[MOD POST] Having trouble with Secure Boot? Check here first

Hello,

The expiration of the 2011 Microsoft KEK CA and the 2011 Microsoft UEFI CA certificates at the end of June 2025 has caused problems with Secure Boot on computers for various folks who have not been able to apply a UEFI (BIOS) firmware update for various reasons.

Because the steps for updating firmware vary not just from manufacturer to manufacturer but between individual models as well, it can be difficult to provide specific assistance and guidance in updating your firmware unless the person helping you has the same hardware.

Below is a list of manufacturers, their Secure Boot certificate update guidance, and links to their support forum(s) or subreddit(s). You may wish to try asking in these places first for expert guidance in updating your firmware, as the people there are going to be a lot more familiar with your device.

NOTE: Please check back periodically for updates to this list.

If you have an update for a manufacturer, please reply with it and we will get it added to the list above.

What to do if no Secure Boot certificate update is available from your manuafacturer

If your manufacturer does not have an update, not all is lost: You can still manually install the 2023 Windows UEFI CA certificate update, by issuing the following two commands from an elevated PowerShell (filename: POWERSHELL.EXE) prompt:

REG.EXE ADD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Secureboot /v AvailableUpdates /t REG_DWORD /d 0x5944 /f Start-ScheduledTask -TaskName "\Microsoft\Windows\PI\Secure-Boot-Update"

Then restart the computer and allow the update to be applied.

NOTE: Two (or more) reboots may be required for installation.

Once completed, you can verify the new certificate has been installed by issuing the following command at an elevated PowerShell prompt:

([System.Text.Encoding]::ASCII.GetString((Get-SecureBootUEFI db).bytes) -match 'Windows UEFI CA 2023')

If the certificate has been installed installed, the response back will be "True". You can also use that same command to check if the certificate is already installed.

Aryeh Goretsky

Windows ASUS storage information, not showing up

So I was trying to do some schoolwork and my PC just kept shutting down. Didn’t brought me to the UEFI BIOS utility EZ mode. Is says the storage information has nothing underneath it and all the boot has nothing either. I’ve tried unplug and plug it back in restarting it even taking the SSD card out and cleaning it up a little bit and putting it back in. I really have no idea what I’m even supposed to do. I spent like the past hour looking up YouTube videos and stuff and still hasn’t helped. Do y’all know what I can do? Do I have to replace my entire SSD card?

HP 15s-eq2132AU BIOS Administrator Password Issue — CMOS Reset Didn't Help, Need Advice

Hi everyone,

I have an HP 15s-eq2132AU laptop, and I'm facing an issue with the BIOS administrator password. I'm looking for help from anyone who has experience with HP laptop BIOS security.

The problem:

  • Whenever I try to access the BIOS or perform certain firmware-level operations, the laptop asks for an Administrator password.
  • I don't know the password.
  • After entering the wrong password three times, the laptop restarts without displaying an error code or any further instructions.
  • Windows still boots and works normally.

Things I've already tried:

  1. HP Windows + V reset procedure: I tried the Windows + V key combination to reset the CMOS/BIOS settings. The reset procedure appeared to work, but the administrator password was still there.
  2. Booting Linux from a USB drive: I created a Linux bootable USB and tried selecting the UEFI USB boot option. However, selecting it caused the laptop to restart instead of booting Linux.
  3. Windows is still working: I can boot into Windows normally. I also have around 100 GB of unallocated space reserved for installing Linux.

What I need help with:

  • Is there a legitimate way to recover or remove the BIOS administrator password on this specific HP model?
  • Does the Windows + V procedure normally leave the administrator password intact?
  • Could the BIOS password be preventing the laptop from booting from my Linux USB, or is that likely a separate issue?
  • Is there an official HP recovery procedure or another safe method I should try?

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with this issue on an HP 15s-series laptop. Please suggest model-specific solutions if possible.

One more question — Is HP's ₹499 service worth it?

HP has quoted me ₹499 for assistance with this issue.

  • Is paying ₹499 worth it for removing the BIOS administrator password?
  • Will the password be removed permanently, or is ₹499 only a diagnostic/inspection fee?
  • Has anyone in India used this service for an HP 15s-series laptop? What was the final cost, and did the solution work permanently?
  • If HP cannot remove the password without replacing the motherboard, will they tell me before charging for any additional work?

