AIO-My sister prioritizes her kids’ sports over important family milestones

• Upvotes

AIO - I want to check myself before doing anything, but AIO over my sister prioritizing her kids’ sports over an important family milestone?

I love my sister, and we generally have a close family. Everyone gets along and we enjoy spending time together when we are in town. However, I think that my sister’s rigid commitment to her kids’ sports schedules is too much.

My husband, kids, and I live several hours away, so we usually visit her family twice a year (Christmastime and during the Summer). Throughout the year, as well as the summer, my sister’s kids are busy with sports that we don’t get a lot of time together. We just visit other relatives and spend time attending her kids’ games when we visit. We may get some dinner after a game. My sister, kids and her husband have also visited us a few times in the past, but in the past 2 years they have not visited. FYI- we stay with my in laws when we visit, and my sister and her family stayed with us when they visited.

Her kids are 6 and 8 and participate in multiple sports throughout the year. I support their activities and I respect the time and commitment involved. I love watching them and make sure to let them know how proud I am of them. They are great kids.

Here’s the current situation: My oldest child will be the first grandchild in our family to graduate from high school this spring. We want to celebrate this milestone with a big family party and are planning to rent a large, upscale house so out of town relatives can stay together for the occasion.
I’m trying to choose a date that works for everyone, especially my sister. I told her we could have the party anytime in June or July and that I would work around her schedule. She told me she didn’t know yet because one sports season ends and another begins right afterward during this time. She wants me to wait until spring to plan.

I’m worried that if I wait too long, the house and venue we want will be booked. I’m okay if she can’t make it. I know there may be no day this summer that will work for them. But I don’t think she is thinking this through. I’m asking her to set aside one day to celebrate her niece. We go to their town for milestone events for her and her family, and make sure they feel supported.

There’s also some history I’d like to note. When our mother was dying in the hospital, my sister continued taking her kids to their scheduled sports games. She missed our mother’s death because she was at a game and didn’t want her children to miss the game. I figured that maybe she was struggling with the reality of losing our mother and was using the kids’ activities as a way to cope.

However, I’m seeing the same pattern. I worry that she is so focused on making sure her kids never miss a game that she’s allowing them to miss other experiences that are meaningful too. It appears there is a definite priority over family/relationships.

I want her to see that being present for the people you love is important too. AIO? And if I’m not, how do I say this without sounding like I’m telling her what to do or make her feel defensive?

AIO for uninviting my best friend from my birthday after what she said about me?

• Upvotes

I’m 23F, and I’ve been friends with my best friend, 24F, since high school. We’ve always been close, and I’ve stood by her through some really difficult times.

My birthday is coming up, and I’ve been planning a small dinner with a few friends. Nothing extravagant, just a nice restaurant, good food, and a chance to celebrate another year of my life.

Last weekend, we were hanging out with some mutual friends when the conversation turned to money and careers. I mentioned that I’d recently gotten a promotion at work and was proud of myself because I’d been working hard to get there.

My best friend laughed and said, “Let’s be honest, you’re not even that good at your job. You just know how to make people like you.”

Everyone went quiet for a moment. I laughed awkwardly because I didn’t want to make things uncomfortable, but honestly, it hurt.

Later, I messaged her privately and told her I didn’t appreciate the comment. Instead of apologizing, she said I was being sensitive and that she was obviously joking.

What made it worse was that another friend told me she’d been making similar comments about my career when I wasn’t around.

I started thinking about other times she’d made little digs at me whenever something good happened in my life. Whenever I achieved something, she’d find a way to minimize it or turn the conversation back to herself.

I decided I didn’t want that energy around me on my birthday, so I told her I was reconsidering the invitation.

She got furious and accused me of using my birthday to punish her. Now she’s telling our mutual friends that I’ve become arrogant since getting promoted.

Some friends think I should just invite her and move on because we’ve been friends for years. Others say I shouldn’t spend my birthday with someone who seems uncomfortable seeing me succeed.

I still care about her, but I’m tired of pretending her comments don’t bother me.

AIO for uninviting my best friend from my birthday dinner over what she said about my career? Or am I throwing away a long friendship over a joke?

I (33f) was messaged by a (30 something f) girl on IG asking me if my (41m) was taken by me because she saw a comment he had tagged me in when she was scrolling on the IG FYP for friends. I asked my (41m) about it and he is accusing me of messaging her first. AIO if I’m crying and hurt?

My man is calling me a stalker and saying that now he’s going to make another private IG without me on it. I called this micro cheating and was confused because this girl messaged asking about me and when I told her she seemed upset and blocked him.

AIO to my husband canceling halloween for us?

• Upvotes

My husband (20), has known that i (20) have always loved halloween. It’s my favorite holiday and he’s known that since we’ve gotten together.

For starters my husband and i had planned on going as yoruichi and kisuke from bleach since i dyed my hair purple about a week ago. However when we looked online nothing would have arrived in time. So i mentioned Light yagami and Misa to which he declined. Then i mentioned like 5 more couples costumes to which he also declined. He said it was my fault nothing would arrive in time even though he encouraged me to dye my hair. I told him wigs are an option for me but he was not having it.

About an hour after looking for costumes for himself (because i told him we didn’t have to do a couples costume if we can’t agree) He said he’s not going to celebrate halloween in general. Some more context is that our friends who are a couple had invited my husband and i to a halloween party which i was super excited about.

Anyways i told him it was selfish of him to all of a sudden just cancel our halloween plans knowing that i had been excited for it. He responded saying that i can go by myself but the history of our relationship shows that it would later turn into an argument.

Im just really upset that out of hundreds of costumes he refuses to choose one or even make an effort to make one of his own which was what i was planning to do after our original idea fell through. He thinks im being OD, but i was seriously excited.

He does this for a lot of things. If something doesn’t go his way it’s cancelled for not only him but me and it’s really frustrating that he cannot seem to work around simple solutions.

