Anyone starting to think Athena is the one causing all this crazy things to happen in LA? It’s almost like she’s a character in a final destination movie but she always finds a way to save others and herself from danger

It’s almost like she’s cursed lol, it seems like for a lot of the disasters, Athena somehow is always at the epicenter of every situation

This show has jumped the shark. Who is writing this crap? I feel bad for the actors on this show having to act out these ridiculous story lines. I’ve watched this show from the beginning. I’m out.

•

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 2h ago

People need to learn what jumping the shark actually means. It does not apply to 9-1-1. Also, there is no need to feel bad for the actors because they enjoy working on the show.

Bye!

•

u/ezb_zeb 10h ago

Anyone else get the ick from the rest of the detectives Athena is with? They just seem so different from the detectives we've encountered over the years. IDK why, but I don't like any of them and I can't tell if it's foreshadowing or bad writing.

•

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 9h ago

I think you’re just supposed to like Athena (more) and see her as the competent one.

•

u/playplor 14h ago

is this episode supposed to be narrated? every time i go to watch it it's being narrated

•

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 9h ago

It’s audio description.

•

u/rainyjadeee 12h ago

yeah the only pirated versions i find have this narrator

•

u/Crochet_ToTheSun 11h ago

Yeah, with me too. Does anyone know why? But I do not really mind because where I am, I am not ready to wait a month just to watch it, so yeah, I would rather watch with the narrated version than wait for months.

"It's a volcano!"

I absolutely love how completely over the top this show is. Realism is great, but sometimes you need pure over the top insanity that you can just turn your brain off for. I'm just glad my homegirl Athena isn't in the middle of this one. She's survived a sinking cruise ship, a plane crash, a disastrous trip to space, and getting shot in the chest.

She deserves a break from being wrapped up in the middle of the Big Season Opening Emergency Disaster

•

u/fanstuff26 Team Eddie 1h ago

That over the topness is why I'm still mad they killed Bobby for "realism". Sir, you had a bee tornado. Let Bobby live! But I will continue watching my popcorn show.

•

u/Consistent-Ease6070 13h ago

Um, she’s underground in the tunnel with the volcano. She’s in the middle of it…

•

u/Soxwin91 13h ago

Either that was in the teaser for next week (I watch on Hulu the next day so don't see those) or I missed it.

Guess she can't catch a break....poor Athena.

•

u/hexidecimals 9h ago

You missed it somehow, there were a few scenes of her crawling into the underground tunnel in the jewelry shop and then the jewelry shop owner got thrown back by hot steam (or something)

•

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 9h ago

Acidic steam, it looked like. 😭

•

u/Superadam54 18h ago

The aquarium rescue was very intense for me. I honestly thought that the aquarium diver had boiled alive not burned by acid until they said the PH level was becoming acidic.

Buck needs to step up big time. I understand that Theo lost his parents, however I hope Theo knocking Christopher down (even if it was a accident and it was!) Is the wake up call Buck needs that he can't be the fun parent all the time.

Chief Ty worrell was very cold in my opinion at first, especially towards Maddie. If he wanted the calls into dispatch investigated in such a fast manner, he should have asked her to form a group to do it so everything wouldn't fall on her. It really irked me when he told her to put the bottle down when she called him (I understand it was probably very late at night, but he did say he wanted awnsers.) to report her hunch from her work. I will give him kudos for calling her back the next morning and actually listening to her his time. I hope he survives because he does have potential as a character.

Athena and May?! Loved the role switch for May to tell Athena to make her own chance to prove herself. Athena not "Taking the win" so so like her. As soon as her partner told her to do that, I understood he didn't know her very well. As for May? Looking forward to seeing her more as a Nurse and aiding her Mom when a victim or perpetrator is being treated at the hospital and the 118 during a emergency. I hope we get to see Hen mentor May when she has a medical question because of her med school attempt.

•

u/Odd_Amphibian1825 Team Bobby 1h ago

I agree with everything lol but most importantly: that’s why Ty Worrell was whacked by a completely realistic chunk of molten lava rock in the middle of Los Angeles, California 😂

•

u/Ok_History_7440 20h ago

We need to see Buck do something about Theo soon. This won't be fun to watch if they keep it going for weeks.

•

u/ezb_zeb 15h ago

I hope there's a better explanation than Buck's a softie. He's been involved in Chris' life enough to know you can't only be good cop all the way back in season 4 (Parenthood). And even though Theo's parents were struggling with him, they weren't injured like this.

•

u/Ok_History_7440 20h ago

Angela Bassett and Jennifer Love Hewitt both look like they're on a GLP-1.

•

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 15h ago

No. Disgusting and uncalled for.

•

u/Ok_History_7440 10h ago

I think they both look good, so I don't know what's disgusting about what I said.

•

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 8h ago

It’s usually not complimentary when people say someone looks like they’ve been on the jabs. Hence “ozempic face”. Angela and Jen look good, regardless of their weight and any procedures they may have had done but your post wasn’t relevant to the topic.

•

u/Ok_History_7440 8h ago

Thanks for the judgment and for lecturing me about what's relevant to the topic.

•

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 7h ago

This thread is about the EPISODE.

•

u/Ok_History_7440 20h ago

I saw Zach Tinker listed in the opening credits and then he appeared for 5 seconds and 1 line.

