Welcome to /r/archery! This thread is for newbies or visitors to have their questions answered about the sport. This is a learning and discussion environment, no question is too stupid to ask.

The only stupid question you can ask is "is archery fun?" because the answer is always "yes!"

I've shot on and off as a kid here and there, mostly recurve. My dad is an instructor and RSO for his retirement gig. Well, my 11 daughter started taking up archery a bit more seriously so I thought I should too so we have something fun to do together. Dad recommended a PSE Lazer x, so I picked one up as a birthday gift to myself to help get back into the sport.

This thing is awesome!! I had a little trouble with the sight at first (second hand from my dad) but once I got it all figured out, holy cow. Grouping was yesterday at about 22 yards or so. Can't wait to learn more and get more practice. This sub has been super helpful already

I suck, but man is it fun. šŸ˜Ž 30 yards is still long for me, but I’m having a blast.

Innate Muscular imbalances from the sportar and their possible remedy

• Upvotes

So, on a more serious note, I train quite a few disciplines aside archery, and a question I haven't seen discussed nearly as much as I'd think it should is : How do you guys, especially the professional archers or high volume amateurs deal with the innate muscular imbalances that arise from the sport, is there a sport scientist that has delved into this problem ? Do you guys have any resources (excercise curriculums etc) ?

How do you guys deal with this ?

Cause if I continue like this, I'll be pretty crooked by the time I'm 70

(I'm a personal trainer myself, and I have a pretty good idea of what muscle groups act on each side, and I could reverse engineer a program, but it would be nice to know if someone has already "covered the distance" as in ratios of archery volume to sets/week, cause one wouldn't want to cause more imbalance)

Vintage 110lb hoyt fastflite super slam compound bow

• Upvotes

Here's an old left handed hoyt fastflite super slam compound bow, shooting a 700 grain arrow around 253/258fps quite slow compared to a modern compound, while this sort of draw weight isn't common on a standard bow these days, back in the 80s/90s some completely standard bows could be cranked up to 100lb+

Today i made a target out of an old box and started shooting at it from about 10 meters away for shits and giggles and literally almost hit the middle?? Im overjoyed at this shot and super proud. All the pros are probably gonna dismiss me but im so happy and wanted to share :)

(Other holes are from earlier where I shot from about 2 meters)

Your sickest archery burns and comebacks

Let's have a laugh.

What are the most funniest jokes, burns and shade that have been thrown at your range in a friendly and jokingly manner?

At our club with the most active members it is a continuous banter during the weekend.

I'll start:

Friendly in club competition, only bare bow wooden training bows allowed, asking the compound coach how it was holding more than their let off. Shooting line collapsed in laughter at the same time.

When doing a sports demonstration and asking me what the stabs are needed for on my olympic rig, I generally answer "Front is for Satellite TV, left is for radio, right is 5G, but I still haven't found the one that can find gold every time".

Shooting your arrow in another archer group saying " I just wanted to check if it is my arrows or yours that do not want to stick together"

"If you have tuned everything and you still are not happy, maybe, per chance, just throwing it out there... Could it be, but I'm not sure, the archer?"

" Don't worry, I have seen the face/3D target move, it wasn't your fault"

"Remember, we started doing this because we TOUGHT it was easy, not because it is"

How does your archery club track progress beyond scores?

I run an archery school in Estonia, and I’ve been looking for ways to help archers recognise progress even when their scores aren’t improving yet.
I ended up building a free tool for my club that combines a training diary, physical activity tracking and a coach’s view. I’ve also added XP for training, inspired by Duolingo, and competitions between clubs to make regular practice more engaging.
For those who coach or train at a club: what do you track besides scores? Have things like training streaks, XP or friendly club challenges helped with motivation, or do you prefer a simple training log?
I’d be interested to hear what has actually worked for you.

Truball blade pro vs Stan Sx4

I’m looking at getting a new release aid, I’ve been shooting the uv button and hinge and I quite like them but I’ve ran into issues with both. With the hinge it moves over time and the uv button, if you pull too hard, won’t fire.

So I’m looking at these two as potential replacements. This is a buy once cry once purchase so any and all feedback is welcome.

Things I care/worry about
- sizing, I have small to medium hands and like how slim the UV releases are
- having too much index bias, I really like the uv middle finger bias.

Olympic Recurve Shooting from a knee

Post image
9 Upvotes

I just set up a large heavy canvas sheet as a arrow stop in my basement (also 3d printed soft tips) so my family can practice whenever they want, vs having a 30 min drive to the nearest legal location. The range is short (5.5 yards) but we can at least pratice our draws. Long story short they are all fine but i am 6'4 with a 32 inch draw and my bow hits the ceiling. Is it worth practicing from a knee or will i just be doing more harm than good to my form when i do go to a range and shoot from standing. Olympic recurve/barebow.

Media Is this type of damage repairable on a Simsek?

After 2 months of waiting, my Simsek Sipahi bow arrived this past Monday. When I took it out to shoot the next day, everything seemed like it was going well until I noticed that a large fiberglass splinter had risen from the back of the lower bow limb. I immediately unstrung the bow and reached out to Simsek’s customer support.

I was paranoid about something like this happening, so I had filmed myself opening the package and shooting to show that I was not doing things like overdrawing the bow. Simsek got back to me saying that it may have been a manufacturing defect and will be sending me a new bow.

My question now is if this damage is safely repairable. I have a friend who very graciously offered to attempt a repair on the crack using bonded polyester thread and epoxy. The idea was to repair the limb so I could shoot with it until the replacement arrives. I’m also slightly nervous that if Simsek asks for the bow back, it’ll void the warranty. I haven’t heard of other folks experiencing cracks/other damage needing to send it back, but you never know.

Olympic Recurve Limb tip flutter and a noisy bow on a hoyt GMX with uukha sigmas after tuning, but was better before at a wrong tune.

Hi all, I recently got gifted an original gmx in pristine shape, this is replacing my old win&win winex, which I had the same issues with, but just assumed it was the riser. The thing is, when I shot it for the first time (extremely rough tune, but everything in range except for tillers which were negative, which was due to a misread) it was dead quiet and dead in the hand, without stabilisers or dampeners or anything.

But as soon as I actually tune it, with correct tiller, and going through brace heights, I couldn't get it quiet and theres a hell of a lot of limb flutter post shot. Arrows are correct for my 45lb poundage OTF at 29.25" draw, and Im using Uukha sigmas.

EDIT: u/AlexWFS made a good point to add my tuning process. So I usually check limb alignment first, then add very basic equipment like a medium spring plunger and rest, then a rough tiller and brace height per riser manual (in this case I set it on the low end of the specified value of 8.75", and tiller being 4mm)

Then set up a very quick center shot and temporary nocking point, and I start tuning by ear to find brace height, adding 2 twists to my string at a time through the whole range.

I don't know if it is genuine stingray leather or not but it surely looks like it.

I need to figure out if I can do something differently. I am using thumb draw with a Korean male thumb ring and pine arrows if that helps.

Tips for not gripping riser?

I’m still having issues ā€œgrippingā€ my recurve riser instead of letting it rest in my hand. It’s causing my wrist to flick out when I release and it’s also making me crazy.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks or videos that help with this issue? I’m still working on my foundation, but this is by far the thing I’m struggling with most.

It might be worth noting that I’m a female with small hands and I’m shooting a PSE Razorback 62ā€ 25
#.

Thanks!