AIO? My mom screamed at my 11 year old brother yelling about her wishing she didn’t give birth to him

• Upvotes

I apologize if the grammar is off it’s late and while I’m writing this. And this is a throwaway So I a 19F have an 11 year old brother, and we both sometimes talk about how our mom annoys us sometimes, basically like our mother yells at us sometimes tracks us all day long even when we’re at the house or just with the smallest patience. And my brother when I say this it’s not that I’m calling him an idiot but he kind of slow or just doesn’t understand things not to talk about how sensitive he is and this pisses our mom off. Today however I have never heard her go this far when she told my brother how to do a math equation she was talking very fast,

So my brother could barely understand her and neither could I and I was in the living room as well. My mom got pissed saying he wasn’t listening and my brother got confused and said he was but she was talking too fast and trying to explain himself before my mom just screamed “I could have died bringing someone else into the world but it was your fucking retard who came out”

That’s what she yelled and I remember everything from it my brother started crying and I helped him with the math. And my mom acted like nothing happened, when my dad got home later I told him and he said I’m not fucking joking that it was fine because moms tend to get mad easily. I texted my boyfriend and he is the only one aside me and my brother who thinks that is disturbing. My mom has got mad for no reason in the past i feel like this is a death threat almost and my brother still hasn’t got over it. I’m writing this now because this was a draft I made last night and finished now in the morning. I know how this sounds as overly aggressive but I can’t stop thinking about this, am I overreacting?

AIO for asking two friends to pay me back for a group gift they signed the card for?

• Upvotes

Our friend Rachel bought her first house in August. Six of us agreed in the group chat to get her the espresso machine she'd been talking about all year. It was $312 with tax, so $52 each. I ordered it because I had fast shipping and it would arrive before the party.

Everyone said "yes!!" and "send me your Venmo." I sent it. Two people paid the same day.

The housewarming was September 14. All six of us signed the card. Rachel teared up a little, it was really sweet.

Three weeks later, three people still hadn't paid. I sent one friendly reminder in the chat, no names. Nothing. So I messaged each of them separately. One paid right away and apologized, said she just forgot. The other two said they "didn't realize it was official," and one of them, Brandon, said he'd already brought her a plant so he figured that counted.

He signed the card. His name is right there under "love, the whole gang."

AIO for still wanting that $104 back? The chat goes quiet every time I post now and I hate it.

TL;DR: Six of us agreed to split a $312 housewarming gift. I paid upfront. Two friends signed the card but won't pay their $52, and one says his plant counts.

AIO? I need and objective and honest opinion

• Upvotes

I apologise in advance for the long explanation.

Yesterday was my 30th birthday. Since I graduated, I just stopped feeling the need to have all that fuss around it, to throw big parties, and to be loud about it overall. But for my 30th birthday, I wanted something special. Since I still don't like and don't want a grand celebration, I decided to plan a whole week of different activities so I could remember the anniversary with a smile, make it a great memory, and introduce new interests into my life.

I told this plan to my husband, but he said he didn't want it to be a whole week because he wanted to save more days off from work so that when the December holidays come, he could use them then. I understood that, so we planned a three-day celebration (Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday), and for the rest of the week, we would have dinner with our families for a little celebration with them. I wanted to choose activities that I hadn't done in years, or ones that I had always wanted to do but didn't have the right company for.

The first thing was to visit the theater because I hadn't watched a play in too long. He agreed. The second activity was to go to a gallery. There were all kinds of exhibits from different modern artists, but he straight up refused. He doesn't like those places, and even though it was just for one day and for a special occasion, he still said no. I agreed because I didn't want to pressure him to be something he is not, but I suggested visiting the National Gallery instead because it is like a museum and he wouldn't have to talk to anybody. To this, he agreed. We made a plan for Sunday to be a peaceful day with modest activity and to have a cozy, romantic dinner at home with the two dogs we adore. I had made my own cake the day prior; it looked and tasted great, and my husband liked it very much too. I felt everything was planned—not perfectly, but well. It was all going great in my head.

Sunday came, and I woke up in a good mood. He greeted me with a smile, wished me a happy birthday, and... that was it. No flowers, not even a tiny gesture to make me feel special for the occasion (as simple as making me my morning coffee). He is the type of person who always brings me flowers for any occasion. I brushed it off because sometimes I do tell him he doesn't have to bring me flowers for everything, because DAMN, those bouquets are expensive, but still... it is the only day of my life I turn 30. It is not 27 or 28, and I had told him before how I felt about this day and everything I expected from the week.

So I got up, he congratulated me on my birthday, I made my coffee, and I sat at the table to wake up. After 30 minutes, he brought me chocolates he had ordered from a boutique pastry shop, and they were lovely. There was a handwritten card with wishes that he had asked to be included, and as I was reading it, he kept rushing me because he wanted to taste the chocolates. There were 10 in the box with 5 different flavors. I took one, and he took one. They were delicious but too sweet, so I told him I didn't want to taste them all right now, but he wanted to taste every chocolate because he liked them. I felt stupid because they were for me, and I didn't want to devour them in the first hour.

The morning went on, and he asked me what I wanted to do. At first, there was a festival in the city, but because it was too far away and I didn't think it would suit my idea of fun, I dropped the idea and told him I wanted to visit a bar in the city center. It looked really cool, and an online post announced there would be a flea market hosted inside the bar. I thought this was cool. It was an unpretentious place, we would have fun, order a drink, talk, have a humble afternoon, and I could rummage around for something cool to buy.

We headed out, but through the whole way there—a 40 to 50-minute walk—he just wasn't there mentally. He was distracted, quiet, and not in a good mood. I just felt he was off. I asked him what was wrong, and he said it was nothing, that he was just lost in thought about other things, and he assured me he was feeling great and everything was fine. The whole morning felt plain and average, and now the walk to that place felt more like I was going to run an errand. As we got closer, I told him we didn't have to go, that we could just walk around the center, find a cool coffee shop, and still have a good time. He insisted that since I wanted to see the bar, he would accompany me. We found the place and went in, but it was a total disaster. The flea market was poorly arranged, and the place just wasn't to my taste. I felt like I was in a gutter. So, we took a drink to go and just accepted it would be a nice walk around the city.

My hopes were in the dinner I was going to make. We went home, and he suggested helping me with dinner, but I refused because it would take more time to give him instructions than to make it myself. But for the whole evening, it felt like he was in a rush to eat the cake. The dinner was special, and I wanted to eat and talk like proper human beings, to have a romantic evening. But he always eats fast, and I can't keep up with his pace. By the time his plate was half-finished, he said he was full and couldn't continue, but he knew I would get mad that he eats like a savage, so he slowed down and waited for me.

