Mod Post - The Daily Megathread The Daily Megathread
Welcome to The Daily Megathread - r/50501's home for daily discussion!
This megathread exists so that you can post reactions, images, or anything that might otherwise belong on our sister subreddits r/ThePeoplesPress, r/LiveProtestUpdates or r/50501ContentCorner. While the main goal of this megathread is to prevent protest announcements from being drowned out, we also want to give our community a place where they can discuss things that would otherwise not be allowed as a post on r/50501.
Comments that may be appropriate for the daily megathread may include, but are not limited to:
- Discussing current US or world events
- Sharing personal opinions on politicians/political parties
- Other posts that may break the "Call to Action" rule or our rule on related content, which otherwise wouldn't fit at r/ThePeoplesPress, r/LiveProtestUpdates or r/50501ContentCorner
As a reminder, news threads go to r/ThePeoplesPress while videos go either to the People's Press or r/50501ContentCorner. Posts that are on the ground reporting on a protest must go to r/LiveProtestUpdates. If you have posted there, or if you want to share a post from another subreddit, you are welcome to link it here!
Remember that subreddit rules still apply, especially our commitment to respectful discourse and our commitment to citing our sources. If you claim something true, prove it - and don't attack the person behind the claim!
If you have a question about how our rules are enforced, please check out the wiki page on our rules for more information! For additional questions, please send us a modmail.

Movement Brainstorm General Strike
I was listening to the radio this morning and they were talking about the GTA VI release and how it’s predicted that 1.5 million people are going to not show up to work. This will reportedly cause at least a billion in lost revenue. The release is November 18th so what if we organize a general strike for that day? I listened to a speech Obama gave last night about how one voice can change a room, can change a city, can change a state, can change a country, can change the world. I’m trying to be that one voice. We should all try to be that one voice. I’ve never organized anything like this before so I’m coming here to get ideas and get the idea out there and maybe we can keep creating change.

Voices of Resistance U.S. officials privately advise states fearing Trump election meddling
This is how authoritarianism is thwarted by the pillars of support pushing back. In this instance we have one of the government pillars in play.
Call to Action Trans people are being targeted with ballot initiatives in five states
The Trump Administration has been a disaster so naturally, we’re seeing a lot of talk about how scary trans people are from Republicans in these midterms. After all, what else are they going to talk about? Bullying trans kids has been one of the few pieces of Trump’s platform he’s followed through on, and the right is in desperate need of some marginalized group to scapegoat for our nation’s problems so no one will notice how many of them he’s actively making worse.
This has been central to their ad campaigns in races like Talarico-Paxton in Texas and Brown-Husted in Ohio, and in five states (Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Washington) they’re hoping to encourage their voters to turn out by putting trans issues directly on the ballot as initiatives. (In a sixth, Vermont, folks will consider adding a broad civil rights guarantee to their state constitution) which will explicitly protect against discrimination based on gender identity and expression along with race, ethnicity, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation and national origin.)
This is all extremely bad news for trans people who just want to live their lives in peace – kids who want to be able to act like any other kid, folks who need health care from doctors who aren’t constantly looking over their shoulder. But it’s also an opportunity to change conventional wisdom in the commentariat - combining candidate victories with direct voter rebukes to these anti-trans ballot initiatives has the potential to bust this myth and shift the political landscape against this kind of open bigotry.
Let’s do our part to help beat the anti-trans initiatives. We can:
☎️ Join Advocates for Trans Equality in phonebanking into states with anti-trans ballot initiatives Tuesday-Thursday evenings and weekend nights by signing up here and Fridays by signing up here. We can help recruit more volunteers for these calls on Monday nights here.
☎️💬 We can phonebank to beat Amendment 3 in Missouri, which is using transphobia as a hook to ban abortion, on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons here. We can also join textbanks on Thursdays here and Tuesdays here.
☎️💬 We can make calls to help defeat Proposition 134 and 135 in Colorado on Tuesdays here, Wednesdays here, Thursdays here, and Saturdays here and here. We can also textbank to beat them and an anti-immigrant measure) with Rocky Mountain Equality any time here.
☎️ We can volunteer with No Hate in Washington State for shifts on Wednesdays here, Fridays here and Sundays here.
☎️ We can help Progress Arizona make calls against Proposition 318 and other regressive ballot measures tomorrow at 7:30PM ET here.
And as always, we can find even more ways to help win in these midterms here.

Voices of Resistance Free resource for signs, canvassing, and arguments: 101 documented cases of second-term misconduct, every claim sourced
Disclosure up front: our small team built this, and it's free, no paywall or signup.
When people ask "impeach for what?" or "where's the proof?", we wanted a single place to point them. 1000reasonstoimpeach.com has 101 cases from the second term, sorted into 11 categories. Every claim is footnoted to the court order, filing, or government record behind it (3,011 sources total).
A few ways it might be useful before November 3:
- Signs and posts: every case opens with a one-line headline you can use as-is, like "Trump Fired 17 Inspectors General in One Day."
- Canvassing and family arguments: the five election cases (ballot controls, agents at the polls, the census) are here: 1000reasonstoimpeach.com/elections-and-voting.category.html
- Fact-checking: if someone says it didn't happen, the source documents are right under each claim.
If you spot an error or think a case is weak, tell us. We'd rather fix it than have someone get burned using it.