I guess he's coming back next week?

•

u/Aquarius20111 Academy Award Winner 20h ago edited 20h ago

Good season opener. Nice set up for the characters though it was mostly emergencies and work-related. Is Buck doing any actual parenting at all lol?

•

u/IndiaEvans 21h ago

No way of May already a nurse. 🙄

•

u/Harri_Sombre_Tomato 7h ago

I'm pretty sure she's meant to he a student nurse. I dunno how it works in the US but in the UK you do spend a lot of time on placement actually treating patients.

•

u/Guilty-Chemist-1109 14h ago

Idk if it’s a real thing, but she’s in an accelerated program, meaning she’s learning as she goes, not prior knowledge. But I think it’s implied that she went to some sort of schooling

9-1-1 Prediction: Volcano Trilogy > Four-part Space Arc

Wait do we think Carla has a chance of coming back to help take care of Theo... or do I just love her too much.

3

The actress is doing stand up comedy in Georgia, she's not coming back.

Odds are on Now Divorced Daddy Buckley.

It's funny that I'm so annoyed they are doing this and how dumb it is after I sat through the space episodes which was also dumb 🤣

3

u/oath2order Dispatch (#BobbyAliveTruther) 1d ago

I loved the intro sequence, I love when we have dialogue intermixing like that. It's genuinely one of my favorite things shows do.

3

u/Guychatter4305555 1d ago

Music is extra loud thus episode. Same happens on Chicago Fire too.

10

u/ILikeFPS 1d ago

This episode was also so goofy but it's also the best episode I've seen in a long time. I loved it. I loved how absurd it was.

This show is kind of best when it doesn't take itself too seriously. Like, it used to be serious, but then they stopped doing serious well, and now, well, damn it's just good entertainment.

1

u/Hotrock21 1d ago

Had to go back for another rewatch. What a great episode!

•

u/Odd_Amphibian1825 Team Bobby 1h ago

I think I might do the same lol if nothing else, they were still piecing everything together into a good mystery

33

u/Key-Win-8602 1d ago

Is it just me or did the ER nurse just give Eddie the ‘am i looking at an abusive spouse?’ Look?

•

u/IndiaEvans 21h ago

It's so stupid not to be honest about the kid. It's not unusual

•

u/No_Cucumbers_Please 12h ago

its not unusual if it happens once or twice over a longer period of time. 5 times in 3 months is unusual. At this point it’s buck’s failure and he’s only fostering theo. probably doesn’t want to raise any flags and get him taken away.

5

u/TheQuirkyReddit 1d ago

Oh for sure that or she suspect Buck is getting abused by someone whether she thought it was Eddie or someone Eddie knows. I think she doesn't think it's him just based off the conversation but someone Eddie knows.

•

u/luvprue1 20h ago

Well Buck had been in the emergency room 6 time in over a month and he did used the classic red flag line about walking into a door. So of course the nurse/ doctor is going to think he is being abused .

-3

u/No_Cucumbers_Please 1d ago

omg you people will read into anything wont you. lol

•

u/ezb_zeb 15h ago

It's less Buddie and more that hospital staff are trained to be suspicious of interactions between patients and concerned friends and family when the patient has Buck's type of injuries.

3

u/HortenseDaigle Team Maddie 1d ago

I certainly saw it.

4

u/TheQuirkyReddit 1d ago

That's just part of being in the medical field though. You see a repeat patient coming in with injuries and not on the job injuries it's red flags. A good doctor or nurse takes notes of these. I think that people like that are the reason why people in abusive relationship get out, or at least more come out because a doctor or nurse will be like hey are you okay?

13

u/oath2order Dispatch (#BobbyAliveTruther) 1d ago

That scene was absolutely written in the way OP is saying it. Buck says he's clumsy, she side-eyes Eddie.

This is absolutely a trope. "You trip a lot?" is similar to other lines in other shows of doctors suspicious of a domestic violence situation.

2

u/No_Cucumbers_Please 1d ago

clearly. i mean, theo is injuring him over and over and buck is clearly covering something. it IS domestic violence.

when eddie first gets there the dr smiles and treats him warmly. she’s not giving him side eye. she looks eddie dead in the eyes as if to say “are you hearing this bullshit?”

9

u/oath2order Dispatch (#BobbyAliveTruther) 1d ago

when eddie first gets there the dr smiles and treats him warmly. she’s not giving him side eye.

Correct, that is because she side-eyes him specifically when he says he's clumsy, which is later in the scene and not when he immediately gets there.

4

u/Sea-Sky3177 1d ago

I thought so too!

-3

u/WheresMyVino 1d ago

What a stupid ass episode. So we’re back in 1994 and these guys are trying to remake the film Volcano… Athena should be dead too. Let’s see what sci-fi, miraculous crap they pull 🤦🏽‍♂️

•

u/Judgejudyx 18h ago

If not dead horribly burned by that stream

2

dantes peak was so much better

-1

u/WheresMyVino 1d ago

Completely agree

10

u/bwaredapenguin 1d ago

So what the hell were they wearing at the start of the episode? That looked like gear from the 1920s.