We finished our plates, but I didn't even get 5 minutes before he wanted to eat cake. I cleaned the table, and for fun, I put party hats on us and the dogs to have a cute photo session to remember the evening. He said this isn't gonna work, and I managed to put a hat on only one of the dogs to take cute pictures. He snapped a few photos quickly, and they were all bad. I made him take pictures of us with the cake, but he is a horrible photographer. Out of the 20 pictures he took (we couldn't place the phone in a proper spot to capture both of us and the cake, and his hands are longer than mine, so...), I only liked 2 or 3. In one, I have only one eye open, in another I am blurry, and so on. We lit the candles, he made a video, and sang me the birthday song. This was okay. We ate cake, he complimented my cooking, and all. And that was it... I don't know... the whole day felt stupid.

From some moment through the day, I just forced myself to feel okay. Nothing felt special. During the day, I brought up Monday and the gallery visit a few times, but he insisted that Monday was theater day. He was the one who had paid for the tickets with his bank account, and the confirmation was in his email. I asked if he was sure and told him to check, but he was absolutely sure. Because I am the one who is more forgetful, I believed him.

Monday came, and the day was warm and sunny. He didn't want to waste the morning since I get up later, so he went to pursue his hobby. But from the moment I woke up, I just wasn't feeling the day. Something felt not quite right. He came home in a better mood than yesterday. I asked him if he was sure that today was theater day, and he again said yes. We took the dogs for a walk and came home, but still... I didn't feel it. I asked him to check his email to be sure, and I told him that I would be super disappointed if the whole plan just fell apart. After 30 minutes, he sat at the computer, and what do you know?! The theater is tomorrow, not today. Today we should have gone to the gallery.

For context, this gallery is composed of 5 buildings, all scattered on different streets. It would need nearly a whole day to visit all of them. I was so disappointed. The whole plan just fell apart. He tried to convince me we could do everything in one day (Tuesday), but we can't. I don't want to rush through everything just so I can cram it into one day—to visit all the buildings, go home, walk the dogs, freshen up, and go to the theater for the evening. It wouldn't feel natural, and it wouldn't feel like I am doing it for fun, but more like I am holding it together just so I can pretend everything is still going great. But it is not. And, of course, we started fighting about who was in the wrong.

So, am I overreacting for being upset?

I just wanted a series of pleasant activities where every day is different, and for everything to come and feel natural. Even though I didn't want to put all my expectations on him, and I wanted my mood to be dictated by no one but me (which is the reason why I don't want big gatherings for these occasions), he is half of my life. It should have been just him and me, and somehow, it was all still ruined.

AIO to my huband's relationship with his ex

• Upvotes

My (26f) husband (26m) has an ex who is currently living with his sister, we have had issues of boundaries being crossed with this ex early on in our relationship, not cheating just messages and her saying she wants to get back together with him. After this the communication was cut off, fast forward now, he has unblocked her and said its in case of an emergency with his sister that this ex might need to reach him. Then he was doing something at their house on the weekend and lied and said no one was home, made a whole story but the sister was out, the ex was home..

I should add I am also 25 weeks pregnant with his baby.

Heyyy so i dont know if this is right sub for this, but i just wanted to ask if this is concerning at all?shes turning 16 in december and hes turning 20 in february (i think). i didnt argue with it too much over text, but im worried shes getting herself into a possibly predatory relationship. idk im probably overreacting but a four year age gap at our age seems innapropriate.

this is my written version of our text convo:

Friend: GURL I GOT A HOT GUM BF
Friend: GYM*

Me: OMG WHAT OKAY

(friend sends a video of a guy working out at the gym)

Me: BRO LOOKS LIKE 20 WTH
Me: how did yall meet??

Friend: he’s 19 hehe
Friend: We've been playing codm for a while and we decided that we liked talking to each other and decided to share our discords and then he asked me to be his gf

Me: awww that's so cute!!
Me: wait hold on. isn’t that like a 4 year age gap?

Friend: I don't really mind all that much, my uncle and aunt are 12 years apart lol

Me: Oh.. okay 👍

Friend: It's Abt to turn into a 3 year age gap 😝 my birthday is coming up

so uh what do you mature people think of this?

AIO !GAMING! For not saying anything while they say nothing..

AIO I am playing a video game...

Soooo started talking with this friend through hinge (only looking for friends) we added eachother on fort today after talking for less than 5 days. I assume if we are playing a video game that means we will communicate.. they made it clear the day prior they do not like to call... so i say okay and oblige. We hop on the game they have me play a mode I've never played before.. I'm talking to them through headset they can't hear me because it's not charged so we play till it is. Now they message me on the phone to say they can hear me, i try to call them through discord while we are playing since their headset is charging.. they reiterate calling isn't something they like and would rather wait... again i say okay... we finish like 2 games with me talking into my headset while hearing nothing...

So i say this after reading what THEY said to ME mid game.... and it's just because im gaming im saying stuff like "theres a bitch over here" and "fook" and asking where people are if they can ping it... after no pings or callouts or any in game communication i say this since I had explained how i communicate regardless....

Genuinely AIO??

For context this person knows I am staying up very late to play with them when i need sleep..

AIO by thinking these are red flags?

I’ve been traumatized so much I genuinely can’t tell. I went on a second date with him, and he knows I’m in nursing school. He said “ thats good you only have 1.5 years of nursing school left. Youve been trying for the last 8 years right?”, I told him I had been in nursing school for 1 year taking prereqs(ADN program) and that I just started a two year ADN program. I felt insulted because why would he assume it had taken me 8 years!? Unless he had mixed it up with med school, but that’s very difficult to mix up.

Then I told him a childhood story of when I almost drowned at 5 years old and he started arguing with me that swimming comes instinctively to humans?? I told him it does not, and humans need to learn how to swim, but he just kept arguing with me. Finally he made a comment about how he’s shocked I’m eating so much because I’m a girl. I don’t think he was trying to fat shame me for anything, but it weirded me out.

My (M33) girlfriend (F28) lied that had muslim ex. I feel disgust now. AIO?

We've been dating for four months and are already discussing marriage. In fact, she's the one pushing more for it. We sre both Christians.

For context, I live in a country where relationships between Christian women and Muslim men are a very sensitive subject. Unfortunately, a lot of people here have strong prejudices about it. A Christian woman who has dated a Muslim man can be judged harshly, rejected by parts of her family or community, and even ridiculed by her friends.

I want to be clear that I have nothing against Muslims. I have Muslim coworkers and business partners, and I have no problem with them as people. I'm talking about the cultural reality and the way relationships like this are perceived in my society.

