guest room that is directly next to our bedroom. Before this happened we both had been laying in bed together. I gave her a pet and then got up. She got up with me and jumped off the bed and went into the hallway first. I don't think I startled her, because she got up off the bed with me. I want to reiterate that she only hisses at me, not my husband at all even when he is walking down the hallway or goes to pick her up.

She still comes to me for pets when she wants and generally likes to be near me. She still sleeps with me and likes to make sure she's touching me when we go to bed. It may be worth noting that my husband works a standard job 8 hours a day but I am home all day. So she has a lot more exposure to me.

Emotionally this is starting to get difficult for me. I love this cat, she is my baby. I raised her since she was 5 weeks old. She never hisses at me like this until the last two weeks. The hallway situation specifically has happened at least 4 times in the last two weeks. The only thing I can think of that has changed is my grandma moved in, but she's living downstairs in a completely separate area of the house. My cat also likes my grandma and likes to go downstairs to spend time with her, so I don't think she's unhappy that my grandma moved in.

I feel like I must be doing something wrong, I'm failing her somehow, or I've harmed her in some way without knowing.

I don't know what to do and feel a bit distraught. Any advice is appreciated, especially from those with similar experiences. Thank you.