26

u/bwaredapenguin 1d ago

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned the Easter egg just before the title card. There was a mylar balloon that bubbled up from the water that said "Happy 10 Years!" which was a nod to the 10th season premiere.

22

u/Historical-Pop8954 1d ago

There was also Eddie saying "Gotta love a thursday".

2

u/bwaredapenguin 1d ago

Nice! I didn't catch that one. In my defense, I haven't had cable or watched scripted TV live in like 15 years lol

8

u/Maatjuhhh 1d ago

My Buddie heart. We already got a family dinner scene now. Even though Theo was running amok, it was nice to see Chris already having a toy car for him and understood that Theo didn't mean no harm. Theo just needs restrictions. But how uncanny, Theo really looks like Buck but younger.

I did enjoy this premiere and the mystery aspect. I totally forgot that it was volcano (I watched the trailer) so I was surprised.

14

u/vaishg_ 1d ago

The volcano CGI was terrible

•

u/Ok_History_7440 20h ago

Yep, it was bad.

5

u/Dear-Grapefruit2561 1d ago

why was there a volcano im crying, can we go back to the more realisitc stuff

9

u/bwaredapenguin 1d ago

Like them saving a billionaire swallowed by a whale then him randomly sending a cop and paramedic into space who save a doomed mission? Or a cop and a firefighter saving a cruise ship? Or beenado? Or a fucking tsunami in LA? IIRC they even had a Hindenburg-esque blimp episode a few years back.

I couldn't possibly imagine anyone on this planet watches this show for realism. We're here for the outlandish camp and bullshit like a single couple being 4 different emergencies in a single episode. This show is so ridiculously off the rails when it comes to realism that it feels like a waking fever dream.

-1

u/NovelRub 1d ago

There's an ocean in California isn't there. So a Tsunami isn't unrealistic

0

u/Dear-Grapefruit2561 1d ago

i mean more like season 1-3

5

u/oath2order Dispatch (#BobbyAliveTruther) 1d ago

Ah yes like the baby stuck in the pipe that was still alive, Chimney's rebar through the skull...the tsunami.

2

u/Dear-Grapefruit2561 1d ago

the baby thing actually happened and it based off a real case, and there are many documented cases of rebar or other objects going through peoples skull (most famously the phineas gage case), and tsunami's happen all the time

•

u/opermonkey 22h ago

most of the wacky things that happened in the earlier seasons happened in real life, with varying levels of artistic license taken.

10

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 1d ago

When has the show been realistic?

•

u/Lucienofthelight 10h ago edited 2h ago

I 100% believe the only proper way to end this series is with an alien invasion. This series ends with Athena shooting an alien and the 118 saving people from crashed UFOs.

0

u/holidayfromreal25 1d ago

Wasn’t Bobby’s death explained by the show runner as “realism”? 😂😭

5

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 1d ago

Nope. Fandom misinterpretation.

13

u/Crochet_ToTheSun 1d ago

I have been reading some conversations here and on other platforms, and I really don't understand the Theo hate. He’s acting like a real kid and, of course, he's causing some trouble for Buck. Like Eddie said, Buck can't just say no to him, and Theo is just a kid.

I'm genuinely interested in this storyline and how it unfolds I think it is a great way to expand Buck's arc, and I want to see how he handles it. I also liked the the relationship between may and Athena and i think this was one of the better season openers in the past few seasons. And i cannot wait for episode 2.

•

u/ezb_zeb 15h ago

I'm excited about this storyline, I'm just afraid they are going to erase all of Buck's experience with kids. There needs to be a better reason than just Buck's a softie.

•

u/Cryptid_Screech Team Buck 4h ago

Buck may have experience with kids, but that doesn't necessarily mean Buck has experience in raising/fostering kids or being in a parental role rather than just an uncle/a fun uncle role.

I really hope they don't erase his experience with kids either, but I would like to see Buck having to learn things that he may not have even realized/thought about before taking in Theo that now he's has to take into consideration (things he may not have had to think too much about as an uncle who isn't raising his niece and nephew)

•

u/ezb_zeb 3h ago

I agree. I had my own learning curve as someone who ways found the middle ground to not ruffle feathers when I became a parent and I made mistakes (all parents do) but the show often imfamtalizes Buck and I just don't see how he's letting himself get hurt to the point of needing medical attention and not correcting Theo. Also have none of the other parents in his life bothered to step up and help him? They know him and his guilt. Or are we going to learn that they don't think he should have taken in Theo and are withholding support (bc that would actually track for some of them).

•

u/Crochet_ToTheSun 11h ago

Yes, me too, because the Theo idea is fun, but it looks like Buck knows nothing about raising kids, even though he is very good with them, and like you said, the softie reason is a bad one. Maybe like that, he is scared he won't accept him, or he does not want to traumatise him, and that is why he is so soft. You know

•

u/IndiaEvans 21h ago

I honestly didn't know/remember who he was! It's so dumb.

5

u/YMMV-But 1d ago

I don’t watch a show about firefighters to see their out of control kids. Theo does act like a real kid, one who is raised by people who have no idea how to handle him or teach him how to act around other people. The word discipline means to teach, and this child badly needs someone to discipline him, to teach him how to control himself, how to behave towards other people and how to act. Buck is doing this child no favors, and this storyline just makes Buck look irresponsible and ignorant.

