Procatalepsis

Ever since my undergrad Argumentative Writing course it's been one of my favorite words. There are words that are lovely to hear, others fun to say, some pleasant to write, and even a few nice to look at. 'Procatalepsis' isn't my 10/10, but like the 1992 Summer Olympics US men's basketball Dream Team, it delivers on all fronts, charm and flair with a hint of gravitas and a splash of fun.

Recently, I was reading some rhetorical shtuff and their section on procatalepsis listed 'prebuttal' and 'prolepsis' as synonyms. Now, in the past I've thought of a 'prebuttal' as different enough from 'procatalepsis' so as to not use them interchangeably and 'prolepsis' was new to me, so I was excited to have to have new things to research, more runway down my research rabbit hole (this particular rabbit hole has a runway b/c it was built by highly advanced rabbits that have airplanes and universal healthcare). Even more exciting though was the new entry to my lexicon: prolepsis.

Now, I like to keep a melange of synonyms banked away in the ol' mental thesaurus; after all, a sundry store of synonyms supplies stock when making a sentence sandwich, story salad, even spice up a script salmagundi. Most importantly, it's the remedy to reduce rote repetition. That being said, in this instance, I think I'm going to stick with 'procatalepsis', and here's why. Butts. 'Prolepsis' looks like 'prolapses' which makes me think of a prolapsed butthole and I don't want to think about prolapsing buttholes. Then, if I say "prebuttal" I start thinking of a butt, a butthole, then I think there's another word for this I can use that won't make me think about butts, I use that word. Prolepsis. Prolapses. A prolapsed butthole. NOW I'M PICTURING PROLAPSING ANUSES (prolapsing ani?) AGAIN, fuck. So I'm just going to stick to calling it a procatalepsis, no but(t)s.

"Reign in..."

As in "restrict" or "limit"; it's an equestrian metaphor, people, and the correct word is *rein*, not "reign" (which is what a monarch does during his/her tenure). Seeing this multiple times a day recently.

How does this word sound?

In Korea, we have the word "hmmteresting" (흠터레스팅 in Korean), which is a combination of "hmm" and "interesting"; it is not exactly slang, but quite a lot of people, at least those around me, use it.

How does it sound to native/non-native English speakers?

Underrated word of the day: Desultory

If you’re desultory you don’t have a definite plan. You’re aimless and often jump from one thing to another. Constantly switching majors in college is a good example

Underrated word of the day: Prevaricate

Prevaricating refers to not telling the truth, not giving a direct answer, and being generally evasive. Should note prevaricating is different from just outright lying. Lying means a complete falsehood while prevaricating is using half truths rather than giving a false statement. For example, when your mother wants to see your report card, but you prevaricate and beat around the bush to avoid giving up the fact you got all F’s on your report card.

Words that make you laugh everything you hear it.

Words that trigger an instant inner giggle. All words accepted you may need to explain.

Just watching NCIS New Orleans. And Sebastián described something as shmutz.

Shmutz like a glob of something.

Something about hearing that word used seriously in a sentence just gets me.

Can't think of others atm.

What about you?

A really useful but impressive word in your vocabulary?

What’s a good word you’ve learnt that you find particularly useful. Something that’s not just an impressive word but something worth learning because it’s applicable in your day-to-day.

My example: (v) "obfuscate" - to make something unclear, confusing, or harder to understand, often intentionally. Like when a politician gets a simple yes or no question and talks for three minutes without answering it. Now I see it all the time.

What do you call the middle-finger gesture?

Flipping the bird seems to be the most common name, but where I grew up in Southeastern Massachusetts, we always called it "pegging a finger." I wonder if it's a regionalism, or maybe it's died out since I was a kid (early 1970s). Any insights?

Gap VS Slit VS Cavity

I know they generally mean the same thing but where do you guys generally use these terms? For me, I use gap when it’s a space between two objects. To give an example, “a bit of the chicken I was eating ended up in the gap between two of the number keys.”

I use slit when the space has a horizontal or vertical shape. For instance, I slid the paper in between the slip between the door and door frame.

I use cavity when I refer to a small hollow space inside a solid object. For instance, removing the painting reveals a small cavity in the wall.

Underrated Phrase of the Day: Bubble Wrap(figuratively speaking)

When you bubble wrap someone, you’re coddling them, shielding them from the harsh realities of life. Bubble wrapping is commonly wrapped around objects and other such parcels so that they aren’t damaged in transit, and this can be applied to human beings as well. A good example is preventing your child from seeing an R-rated movie as it may contain content you deem unsuitable for them.

Underrated word of the day: Intimation

Intimations are hints or suggestions of something without explicitly doing/saying the action thereof. To give an example, if you find a birthday cake in the fridge and the number of candles in the cake matches your age, that’s a pretty good intimation your family and friends are throwing a party for you.