No surprise that the media hasn't widely covered turnout for Saturday's events, but it feels like this sub is way too quiet.

Digital Infrastructure Trump Appointees Asked a Federal Cybersecurity Agency to Secretly Acquire a Voting Machine — and Hack It
We now have clear evidence that he has attempted to hack voting machines ahead of the midterm elections. Share this article with anyone you know, especially if they are election workers or volunteers. We need to overwhelm them on Nov 3rd. Most importantly, VOTE.

NOTHING!! We need to get the attention of the power hungry people that we are not going to tolerate anymore. They will not have 24 hours of profit. This could happen again unless we see improvements. Do you think this is a good idea?

Call to Action We all gotta sign dudes!
The ACLU hosting a petition, that will be presented to members of congress during the lame duck period, to pass legislation that will end mandatory detention in ICE custody, and as many of us as possible need to sign, to show we support that legislation.
Call to Action What to do to help win the midterms - get plugged in ASAP
More than 9.5 million Americans have already cast their ballots in these midterms, and we're just 15 days away from the end. We are running out of chances to make our case for Democratic and independent candidates, convince potential non-voters to show up, help those at risk of being suppressed make their ballots count and lay the groundwork for stopping any attempts at election theft by MAGA.
Each of our individual parts in this work can feel very, very small. It’s also typically unglamorous (read: boring) and not all that pleasant. (I too don’t really love bothering people just trying to live their lives to talk about the absolute mess that our politics is!) But each of us doing our part can add up to a meaningful difference. One person throwing a stick in a river won’t stop a drop of water from flowing, but hundreds of thousands of people doing so adds up to a dam.
If we or anyone in our lives worried about the outcome of the midterms is still looking for ways to get involved with whatever time they have available, here’s some options:
☎️ MAKE CALLS TO PERSUADE AND TURN OUT VOTERS. For folks who don’t pay much attention to politics, it takes multiple contacts from a campaign to prompt them to identify their polling location, show up and put their support behind an individual candidate. Right now you can make take a shift making these calls from 9 in the morning to 11 at night, or take 15 minutes to do so at any moment it works with your schedule. We can find phonebanks to sign up for organized by specific races here or by time and day here.
☎️ HAZ LLAMADAS EN ESPAÑOL. If we’re conversational in Spanish, we’re especially needed on the phones to reach out to the Latino community as they swing hard against Donald Trump. We can find a full schedule of Spanish-language phonebanks here.
💬 TEXT TO PERSUADE AND TURN OUT VOTERS. Textbanking is a fast and effective way to ID who our supporters are and get them valuable information on where to go and what to do to make their ballots count. It’s also frequently conducted by organizations that will continue to need our help regularly after Election Day is over, like the Working Families Party, Field Team 6, We The Fighters and Black Voters Matter. We can find shifts and running opportunities to text here.
🗣️ REACH OUT TO AT RISK VOTERS TO HELP THEM CAST THEIR BALLOTS. If we’re looking to help by reaching people who are likely to be glad, rather than annoyed, to hear from us, there’s a lot of work being done right now to help beat voter suppression one ballot at a time – helping folks get the photo IDs they need, fix any potential issues with their registration, address problems on absentee ballots they could prevent them from being counted, and more. We can join various state Democratic parties, VoteRiders, VoPro Pros and more in making these calls here.
☎️ MAKE CALLS TO RECRUIT VOTER PROTECTION VOLUNTEERS. We need folks in place to prepare for whatever Trump throws at us on Election Day, whether it’s just their standard barriers to the ballot box or ICE at the polls. Right now, we’re recruiting that team – poll workers, poll monitors, staff for voter assistance hotlines, and more. We can find opportunities to bring more volunteers on board here.
BUILD THE ELECTION DEFENSE TEAM
🗳️ SIGN UP TO HELP WORK ELECTION DAY AND AFTER. Of course, we can also step up to do this work ourselves. It’s a much better way to spend Election Day than frantically refreshing for news updates and results! We can sign up as poll workers (checking in voters, answering their questions, issuing ballots, setting up machines, etc) here, monitor polling places with partisan or non-partisan teams here, get trained to staff voter assistance hotlines here, monitor the count here, and help “cure” ballots that might otherwise be thrown out here.
💵 DONATE WHERE IT WILL MAKE THE MOST DIFFERENCE. We’re all being inundated with requests for money right now, a lot of it from campaigns where our extra $10 really won’t make much of a difference. The team at Oath helps us identify which races will give us the most bang for our buck and where we can have the most impact on the issues we care about. Let’s check out their recommendations here.

Movement Brainstorm Hypothetical Question: Arresting a Corrupt Federal Official
Suppose evidence were gathered that could prove in a court of law that some federal government official were corrupt -- accepting bribes, committing treason, or whatever.
Could that official be arrested and prosecuted without first impeaching him? Granted, the convicted official would retain his office.
I ask, because I'm pretty sure that this has actually happened in NJ, and I'm wondering whether it would be feasible at the federal level.
Now extend that question to a state indicting and arresting a federal official for a state crime. Is that feasible?