Children don’t need parents who can’t say no to them. They need parents who will say no to them, when warranted, and set them up to be independent responsible people whom other people like to be around.

5

u/UsualFirefighter9 1d ago

"Donor not dad," except now, thanks to a badly written series of events that make zero sense, Donor is Dad. It spits in the face of every IVF using parent and foster parent and adoptive parent - because a single white man with a dangerous job and a drug addiction got licensed to foster and/or adopt in a fingersnap while Henren waited years with a million hoops to jump.

Then the general dislike of fridging the mother and her husband to give Buck "his kid back" after they blamed Buck for the kid needing to see "three specialists" because of his behavioral issues.

Then couple that with how passive aggressively manipulative the asking process was to begin with and the showrunner flirting with having the mom and Buck hook up in the last month of her pregnancy because her hubby suddenly turned into a flakey asshole (and apparently stayed there but whatever, he's dead now.)

The kid actors are adorable and should do well in their lives, but the whole thing onscreen is wrong.

•

u/ezb_zeb 10h ago

I don't have as strong feelings as you (and don't want to be dismissive of yours). I do think the blaming Buck for Theo's behavior was very rushed. I'm a single mom by choice and remember actively rejecting the concept the first time I accidently (and to myself) credited one of my son's negative behaviors to his sperm donor. I'm sure he's got some, but it's just as easy to find those behaviors in me and my family. It's just easier to scapegoat the person who's more of a vague concept that a real human. If they'd given that storyline a tiny bit more time, they could have let Theo's parents come back and apologize (and then apparently die). I'd also like to have seen more information on why Theo didn't seem to have family who could take them him.

19

u/AbbiejeanKane 1d ago

I really enjoyed the premiere. My faves were Athena and May and the family on the bus. Angela looks even more beautiful this season. She and the actress playing May are simply wonderful in their scenes together. I hope that May and Ravi's relationship is featured prominently this season. I was surprised about how much I enjoy Harry as a rookie firefighter. He is a good addition to the crew.

911 always does a good job with the characterization of the accident victims. I think that family on the bus is up there among its best. The family arguing about the potential move, then daughter staying with her injured father, followed by tthe father confessing that he had lost his job, and the daughter then telling her brother that they should move to Calfornia was really sweet.

I like Maddie's new role in emergency services, but I really hope that actress who plays Sue returns to the show.

Quite honestly, I completely forgot about Theo's existence until the hospital scene. The little boy playing Theo is adorable. I do recall that the parents contacted Buck because Theo has behavioral problems which must be worse now since he has undergone this trauma and upheaval. Buck will need help. He got Carla to help Eddie with Chris when he first arrived. It is Eddie's turn to convince Buck tht he needs help. Eddie should reach out to Carla.

4

u/oath2order Dispatch (#BobbyAliveTruther) 1d ago

911 always does a good job with the characterization of the accident victims.

It's my favorite part of the show; the victims do feel like actual people.

32

u/Francl27 1d ago

Buck... ugh dude, parent your kid.

6

u/QAFLF 🏳️‍🌈 1d ago

Athena, Maddie, and May were the highlights. They managed to make both promotions interesting here, and the appeal of giving May more to work with was always obvious. I hope they're able to balance the hospital as a new significant recuring location.

It was slightly dissappointing how little most of the 118 got outside of the emergencies. I'm curious how the balance of the action and the personal will be over the three episodes. It definitly felt like this was more action oriented than the first episode of 9. Hopefully that means a better spread of the personal in the remaining ones.

The Buddie stuff at this point felt more like vibes than really effective story set up. Like yeah we got the cute family subtext in both scenes, and I'm encouraged by the small details they gave Chris. Please god let this finally be the storyline that really develops his point of view.

But otherwise all we really got from it so far is another round of Buddie slightly disconnected and struggling to communicate without any clarity on why exactly. Is Eddie hesitant to give advice because he's worried about overstepping? The hospital scene ending because Theo interrupts makes it hard to read. Did he try to give advice previously and Buck reacted poorly? Is Buck just in his feelings still from 9x18 and feeling insecure about his place in Eddie and Chris' lives, or insecure about his ability to take care of Theo, or how others precieve his ability to do so? Him lying to the doctor was maybe suggesting the later, but it mostly just seemed really stupid. Like you're just making yourself seem suspicious Buck.

In part right now it just kinda seems like we've walked into the exact same problem they had with Chris leaving being used as a cliff hanger. The time jump leaves you with a period of time where it just doesn't make any sense for them not to have had a conversation about this already, but there's no indication that they have, so we're left in this disoriented space trying to figure out if the resolution of this is going to involve filling in that gap and explaining what's caused this communication breakdown, or is this just Tim again completely ignoring the realtionship between timing and story. And of course the problem is only amplified either way because of the opening disaster arc.

Hopefully they manage to give them both a little more interiority in the remaining 2 episodes, and really set themselves up for an indepth episode on it in 4, 5, or 6.

4

u/kaiser11492 Team Athena 1d ago

Glad to see I’m not the only who noticed this episode was mostly action and emergency based. While that doesn’t make the episode bad, it does make most of the episode feel tense. Like it felt we as the viewers got little time to get a breather from the intensity. I mean previous season premieres usually had a fair share of moments of dealing with personal, off-duty aspects of the lives of the characters before focusing on the major disaster emergency.