Here's my problem.

When we discussed her past, she told me she had never been involved with a Muslim man. I wouldn't necessarily have had a problem if she'd been honest with me from the beginning, but I recently saw some old messages on her phone from around six years ago that made me question whether she was telling the truth.

The conversation was very flirty and sexual from the beginning. They started talking, and within about a week, she went out with him. After just three days of chatting, he asked her for a picture, and she sent him a selfie. Based on what I saw, I'm 100% sure they kissed, but I think nothing else happened.

I also noticed that she had initiated conversations with two or three other Muslim men around that time.

What bothers me is a combination of things. First, I feel like she lied to me about her past. Second, I can't stop thinking about the possibility that she had something with this guy and that there were other muslim men as well. And third, I know how people in my country would react if they found out about it.

I know these messages are from six years ago, long before she met me, and I understand that people have a past. I'm not expecting her to have lived her life exactly as I would have wanted. But I can't seem to get these images out of my head, especially because she denied it when I asked her.

Also, she kept this dating with muslim guys hidden from her parents and friends as they were so against that but still, she went out and now they are not talking with her. One of the reason

I genuinely love her. We have a good relationship, and I can see a future with her. That's what makes this so difficult. We're already talking about marriage after only four months, and I don't want to make a decision that I'll regret later.

Part of me feels that if she had simply been honest, I could have processed it differently. Another part of me wonders whether I'm struggling so much because of my own upbringing and the judgment I know we'd face from people around us.

How do I move forward when I love someone but can't seem to get this out of my head? I feel a bit disgust when I see her sometimes, like the picture of her and muslim guy kissing. I know is wrong but yeah.. I wouldnt be so angry even if she had 15 christian guys before me vs 1 muslim kiss...

How to overcome this, experiance? I already booked psychologist so I am trying to fix this disgust feeling. It's not jelousy just disgust.

Tldr. My future wife lied that she dated muslim guys

AIO for considering ending my relationship? [UPDATE]

Quite a bit has happened since I last posted in here, but I won’t get into that. Long story short, I took space from him for a few days, then he went and texted me this. I responded explaining how I basically felt like my feelings weren’t really important, and that I was done with him.

After that, I blocked his number, and then blocked him on all social media platforms I had him added on.

To be honest, I don’t really feel sad. I feel… relieved, I guess?

AIO : made my date leave right after hooking up

I (27f) have been going on dates with this guy (27m) the past few weeks and really have had the best time with him, but after this I don’t know if I can see him the same way.

During sex, he started asking to take off the condom “just for a second.” I’m not on birth control, told him I was ovulating, and also just prefer safe sex. I’ve also previously told him that I had a big fear of getting pregnant, plus I just began seeing him and don’t know his sexual health. He’s told me a few days ago that he was talking to 2 other girls which is completely fine, we’re both single. However, the fact that he started begging to take it off makes me feel like he has unsafe sex with other women which is a risk I don’t want to take.

I told him it was a bad idea since I’m ovulating, tried being playful saying “we should be good”. I didn’t want to completely kill the mood, however after he asked the 4th or 5th time I gave a firm “No”, no playing around or trying to sound nice anymore. By then I was so turned off, seeing a fully grown man whining and pleading when I was very obviously uncomfortable.

Then he said he “couldn’t take it anymore” and took it off himself. I just went stiff and quiet, after a minute or so I got a new condom and unwrapped it and he insisted to “just wait a few more seconds”. He ended up not letting me put a new one on.

I felt totally disrespected and used in that moment. And now I’m absolutely terrified of pregnancy and potentially contracting an std. The fact that he could even get off while I was stiff as a board, said no, and was obviously uncomfortable honestly disgusts me. The nice guy facade completely broke for me and I just feel so stupid.

Shortly after he asked if I was okay, and I told him he should probably leave. I told him how I felt and that it wasn’t okay, that if we had sex again we needed to discuss very clear boundaries, etc. I mostly wanted him to leave so that he wasn’t stuck here while I was upset, and I could process the situation without overreacting. He was very apologetic and said he felt like an absolute asshole and beating himself up. I ended up apologizing for making it a big deal and told him he could stay but he was obviously upset and left. But I’m not sure if I was actually overreacting.

It felt like we really had connected on a deep level, like right as we met it felt so natural as if we’d known each other for years. He seemed so kind and respectful, and showed genuine effort from the jump. It’s honestly been a while since I’ve felt so comfortable with a person. Which is why I’m conflicted on how I handled the situation. Did I ruin everything over one little thing?

They called someone else their other half AIO

For context my partner is (22) and I am (24), we have been dating for almost 2 years and they are bisexual. My partner posted a picture with their friend while on vacation captioned something about their friend being their other half. I was raised very much to see that phrase as a deeply romantic phrase, meant only for your husband or wife. I went ahead and let them know that I wasn’t really comfortable with them saying something with such a romantic meaning, I didn’t ask them to take it down or anything. It very much was just me saying I was always taught that the phrase has a certain meaning and letting them know that it just rubbed me the wrong way. When I let them know how it made me feel they just told me that not the meaning they intend and that it just feels really controlling. Keep in mind, they are on a vacation states away, while I am home working. If I was controlling, I wouldn’t really have been okay with them going on this vacation without me. Afterwards they just kept saying they don’t view it that was, and I would continue to tell them I’m just not super comfortable with them referring to other people using such intimate phrasing, and that generally it is considered an intimate phrase. I see it more as me setting a relatively minuscule boundary and they just refuse to see it my way. All I’m asking is they don’t refer to their friends using such intimate phrasing. It didn’t really spiral into and argument or anything, but I can tell that they really don’t like me putting up that boundary. Am I overreacting?

AIO: My friend’s boyfriend wants to have a 3some with me.

I originally posted this in R/relationships and it got taken down and I was told to post it here instead, so here I am.

I (18F) am friends with Amanda (19F) and have been for about five years now. We met in freshman year of high school and quickly became best friends due to overlapping classes and similar interests.

For some background context, Amanda was dating a guy she met through a mutual friend, lets call him Rick (18M), throughout most of our friendship. He lived in another state at the time and they only met up a handful of times, but she was head over heels for him. Unfortunately, senior year I found some evidence he was cheating on her with another girl and reported it to Amanda. The evidence turned out to be true and caused a whole blow up in their relationship. They decided to stay together, but we caught Rick cheating on Amanda with the same girl two more times before he finally ended up breaking up with Amanda, which left her in a really bad mental state.