I'd like to understand the actual outcome and total cost before paying.

I'd prefer to avoid risky methods that could brick the laptop or damage the firmware.

Thanks in advance!

Is there no hope?

From what little I've actually understood from the research I've done, is there nothing else that can be done to eliminate this? The computer was from a friend, no clue where they got it from and they didn't even know it worked. So nothing is needed or important within the laptop, I was hoping to use it as a way for my 2 boys to watch Netflix and Amazon or YouTube and simple streaming stuff, on their non-smart TV within their bedroom. (Basically just plug the HDMI & wireless mouse/keyboard in and use the TV as the monitor) So factory reset or anything similarly is an option. Really anything is an option I suppose, cuz from what I've read, it's basically useless unless I figure out the password someone else created, or open the system up and do something inside that is outside my skill set and ability..

So basically I'm just checking that I'm not missing something or someone doesn't have a magical trick that can salvage this?

It's older and the screen is busted up and I didn't pay anything for it. Just would have worked for what I needed it for, and would have saved me the time, effort, and little bit of money it would take for me to find some kind of substitute for my boys..

I'm open to anything since right now, it's just a paperweight for me...

Computer is: HP pavilion x360 m Convertible

Model 11m-ap0013dx

P.s. unfortunately I am basically computer/electronics illiterate and nincompoop.

Thank you in advance.

Here's to hoping there's someone with a miracle key to solve my problem..

Can’t reopen bios after changing it from csm to uefi

I’m trying to turn secure boot on but I have to change it from csm to uefi, then restart my pc for it to clock it but then I can’t get back into the bios after changing it to uefi. The only way I can is taking the motherboard battery out and back but then it resets the settings back to default and csm and the loop continues. I have tried getting into bios every way possible, using cmd prompts and doing it in the settings. I also know this isn’t a hardware issue as I used to have this on my pc when it was on windows 10. Pls pls pls help I’ve been at this for 3 days will be eternally grateful

Windows frequent shutoffs and DRIVER IRQL bluescreens

  • Acer Nitro AN515-58, about 3 years old: Intel Core i5-12450H, 16 GB DDR5 (dual channel, Samsung M425R1GB4BB0-CQK0L), Windows 11 Home, BIOS V2.21 (the newest listed by Acer)
  • New Timetec PCIe 3.0 512 GB NVMe SSD with a fresh Windows install the same day, around early September 2026
  • Fans cleaned around September; CPU and GPU thermal paste never replaced
  • Charger: Chicony A17-230P1A (Acer KP.2300H.004), 19.5 V, 11.8 A, 230 W. The cable is torn at the adapter end with the shield braid exposed

Sudden shutoffs with no blue screen, plus blue screens and freezes, starting around mid-September (Reliability Monitor shows failures from the week of Sept 13). About 10 unexpected shutdowns (Event 41) occurred between Oct 11 and Oct 13, roughly 3 a day, with more on Oct 14 and Oct 15, and about 40 since the fresh install. They happen while gaming, browsing, idle, in sleep, and during a Windows update install. They occur plugged in at home and at a second location (a library, different outlet), and on battery: a shutoff with the lid closed at roughly 60% charge (Oct 13) and a blue screen at idle a few minutes after a restart (Oct 15). Most shutoffs are an instant black screen with the fans stopping at the same moment.

  • Event 41 details (two examined): BugcheckCode 0, PowerButtonTimestamp 0, no hardware error count. This means a power loss or reset, not a crash and not a forced shutdown. One showed Modern Standby in progress and the other a sleep state.
  • Blue screens (Oct 4 to Oct 15): DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and one MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, all at ntoskrnl.exe+4fd130 with no third-party driver named and Parameter 2 at 0xFF. They include one when opening the Windows Update troubleshooter (Oct 13) and one on battery at idle minutes after a restart (Oct 15).
  • MemTest86 v11.7: pass 1 clean, then froze during pass 2 at about 49 minutes with 0 errors. The laptop briefly would not power on after the forced shutdown.
  • SSD: CrystalDiskInfo shows Good (99%), 0 integrity errors, 37 unsafe shutdowns. No disk or stornvme errors in the System log.
  • Heat (HWiNFO after about 1.5 hours of gaming): CPU package averaged 91 C and peaked at 97 C (limit 100 C), with the thermal throttling flag on about 98% of the time at only about 37 W average power. GPU temperatures not yet checked.
  • Wi-Fi adapter errors (Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650i, Netwtw12 events 5002 and 5005) at 7:51 PM on Oct 12, around when the laptop froze for about 10 seconds with loud buzzing audio.
  • Power cuts at idle and during updates: an instant cut while browsing plugged in (Oct 14), and a cut in the middle of a security update install (Oct 14, plugged in) that completed after restart loops.