1

u/QAFLF 🏳️‍🌈 1d ago

For sure, I don't have any problem in theory with starting with more intensity up top. As much as I do think 9x01 was clearly the best episode of that arc, it may have just been the final nail in the coffin of that pattern of episode 1 being the emotional set up, and then the next 2 (or 3) being the major event. At this point it was making the event feel like an interruption, where jumping right in here with the massive 15 minute set piece sinkhole gave this a great energy. It's been a while since they executed a set piece that well.

The only thing I'll be looking out for going forward is whether or not they really are distributing those emotional check ins more evenly (maybe Hen gets the C story in 2, Ravi in 3 etc), or as the pessimistic part of my brain is perhaps slightly worried, did Tim just sacrifice most of that to shove a four part disaster into three episodes because he didn't like that critique last season.

3

u/omnipotentsandwich 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ty Worrell must be doing a Josh Shapiro impression. He says things the way Shapiro does and even had a voice similar to his. One of Shapiro's biggest accomplishments is fixing a major bridge quickly, so I can see the connection.

4

u/PlayMaker95 1d ago

Hen: It’s a volcano.
Me: Yeah… no shit! Really? Took all of you this long to finally put it together?

11

u/londonwayne90 1d ago

I thought it was better than the last couple season openers and I liked how we got a bit of everyone. I look forward to the next episode to see where this insane random volcano goes. My one issue is Theo, which I was against last season and now I'm fully over it and I need them to wrap it up and send Theo to someone else better prepared to take care of him.

3

u/UsualFirefighter9 1d ago

I saw him gone at midseason but honestly, this would not be the first time somebody people dislike has overstayed their usefulness when it comes to Buck.

Minnie doesn't want to actually write an ongoing storyline for him, or Eddie, or even Hen. He just likes watching them spin in circles because it's easier and apparently the GA watching once a month eat it up.

6

u/cristoff-ellie 1d ago

i'm so glad i'm not the only one who isn't invested in the whole theo storyline. if buck was to adopt him, give him the baby jenna from the flash treatment lol.

24

u/Buddie_Butterflies 1d ago

Disclaimer I don't think that Eddie or Buck are the bad guy in this. Also this is coming from being a mother for the last 18 years. I truly hope this story isn't heading where I think it is, because after watching tonight I see the writing on the wall.

That hospital scene the Doctor asking about the pattern she looked concern that he's a battered husband, and he sounded like one too. He's hiding his inures from his family. I'm annoyed they cut out the firehouse scenes.

Buck is in over his head, and if he doesn't ask for help I fear he's going to lose Theo. I think he's trying to be his friend. Like he said he can't say no to him. The kid is an orphan he lost both his parents his heart is in the right place. Buck is the right choice for Theo. A million percent but until he believes it't not going to happen.Buck has to believe in himself and Buck also has to ask for help. He he has Eddie, Maddie, Chimney, Hen Athena and the rest of the 118 family to support him.

Eddie's reaction is 100% on point because omg I wanted to put my hand though that TV turn off that damn dinosaur and sit Theo down and loving but sternly explain why we don't behave like that and the consequences for that behavior. Eddie was sweet to him at the hospital, but yes Eddie Diaz I get you. If my daughter had ran around the house like that she would be given one warning before she was placed in time out. So watching it happen I probably would be biting my tounge too.

Christopher falling that scene was played well. I love that Theo apologized right away and didn't need to be told. I love that Christopher understood and wasn't mad. Could Eddie have handled that part better maybe but Christopher could have been seriously hurt. I don't think he's mad at Theo yes his eyes dart over to him but when I'm looking at a kid like that I'm judging the parents not the kid.

THey both need to talk to each other. Buck needs to ask for help and Eddie needs to offer help if Buck wont' ask.

5

u/YMMV-But 1d ago

Theo apologized like he knows that “sorry” is the right thing to say because he’s been taught by the adults that saying “sorry” will get him out of trouble, not like he genuinely understood that he had hurt Chris and that hurting people is bad.

•

u/ezb_zeb 10h ago

Theo's apology totally sounded like my son who thinks saying it was an accident absolves him of any responsibility (esp with clean up). It's a very kid way of thinking, what we didn't see was the appropriate parental response.

2

u/Buddie_Butterflies 1d ago

Disagree he sounded sad that Christopher fell down.

I’m going to lowkey laugh if at some point law enforcement is called for spousal abuse and they go to Eddie’s house and poor Eddie will have to explain everything and they find out it’s……adult abuse by a child….?

u/UsualFirefighter9 1d ago

I have only seen clips, not the ep, but it's supposedly been months?

I can't see how Maddie wouldn't have had them over for a playdate with Jee and the baby in all that time. Hen and Karen's kids are older, so dinner there would look a great deal like the one with Eddie. They've seen the problems, Buck got embarrassed, now he's avoiding them.

And nobody has time for his bad decisions or his personal dramas, so they're not going to keep riding him about them until something - like his addiction issues - hit critical mass. Broke nose and Eddie finding out it's not even close to the first ER visit would've been that, but, volcano.