Recently, Amanda has started seeing Josh (30M), who she met through a dating app not too long after this whole ordeal, and has begun living with him after leaving a rather nasty living situation with her own family.
The issue arises because recently, when I went over to Amanda’s house, she shared some information with me.

Talking about her relationship and how things were going, Amanda shared with me that Josh had admitted to her that it was on his “Bucket List” to have a threesome with her and another girl. In the process of trying to convince Amanda, make it seem more appealing, or whatever other reason, I’m not entirely sure, he brought up MY* *name as an option for their third.

Amanda did make sure to clarify with me that she was not comfortable with having a threesome with me and Josh whatsoever, and furthermore was not comfortable with having a threesome at ALL for that matter. She let me know that she shut it down and Josh didn’t push further, but also had inadvertently mentioned this wasn’t his first time bringing it up either.

At the time I kinda just brushed it off since that was that, but the more I think about it, the more uncomfortable I am just thinking about it. Josh is almost a decade older than me and I have no attraction to him whatsoever. Furthermore, I’m in my own relationship (with someone my age) and I’m perfectly happy where I am. I have no desire whatsoever to have a threesome with either of them, but I also can’t get the idea that he thought about me in that way out of my head. It makes my skin prickle.

Am I overreacting? And is there any advice on how I can go about this?

My mother told me I'd deserve it if my future husband beat me and I don't know how to process this, AIO?

I recently had an argument with my mother that genuinely broke my heart.

It started when I was discussing a traditional religious ritual associated with seeking forgiveness for supposed transgressions related to menstruation. I told my mother I disliked it and remembered attending one when I was around 13-14, wondering why I had to participate in something that made me feel like I'd done something wrong.

My mother disagreed with my views, and the conversation escalated. She felt I was personally attacking her beliefs and calling her conservative. But what happened afterward was what really hurt me.

She started telling me that if I behaved this way with my future in-laws, they might beat me and kick me out. She has made similar comments before, essentially warning me that people won't tolerate my behaviour the way my family does. I told her I'm not planning on getting married, but then I asked her something: if I did get married and my husband beat me, would she support me?

She said no. She said I'd deserve it.

I asked her repeatedly whether she actually meant that or was just saying it out of anger. She repeatedly said that she meant it, that I would deserve it if I kept picking fights and failed to get along with people.

She explained that if a woman argues back when a man scolds her, the situation could escalate, and that this could be avoided if she simply got along with him. She even brought up my father, saying that if he scolded her and she started arguing back, she couldn't entirely blame him if he hit her. My father isn't like that at all btw, but she also mentioned some male relatives and their hypothetical future wives, suggesting that disagreements could lead to those men hitting their wives, too.

I tried explaining that disagreeing with someone doesn't justify violence. What if I were doing nothing wrong except expressing an opinion or refusing to be treated like a maid? Would I deserve to be beaten then, too?

Her response was essentially that I should learn to get along with people, be positive, and be strong enough to handle things myself. She kept saying that I could avoid these situations if I stopped picking fights. When I asked what she would do if I came back to her after being abused, she said she couldn't do anything and that I'd have to deal with it myself.

The domestic violence part of this argument was particularly frustrating. My mother insisted that domestic violence happens in villages rather than modern families. She asked how I would even know about it, since I spend so much time on my phone reading things like this, and implied that I was living in my head and creating problems that hadn't happened.

I tried explaining that domestic violence happens everywhere, including in Western countries like the US, which people here often regard as more modern and progressive. It's not exclusive to villages or traditional households. Traditional gender roles and patriarchal attitudes can contribute to abuse, but being from a modern, educated family doesn't automatically make someone incapable of it.

Someone can come from a traditional family and still be a genuinely good person who respects their partner and would never hit them. Someone else can come from a supposedly modern family and still be abusive. Being traditional doesn't automatically make someone abusive, just as being modern doesn't automatically make someone respectful. Ultimately, a person's background doesn't guarantee how they'll treat their partner.

My point was that you cannot guarantee your safety by simply being agreeable and avoiding disagreements. You could do everything right and still end up with someone abusive. And even if you do end up with a good person, that doesn't mean you should have to suppress every opinion or disagreement just to keep the peace. My mother, however, kept insisting that these situations could be avoided if I learned to get along with people instead of picking fights. She said she gets along with everyone and is happy because she doesn't behave the way I do.

I couldn't understand how she could acknowledge that men might hit their wives while simultaneously placing so much responsibility on the women to prevent it. Why is the solution always for women to be more agreeable, more accommodating, more positive, and more willing to tolerate things? Why isn't the responsibility placed on the person who chooses to use violence?

I wasn't saying that I planned to argue with everyone I met or that I wanted to create conflict in a future marriage. I was questioning why expressing an opinion or disagreeing with someone was being treated as a potential justification for violence.

What made everything worse was how she treated me when I became upset.

She repeatedly called me crazy, mentally ill, a psycho, and mentally messed up. She said my mind was in a dark place and suggested I was bringing this up because I was mentally unwell. She said I needed mental help and that there was something wrong with me for bringing this up and continuing to argue about it. She repeatedly brought up the fact that I was on my period, suggesting I was picking fights because I was menstruating. At one point, she even said I was dangerous and might physically hurt her or someone else someday. I don't think she genuinely believed I was going to harm anyone like that, but hearing my own mother say those things about me was still upsetting. Being called these things isn't new to me, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt obv.

When I started crying after hearing my own mother tell me all that, she asked why I was crying and why I was seeking sympathy. She told me I needed to be strong instead of sitting there crying.

It's absurd to me because she could say all these deeply hurtful things to me, question my sanity, and suggest that I deserved to be abused. But if I cried because of what she said, I was weak and seeking sympathy?

I don't understand why my feelings are treated as a problem when I'm hurt by something she says, while her own feelings are treated as completely legitimate when she feels hurt by something I say.

I understand that she felt personally attacked during the original discussion. I understand that she was angry. But I DONT understand why her being hurt justifies everything she said afterward, while my being hurt is apparently evidence that something is wrong with me.

The reason this has affected me so much is that I've always believed my mother would have my back.

She has been a present mother. She isn't someone who has been entirely absent or uncaring throughout my life. She's educated, grew up in a relatively progressive household, and had a working mother at a time when that was less common. I've always thought of her as a strong woman.

