Sorry for the long post, but I feel I need to explain the whole situation to give you a clear picture of what I have been going through.
I have been dealing with accusations of infidelity throughout most of my married life for almost 12 years, apart from a few periods when we were occupied with COVID or other life issues. We have two children, and our youngest is now 12. I have continued trying to keep our marriage together because I want to give our children enough love, stability, and support to grow up and become independent. For a long time, I have felt that once they are old enough to stand on their own feet, I might simply walk away and live a quiet, solitary life or things will take turn.
How it all started
The accusations began shortly after our youngest child was born.
My wife had arranged for a babysitter to look after our son for one day while we dealt with the hospital visit and the birth of our daughter. The babysitter was at our house for only that day. I was perfectly capable of looking after the children, and my wife had already prepared and frozen enough food to last us several days.
After she returned from the hospital, we were exhausted and adjusting to life with a newborn. We were following the usual three-hour cycle of feeding, cleaning, and repeating.
Then, one night, out of nowhere, my wife accused me of cheating on her with the babysitter.
I was completely shocked. My wife had been the one who found and arranged the babysitter. I had only called the babysitter once or twice to check on our son while she was looking after him. I had absolutely no interest in the woman. My attention was entirely focused on our newborn daughter and our family.
My wife claimed that whenever I left the house, usually to take our son outside because he was struggling to adjust to the arrival of his new sibling, I was somehow contacting the babysitter.
The argument escalated. She tried to pull me by my shirt, and I slapped her in response. I deeply regret hitting her. I was emotionally overwhelmed and reacted in a way I should not have. I still struggle to understand how things escalated so quickly, especially at such a vulnerable time in our lives.
However, I was furious about being accused of something I had not done, particularly when we had just welcomed a newborn into our family.
That was the beginning of a pattern that has continued for years.
Years of accusations without evidence
Since then, whenever we have an argument, the accusations of infidelity eventually return. She portrays herself as loyal and faithful while insisting that I am cheating on her.
Over time, the accusations have expanded beyond the original babysitter.
My wife began monitoring my online status on social media and messaging apps such as WhatsApp. She would claim that I was online at the same time as another woman and take this as evidence that we were communicating. Sometimes she would make these accusations even when my phone was in my pocket or connected to Android Auto while I was driving.
I repeatedly explained that I was not contacting anyone and had no interest in another woman, but she had already made up her mind.
At one point, she also claimed that a mutual acquaintance had seen me with another woman. I have never had a romantic or sexual relationship with another woman during our marriage, nor have I gone on one-to-one outings with another woman. I have attended occasional team dinners and work events, but nothing beyond that.
Despite my explanations, the accusations continued.
Our marriage came close to divorce several times. I asked her family to help us resolve the situation, and they tried to mediate between us.
On a couple of occasions, she secretly left a phone recording at home and later interpreted ordinary background sounds, such as someone walking, as evidence that I had brought another woman into the house and had sex with her while the children were home.
I was at home looking after the children, and I had no idea how ordinary sounds could be interpreted in this way.
I have never been particularly social, and I rarely go anywhere alone for extended periods. Perhaps once or twice a year, I would attend a dinner or a work-related event. I was also the sole earner for our family, so going to the office was a necessity. Nevertheless, I felt as though I constantly had to defend myself against accusations that had no basis in reality.
Eventually, a friend became involved after I confided in him about what was happening. He and his wife knew both of us and did not believe I was involved with the babysitter. The babysitter had also looked after their children. My friend's wife confirmed that the babysitter had since married and had no connection with me.
She even told my wife that I was not the kind of person who pursued women or attracted that sort of attention.
After almost four years of these accusations, my wife eventually agreed to delete the babysitter's number from her phone. Before doing so, she had noticed that the babysitter appeared online at the same time as me and took that as confirmation of her suspicions. I still do not know why the online statuses appeared that way.
Once the number was deleted, things gradually calmed down. Our relationship improved, and for a while, we were able to live more like a normal married couple again.
Trying to make the marriage work
I am not particularly expressive with words, but I try to show my love through actions. I take care of my wife's needs, often before she even asks. I buy her the latest phones, give her flowers, and get her gifts for special occasions.
During this period, she also spent an extended time visiting her family. I travelled occasionally with friends but sent her pictures and updates so she would feel reassured.
However, something had already changed in me. I had started anticipating situations in which I might need to defend myself. I even deleted the app that she associated with the suspicious online activity because I wanted to remove another source of conflict.
I was trying to prevent misunderstandings before they happened, even though I had done nothing wrong.
The accusations started again
A few years later, my wife became very close friends with another married woman. They spent a lot of time together and went out regularly.