I don't know whether Buck's been nerfed or flanderized but this is just another demo of it and I'm tired, boss

•

u/ezb_zeb 10h ago

Actually Oliver's broken ankle is going to nerf Buck for a bit. But the writers need to be better at accommodating

•

u/UsualFirefighter9 7h ago

They have a bts of Oliver, complete with cast and crutch, being helped into the volcano pit to film cutting somebody out of something, so I don't think so, honestly.

Just a lot of distance body double shots and close ups from the waist up.

•

u/ezb_zeb 2h ago

Yes, but that careful angling just makes the scenes less fluid.

You didn't watch your missing out. Love Eddie Love Buck Love 911

Hard to judge this episode when it was such a Part 1 in every regard. Intrigued to see where they take it all though.

And curious if the blondening of Madney will remain an unexplained noodle inccident or if they'll tell us later lol

1

u/kaiser11492 Team Athena 1d ago

You mean similar to when Eddie grew a mustache, only for the show to explain he grew it to hide his problems?

u/benderlax 2d ago

Theo hurting Buck is one thing, but him tripping Chris was just too far.

u/HighonStarshine Firehouse 118 2d ago

This is miles better than last season’s premiere.

I’m intrigued. I’m sat.

The 118. Love getting to see them all in action again! The aquarium call felt very nostalgic 911. Hen + Eddie + Chim always makes for a good call.

Buckley. I’m feeling like this is going to be a case of Buck really wanting Theo to like him and be happy + also not wanting to upset him. It’s too early to judge the storyline but I’m hoping it leads to Buck and Eddie getting more involved with each other again. There’s clearly going to be conflict and if done well, could be a really good opportunity for them to showcase their relationship in a new light.

Prediction: Buck and Eddie argue over parenting styles. Buck says something hurtful in defense, there’s a rift. They make up when Eddie remembers what it was like when Chris was growing up and Buck realizes parenting is actually really hard.

May. I love her. That’s it, that’s the whole sentence. I hope we see more of her and Ravi.

Hen. I may be reading into it but that look she gave at the end of the aquarium call felt ominous. Anxiety? PTSD? Is she sick again? We’ll see!

Chim. Killing it as Cap!

Maddie. Killing it as the new Sue! Give us more of this Maddie please!!!!!

Athena. Looooooove this hair and look on her. My goodness, Angela Basset is just spectacular. I don’t know how to feel about this partner of hers. I don’t trust him. But I can’t really remember him from last season. (I need a rewatch) I can see we’re going to get more Athena throwing herself into her work but it was so good to watch her interact with May.

Overall, I’m glad we’re back! Pretty solid episode. Pretty solid opening disaster. 7/10.

3

u/TweeKINGKev 1d ago

I really hope her partner is t corrupt at all and it’s just that he is the very veteran detective who just does things by the book and when the case is close he moves on, unlike Athena who we know doesn’t let things go regardless.

A nice twist in the story would be for Athena to be the one who gets the veteran partner to find his drive to be relentless and not just give in to “well we got the criminal, case closed” when there is indeed more to it.

Last thing we need is another dirty cop story, I’m exhausted from them

The season premiere was definitely satisfactory for it went directly towards the action and emergencies in terms of the plot, all of which built up to the climatic volcanic eruption.

Of course a downside of heading directly into the action and emergencies that all revolve around the disaster is that we didn’t have much time to see the personal lives of the characters. I mean very little time was spent on addressing Buck’s difficulty taking care of Theo. Also, we barely saw much of May in her new position.

Meanwhile I’m curious on how the case Athena is working on will lead to and how it’s going to tie in with the volcano besides getting her stuck underground. Like did the robbers somehow disturb something while digging the tunnels that eventually led to the eruption, hence why all of them were severely burned?

Also, I swear one of the guys helping out the head of emergency services (who I will not be surprised if he gets killed off seeing how much of a jerk he was) at the sinkhole just as it started to make noises was Matthew Sparks, the former power-mad police officer who accidentally shot an uncooperative driver in S8 E7. I mean the show’s creators teased in an interview he would return this season as someone working a comfortable job for the city.

Can’t wait next week to see how the 118 and the city of Los Angeles deals with such an unprecedented disaster. Also, based on the preview for Nashville, it seems like there’s going to be a mini crossover (which I always love) in the form of the Nashville 113 asking Buck and the L.A. 118 how to save their own trapped baby in a pipe while the latter are dealing with the volcano. Interestingly when the creators teased they were going to ask Buck for advice, I thought it would’ve been for the murder hornet emergency like in the trailer seeing how the 118 dealt with the beenado.

u/LostInStories222 21h ago

the head of emergency services (who I will not be surprised if he gets killed off seeing how much of a jerk he was)

The jerk got hit by a full stream of lava in the last scene. I don't think there's any chance of surviving that.

18

u/jdessy 2d ago

I got some thoughts.

First off, honestly one of the better openers they've had in a few years. They set up the disaster decently well, connected everyone together, and gave us some solid character beats. I'm not saying this is suddenly some OMG amazing opener, and I still need to see how things play out, but definitely in the top half of openers thus far.

Not much else to say beyond that. Athena's detective plot was solid, Maddie investigating the calls she got at least got her involved, which is already better than the last couple of seasons and using her, and some really good calls overall.