Already tried

  • Both RAM sticks reseated (shutoffs continued afterward)
  • BIOS confirmed up to date; TPM reports ready; SSD health checked
  • BitLocker recovery screen appeared Oct 10 after a crash
  • Used at a second location on a different outlet: shutoffs still happen, and they also happen on battery, so the outlet and the charger alone are ruled out

I've been keeping a pretty extensive log on this. i want to take it to the same repairman i went to before, but his suggestion is to just reinstall windows and I'm not sure if that will actually fix anything and wanted some more opinions on the matter. any advice or help you can give me is appreciated. thank you so much.

Android Chromebook rejecting my wifi after a few minutes

I've recently had my wifi router upgraded (Xfinity) and am no longer able to use certain games (like online MMORPG games and also some of my online schooling) or apps without it eventually kicking me off and saying I'm no longer online. I've tried to forget my password and re enter, I reset and power washed my Chromebook and router.. I've factory reset the Chromebook as well. Went into the settings and also tried to change the DNS or whatever it was called and also didn't work. I feel like I've tried everything. Went on Xfinitys app and tried changing the advanced security.. nothing. My YouTube wouldn't even work there for a hot minute. I just recently bought this Chromebook no more than 6 months ago. Anyone think they can help me out? 🥹

Unresolved Gigabyte Gaming A16 - Wifi Won’t Work

So I recently bought a Gigabyte Gaming A16 Laptop - Intel/ Gtx 5050. First day it drove me crazy because the Gimate AI controls everything and keeps switching the graphic card from Intel to Nvidia. So after that i kept working and there was an issue with the Adobe After Effects playback. I searched everywhere for solutions, but nothing was found and even the AI couldn’t fix it. But after all that suddenly the wifi 🛜 icon started to keep disappearing, and in Device Manager, it always shows Error (CODE 10 / CODE 43). Updated the drivers, updated bios and done a full reset. Still the same problem.
Does anyone know how to fix this ?

Unresolved Looking for JBOD_Repair_Tools.exe for M.2 SATA 5-bay JBOD card (INIC6611)

Hi, I bought a "SATA to 4/5 port NGFF 3.5 inch JBOD" card (brand TISHRIC, AliExpress). The manual says a Support CD with JBOD_Repair_Tools.exe should be included, but mine came without it and the seller doesn't respond.

Without the tool, the card only shows a 596 GB placeholder disk (even with no SSDs inserted), and initializing it fails with an I/O error / "fatal hardware error". All 5 SSDs (M.2 SATA, B+M key) are tested and working.

Device details:

- Shows as: LT DISK JBOD_5 BAY, firmware SCEMJ2.1 (via smartctl)

- Board: ENCNF5S-H01 VER006 (ITHOO)

- Controller: Initio/Sage INIC6611

- System: Windows 11, card connected via SATA-to-USB 3.0 adapter with 12V power supply

Does anyone have this tool or a download link from their seller? Thanks!

Microsoft Account hacked through Discord and i need help

I made a stupid mistake and joined a private Discord server that someone sent me. The server looked legitimate, with over 12,000 members. When I tried to join a voice chat, someone told me I had to verify my account first. I clicked the verification link and received an email with a verification code, but I stupidly didn't check that it was actually a code to access my Microsoft account. I entered that code to verify my account, and they obviously took it.

Within two minutes, they had logged into my Microsoft account, changed my password, and replaced my recovery email address.

The thing is, I barely used that Microsoft account. It had no banking information or anything important saved on it, and my PC is linked to a different Microsoft account that I still own and can access. I also checked all my Gmail accounts, and there were no suspicious login attempts or signs that anyone had tried to access them. They probably don't even know the email addresses or passwords for those accounts.

So my question is can I just continue using my pc and phone like before cause I don't really care about that Microsoft account or I should take some security steps?