I had actually encouraged my wife to build her own social circle because we were living outside our home country, and I thought it was important for her to have friends and a life outside the family.
Their friendship continued for a couple of years. We even visited the woman's house on a family trip, where I met her husband.
I had no idea what the two women discussed privately, and I had absolutely no romantic interest in my wife's friend.
Then, out of nowhere, my wife started accusing me of being involved with this woman. She said I was repeating things the woman had said, although I had no idea what she was talking about. I sometimes feel that I can anticipate what my wife is thinking, but I had no private contact or relationship with this woman.
Once again, online activity became the focus of her suspicions. She claimed that the other woman and I were appearing online at the same time.
After COVID, we had to return to the office, so I was spending time outside the house while my wife remained at home. This gave her more opportunities to question where I was, what I was doing, and whether I was communicating with this woman.
Sometimes, I would return from the office and be accused of having been in bed all day or doing something inappropriate because my shirt appeared to have wrinkles or marks on it.
The arguments became loud and unpleasant, with swearing from both sides. I acknowledge that I have also shouted and used inappropriate language during these fights.
The difference now is that our children are much older, and they are witnessing these arguments. My wife sometimes involves them in our disagreements, and I have repeatedly told her that they should not be dragged into adult problems.
The effect on my mental health and our intimacy
I can cope with many of the difficulties of married life, but these repeated accusations affect me deeply.
Whenever she accuses me of cheating, something changes inside me. I feel hurt, angry, and emotionally disconnected from her. I do not want to look at her, touch her, or be physically intimate with her.
The following day, however, she may behave normally, particularly when I am at home or following my usual routine.
I have tried to explain that trust is fundamental to a relationship. I have told her that these suspicions may be coming from her own imagination or fears, rather than from anything I am actually doing.
At one point, she suggested that our entire family install a location-tracking app like another family we know uses. I told her that I did not believe another app would solve the problem because the underlying issue was trust. I feared that even if we installed it, she would simply find something else to interpret negatively.
That fear has increasingly become my reality.
On one occasion, I had to travel out of town for a couple of days for work. I informed her in advance and showed her that I was travelling with colleagues. However, when a technical problem prevented her from reaching me once, she became extremely upset and accused me of being away with someone else and partying.
The trip was strictly work-related.
Now, even the thought of travelling alone causes me considerable stress. Sometimes, when I go somewhere by myself, she tries to arrange for one of the children to accompany me, even when the activity is something they would not enjoy, such as walking around with my friends or running errands that do not interest them.
I feel as though I can no longer do ordinary things without being suspected of something.
Another attempt to reset our relationship
Recently, my wife attended a family-related event and made an unusually dramatic change in her appearance and preparations. I was surprised because it seemed very different from how she normally presented herself.
I questioned the change, and it led to another argument. She recorded the entire conversation, apparently to use it later.
After she returned, I apologised for my part in the argument and asked her why our relationship had become so difficult. I told her that I wanted us to reset our marriage and move forward.
We had several discussions and eventually agreed to give the relationship another chance. One of the understandings was that she would stop accusing me of infidelity unless she had some concrete evidence.
I told her I was willing to be transparent and provide reasonable access to my devices if it would help rebuild trust.
She already knows the passwords to my phone and laptop, although she sometimes forgets them. The children also use these devices. I have told her that I am not hiding anything and that, if she wants to check something, she can sit with me and go through it together.
My devices and accounts are not deliberately hidden from her, and my phone and laptop are generally at home even when I am sitting outside or have gone out.
After this attempted reset, I made a conscious effort to manage my own reactions. I tried not to respond to every accusation or let her mood determine mine. I wanted to stop escalating arguments and focus on the good moments we still shared.
Unfortunately, the accusations continued on and off.
She would say I was not going to the office but was instead meeting or calling the other woman. Sometimes, when she got into the car after I had travelled alone, she would notice that the seat position had changed and ask who had been moving the settings.
I tried to respond patiently, but I felt that my limits were constantly being tested.
Eventually, I told her that if she genuinely believed I was a cheater, she needed to decide what she wanted to do rather than continue making my life miserable with repeated accusations.
The difficult part is that I still love her despite everything that has happened. I do not want to leave her simply because our relationship has become so painful.
The suspicions have expanded beyond infidelity
After all these years, I have tried to focus on the good moments and enjoy the times when we get along.
I recently asked her directly why she believed I was cheating. She said she had a bad dream about me and that too many things were pointing in that direction.
She has since installed indoor cameras in our home and has access to the recordings. She also saves footage, which makes me feel that she is collecting material to use against me later.