I know that none of those things automatically makes someone free of patriarchal beliefs. I'm not saying that she's been a bad mother or that everything she's ever done for me means nothing now.

But I genuinely thought that if something terrible happened to me, especially something like domestic violence, she'd support me, no questions asked. I thought that even if I made mistakes, even if I was difficult to get along with, even if I disagreed with people, she'd still care about my safety.

That belief has now been shaken.

I keep thinking that maybe she was just angry. Maybe she doubled down because admitting she was wrong would have felt like losing the argument. Maybe she was trying to warn me about the reality of the world in her own misguided way.

But I also keep coming back to the fact that I asked her multiple times whether she meant what she was saying, and she repeatedly said yes. She repeatedly told me that I would deserve it and that she wouldn't support me.

I don't want to invent a more comforting interpretation of her words just because accepting them hurts. Maybe she would act differently if something actually happened to me. I genuinely hope I'll never have to find out. But how am I supposed to know that she'll support me when she explicitly told me the opposite?

People often say that they're your parents and that you shouldn't take everything they say to heart. But how am I not supposed to take this to heart? How am I supposed to hear my own mother tell me that I deserve to be beaten and then simply move on because she's my mother?

I know this was a hypothetical situation. I know I haven't actually been abused by a husband or in-laws. But the question wasn't really about predicting my future. It was about whether my mother believes I deserve support if someone hurts me.

I don't expect her to solve every problem in my life. I wasn't asking her to handle a divorce, a legal case, or every practical consequence of a hypothetical abusive marriage. I was asking whether she would support me if someone hurt me, and she said no.

I regret bringing up the topic sometimes, because before this argument, I was confident that if nobody else had my back, my mother would, my parents would. I could have continued believing that without ever having to confront the possibility that she might not.

I don't know what to think anymore. I can acknowledge that my mother has been a good parent in many ways while also being deeply disturbed by what she said. I can understand that she might have been angry without pretending that her words didn't mean anything.

TLDR, I argued with my mother about a traditional religious practice, and the conversation escalated to her telling me I'd deserve to be beaten by a future husband and that she wouldn't support me if it happened. I asked her repeatedly if she meant it, and she said yes. She's generally been a good, present mother, so hearing this from her has really shaken my trust in her. I'm struggling to process it and wondering if I'm overreacting.

Am I overreacting to this? I feel like I'm actually going crazy, maybe mom was correct.

AIO by telling my friend that I don’t want to share anti-American sentiments at Thanksgiving dinner?

This is a bit of a complex one but here goes. So, one of my best friends is from South America and I’m from the US, but we both live in the UK. Every year I do Thanksgiving dinner in some form or the other but this is the first one that I’d be doing with her. It will be a fair few of us but predominantly our friends from the UK who are happy to be a part of it. Me, her and another friend were talking about dinner games to play and one that she suggested was everyone going around the table to share one thing we’re grateful for, and one thing we hate about America. I guess she picked up on discomfort then went on to say the anti-militaristic, anti-Republican aspects of America, etc., and I sort of laughed it off. But it didn’t sit that right with me and I decided to bring it up today.

For context, I’m African American with Native heritage. So I have a fairly complicated relationship with the historical origins of Thanksgiving and have always been brought up treating it as a celebration of how far my ancestors have come to sustain life in the United States while expressing gratitude for what we have now. Another layer is that in the UK I’ve often found myself in conversations where the politics of the US have been sprung on me once I share that I’m American and a sort of expectation to answer for or explain my stance on our systemic issues. Or some sort of general disdain for Americans is expressed, whether it be that were loud, annoying, incompetent or whatever. This doesn’t happen often, but there is a sense of shame or embarrassment that comes with it and I tend to find myself insisting that it really isn’t all of us, especially as a Black American, we have suffered under these systems too.

I explained this to my friend and my general discomfort with the idea, as well as how fatiguing it can be. She told me that she has negative associations with America because of how her country has been affected and she’s only done Thanksgiving twice and is thinking about how she’d want to celebrate it as she doesn’t exactly know how to and wants to be able to acknowledge America’s wrongdoings I suppose to emphasise that we aren’t celebrating it specifically. I get it, but everyone knows America is fundamentally flawed. As the only person from the US who will be preparing and hosting the dinner, I don’t exactly want to sit in a shadow of shame about things out of my control that are associated with where I come from versus enjoying food and gratitude with my friends. Am I overreacting?

EDIT: For anyone asking why I celebrate Thanksgiving out here, it’s usually a little at-home affair that I like to do with friends since I can’t usually get time off to go home and spend it with my family, I never impose it on anyone else or expect people’s attendance/involvement. My friend wanted to be a part of it and she started suggesting the dinner games. I should note that we don’t ignore the colonial history at all, back home we always share stories about our ancestors to honour them and my family has always been extremely honest about the origins of the holiday. I think that America is committing atrocities left right and centre and I don’t deny that whatsoever, and I also have no issue discussing that in any other contexts on the actual evening. But I just didn’t really feel right about it being a focal point of the dinner. I want to do right by everyone and be respectful of her experience too.

AIO for feeling like I can’t compete with my boyfriend’s past?

My boyfriend and I have been together for around 10 months, and sometimes I get in my head about his ex.
They were together for 7 years and were high school sweethearts. Apparently, they haven’t spoken in almost 2 years, but she still talks to his mom and interacts with his family all the time.
I know their relationship is over, and I’m not saying he wants her back. I just struggle with the fact that someone can be such a huge part of your life for seven years and then you’re supposed to come along and not think about it.
And to make my brain even more annoying, she’s gorgeous, skinny, and rich. She also had a major glow-up after they broke up, which makes me wonder if he regrets ending things or thinks he made a mistake. Meanwhile, I’m kind of funny-looking, so naturally my brain has decided I’m the comic relief in this situation. Lmao.
I know comparing myself to her is unfair to both of us, and I know having history with someone doesn’t automatically mean you still have feelings for them. But sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever feel as significant as someone who was there for so much of his life. Seeing how much she has changed since their breakup makes me worry that he looks at her now and wonders what could have been.
I don’t want to be the girlfriend who makes everything about an ex who isn’t even around anymore. I just want to stop feeling like I’m standing in the shadow of a whole seven-year relationship and imagining that he secretly regrets choosing me.
Has anyone else struggled with this? How did you get out of the comparison spiral and start feeling secure in your own relationship?