Now, time for the rough part of the episode, which was my worry and still remains my worry, which is Theo. I knew I was going to struggle with this new phase in Buck's story and nothing that they presented eased my worries. You're telling me that Buck's just gonna....let Theo run wild and injure him and having not worried about Theo injuring other people before Chris? He was just happy to accept the injuries without getting him help? Like, at all? Because what Theo is doing is not normal. He either has some mental health issues that Buck needed to get dealt with long before this point, or he has behavioural issues that Buck's needed to correct and never did. He's learning to be a parent, foster or not, but holy hell, this isn't a great storyline for Buck and also part of why I didn't want a kid involved in the first place.

I'm just...eh, perplexed, and anything they need to do to get me on board with Theo isn't working thus far. They need to deal with the Theo injuring people plot really quickly.

5

u/Historical-Pop8954 1d ago

I think Theo needs ADHD meds.

2

u/glittermetalprincess 1d ago

Either he goes to school and they drag Buck through getting a doctor and an IEP or Theo gets kicked out and Buck goes overboard in the other direction trying to not have the spectre of CPS on his ass. I know schools tend towards the lesser side of great with kids who don't fit in some way, but there has to be something external or none of this will change and Buck won't see a reason to try something different.

6

u/cookierunningme 2d ago

I don't have an issue with the plot itself, I just knew the execution would've been mediocre, especially if they want to fit it as a B-plot in a larger storyline, so now they have to introduce the issue piecemeal in bland badly shoehorned-in scenes. That said, while I do have a thousand abandoned Buck storylines I'd rather see picked up, I doubt they'd do a much better job. Everything abt this was kinda predictable.

This show desperately needs two hour premiers

1

u/glittermetalprincess 1d ago

I'd rather it start after Thanksgiving with a 3 hour premiere, the whole big emergency doodat like those cheesy event disaster two-parters that we used to have in the 90s, which seems like Tim's style - then take like a 1-2 week break for holiday movies and games, and run straight through from January. If they went back to a 21-22ep season they could do like 6-7 episodes Nov/Dec, 6/7 eps Jan-Mar, and then 6/7 eps April/May to end in sweeps, but with 18 it would be more like 6 in Jan/Dec, 4 in February then the rest in April/May, go straight through to finish mid April or do the annoying thing where they take a week off every time they have to compete with an event on another network - and I don't like the week-on-week-off thing they do to spread epis out and avoid competing with big things on other networks.

They could still go to every ad break with a zomg what now moment, but free themselves from having to contain everything in neat sections of 42 minutes (lbr reruns are now like 24/7 channels or 2-3 eps at a time so syndication isn't an excuse - if I can watch an entire season of Blue Bloods in 6 days on free to air in Australia they really don't have an excuse).

1

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 1d ago

Okay… that’s not how they do network television. Tim doesn’t decide when the show airs. They never air episodes around or after Thanksgiving.

2

u/glittermetalprincess 1d ago

That's why it's what I would like, as opposed to what is reality - "I'd rather..." and "I don't like..." being indicators of same.

11

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 2d ago

We’re so back.

u/u_395djk 2d ago

I stopped watching after episode 1 last season. Did it get better this season?

•

u/Status_Routine1434 12h ago

No this was just as ridiculous. I think I'm done now too.

2

u/Specific_Lettuce_521 2d ago

Season 9 was good though, even if you dislike the space arc. This episode was a great start to season 10.

17

u/cookierunningme 2d ago

I saw Theo being a hazard for the kid with mobility issues from miles away and was honestly hoping there'd be some drama utilizing Chris' moody teen personality they've been developing lol.

20

u/hadapurpura And that’s no cap 2d ago

The doctor suspects Eddie’s being abusive to Buck just enough to give him the stink eye, but not enough to report the situation

3

u/glittermetalprincess 1d ago

If this was Chicago Med they'd admit Buck and run endless tests 'to work out what's going on' and then send a psychiatrist in when they all come back normal and by the end of it Buck would be 'fixed' with a 5 minute chat and a 'come back any time'. DV wouldn't even enter the picture even if Eddie turned up in a harness and started giving puppy dog eyes to Ripley, Frost and Tanaka-Reed.

Meanwhile random unnamed doctor is like '4 "accidents"... hmm... ok bye.'

9

u/Ok-Love-645 2d ago

tbf a few instances of injuries isnt really enough to go very far on. plus sadly there isn’t much the hospital staff can do if the victim of DV isn’t actually receptive to/ asking for help. (which obviously buck isn’t because eddie isn’t actually abusing him 😭)

14

u/Immediate-Remove2174 Team Maddie 2d ago

It was good but I didn’t get why athena went down there

•

u/LostInStories222 21h ago

It was such a "because plot" moment. It really made no sense. She had already proved there was a heist and found a stolen ring. There was nothing to be gained and she should be well aware of all the sinkhole instability nearby.

•

u/PlayMaker95 20h ago

Except she didn’t know it was because of a volcano, for one thing. Besides that, she had to investigate the crime scene and secure evidence. And to see for herself if there was anyone else from the heist crew whom were unknowingly left behind down in those tunnels and possibly still alive.