Her interests and behaviour have changed considerably, and she seems to have developed a deeply negative view of me. Many of the problems that happen around us are somehow blamed on me, and I am increasingly portrayed as the worst person in the world.
I have asked her several times that, if she genuinely considers me such a terrible person, why does she not leave me or pursue a divorce? I have reached a point where I feel my patience and mental health are deteriorating.
The lack of trust has also destroyed our emotional intimacy.
She sometimes says that we can still maintain a physical relationship despite our problems. I have explained that intimacy is not just physical. There needs to be emotional closeness and trust as well. When someone repeatedly accuses you of being unfaithful and makes hurtful remarks about your character, it becomes very difficult to feel emotionally connected or desire physical intimacy.
Now, the accusations have expanded even further.
She not only accuses me of cheating but also claims that I am hacking her phone, listening to her conversations, or somehow accessing her private communications. She says that when I repeat a word or phrase she has used in a conversation, it proves that I have been listening to her.
I have no such access or control over her phone.
Even ordinary activities have become suspicious. If I take a different route home from work, it becomes an issue. If I stop to buy groceries, it becomes an issue. If something about my location appears unusual, she assumes I am manipulating the tracking information.
She now has access to my location, but she still believes I am somehow manipulating it. The same applies to the home cameras: even though I am not doing anything wrong, I feel that I am constantly being monitored and that the information is being interpreted to fit her suspicions.
She has also started taking phone calls away from me. If a call comes in while I am home, she may move to a corner or go outside to speak privately.
I do not necessarily believe she is cheating on me. However, given everything that has happened, I sometimes wonder whether she is building a case against me or trying to create a particular narrative about our relationship.
Our children are becoming involved
Another painful development is that I feel our children are increasingly being drawn into the conflict.
I have generally been the stricter parent. If I say no to games, television, or certain activities, I expect that decision to stand. My wife and I had previously agreed that she would take a softer approach while I maintained discipline and boundaries to help the children develop responsibility.
Now, I feel that this difference in parenting is being used to portray me as the bad parent, while she positions herself as the more understanding one.
I am concerned that our children may eventually feel they have to choose sides. They should not have to carry the emotional burden of our marital problems.
What I have found while researching this
I have not approached a lawyer or sought professional family support so far. Most of my attempts to understand the situation have involved reading about similar experiences online, including many Reddit discussions.
During this research, I came across the terms Othello syndrome and pathological jealousy.
From what I have read, I wonder whether my wife's behaviour could be related to some form of pathological jealousy, given the repeated accusations, the lack of convincing evidence, and the way ordinary events seem to be interpreted as proof of infidelity.
I am not trying to diagnose her, and I understand that reading about a condition online does not mean someone has it. I am simply trying to find an explanation for a pattern that I have struggled to understand for almost 12 years.
What confuses me most is that providing reassurance, sharing passwords, explaining my whereabouts, allowing location tracking, and even having cameras in the house have not resolved the problem. Instead, it seems that every new measure creates another opportunity for suspicion.
I feel trapped in a situation where I cannot prove a negative. No matter how transparent I try to be, there always seems to be another explanation for why I must be hiding something.
Where I am now
I am exhausted.
I have spent years trying to keep my marriage together, provide for my family, support my wife, and be present for my children. I have tried explaining, reassuring, sharing information, changing my behaviour to avoid misunderstandings, and giving our relationship another chance.
I know I have made mistakes of my own, particularly when I have lost my temper during arguments. I regret the times I have shouted or said hurtful things, and I do not want to continue living in a cycle of anger and resentment.
At the same time, I cannot keep living as though I am guilty of something I have not done.
I still love my wife, and I want my children to have a stable family. But I also want peace, mutual respect, trust, and the ability to live a normal life without constantly defending myself.
I am beginning to wonder whether this relationship can improve at all if the accusations continue regardless of what I do.
My questions are:
- Has anyone experienced something similar, where a partner repeatedly accuses them of infidelity despite there being no evidence?
- Could this be pathological jealousy or something similar, and how can I approach the situation without making it worse?
- How do you deal with a partner who interprets almost every ordinary activity as evidence of cheating?
- Is there a realistic way to rebuild trust when reassurance, transparency, and monitoring have all failed?
- How can I protect my mental health and my relationship with my children while living in this situation?
- If my wife refuses to acknowledge that there may be a problem, what practical steps can I take to improve the situation?
I am not looking for ways to attack my wife or prove that she is a bad person. I am trying to understand what is happening, how much more I can reasonably do, and whether there is a way forward that does not destroy my mental health or harm my children.
Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to read this long post and share their perspective.
