Season 10 Discussion Completely Overthinking Two Brief Scenes Because Speculating Is Fun (10x01 Spoilers) Spoiler

TL;DR Version:

I think (hope) that Buck struggling to parent Theo effectively is merely the entry point into the story, the real main course is figuring out why Buck and Eddie aren't communicating.

Overanalyzing Everything Version:

Obviously we are all working off an incredibly limited amount of information, so this will unavoidably be significantly closer to wild speculation still, than informed hypothesis. All any of us can do is try to be as clear-eyed and as upfront as possible about the assumptions we're making, starting of course with just the assumption of some level of optimism that the show has been working on it's weaknesses, particularly around time and organization.

Beyond that though the biggest assumption I'm working from right now is just that one-sided conflict never ends up being that interesting. The best moments of tension between Buck and Eddie are when they both have understandable, even sympathetic POVs, but either those POVs are in contention, or they simply lack the ability to reconcile them for some reason. Like the gold standard for me is still 8x09. They're both hurting, and as a result they are both hurting each other, and it's just this glorious emotional mess.

And we can compare that to a much weaker arc like the lawsuit, where because the various decisions give Buck such a comparatively poor footing, it becomes a one sided lesson rather than an interesting fight.

It also seems fair to suggest that there has been at least some pattern, albeit an imperfect one, of them getting that balance right more often recently even beyond that high mark (8x17, or even 9x05 etc.)

If we apply that assumption of both of them being equal participants here then I think a lot of the initial reaction to 10x01 is maybe only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Cause yes, clearly Buck is struggling to parent Theo for as of yet unspecified reasons, but the resolution of that can't just be that Eddie teaches him how to do it, because that doesn't give Eddie any story or growth. It's also just not inline generally with Eddie's story. Eddie is a great dad, but he's never been a magically perfect dad with all the answers. What makes Eddie great, as he tells Buck after the tsunami, is that he never stops trying. It's also just poor optics for Eddie to magically have the answer given the set up of Theo having behavioral issues in 9x17 before the tragedy and upheaval.

The second assumption I'm making here is then that because 10x01 was already so packed, to the extent that the editing at times bordered on slightly abrupt, it doesn't make sense to have both the hospital and the dinner scene if they were communicating that exact same thing. At the very least the second scene would have to represent an escalation, if not a significantly shifted focus, in order to justify keeping them both.

My immediate reaction was to assume simple escalation of the base problem, since obviously Theo potentially hurting Chris was always going to land as a huge deal. The more I've been sitting with the episode though, the more I've been coming around to the idea that the scenes are emphasizing different questions.

Because the hospital scene is the completely one-sided one, where Buck doesn't have any leg to stand on. Theo's behavior is clearly extremely concerning if he's repeatedly causing serious injuries. Buck is portrayed as wildly irresponsible in hiding things and lying to the doctor, and doing it poorly at that, particularly for someone who just got caught lying by a doctor during his substance abuse arc. And the line about never saying no to ice cream is lab perfect to indicate overly indulgent behavior. This scene is already doing all the work that Buck struggling is a serious concern, it doesn't need Chris getting tripped to say the same thing.

The dinner scene though focuses much less on Buck's behavior. What little we can infer about him in that scene is largely just repeating his lack of action from the hospital scene. Beyond that he is perhaps embarrassed, particularly when he offers to clean up.

But largely the scene seems otherwise focused on Eddie and Theo. The shakey camera work, quick cuts, and audio editing is all emphasizing that Theo is out of control. And the reaction shots to Eddie all emphasize his obvious concern. So why isn't he saying anything? Like they're in his house, it would be entirely reasonable for him to say hey Buck, can we maybe try to calm Theo a little, but he never does. He was starting to say something at the end of the hospital scene, before Theo interrupts, (which could perhaps work as a sublte nod to the will scene being the closest they ever gotten to really talking about everything), but here he doesn't dispite the added focus on the fact that he, on at least some level, wants to.

That I think (hope) is going to be the ultimate story here. Theo's behavior, and Buck's lack of action is only the inciting event, the real main course is the lack of communication. Why isn't Buck asking for help? Why isn't Eddie offering?

Trying to answer those questions unfortunately gives us even less to work with right now, but if we want the wild speculation train to keep rolling I've got crumbs to try to connect.

For Buck I think the most recent guide post is still largely his conversation with Harry in 9x18, about being the only ones without a family. The dinner scene is maybe the most uncomfortable we've ever seen Buck in the Diaz house. Taking in Theo was at least on some level about his continued insecurities there, and is now exasperating those insecurities. The question of whether he can be a dad is inextricably linked to the doubts in his mind of if he's already been one for Chris.

From Eddie's POV the thread I'm grabbing is largely Chris in the dinner scene. Chris is the middle ground between them both literally in the seating, but also in the screen time conversation. Buck says Chris' screen time isn't bad, Eddie says it isnt great. Eddie's response to the screen time is that he knows how to "exercise restraint" which is always a double edged sword with him, caught between the positive associations of the "chain of command", and the extreme denial of not letting himself have juice. Chris is able to articulate direct concern for Theo not eating, further emphasizing that Eddie isn't. Is this Chris recognizing and again trying to navigate that his dads are having another one of their fights? My mind goes back to his line in 9x12 about it "always being hardest on the kids".