AIO or this controlling ? Cousin won’t let his girlfriend spend time with me at a Halloween event . He said I need single friends to go with

It’s a Halloween event circus Carnival type thing going on
I invited my cousin girlfriend . We have developed a great friendship throughout the past couple of years . I honestly love her ! She’s super sweet and always gives me a big hug when I see her . She said she wanted to come and she was upset because my cousin told her no that’s it’s for single people . I was like “ it’s not like I’m taking her to a club . It’s just a fun Halloween activity . I don’t understand why you are telling her no.” And she’s 25. He is 25. They live together. They aren’t married yet but she is crazy about him and he seems crazy in love with her . When I asked my cousin he was like “ absolutely not appropriate for a woman in a relationship.”
I have single friends but I wanted to share the experience with her in particular

I’m Hiding Snacks From My Husband Like a Squirrel, AIO?

I’m a 32F am married to my 45M We’ve been together for four years and living together for almost three. I love him deeply, and I don’t think he’s intentionally malicious—he’s genuinely a sweetheart. However, I’m increasingly overwhelmed by our living situation, especially because his 10-year-old daughter will be moving in full-time in a few weeks.

My husband has struggled with his weight and eating habits for years. He has high blood pressure, is obese, has had type 2 diabetes, and is now prediabetic again. His doctors have told him to address his health, but he doesn’t exercise, doesn’t want to, and refuses to see a nutritionist. He also tried GLP-1 medications for over a year without making any diet or lifestyle changes.

Our eating habits are very different. I eat smaller portions, more slowly, and generally choose healthier or higher-quality foods. Since we stopped relying mostly on meal delivery services, this difference is much more noticeable.

I buy many of my preferred foods with my own money, but my husband regularly eats both those items and food bought with our joint grocery budget. The issue isn’t that he leaves me with nothing; it’s that he eats much faster than I do and doesn’t replace what he consumes. Some foods I buy for myself can be gone within days, whereas typically they would last me a month.

I’ve started hiding certain snacks and desserts because I know they’ll disappear if I leave them in the pantry or refrigerator. I hate feeling like I need to hide food from my own husband.

My stepdaughter has primarily lived with her mother and currently spends weekends and school breaks with us. Once she moves in full-time, our household dynamic will change significantly.

Both she and my husband have unhealthy eating habits. They eat a lot of fast food, candy, desserts, and processed foods. My husband drinks energy drinks almost every morning, and his daughter can eat an entire box of ice cream bars over a weekend. Both have been told by doctors that they are overweight and prediabetic.

I understand that I can’t force either of them to change (I dont want to), nor would I monitor or control what they eat. However, their choices affect me because we share a home, kitchen, grocery budget, and responsibilities.

I’m worried I’ll become responsible for constantly buying unhealthy foods I don’t eat, managing portions, making separate meals, hiding my food, or running two separate food systems in one household when i already have so much on my plate.

The food issue is part of a larger problem: I feel like I’m becoming the caretaker of the household—and sometimes of my husband. This wasnt discussed prior to marriage and where he told me he didnt want more kids (he has 1, i have none) i didnt anticipate taking on a caretaker role outside of what is expected of me being a stepmother. I am very supportive of my step daughter, attend all her extra curricular sports, help with tutoring and share the costs of any holiday gifts, vacations etc as apart of the normal household budget.

My husband was a single father for 6 years before we met and was capable of managing his life and being a single parent. Since we’ve been together, though, he seems to have become less independent with many responsibilities. I often handle administrative tasks, grocery lists, planning, and anticipating what everyone needs.

I currently work two jobs (one full-time and one part-time) and my primary job is around 45 hours a week. My husband is home much more than I am, yet I often come home to a mess, the dog needing attention, and questions like, “What should we do about dinner?”. That question is exhausting. I spend most of my mental energy working, planning, and organizing. I don’t want to come home and make another decision about dinner or household logistics. This is a daily occurence not just occassion. If it were up to me, I’d make a pot of soup and eat it throughout the week.

Grocery shopping together is also frustrating. My husband doesn’t really help, and I often feel like he gets in the way. I usually make the list, pay with our joint card, and organize the groceries so they’re easier to put away. The store often bags meat, dairy, and household liquids together, which bothers me, so I prefer to bag things myself which he has the nerve to scold me about or tells me not to do. So, id rather grocery shop by myself because he contributes nothing but causes additional stress for me. He also doesnt help with the list a d i have to guess or remeber what he and his daughter likes to eat. At this point, shopping together feels more like having another child with me than having a partner.

I don’t criticize my husband’s food choices or appearance. I love him and find him attractive. What’s difficult is hearing him repeatedly say, “I don’t know why I’m not losing weight,” when we’ve had the same conversation many times.

He knows his eating habits and lack of exercise contribute to his health problems. He’s tried GLP1s and has been told he’s overweight and prediabetic, but he still expresses confusion about his weight. I try to be supportive, but constantly reassuring someone about a problem they aren’t taking any steps to change is emotionally exhausting.

I’m very Type A. I plan ahead, anticipate problems, and like having contingencies. My husband prefers to “go with the flow” and doesn’t want to plan too far ahead. Neither approach is inherently wrong, but I’m worried our differences are becoming incompatible when it comes to managing a household. I can’t simply go with the flow when I’m already exhausted and responsible for anticipating everything.

I knew I was marrying someone with a child, and I’m willing to take on the responsibilities of being a stepmother. What I’m struggling with is feeling like I’m not only becoming a stepmother—I’m also parenting my husband.

I don’t want to remind an adult man to handle basic responsibilities or manage his food. But i cant continue to take accountability for his daughter’s food, the grocery list, the house, the dog, dinner, and administrative tasks simply because I’m more organized. I’m afraid that once his daughter moves in, my responsibilities will increase dramatically and i already have resentment towards my husband of how things have been going.

This isn’t primarily about money. I contribute significantly to our household income and work more than my husband, but I don’t resent what he earns or spends.

My frustration is the mental and emotional burden. I don’t want to spend more of my money, time, and energy buying food that others consume without replacing. I also don’t want to hide things I purchased in a home I help support financially.

I recently switched antidepressants and have been more emotionally sensitive and on edge. I recognize that this may be affecting how intensely I’m reacting, and it makes me question whether I’m overanalyzing things.