•

u/LostInStories222 18h ago

I didn't say volcano. She would know if she's near the sinkhole and going underground. Regardless, even if she's miles from the sinkhole, she knows that someone who went down there was burned and died. And she technically contaminated the scene. She should have called backup and CSI to secure it. There weren't concerns about another person.  (Why would the crew anonymously drop off one person and not another?) It's all very ridiculous and super "because plot" reasons need Athena in danger.

12

u/PlayMaker95 1d ago

Because unfortunately, they decided to once again repeat their pattern. Start the season with a real shitstorm, have Athena somehow get caught up right in the middle of said shitstorm, and then help get her out of it.

19

u/shigui18 2d ago

I like Athena's hair. She does not look her age at all but this really makes her look younger.

3

u/ElegantGazelle2100 1d ago

Yes I never understood why they gave her hairstyles in seasons past that always aged her. Angela Basset always looks younger than her age.

•

u/ezb_zeb 10h ago

I think it was to reflect her role as a patrol officer. Now as to why they didn't acknowledge she was wearing a wig and let her have a softer off duty look I'll have to attribute to white people stupidity. They let her Captian wear her hair down off duty.

5

u/Sad-Guidance9105 2d ago

Inoffensive episode. Not a fan of Tim retconning Maddie’s name, but it is what it is.

1

u/_HGCenty Script TBD 1d ago

We'll see if it's just because it was a super formal setting or if Tim / ABC thought viewers aren't able to understand Maddie and Buck are siblings without the Buckley bit...

2

u/DMLOVELETTERS he calls me his little buddy, and he touches me 2d ago

Must’ve missed that, how was it retconned?

2

u/Sad-Guidance9105 2d ago

I’ll just copy my comment: She has exclusively referred to herself and been referred to as Maddie Han post S7E6, even the S8 press release had her name officially as “Maddie Han”. It’s a retcon, not a huge one but still.

7

u/cookierunningme 2d ago

It's not hyphenated so I'd assume it's the case of putting her maiden name as a middle name and that being ommited in those other situations. Why they'd waste space putting a middle name on the plaque is beyond me, but I feel like she was called Maddie Buckley Han for a full name at some point b4?

1

u/Sad-Guidance9105 1d ago

She never was before (I checked). It is now her full name canonically but it was not before.

4

u/Substantial_Ad8853 Team Maddie 1d ago

It’s probably the same thing Athena did. Legally and personally she’s Athena Grant-Nash, but at work she’s Athena Grant. (Or in this case, Maddie Han, but legally she’s Maddie Buckley-Han and that’s why the plaque has both)

3

u/sw911ff 2d ago

That’s how my BFF did it. Her middle name is her maiden name and last name her married name.

2

u/lastseason 2d ago

You don't actually need the hyphen.. you can just have two last names.

1

u/cookierunningme 2d ago

Oh, I see, didn't know it was a thing in the US with how documents are set up and all. Then she could still pick up and drop the second-to-last name in different situations for brevity? I do that but it's clearly a different cultural context that I'm missing here lol

1

u/glittermetalprincess 1d ago

You can do that yeah - your legal documents say one thing, but at work you generally can choose a 'preferred name' which is what your ID and email signature and various logins might use, and socially you can use whatever name you want to be called.

Also, when you get married you don't have to change your legal name at all, but if you want to, you can use your marriage certificate as evidence to request a name change, or for the name on your accounts and documents to be changed. In theory you can therefore go to like, the bank, and have the name on your account changed to have the extra family name, but leave your work name the same, or whatever configuration you want or feel comfortable with.

IT hate it as with any name change since it's usually a PITA in the back end (especially with cybersecurity being so vital now), but everyone else kind of just rolls with it, especially with married names since the concept is fairly well embedded, as with 'family name as a middle name'.

The main throughline for ID in the US is the SSN, and in legal contexts (contracts, depositions, affidavits etc.) the identifiers usually are name and address and/or job, so using FirstName MarriedName because it's shorter than FirstName Family Name MarriedName isn't a huge deal since there's other ways to verify ID as well.

If she uses Maddie Han as preferred for her day-to-day login and name badge and then some rando gets a list of names from HR and prints out placards based on the name on file, that's pretty much exactly what it would look like.

1

u/mrose1491 Team Eddie 2d ago

It is a thing here in the us but not as common and it sometimes can be a pain in the butt lol. But I always assumed she had two last names and they just bounce between the two ways to say it.. it was the same when her last name was Buckley Kendall

15

u/mrose1491 Team Eddie 2d ago

I liked it!! Good pacing, the groundwork to the character stories they’re building, I wish it was a two hour premiere

4

u/PushFew6998 2d ago

It would have been a good two hour premiere with the 3rd ep next week. I felt like we were just getting to the action as the hour ended! However, 9-1-1 Nashville and Greys Anatomy also had their premieres tonight!

I didn't know people came to this show looking for realism. It was pretty clear from season 1 the show was campy.

We're specifically referring to an interview given by the showrunner when people blew up at him for doing something stupid in a badly written plotline during the final chunk of season eight.

Oh, he did the same thing end of season eight, exactly three eps after Bobby died "for realism."

Cart cop, some jerk and his girlfriend lived after being literally ten feet from an explosion strong enough to collapse a nineteen story building. With three hundred people in it, on a work day, who also all lived. Gerrard makes a point to mention it in his "farewell" speech.