And we ultimately get to Theo tripping Chris. Which again is of course going to be reacted to as a serious concern by both the audience and Eddie. But increasingly I've convinced myself that the most important part of it is comparing Chris and Theo with Buck and Eddie. Because they make the decision to have Theo immediately apologize unprompted, and for Chris to both take a moment to assess himself and then accept the apology. I don't think that the point of that is just about softening the incident, because why script it this way at all if you're just worried it's too harsh. And it's not that Chris doesn't understand how serious what happend was. At this point he is old enough that he would probably understand that better than any of them. But he and Theo communicate directly with each other. Buck and Eddie don't, they talk past each other. "Maybe we should go" and "Maybe you should".

Making the climax of the scene Chris is emphasizing him as both the son Buck doesn't feel allowed to claim, and as the excuse Eddie uses to not face his feelings. He had to date women for Chris, because he needed a mother. He couldn't even consider that he wanted to stay in LA because it was about "choosing between you or my son", even though neither of them would make him choose that. And now we can see the teenager and the toddler are better at expressing themselves than either of these lovable dolts wondering which one of them currently has the braincell.

What that gets us then is that the story isn't just that Eddie needs to give Buck dad lessons, it's that they need to figure out the communication breakdown, or really probably the various entangled causes of that break down. And the answer isn't about any one method of parenting (or another "dad up" cop out), but rather about being there for each other, working together, and letting big brother Chris help too. The answer, in line with the shows repeated feel good beat, is the family unit supporting each other.

And I think there are a variety of interesting options for what is going on in both their heads. Obviously they've both got their own parental baggage as a base layer here, but those being the dominate explanations wouldn't really get them resolution.

For Eddie, is this him on some level suddenly struggling with the role reversal? Up until now the story has been always been that he was in the more easily recognizable and unquestioned secure position as the biological parent, and he was inviting Buck into the family, and reassuring him. Is this now Eddie being insecure about what role he has in Buck and Theo's life, or even on some subconscious level being uncomfortable with the recognition of what being the chosen parent might mean. Is he waiting for Buck to invite him in because he sees that as Buck's right and doesn't want to overstep?

Or is it more interesting to go the other direction with Eddie, and have him feeling upset that Buck didn't talk to him before choosing to take in Theo? Like Eddie on some level was starting to understand that he and Buck were a unit, even if he wasn't naming it entirely yet, and now he's thrown off because he thought that Buck was on the same page. Is the miscommunication whether they include each other in big decisions?

On Buck's side I think there's a question of what tone they are aiming for, and particularly how climactic this plot line is going to be to their overall arc.

Because on one hand there's a more light-hearted miscommunication possible here, in which Buck is waiting for Eddie to jump right in that way Buck did in 2x04, and is misunderstanding Eddie not doing that as disinterest or even annoyance. It's Buck recurring worry that he's too much. And this maybe gives you more of a upbeat midplot payoff, while maintaining the larger questions for later in the season. It's just reaffirming that they are "partners" without breaking the subtext yet.

Or is this going to unpack the darker elements of Buck's psyche, and call back to that dangling thread from 10x13 that Buck was willing to sacrifice himself? Could Theo be him on some level trying to find someone he feels entitled to always try to come back for, in the way Eddie talks about Chris? That maybe takes us more fundamentally into the core issue where Eddie thinks he's already been clear that Buck isn't expendable and that he mattters too, but Buck can't reconcile that with Eddie's 9x12 "I didn't know I was coming back."

If you made it through all that, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Season 3 Discussion Can someone help me mythbust a thing, my mom and I are on a rewatch-from-beginning and let's just say she thinks the least realistic myth-arc has nothing to do with a natural disaster

So yeah we're kinda "watching two 911 timelines at once" by watching current season yet still on rewatch of past episodes and the rewatch is currently at the lawsuit episodes. And why my mom thinks the lawsuit arc is even less realistic than the current disasters is how the hell could Buck sue for wrongful termination when he quit instead of being fired and I don't think that applies to him just being mad about not being let back on the job

Non-plot Discussion too far? Spoiler

do you guys ever think the hate for the new seasons and their emergencies is like a little too much, i know they obviously killed bobby off for so called realism but that was clearly just some form of excuse 😭 i just feel like you can't take that seriously and then ignore all the other insane stuff that happened in s1-start of 8 and also lonestar and now nashville it was clearly never a realistic show nor were their spinoffs ?

EDIT thank you guys for being nice and having a nice discussion with me in the comments!! it makes a change to other conversations ive had with people abt the show so i appreciate it! :)

Non-plot Discussion firehouse staffing question

i’m rewatching season 1 of nashville and i’m reminded of a question i’ve had for a while—why is there a lieutenant and a paramedic captain in lone star and nashville but not in the main show, which takes place in the biggest city?

ā€¼ļøseason 9 spoilers aheadā€¼ļø

i guess you could see hen (previously chimney) as a paramedic captain, but who would the lieutenant be? buck seems like the only non-paramedic firefighter in the 118 that’s been there long enough to qualify.

In episode 9x13 when buck gets kidnapped by bonnie when we see the scene of Bonnie seeing Buck for the first time she talks to her husband behind the counter and says "It really could be him this time" about buck being Derrick. THIS TIME. which probably means she's kidnapped/killed multiple other people before buck

Since you all love to post crazy real world emergencies that we usually end up removing because they're not actually about the show, we're giving you all a flair to put them under, but there are conditions to what will be allowed.

As mentioned in the title the flair is called 'When Reality and Fiction Collide', and it is only to be used for posting real world events that match something that has happened in the show - which helps keep these posts related to the series. Please try to remember to include the episode you saw the fictional version in.

Posts about an emergency that has not had an equivalent emergency in the show, or just ones you think would be a good emergency for the show - will be removed.