But I’m also genuinely overwhelmed and resentful. It’s beginning to affect our intimacy and how I feel about the relationship. I still love my husband and don’t want to leave or destroy our marriage. However, I’ve started imagining what it would be like to live alone. I wouldn’t have to worry about someone else’s meals, the house, the dog, groceries, or whether my food would still be there when I get home.

I know living alone would mean losing my marriage, which isn’t what I want. I love my husband and would miss sleeping beside him, but I also deeply value my alone time, personal space, and control over my environment. Right now, I want the independence of living alone without losing my husband.

I’m afraid that when my stepdaughter moves in, I’ll become responsible for more cooking, shopping, cleaning, scheduling, childcare-related tasks, planning, and emotional labor. I’m afraid the food situation will worsen, that I’ll become the default parent and household manager, and that my husband will continue going with the flow while I solve every problem. I dont know can I approach this before our household dynamic changes permanently.

Am I overreacting? How can I fix this?

AIO for deciding to go ditch my best friends birthday party and not answering their texts?

I am really not good with words, so I will just write down whatever and hope you guys understand me. Saturday was my childhood best friend’s birthday party. He turned 30, so it was quite a big birthday.

The party was going well. He introduced me to some of his new work friends. We were having fun, and then he started getting drunk. I don’t know how to put it, but he was all... “alpha male.” Like poking fun at a guy who had recently gotten married for being whipped, making comments about women, etc. Then we went out to the garden where the beers were, and they just started doing stupid shit. Like one guy chipped his tooth trying to open a beer bottle with it. And worse things. I did not wanna do any of this, and then I started getting booed and called all sorts of variations of coward, etc. They started pushing me around in a circle, all laughing. I managed to wiggle free and made an excuse about going to the toilet.

His gf saw I was quite stressed and invited me to sit with them (a few of the other gfs and two of her own friends). I was just planning to sit there, eat some bread, sober up, wait for the cake cutting and then bounce. But along the way I actually got involved in the conversation and had a better time than I’d had all night, if that makes sense. I tried some of the pink spritz or whatever. I did not like it, but I ate the berries.

Then my friend came back in and the atmosphere felt horrible. I stood up to get a soda, and he followed me into the kitchen with another of his friends, and they wanted to force me to drink some disgusting-looking scotch thing. Like literally holding me by the neck and putting the glass to my lips. I drank a sip and just spat it into the sink. That was the last straw for me, and while they were dicking around somewhere else, I told his gf thanks but I was bouncing, and I just left to take the train.

I came to the conclusion that this is not for me. I had a thousand times better time with the women and actually felt at peace, more than with my so-called friends. I don’t know what changed, or if maybe I changed, but this was one of the top ten most uncomfortable evenings of my life, and I do not want to be friends with people like that. I don’t even remember the last time I talked to him or he asked me about my life. Same with all the other friends there. Like, I know their favorite players and the crazy stories and stuff, but I did not even know one of them was engaged?

Anyway, I started getting texts from all of them saying it was messed up that I just Irish goodbyed them and that it was traitor behaviour, and my friend is majorly pissed. I answered him about the points I brought up here, and he said I was majorly overreacting, said I could have just said I did not want to (which I did!), that it was my fault for not pulling through, and that that is just who he is. So I did not respond to them anymore.

AIO for leaving and wanting to end the friendship?

My 23F girlfriend 26F told me she thinks I love her more than she loved me.

We went to a board game cafe where you pay for 4hrs and you can play any game they have. One of the games was a dating game and one of the questions was "who loves the other more" and she stated that I of course loved her more than she loved me and she laughed.

I have always felt as though there was an emotional imbalance in our relationship. For example I am more physically affectionate, I am more vocal about how much I love her, I give her more gifts im more emotionally available and vulnerable . Yet she never opens up to me, she does get me things and plan dates but she doesnt touch me or vocalise how much she cares which I have shared is very important to me. She also for the first 8 months of our relationship did not like to call me and would sometimes ignore my texts for hours. And when I told her how much it made me feel unwanted and rejected when she ignored me, she said she understood but nothing would change. In the last month, I can tell she is trying but I feel like it is too little too late. I'm exhausted. And when she made that comment about me loving her more, it all clicked to me that maybe, its not that she struggled to show love, its that the love was not there. Not necessarily that she doesnt love me, im sure she does, but she cannot love me to the extend that I need her to. And ofc I love her but, I fear that the longer I wait for her to get there, the more of myself I will lose.

TLDR: my girlfriend doesnt love me as much as I love her and I dont think she can ever love me as much as I need her to.

AIO for being upset that my boyfriend did not give me his jacket.

Hey all,

I am not sure if I am overreacting to this or not. We were going to a wedding and he was coming later that day. I realized how cold it was going to be and didn’t realize it until I got there. So I texted him to ask if he could grab me a sweatshirt and he said yes. He came to the wedding and he left my sweatshirt at the hotel.

He saw that I had goosebumps and was like “you look so cold”. I ended up stealing an extra jacket from a different guest. Afterwards I told him how much better I felt with it and he’s like “oh I could have given you my jacket because I always run hotter than you any way” and he also said he could have looked through his car for another jacket or sweatshirt. He said this after I found the jacket when I was only in a dress for an hour and a half. I just don’t understand him, I don’t know how to communicate this without sounding spoiled. Maybe I am spoiled for expecting him to give me his jacket. AIO?

AIO for installing security cameras after my neighbor kept using my driveway?

The problem started with the family next door.

At first, they'd pull into the edge of my driveway for a minute while unloading groceries. It didn't bother me much, so I ignored it. Then it turned into parking there for 10 or 15 minutes while they switched cars.I politely asked if they could stop because I sometimes needed to leave unexpectedly for work. They apologized and said it wouldn't happen again. It kept happening. One afternoon I was already running late when I found their SUV completely blocking half my driveway. I knocked on their door, but nobody answered. I ended up waiting almost 30 minutes before they finally moved it.After that, I installed two security cameras facing my driveway and front yard.A few days later, my neighbor confronted me, saying I was "spying" on their family and making the neighborhood uncomfortable. I explained that the cameras only covered my property and were there because of the parking issue. Now they've started telling other neighbors that I'm the "crazy camera lady."The strange part is that another neighbor quietly thanked me because they said the same family had been cutting across their yard too.I haven't shared any footage online or reported them anywhere. The cameras are just recording my own property.

Some people think I escalated things by installing cameras instead of trying to talk to them againSo, AIO?
